Aryan-

“Aryan, get up or you are going to be late!” My Godmother yelled from the other side of my bedroom door.

“I am almost done!” I rolled my eyes in amusement.

I loved my Godparents, but they were the most disorganized people I knew. When I started living with them after my family died, I had been the one to get them up every morning. Transferring to Grandview Academy wasn’t bad, but as long as I stayed in the background, I could get through my senior year with ease.

The only reason I attended such a prestigious school was because my Godparents were on the faculty. I was on a scholarship, which was bad enough, not to add the fact that I was the daughter of one of the most feared Alphas in history, who couldn’t shift. Being around kids that came from large packs and their parents were amongst the top ranks, would make me a target of their bullying.

Last year, shortly after I transferred during my junior year, I witnessed a kid being made fun of. That kid had run out of school crying, and I heard he transferred. If it weren’t for that kid also being a scholarship kid and unable to shift, I would have revealed that I was the same.

Since I had just transferred there after my parents and younger brother died, I decided that I didn’t need the hassle. Granted it wasn’t like the entire school didn’t already know, but if I kept my head down, I could blend in without standing out. Today was the first day of my senior year, so I was almost done.

As soon as I got enough credits and could leave, I planned to try to rebuild my pack. That is if I managed to shift before then. One thing no one knew, except a select few, was that I was the future Alpha of the Blackwood pack.

After my pack had been slaughtered, I had been the only one to survive, but not without witnessing the carnage. Since it also happened on my seventeenth birthday, the day I was supposed to have my first shift, my wolf became suppressed. I kept thinking that I would shift on the following full moon, but nothing happened.

Now seven months later, I gave up the hope of shifting. If everyone knew I was a wolfless she-wolf and future Alpha, I would bring shame to the Blackwood Pack. My only hope is that by some miracle I will be able to shift by the time I graduate.

Standing in front of the full-length mirror in my bedroom, I stared at my reflection. Wearing a pleated black and red skirt, which was shorter than I would like, I pulled up my black stockings to cover as much of my thigh as I could. I also wore a white dress shirt, which was tucked into my skirt, with a formal jacket that matched my skirt.

The uniform wasn’t bad, but I missed being able to wear whatever I wanted. My parents had let me attend a public human school, so for the first two and a half years of high school, I was able to express myself. Now I guess it helped me to blend into the crowd since we all wore the same uniform.

I wasn’t the most beautiful girl at school, but I was in the top five. Well, when I wore makeup, I was. Since I needed to keep my head down, I didn’t bother putting make-up on anymore. It was weird going from a popular girl to a nobody by transferring schools.

I used to take pride in my appearance, but now I just wanted to get through the day so I could hurry home. After throwing my hair into a loose bun, I grabbed my Chapstick off my dresser. The worst thing about living in Florida was that the heat made my lips feel dry all the time.

Grabbing my bag, I left the room to hurry downstairs. My Godparents were sitting around the table eating breakfast, with a plate for me already filled. Anymore, I hated breakfast the most because it had been my favorite memory of my family.

No matter how busy my mom and dad were, they always made it a priority to eat breakfast with us kids, every morning. Now that they weren’t here, I only had a pain in my heart when I saw a breakfast table. I thought about trying to sit down with my Godparents for a change, but as I stepped closer, an image of the last breakfast I shared with my family filled my head.

“I, uh, maybe next time.” I repeated the same thing that I have every morning since I moved in with them.

They understood that I was still struggling with losing my parents and younger brother, but every morning they prepared breakfast anyway. This was the only part of the day that was difficult for me. For the most part, I have come to terms with their deaths.

“Okay, Sweetie. At least grab an apple before you leave.” My Godmother, Maize, said as I turned to leave.

Doing as she suggested, I went to the counter and grabbed an apple out of the fruit bowl. Making my way to the front door, I paused long enough to put my black dress shoes on, which was required of all students. Making my way out the door, I waved behind me as they yelled out for me to be careful on the road.

