Chapter Thirty-Seven

Esper sat in her nook reading. A week had passed since her kidnapping, and it had been the same routine every day. Maxim would wake her up to bathe and dress her, then they would spend the day in Esper's nook while Maxim worked. He was currently pacing outside the curtain, talking animatedly in Cantonese. It had been a busy day with several long phone calls and Maxim continually popping in and out of the little room.

Letting out a soft sigh, the female vampire closed her book and set it aside. All of Maxim's activity made it hard for Esper to concentrate on her reading. Feeling thirsty, she stood up and peeked out the curtain. He was still pacing around and looked like it would be a while before he was done. She usually would ask Maxim to get it for her but thought it was best not to interrupt him and decided to head down to the kitchen alone. She was almost to the door when she felt a hard tug on her arm. The young woman looked b

Two Hours Prior... Hearing the door slam, Esper knew this was her chance to escape. She waited until she heard the elevator descend then raced out of the door. Her feet pounded against the flooring as she ran down to the kitchen. The vampire couldn't risk taking the elevator down and decided to go up, hoping Maxim didn't lower the metal panels. When she reached the lower level and saw the sun shining through the windows, Esper let out a sigh of relief. Luck was on her side today. She rushed to the patio door and heaved it open, looking around for an escape route. Upon closer inspection, Esper noticed small grooves between the siding panels that were just big enough for her to wedge her fingers and toes into. Kicking off her shoes, Esper hopped onto the railing and began her ascent. Her movements were careful and methodical as she sprung fr

"Rise and shine, Kitten." Maxim's whispers stirred Esper awake. She stretched and slowly opened her eyes while he stroked her hair. He swept away the hair from her neck and leaned down to kiss the mark but stopped. "Where is it?" "What are you talking about," Esper asked as she sat up. "Your mark is gone!" Without allowing Esper to answer, Maxim grabbed her by the arm and dragged her into the bathroom. He ripped her hair to the side, and Esper saw that the bite had vanished. A small wave of relief washed over her. She didn't know how or why the mark disappeared, but she didn't care. The universe agreed that Esper wasn't meant to be with Maxim. "What did you do?" Maxim demanded. "How could I have possibly done anything? I was with you all night," Esper defended, but it didn't matter. Maxim twisted her arm as he pulled her out of the bathroom. His nails dug into her arm, almost drawing blood as he yanked her through the penthouse to the dark room. When they arrived in

The sounds of birds chirping slowly stirred Esper awake. She opened her eyes and quickly shut them. The bright sunlight was jarring and caused her head to throb. Mustering up some strength, Esper pushed herself upright and opened her lids once more. She blinked a couple of times and took in her surroundings as she adjusted to the light. The young woman was sitting on a California king bed with forest green linens. The bed was in the center of an open-air room made of white stone. Instead of windows and walls, white marble columns gave view to the vibrant green forest. Where most rooms closed off nature, this one invited it to come inside. The sight of the outdoors filled the young woman’s heart with hope. Maxim must have been dumber than he looked if he thought it was a good idea to put her in a room with no walls. She would be out of his clutch in no time. Crawling to the edge of the

Back in Esper's bedroom, Lucca and Oliver looked at each other frantically. The two men had come to check on their unconscious friend and found the bed empty. Neither one of them wanted to be the ones to share that Esper was missing again. "You should be the one to tell Wesley and Seraph," Oliver decided. "What? Why me," Lucca interjected. "Because you've known the family longer," Oliver refuted. "Technically, I've only known Esper for one day." "To hell with that," Lucca rebutted. "You are the one who talks to people for a living." "I tutor history. That does not make me automatically good at delivering bad news," Oliver said in disbelief. "Oh, come on. You tell parents all the time when your students are not doing well." Lucca reas

"How is she doing?" Seraph stood in the corridor outside of Esper's rooms. "She is sleeping for now." Ronnie stared down at the male in front of her. "What the hell was that back there? You just rescued her from one hell, why throw her into another?" "That wasn't the way I wanted Esper to learn about who she was." Loose strands of Seraph's hair covered his eyes as he cast his gaze downwards. "I wanted to ease her into the truth." "What exactly is this 'truth' that you keep talking about?" After all the crazy shit her family had been put through, Ronnie wanted some answers. "And don't try to feed me the 'it's complicated' line because that is a piss poor excuse." Letting out a sigh, Seraph rubbed his brow. "Esper's entire existence is complicated." "Try me," Ronnie huffed.&nbs

“A breeze in the blue sky, In which swallows use to fly, Scatters the scent of flowers. Oh, sacred blossoms, take these scars, take these tears, And send them fluttering across the spring sky.” Esper sat atop a marble archway in a garden of ruins. She wore a simple white dress and still had bandages covering most of her body. Her right leg swung slowly back and forth over the edge as she sang to herself. “If I wander about ashore, Along the river of fate, Will it bring me back, To the sacred flower’s estate?” A gust of wind sent Esper’s hair and dress fluttering, giving her a small repri

"Are you sure," Ronnie asked hesitantly. "Yes." Esper stared in the mirror and picked up one of her long locks. "It was one of the things Maxim was obsessed with. I want it gone." "Well," Ronnie sucked in a breath. "Here goes nothing." Ronnie picked up the scissors off of her boudoir and took a deep breath. She let out a nervous whimper as she took the first snip of Esper's hair. The strand fell to the ground and coiled up like a lone snake. The lock was soon joined by its siblings as Ronnie took more confident cuts. When she finished, Ronnie brushed the stray strands from Esper's shoulders and then turned her towards the mirror. "What do you think?" Esper sucked in a deep breath and looked into the mirror. Her once waist-long locks were now well above her shoulders in a shaggy bob and bangs. It was the first time since she was a small child that Esper had short hair. It was a lot to take in, but it was also freeing. A weight had been lifted from her shoulders,

