It was real. This shadowy being with thick limbs and red eyes. I shoved the back door open, but my legs gave out the second I put my weight on them. I turned on my arse, crawling backwards with my fingers digging into the earth.
My eyes had returned to normal when I checked the driver-side mirror while falling on the ground.
The creature held Hank high and ripped his heart out. My hand covered my mouth, trapping my cry of fear. A tear rolled down my cheeks in memory of Hank. He had worked for me for years. Now he was gone.
"I will kill you for doing that to him!" I screamed while seeing red. "He was my friend, you monster!"
The creature stomped its large foot on the ground, and the force lifted me off it and threw me down back again. Alarmed, I started crawling away faster, forgoing my borrowed confidence.
"No! Please stop—"
I struggled to get on my feet, but it swiped me up from the ground and into its giant palms like I was as tiny as an ant. In comparison, I was like an ant, and I was about to be crushed to death.
It was impossible to free myself from its death-grip. The creature brought me to its mouth, so close. It growled, blowing garlic-smelling breath on me like a mighty wind.
"Eww, what do you feed on?"
"Humans."
I blinked, not expecting an actual answer. I studied the creature crushing my bones, and instantly, I knew the reply hadn't come from it. This demon-like thing couldn't speak actual words to save its life.
"Especially Ember blood witches!" The voice came again, a lot louder this time.
I struggled and struggled, trying to look over my shoulder to see the source. There was someone here watching me embrace death. I wasn't screaming for help because I had thought there was nothing that could save me from this. A minute ago, there was no use trying, but now someone was right here. I saw the light.
"Help me!"
"Ey, aren't you quite arrogant? What's the magic word, Blue?"
Feeling my final breath leave me, I managed. "Please!"
The next thing I knew, I was falling. Suddenly, the creature released me from its crushing grip. I could breathe again, but I was still alarmed. I was falling to my death.
"Ahh!"
A split-second to death and the only thing on my mind was my favourite heels. My babies.
I screwed my eyes tight in fear.
But the second warm arms caught my fall, my screams trapped in my throat. I fell against someone's muscular body. At the instant, I knew it belonged to the voice. My saviour. I was now in his arms.
I pulled my face away from his chest, hoping to see his eyes, but I was on the ground just as soon. He dropped me right on my arse with no remorse.
"Ya!"
I yelled, wincing from the pain in my butt cheeks. There was still a creature looking for ways to end my life next to us, but for some reason, I felt safe knowing I wasn't alone, even though this man was a stranger. I shoved my pointer finger at my six-feet-four saviour, glowering at his broad back like flames.
He was tall, alright. Taller than even Noah-the-hottie, but that didn't give him the right to drop me like I'm garbage. I was livid.
"You! Do you know who I am? How dare you drop me?!"
"Shut up." He muttered, and the only reason the words stopped reeling out was shock.
My hands shook again as they covered my mouth to muffle the sounds of my heavy breathing. I didn't know whether to cry or run, but neither my legs nor voice were working. I watched his hands. He had real-life dark talons as fingernails. I glimpsed the fur around his neck, peeking out from the nape of his jacket. He wasn't human, too.
What the fuck is happening to my life?
The man brought out a sword still resting in its scabbard. He didn't draw it as he began fighting the creature. He was too fast, like lightning. I couldn't catch up with him.
When the creature growled in agony, I saw him holding the sheathed sword that had gone right into the shadowy being's chest. He drew it out, and the creature turned to dust.
I made a sound at the back of my throat, crawling backwards from my place on the floor. That was all I had done tonight. Crawl like a wimp.
"Get away from me!"
He turned to me, revealing the face of something not human; the face of a beast. Like a flash, his features changed. He was human again. A fine one. He ruffled a hand through his dark brown hair, blatantly ignoring my demands.
"I meant it! Not another step, or I'll sue you for physical and mental damages!"
My breaths came hard and fast. My knuckles were sore from all the crawling I had done. I wanted to curl up in my bed and sleep this nightmare through, but he wasn't disappearing. Instead, he put up a bold smirk.
"Sue me? Go ahead, Blue. Run to your lawyers, but that's not why I'm here."
"Why are you here? Are you interested in killing me like that creature wanted? After all, you are a monster, too."
He clasped his hands in front of him, giving me a full view of the sheathed sword that had ended the creatures life. I gulped as my eyes darted to it every second.
"I just hope Khal was not wrong about you." He stepped closer, and on instinct, I shielded my face with my arm in fear of the worst. He said again, "This sword. I need you to unsheathe it."
"Why?" I slowly lowered my arm, narrowing my eyes at him.