As far as parents go, they were doing a wonderful job, but I couldn’t bring myself to call them mom or dad. Heading off the porch, I looked back at the two-story family home that I have called home for six months. It wasn’t as large or as grand as the home I grew up in, but at least it had the warmth of family.

I tried to live where I grew up for the first month after everyone died, but when Maize and Dexter arrived, they told me that I needed to come with them. If it hadn’t been for the nightmares, I would have stayed. At sixteen, I could have legally lived on my own, but mentally I wasn’t prepared.

Turning from the grey house, with blue shutters, I walked down the long sidewalk to where my car was parked on the side of the street. This was the last thing my parents had bought me after I got my driver's license. It was a cherry red Dodge Challenger convertible.

I grew up with money, so at least I had something I could use to blend in with, especially in the parking lot at school. Unlike the other kids at school, I hadn’t been spoiled. Once I graduate, I will get a large inheritance, but I will need to use it to rebuild my pack.

My only goal currently was to rebuild the pack that my family has had for generations. This is part of the reason I had agreed to attend Grandview Academy rather than stay at Milborne High. At least at Grandview, I will be able to learn what I need to in order to rebuild.

Tossing my bag into the passenger seat, I walked around the car to get in on the driver’s side. We lived in a relatively safe neighborhood, so I generally kept the hood down. It was kept in the garage, but every morning, Dexter, my Godfather, would park it on the street so it would already be warmed up for me to leave.

Dexter was one of the best Doctors in the werewolf community, but after years of service, he decided to teach instead of practice. He and Maize had been best friends with my parents, which was why I was their Goddaughter. They have gone above and beyond for me for as long as I can remember.

Every morning Dexter would get my car out of the garage and check it over to make sure it was in the best condition. They weren’t exactly rich, but they were well off because they had saved for years and didn’t spend frivolously. They couldn’t buy a mansion or a hundred luxurious cars like most kids at my school could, but they lived well within their means and enjoyed life.

I just wished I could give them more. Even though I loved them dearly, they would never be able to replace my parents. I knew that they were sad about it because they occasionally tried to get me to call them Mom and Dad.

Glancing at the clock on my dash, I put the car in gear and pulled away from the curb. The cool morning air felt great as it caressed my face and ruffled my hair. Making the twenty-minute drive to school, I wondered how I could get into the school without being noticed.

There were already kids running around the parking lot, greeting old friends and new friends. Slowing down to five miles an hour through the parking lot, I put the hood of my car up. At least it would grant me a little privacy, so no one noticed me.

I was about to pull into the parking spot I used last year, but before I could, another cut me off to take it. I would have let it go, but the sound of metal grinding had me slam on my brakes. Not thinking about anything except my car, I threw open the door and ran to the front.

The driver’s side corner was bent in, right by the headlight and the car that had cut me off had a large scratch running along the side. So much for me keeping under the radar because I quickly moved to the driver’s side door of who cut me off. As soon as the door opened, I started yelling.

“Are you insane? You could have hit someone! Oh wait, you did hit someone!”

My mouth snapped closed when the owner of the car exited the vehicle. Brianna Holloway, queen B of the school, student class president, head cheerleader, and all-around mean girl, stood in front of me with a sneer on her face. Of course, I had to make enemies with her on my first day of senior year.

“It looks like you hit me. I was here first.” She said in a mocking tone as she folded her arms over her ample-sized breast.

Pulling my gaze away from her, I looked back at my car. It wasn’t that bad. It wouldn’t take much to fix it. Stepping back, I tried to avoid further conflict with Brianna. I didn’t get far before she grabbed my arm and yanked me to a stop.

“You need to pay for the damages you caused.” She let out a huff as she moved around to the other side of the car, pulling me with her.

Although I wanted to keep out of the limelight, I wasn’t about to let her walk all over me. My dad would roll in his grave if I didn’t stand up to a bully. Pulling my arm from her grasp, I pointed to my car, at the driver’s camera I had on my windshield.

“Why don’t we take this to Headmaster Belmont, and let him sort it out?” My eyes returned to her, narrowing into slits.