"It belongs to a lineage of witches. Only one who weilds Ember Blood magic can unsheathe this sword and own it. For centuries, we've waited, and it seems you, Blue Meyer, are the last surviving Ember Blood Witch."
"The what now..." I mumbled, feeling a throbbing ache in the left side of my head. "Witches? What do you mean by witches? None of that exists. You don't exist."
"Shadow demons are obsessed with the Ember Blood running through your veins. I have reason to believe you are one of them."
I struggled to my feet, dusting my palms on my short black dress. My Jimmy Choo heels were still next to the door of the Maybach. I couldn't go back for them because he was in the way.
"Look here, I'm not a witch! I'm Blue Meyer. The CEO of the most successful beauty Empire in America. You've got the wrong person!" I gritted my teeth and whirled around in the opposite direction, praying he wasn't coming after me.
I looked over my shoulder and found him still rooted to a spot. That was when I started to run. I ran so hard my feet hurt, but I could also hear the sound of car engines ahead. The route I took ended on a tree-lined street. I made it out alive.
I kept checking behind me and only got more anxious when I couldn't see signs of anyone following me. A cab eventually stopped. It was the first and only one in sight. The kind, elderly man dropped me off on my street free of charge because he was already off work.
I knew he pitied me because I looked homeless because of my dirty clothes, bare feet, and sore knuckles.
At home, I took a wine bottle off the shelf, uncorked it, and drank directly from the rim. I needed sleep. I needed to end this day.
It was just a nightmare. Hank is not dead, I told myself as I checked the CCTV in the security room and climbed up the stairs.
"Yes, Blue. Everything is just fine. Those things didn't happen. That creature doesn't exist. The man with claws doesn't exist. I'm safe." I repeated the words before pushing my bedroom door open.
I dropped the bottle on the dresser, raking a hand through my straight black hair and leaving it there. A laugh escaped, and I found myself laughing through tears for a beat.
I had lost my phone at the scene. I'm certain Ever must have left me a thousand messages. I would just call her in the morning. Right now, I had to shower.
Wiping my tears, I discarded the gown and walked into the shower stark naked. My eyes were shut tight as I washed the body wash off my face under the shower head.
I felt something tickle my ankles. At first, I brushed it off, but then my eyes popped open, and I found a waft of thick shadows seeping into the shower from the hole underneath the door.
"What the hell?" I mumbled, screaming when hands formed from the shadows and gripped my ankles. "Ahhhh!"
My body broke through the glass shower door, landing against the tile wall across after being flung. Pain dug deep at my core. I groaned, feeling lightheaded with a blurred vision.
I was lifted from the ground immediately. Strong and certain arms took me to my bed and laid me down on it. When I opened my eyes, it was him hovering about me.
"You."
"Stay Still," he said, placing a throw blanket over my naked body.
In the next second, he was gone, fighting off the shadow demon in the bathroom. I struggled to sit up. The ache in my back was as persistent as a drill. What if more come?
I reached inside the bedroom drawer and grabbed a gun with trembling hands. I would shoot the life out of any monster that tries to harm me again.
"What are you doing?"
My heart skipped a beat, and the gun almost tumbled out of my hold. I had been too busy staring at the door. I didn't notice he had won the battle.
"Protecting myself."
He walked to where I was on the other side of the bed. I wanted to keep the gun away, but he grabbed my wrist, stopping me.
"Don't. You'll need to protect yourself from me as well."
"But you saved my life."
He looked into my eyes for a beat, not responding to my obvious truth. Then he said in a dangerously low voice, "Draw the sword, Blue."
"What if I can't draw it? I told you I'm not a witch."
"I'll erase your memory of everything that happened tonight."
"How?" I asked in a mocking tone. "Oh, you have magical powers now?"
He tightened his hold on my wrist until it hurt. His eyes darkened like night. "No, I don't, Blue. I will end your life. That way, it will be permanent."
I looked at the sword. There was nothing to lose except my life, which I would have lost countless times today. He saved me and was now promising to kill me himself. I couldn't escape this, so I shut my eyes and drew it.
I held the sword's handle and pulled.
It wouldn't budge.
The sword was stuck inside the scabbard, and I had just bargained with the devil over my life.