“Whatever.” She dug into her purse and threw a wad of cash at me before storming back to her car. “Don’t think this is the end.”

She got into her car and backed away, to park in a different spot, at the end of the parking lot. The way she parked, I knew she was attempting to conceal the damage to her car. Brianna was the most superficial person I have ever met.

I thought about ignoring the cash, but until I got my inheritance, I was relying on my Godparents to take care of me. Bending over, I grabbed the wad of cash and then got back in my car to park. Before exiting the car again, I called my best friend from my old school to see if he could help me.

“What’s up, Aryan?” Dirk Sikes answered on the second ring.

Their school wasn’t in session for another week, and I didn’t want Dexter or Maize to find out about the fender bender. They wouldn’t be mad at me, but they would worry. The last thing I wanted was for them to worry about me.

“Is there any way you can come get my car and get it repaired? I had a little accident. I will leave the money in the glovebox, along with the spare key.”

“Consider it done. Give me about ten minutes, I am out with some friends for breakfast, but I can take it to my dad to have him fix it.”

After telling him he was a lifesaver, I hung up the phone and waited until he arrived. I didn’t have a lot of time to waste, but I wanted to make sure he found my car. Once he left with the car, I hurried inside the school to get to my locker.

In my rush, I bumped into someone and fell to the ground. Could this day get any worse? Hoping that it wasn’t Brianna again, I looked up to find Kierian Laken standing over me with his hand held out.

“Sorry, I wasn’t looking where I was going.” His tone was silvery as he helped me to my feet.

He was the only guy I have met who held as much power as he did but could speak in a clear, light, and pleasant voice. Of all the guys I could have bumped into, why did it have to be him? He was not only the star athlete and most popular guy in school, but he was also one out of three Lycans who attended this school.

Kierian was none other than the Lycan Prince and someone I had harbored a crush on since we were kids, except he didn’t remember me. Right now, it was a good thing, because I didn’t want him to look at me with pity. When he learned about what happened to my family. Those intense ice-blue eyes were the last ones that I wanted to look at me with pity in them.

Aryan-“It was my fault. I should be the one to apologize.” I lowered my gaze to the floor.Since arriving at this school, he has been the main one I have tried to avoid. I hoped that he wouldn’t recognize me. I also didn’t want him to notice that I had a crush on him. As the most popular senior in school, I would certainly turn into a laughingstock when others realized I liked him.We had been best friends in elementary school, but then we went our separate ways in middle school. The Alpha King had sent him abroad to study and I left my private school and moved to Florida, where I started public school. Saying goodbye to him had been the most devastating event in my youth, aside from losing my family.“No matter whose fault it is, just be careful in the future. I need to get to class, but I will see you later, Aryan.” Kierian patted my shoulder lightly before walking past me.Lifting my head, I turned to look at his back as he walked away. That was the first time we have talked since

Aryan-“Whoa kiddo, what is the rush?” Mr. Slater asked after I entered the gym and quickly locked the door behind me.“I ran into Kierian in the hall.” I admitted since he already knew more than anyone else about my situation, including that I have had a crush on Kierian since we were kids.“Although I have no problem keeping your secret, I really don’t understand why you insist on hiding from that boy. He is a good kid, and I am sure he would understand if you explained things to him.”I knew what he said was true, but that only made it that more difficult. My life was never going to be easy, and Kierian was the last one I wanted to drag into it. His future was to be the next Alpha King, not face a future of uncertainty with me.Even if I did manage to reclaim my family legacy, it was going to be a long and difficult road. I might not know the Kierian who was now eighteen, but I knew the child he had once been. I never wanted to have the memory of him tarnished.“I can’t bring him i

Aryan-“You are a lifesaver!” I rushed forward, once I met Dirk by my car, to throw my arms around him, in a tight hug.“It isn’t that serious. The damage wasn’t that bad. It was done an hour ago. I just figured I would use the car as an excuse to have lunch with you.” Dirk chuckled.Stepping back, I didn’t bother correcting him. He knew pretty much everything about me, but he didn’t know about Kierian. Although humans weren’t supposed to know about werewolves, sometimes it was inevitable. He happened to show up at my house freshman year and discovered it by accident. It wasn’t just him, it was our mutual friend Lilly Montrose, who also knew about it. At first, they had been stunned, but they never looked at me any differently than before. If anything, it only made us grow closer.“Well, I still can’t repay you enough.” I playfully smacked his arm.“As long as you have lunch with me, that is agreement enough.” Dirk turned slightly and grabbed a brown paper bag off the top of my car.“

Aryan-Over the next few days, I kept my head low and was extra careful to avoid everyone. Not that I was able to get away from Brianna. She played dirty tricks on me, like putting fish in my locker, placing thumbtacks on my seat, sticking gum all over my desk, and a few other things. They were mostly childish things, but they were annoying. If that were the best she could do, I didn’t see a reason to make a big deal out of it. I just paid closer attention to things and stopped putting things in my locker. Anything important that I couldn’t carry around, I put in my locker in the gym.Thankfully, Kierian stopped attempting to talk to me, and even Liam left me alone. Neither of them attempted to convince me to eat lunch with them. For the most part, they ignored me. Except I did see Liam cleaning gum off my desk once. There was a time when Kierian had been standing next to my locker while the janitor cleaned the fish out of my locker on the third day.I wished they would just ignore me

Aryan-To my relief, Kierian returned to his seat, leaving me alone. I wasn’t sure how to feel about him kissing me, but I didn’t have much time to worry about that. The game continued, but I excused myself. Walking away, I found myself getting more alcohol, without paying much attention.I refilled my cup a few times before the effects of the booze hit me enough to relax again. When I returned to the party, the game had gotten out of hand and instead of going in a circle, it was completely random. A few people began to leave the party, as they were being carted away by their friends that hadn’t been drinking.Dirk was completely drunk, but Lilly stopped drinking when she noticed that Dirk wouldn’t be able to drive home. Since they came together, I didn’t need to worry about how either of them was going to get home. I also didn’t bother to care how I was going to get home, because I could always call my godparents. It wasn’t like they didn’t know that I had a few drinks with my friend

Aryan-Why do I bother drinking? Every time I do, I either drink too much and forget everything, or I don’t drink enough and end up doing something foolish and remembering everything. I didn’t know if it was a good thing or a bad thing that I don’t remember what happened Friday night. The last thing I remember was Kierian and the others showing up to the party, but after that everything was foggy. I vaguely remember Kierian kissing me, but I hoped it was just a dream. If he really did kiss me, I would never be able to live down the embarrassment I felt.If it weren’t for Lilly telling me that Kierian took me home, I wouldn’t have known how I arrived. So, when I woke up Monday morning, I wanted to pretend to be sick, so I could avoid the ridicule I was sure to face. The best thing for me to do was just act like I didn’t remember anything and go about my day as if nothing happened. Not that it would be hard since I really didn’t remember anything. Giving myself a pep talk, I made my way

Aryan-As soon as school was over, instead of heading home, I went to sit on the bleachers, by the football field. I still couldn’t believe I had agreed to the bet. More than that, I can’t believe I had initiated the bet.Groaning, I grabbed my bag and pulled out the homework I had for the day. Maybe I could just focus on my homework and worry about the rest later. As soon as I opened my book and started on my work, I heard someone jogging up the bleachers.I didn’t need to look up to know it was Kierian making his way toward me. Werewolf or not, Kierian’s presence demanded attention. Lycans had a very distinctive scent to them, that could attract anyone, including humans. They each had a different scent, but Kierian’s scent was the strongest. At least I noticed whenever he was nearby. I didn’t know if it was like that for everyone, or if it was just because I was more familiar with his scent. He had a deep woodsy smell, mixed with a hint of vanilla, along with the scent of night. It