My widened eyes watch the sheathed sword still in his hold. This could only mean one thing. He was mistaken about me, and now he had to make sure he kept the happenings of tonight a secret."Why then are they after you?" He muttered to himself. "There has to be a reason the shadow demons are targeting you!" He paced for minutes, and I suspected he was moments away from ticking.I stood from the bed and grabbed the wine bottle from the dresser. After taking a long sip, I passed it to him. He raised a brow at my gesture. "One last drink before I die by your hands? It's clear I'm not the Ember-whatever-you-called-it witch." "I can see that, but Khal is never wrong. There's something I'm missing, and listening to you yap is not helping."I still held out the hand holding the bottle. "You said they eat humans, too. Maybe I pissed off the gods and the universe. I tend to drag a lot of attention because of my social status."He refused the bottle after three more attempts from me. I return
I froze on the stage, fiddling with my fingernails. Now, the world would find out the truth that something was wrong with me. Cage would also be discovered, and only I would pay for it. The gasps rose. I feared them. My feet fell back a step, and just when I was about to crumble, broad shoulders stepped in the gap and pulled me in. It was him. Cage. My face was currently buried in his chest, but if I didn't hate him so much for making me give up my life's legacy, I would have snuggled closer to inhale all of him. The enemy smelled good. Too good. "What are you doing here?" I croaked. "A bodyguard must protect his owner at all costs." His hand patted down my hair. The other one slipped around my waist, pulling me close. If we weren't faking this to save ourselves, I would have been convinced. The reporters would forget the past minute and the sudden colour of my eyes. They had seen a bigger dirt to gossip about. Blue Meyer and a man who's not Noah. It was the news of the decad
I looked at him like he had grown three heads. He was definitely crazy. It was one thing to trust and escape with the same man who wanted to kill me a few hours ago, but he saved my life and I acknowledge that. This was just not it. "You've got to be kidding me." I shook my head, turning away and raking a hand through my hair. "Alpha Khal of Kandare sent me. He's the only one that can save your life but you must get married to him." He insisted, grabbing my arms and pulling me to face him. "I'm marrying no one!" "It's a good thing I don't answer to you, Blue." "I won't leave with you, Cage. If those are your conditions, then I won't!" I jutted my chin, hoping he won't see right through my act because on the inside, I was only just a scared woman who didn't want to die. "So, you would rather die in the hands of those shadow demons?" He stood so close, dropping his voice by an octave. "I thought I was the only one allowed to kill you." I breathed in his scent, shutting my eyes
I frowned at my surroundings when I couldn't see him anywhere. My heart had started beating too fast because I knew I couldn't afford to be left alone for even second. The car had been parked at a cliff. He had abandoned me in the middle of nowhere, so that those demons can feast on me. I could feel my breaths coming out shorter. What if the demons were right outside the door, waiting for me to take the first step outside and then they'd attack? I was shit scared. I had never been this scared or alone in my life and I had been lonely all my life, but that was an understatement compared to this. With shaky hands, I pushed the door open and stepped out. It was a windy night. The wind blew locks of my hair over my forehead and eyes. I kept pulling them away, only realizing he had covered me with a throw blanket while I was asleep. I limped over to the edge when I didn't see any signs of danger. A part of me told me they would come. If I could just jump over now and save myself the pai
Cage was on his feet at the instant because they had attacked us without delay. I was still on the seat as Cage blocked them off. He was getting outnumbered, and we would slowly start to lose. I broke the bottle on the table against the wall and stood at his side. I had no idea what I was doing, but when our backs touched, I knew I had to protect him. I stood with the broken glass held out in defence. Cage and I bid time. The others snarled at us, too. Their eyes were completely as black as night. "You should have just stayed put, Blue." "I came to help." "You are not actually helping." We were bantering, forgetting the main point of why we were even here and the dangers around us. It was always easy to lose focus while around him. I just realised this fact. "We can't stay here. Let's clear out a carriage and lock ourselves in until the ride is over. They shouldn't be able to get past these steel doors." His eyes flickered to me for a jiffy, and I almost smiled at the fact th
A corner of his mouth curved up as he watched me, and my very brave, or depending on the outcome, stupid, attempt at seducing him. I wondered if he'd let me seduce him. The low words rumbling from his chest. “You're not mine, not in this life. I shouldn't want you so much. And yet I can't seem to help myself.” I didn't care if he was saying yet another one of his weird ass witch bullshit. I wanted him, and I wanted him now. I tried to take the lead again, rubbing against him, but he did something that shocked me into stillness. He slid his large hand to the back of my neck, lowered his head to smell me, running his nose from my collarbone along my neck, and stopping just behind my ear. My toes curled, and I forgot all about the pain in my foot where I'd hurt my ankle and torn open the toe of my skin. The intimacy of such a personal action sent a powerful shudder through me, stimulating the tingle in my stomach and between her legs. A moan escaped from the back of my throat