Aryan-Standing in the gym, as I waited, I felt a little uncomfortable. Cheerleaders were still lingering after practice, either talking or coming out to the girl’s locker room. With my hands folded behind my back, I kept to the background, hoping no one would notice me.Kierian hadn’t been inside the locker room for long, so I knew it would take a while before he finished. Quietly walking along the wall, I slipped behind the stack of mats used for training. The stack was high enough that I didn’t need to crouch down.Peeking around the mats, I didn’t see anyone looking in my direction. As long as no one looked in my direction after leaving the locker room, I should be able to remain hidden. Every so often a cheerleader would exit, causing me to hold my breath until they walked off. When I was sure all the cheerleaders had finished showering and changing, my shoulders relaxed. There were a few girls that still lingered in the gym, but after ten minutes I thought I was in the clear. Tu

Aryan-Filled with raw and intense power, I could suddenly move again. Without hesitation, I kicked open the locker door. It felt like I was being swarmed with a tornado of wind. My hair blew wildly around me as I rushed toward Charlie.Instead of going straight for him, I moved past him slightly. Charlie’s eyes widened as I grabbed his wrist and twisted. I heard his bone snap as Kierian fell from his grasp. Without pausing, I wrapped my arms around Kierian and moved him to the far end of the hall.It wasn’t until I placed Kierian on the ground that I realized I had shifted into my Lycan form without realizing it. Just like the day at the hospital when I saved everyone, I touched my hand to Kierian’s chest to transfer my energy to him. He gasped as his eyes widened, and he jolted upright.Hearing something crackle behind me, I twisted around to see Charlie transforming into a beast I had never seen before. It was like he was part werewolf and something else entirely. His eyes were red

Aryan-“Are you okay?” Kierian was instantly at my side when I reached the basement.I struggled to remain upright, but I could feel my injuries already starting to heal. “I am fine. We need to figure out a different way to take him out. If you hadn’t seen, I couldn’t match his speed. His movements were too fast for me to get a single hit in.”“It might help if you shift into Lycan form.” Kierian suggested.“I tried, but he was relentless in his attacks.” I sagged onto a chair that Slater pushed toward me.“You haven’t been a Lycan for long, so it is understandable if you can’t shift in an instant whenever you want. We worked on things but never practiced shifting when under attack.” Slater stepped beside Kierian as he spoke.“I could shift down here and go up, but there isn’t a large enough passage. Maybe if I come out of hiding but stay distant from him, I could shift before attacking?” I looked between Kierian and Slater.“It could work, but…” Slater began.“You can’t risk exposing

Aryan- I tried not to think about Maize and Dexter for the rest of the weekend. I quickly realized my mistake the next day when we heard they had taken my warning and packed quickly. They left the house, and there were no signs of them anywhere. I know I shouldn’t have warned them. Slater made me realize I was likely in shock and had not thought things through. The Alpha King assured me they wouldn’t get away, but that didn’t make me feel better. I just hoped I didn’t make any mistakes when meeting Charlie today. The weekend had gone by in a blur, but I now had to focus. Standing outside, where Charlie was supposed to meet his son, I was extremely nervous. Kierian didn’t like the idea of me going alone, but I felt it was the only way to get Charlie to fall into our trap. He still didn’t like it, but I agreed to let him be close by just in case. Staying out of sight, I kept glancing at my phone to check the time. A few minutes before the agreed-upon time, I saw Charlie had arrived.

Aryan-Looking at the open folder, tears formed in my eyes as I saw a letter addressed to me from my father. Blinking away the tears, I picked up the first paper with shaky hands. It took a while for my eyes to focus, but I began to read aloud when they did.“My lovely daughter Aryan, I know this might come as a surprise to you, seeing as I failed to keep everyone safe. I know you thought highly of me and believed I could take on the world, but I am not a superhero. Since you are reading this, it means I failed to stop the evil that has been brewing for years. My most trusted Beta, Charlie, has betrayed me. I thought I could give him the benefit of the doubt when I started noticing things, but as it turned out, I was wrong. I didn’t realize how bad he was until it was too late. Your mother was also aware of this, but now that you are reading this, I know she didn’t survive. I hope that you can take care of your brother for us.”I stopped reading for a moment as I let out a strangled s

Aryan-While we waited for the witches to arrive, I worked on getting everyone set up. The girl, who hadn’t been subjected to being in wolf form, was known as Maddie. She was surprisingly very mature for her age. She helped find things for everyone since she was the one who knew her Pack the most.By the time we found a place for everyone, I was surprised to find out that the majority of her Pack were teachers, doctors, business owners, and so forth. Now, all we had to do was turn them back into humans. It was a good start. With people who could help rebuild the Pack, it made my life a little less complicated. The witches were due to arrive the following morning. We still had a few days before we needed to worry about Charlie. With an entire weekend, I wasn’t sure what to do.For the most part, the school was prepared for the final battle. All the teachers and students had finished reviewing everything, and Slater ran us through everything before we left. Slater said he would come by

Aryan-The following day, we skipped school to go to the Pack, where the Lycans disappeared. We weren’t sure how long we would need to deal with the situation. We didn’t know if it would be another situation, like when we were in Louisiana. It wasn’t a long drive, as it only took us an hour and a half to arrive. We didn’t know what to expect when we arrived, but this hadn’t been it. It looked like we pulled into a ghost town. The buildings looked like they were barely standing. Most had been burned, while a few looked like they had partially bulldozed.Only a few buildings remained, but even they looked like they had seen better days. Kierian stopped the car in the middle of the road, but no one got out. This time, we were in a large SUV since there were five of us, and we didn’t see the point in taking two vehicles. If not for the fact that we could sense others, we would have thought we had come to the wrong place. I also sensed the presence of another Lycan, but it was faint. Looki

Aryan- Over the next few days, we went through special training with Slater. Everyone, including the teachers, worked together to learn about the underground bunker until we all knew it by heart. We learned where every entrance was, including the hidden ones. I was surprised when one of the locations was inside my locker. Everyone was given a communication device and a suit to wear, which we were required to always wear just in case there was an attack. We didn’t think Charlie would show up yet since we didn’t know where he was. I still had to figure out a way to get him to come here. After school, me, Kierian, Connor, Liam, and Sylvie tried to learn more about the Pack that Connor and I visited. It took us a few days, but we managed to locate the Alpha that oversaw the Pack. He was a few years older than we were, so at least we thought it would be easy to talk with him. His name was Aaron, and he seemed nice. I wasn’t sure why he turned his Pack into a tourist spot, but that wasn’

Aryan-Once the students and teachers were in the auditorium, Kierian started telling the students what was going on. I was amazed at how flawless he was as he spoke. It was like he spent months practicing. With how his presence filled the room, I knew he was going to be an excellent leader.Unlike me, he didn’t stumble with his words. He got straight to the point. Everyone sitting in the auditorium was giving him their full attention. None of them blinked as he spoke or attempted to interrupt him. They looked eager even as they waited for him to finish.Everything I had told the teachers, he basically said the same, except in fewer words and with more confidence. When every student agreed to go through the testing to be able to help, I didn’t know why I was surprised. No one asked questions or doubted him, but that goes to show he was a well-respected future Alpha. From the front row of seats, Mr. Slater motioned for me to go to the exit door, that was left of the stage. Aryan-Monday morning, I was a mess. I was fairly sure I had dark bags under my eyes that developed an hour after school started. I was nervous, and my fingernails have looked better, but I chewed them off as I kept circling the conference room, where the meeting would be held.Yesterday, I had everything planned out about what I would say to the teachers, but now it was like my mind was blank. I was rethinking my plan to get them involved. The only teacher I knew was on my side, was Mr. Slater, but that was a given. He was the only teacher that had arrived. While he sat in one of the many chairs around the oval table, I circled around the room. Kierian, Connor, Liam, and Sylvie sat in chairs along the wall, appearing to be completely confident.“You are going to burn a hole in the rug if you keep doing what you are doing.” Slater chuckled.“Easy for you to say, all of you look like this is just another Monday. You aren’t the ones about to ask innocent people to join you on a possible