She looked terrifying. She looked like she'd come out of a movie set with the way she was dressed. And with that gleaming sword at her side.My eyes widened as Cage bent and dropped me on my feet, leaving me standing before the tomb raider lady, where she could cut me in two."You sure know how to make an entrance, Zen."Zen?!The woman chuckled dryly and drew the sword back.I shrunk back, going to stand behind Cage. The traitor gave me an amused look before walking up to meet the woman.I watched them as Cage bent to the floor and picked up a black gym bag.He came to me and dropped the bag on the bed beside me, then gave me a pointed look."There are clothes in there. They're for you. Shower and dress. And be fast about it."Why was he suddenly being so curt with me? Was it because of the woman? My eyes slid to the dark-haired beauty again. She looked really hot in the leather jacket and denim pants she was wearing. And then the sword. Had people always carried things around like t
CageI felt like a deer in headlights, rooted to the spot.It wasn't Raven. It wasn't Raven, I told myself repeatedly.I searched her face, my eyes hooded as I took in the sword Blue held in her hands. Her grip was loose and awkward on the hilt of the sword, and I knew instinctively that she could not fathom the real enormity of what she'd just done. She'd unsheathed the sword. She swiveled around, looking for any more shadow demons. But they had all fled. The power in Raven's sword was unfathomable. It was a spelled sword.Only Raven could fight with it, drawing out her energy and linking her soul to the sword. And she had drawn it out it."They all ran away. They've never done that before."I blinked. "Yes." I stared deep into her blue eyes, the one thing that made her different from Raven. My Raven had had amber eyes, the color of sunset. I'd often seen a reflection of me deep in those eyes as we laughed together, fought together, and made love.I rushed to her side and picked up t
Blue"You're free to go."I stood outside the police station, and considered my next move. I climbed down the stairs of the precinct and saw Ever's car out front.I rushed to hide behind a pillar, backing into the corner because I didn't think I could handle a run in with Ever. She hated my guts apparently.I peered around the pillar and saw Ever's beautiful beast of a car zoom off. I relaxed s little more. That meant Ever was gone. And I could now leave the precinct without her even seeing me. She still believed me to be involved in this somehow.I came out of the pillar when the car drove off, letting out a sigh of relief. Now I don't have to say anything to Ever.I turned to start walking, when I saw her. Ever, she watched me with eyes that were like daggers. My heart started racing again. Ever still thought I had something to do with Blue going missing. I could almost feel her staring at me as though trying to see into my soul through my skin. She looked so pissed at me. The last
Blue"No, no, it's not what you think." I rattled out, as my hands gripped the edge of the table in a grip that made my knuckles white.Ever continued to speak into her phone, telling them to be fast.My mouth dropped open in astonishment, wondering what the fuck I'd said, to make her call her bulldogs on me. "Ever, I'm not threatening you, or anything like that." I told her with an urgency, holding my hands palm out in an open show of honesty. "I swear, it's really me. I'm Blue. I told you it's a difficult to explain situation."Her stony look could have shot me right in between my eyes for all the hate and mistrust in them. "What have you done with Blue? You wicked bitch! I've been looking for her for the last two weeks! What the fuck have you done? Where is she?"Fuck! Fuck!To them, I was missing, hadn't been seen or heard from for more than a week. And Hank! My eyes flew to hers. They must think something happened to both of us.They thought I was missing, and that I, Monica, had
BlueI dozed on the chair, my body trying to catch up on the hours of lost sleep from yesterday night on the hard bed.I sat in a chair facing the reception area in the center of the lobby. There was a row of long benches facing the reception area and I had picked one, several other people had since joined me on the bench.I yawned again, staring at the clock behind the receptionists as I wondered why Ever wasn't out yet. It was already four in the evening and I had to be back at the shelter by six at least.No. No matter what, I wouldn't go back to that place.I had to convince Ever. All of this was mine anyway, so why was I suffering? In a different body, or in my body, it was still all the same. I was Blue Meyer. The elevator doors opened with a ping and Ever walked out, her long legs moving away from me so fast. She looked gorgeous in a knee length halter dress that had no place in the workplace. Her hair hung down in curly braids and she was absorbed in her phone.I snapped to an
BlueI swiped at my face to make sure I was seeing right. He was standing in front of the door, just inside the doorway while I faced him, trying to get out."You." I breathed, my brain trying to figure out what the hell was going on.I'd seen this jacket before, I realized. He was wearing a brown jacket, with frayed arms. He'd been the one in front of me on the line last night. I gasped. "How long have you been following me?"He looked at me, and I finally saw his face in the bright light of day.Brown hair was dark now. Perhaps the glow of the lantern in that din of a dungeon had made me think it brown, when it was black. His eyes were brown though, and the thick eyebrows rose up and down as his lips tipped in frown. He sidestepped me, walking past me to one of the bathrooms. He entered a stall and slammed the door in my face, all the while staring stonily at everything else but me, and saying nothing. The door banged against the frame and slid open a fraction, but he made no furthe
Blue"Hey redhead! You're cutting!"It took a beat before I remembered I was a redhead now.I turned to glare at the voice, not sure what to say to the woman when I eventually saw the two kids she held in front of her.She dropped their hands and came to me, moving into my personal space. She smelled of sweat and a bone deep tiredness."Some of us got here before you, and you think you can just cut and get in like that? Think you're smart?"she barked, her words landing directly in my face.I stretched out a hand and pushed her back as she stumbled back two paces. "You're spitting in my face." I mumbled, wiping my face with the back of my hand.I didn't want her to get louder than she already was.She turned to the rest of the people on the line, waving her hands frantically at me. "She cut in. I saw her before, I was definitely before her on the line, how come she's now in front of me?"I refused to speak to her. This was ridiculous enough as it is. I'd simply come here because I didn
BlueFuck. As if the mess I was in wasn't enough, I was back in New York and..A horn blared in my ears, and I turned so fast, my ankle twinged with the pain. The car whistled to a stop, just inches before my quivering knees. The driver behind the wheel glaring at me.He jumped out of his car, his face red with anger and approached me with the thinly veiled dislike New Yorkers always had on their face.I came to, and stared around, the hazy blanket draped over my awareness dropping away.I was standing in the middle of the road. And the man had almost hit me."Are you crazy? You want to die?!" He yelled, his hands balled into fists.I walked away from him, afraid and in shock. How had I returned here so fast? I'd blinked and all of a sudden, was out of Kandare. My eyes struggled to get used to the busy road brimming with people. This was the evening rush hour.People walked past me in streams, knocking into me and hurrying past without stopping to apologise.Everyone was always in a h
BlueHer grin was wide, like she had just won the lottery. My hands sweated a little bit in apprehension. "It is done."What was done?My puzzled look at her had her shaking her head and muttering under her breath. "They can't find you now. Not until you find the Golden Mandrake.""But how? You haven't done anything." I wondered if she was a dupe, like the manyscammers and swindlers in the human world."How dare you doubt me?" She glared at me and I glared right back.Any time now, Alpha Khals wolves would be on me, and she wasn't doing anything.I glanced back at the far trunks through which they'd come any second now. I could hear the heavy thud of their feet, a lot of them by the sound of it.In a panic, I shot Modesta a pleading look. "Please do something!" I whisper yelled, ready to fall to my knees and beg.My eyes widened in fear as instead of helping me she simply sank under the surface of the water, her red hair floating in the water, until she disappeared fully.I stood, ro
BlueMy heartbeat drummed in my ears as I ran, pushing myself to fly over the roots and bushes on the rough terrain.I could hear their footsteps thundering after me and I could see some creeping up on my sides. They were fast.Breathing hard and nearing exhaustion, I'd been running for hours now, I stopped before the bank of a river. It stretched out all the way around me, with no other visible route over it, in sight. There was no way around it, I had to get in.My hands clutched my chest as I tried to slow down the extremely hard pounding of my heart.Maybe I would pass away from the way my heart was beating so fast, and be spared of all this trouble.Shaking off the deadly thought, I waded into the water.I was careful to step in the shallow parts, knowing fully well that if a strong wave pulled me under I might not be able to swim against the torrent. I had only ever taken dips in swimming pools, and even at the beach I had never ventured far.My legs were freezing in the water a
BlueI couldn't sleep.Despite the fact that I clearly remembered him saying he would only bring me whatever I needed after I fell asleep.I was anxious and my heart kept beating fast, like I was already planning to escape that very night.Like everything that had happened since my arrival in Kandare, this felt surreal.I shifted on my side, my palm pressed down on the cold ground. A sound had me sitting up in the dark and crawling slowly to press my face between the bars.Someone had turned off the lantern that had burned consistently for the last few days. Everywhere was pitch black, as even the holes I took for windows had been locked some days ago.I sniffed the air as something strange filtered into my cell, and my head fell back.It was a pungently sweet smell. It made me drowsy, and I felt the pull of sleep against my eyelids.Startled, I shook my head side to side, trying to stay awake. I'd been too anxious to sleep just seconds ago, so why was I feeling so sleepy now?A shado