"Hey, Senna and Asher... I know I haven't come by to see you guys... There have been so many changes happening in my life, and I guess this was one that I fought hard to not accept." Esper sat on the cold marble floor of the mausoleum in front of a memorial. The sculpture was a crystal infinity symbol with red and yellow orbs meeting in the middle. Esper placed a vase of white lilies in front of it and preened the flowers. "I miss you both a lot. Things aren't the same without the two of you. It has been tough, but I think one day, I will be okay." Esper reached out and touched the sculpture. "I hope one day we can all be reunited." "You will." Wesley stepped out from the shadows and looked at his daughter. "You always find a way to achieve your goals." Esper was surprised to see her father. The two had been dodging each othe

The sounds of soft cries stirred Esper from her sleep. She groggily opened her eyes and saw little Max standing at the side of the bed, rubbing at his eyes. “Oh, Max.” As Esper sat up, she wrapped the sheet around her torso like a makeshift dress then pulled the boy onto her lap. “How about you tell Mama what’s wrong?” “I had a bad dream.” Maxim hugged onto his mother tight as his small body shook. “I dreamt I was big and hurt you. I don’t want to hurt you, Mama.” “Oh, Sweetie.” Esper caressed Maxim’s raven locks and kissed the top of his head. “I’m sorry you had a bad dream.” Seeing the small boy distressed broke Esper’s heart. She knew the cause of his nightmare. Maxim was suffering from memory echoes, a common a

"You want to what?" Wesley was fuming. He couldn't wrap his head around what could possibly drive his daughter to take care of a person who had caused her so much pain, regardless of if they were a child now or not. "That is not a child. That is a monster who did unspeakable things to you." "Max is not a monster. He needs someone to teach him what real love is." Esper was not backing down. "Yggdrasil was able to see a spark of good in Max and gave him a second chance. Why can't you?" Seraph stood and stifled his laughter as he watched the father and daughter go back and forth. Even Esper wasn't actually his daughter; she still wanted his blessing and approval. Not understanding the heated argument, Maxim ran over to Esper and hugged her leg. He looked up at Wesley and stuck out his lip, making as stern a face as he could. "Don't yell at Mama!" Wesley paused from the toddler's words and looked down at him, then back up at Esper. He could already see the bond between mother and s

A warm breeze stirred up the grass around Seraph and Esper as they sat in the garden of ruins, enjoying the sun. They were propped up against one of the stone columns with Esper between Seraph's legs and her head resting on his chest. "So, you remember everything now?" Seraph laced his fingers with Esper's and brought them up to his mouth to kiss them. "Kind of." Esper shifted a bit to look up at her mate. "The memories are extremely vibrant and can be a little overwhelming when I try to recall too much, but I think it's all there." "Well, don't try too hard." Seraph tilted his head down and kissed the top of Esper's head. "You've been through a lot." "So, have you." Esper reached up with her free hand and ran her fingers through Seraph's black hair. Lucien’s maniacal laughter echoed throughout the grand chamber of the World Tree cloister. He was standing atop a pile of spriggan corpses, yanking on their limbs and breaking them as if they were twigs. “Are you having fun yet, Yggdrasil?” Lucien hopped off of the pile and walked over to the World Tree. He bent over and knocked on the trunk. “If you don’t send out another one of your little tree witches to entertain my new powers, I’m going to start burning your real body here. I wonder how long it will take the flames to reach your heart?” “Is that how you treat your creator?” The female’s voice set Lucien off. He turned around to see Esper pushing herself up off the ground. How was she still alive and moving? Even with a vampire’s healing abilities, the woman’s broken back would

"SERAPH!" Esper let out a blood-curdling scream as she watched her mate crumple to the ground. Becoming overwhelmed with a blinding rage, Esper pushed herself off the ground. Her breathing was erratic, and her body shook with uncontrollable anger. Lucien had just killed her mate, and she was going to make him pay. In a mad flurry, she charged at Lucien. The white-haired male smirked and back-handed her as if Esper was nothing but a fly, sending her tumbling across the ground. She stood up on shaky legs and let out a frustrated roar before rushing him again. Much to Lucien's amusement, Esper came at him head-on. He was almost within her grasp when Lucien kicked her in the ribs. His leg collided into her side with a tremendous force and sent her flying through the air. Her body crashed into one of the murals, the painted stone crumbling around her. &nbs

"Seraph?" Esper looked at the weeping wound with horror. Without so much as a wince, Seraph reached back and ripped the sword out of his back. A menacing look formed on his face as he turned around slowly and tucked Esper behind him. Standing before Seraph was Maxim's pack of mutant werewolves. "If you are going to stab me, then do yourself a favor and try to kill me." Seraph rolled his healing shoulder and took a few practice swings with the sword before chopping off the assailant's head. He then sneered at the rest of the pack. "Didn't your master teach you that wounded animals are far more dangerous than the hunter?" The remaining beasts snarled furiously at the man and came charging towards him. Taking a protective stance, Seraph guarded Esper against the werewolves. He wasn't going to let anyone take her away ever again—espec

Esper's breath was heavy and panicked as she ran through the dark woods. She paused momentarily to gain her bearings but started running once more when she heard Maxim's laughter echo throughout the forest. Esper needed to get as far away as possible. She would not be caught by him again. The vine-covered hideaway was within her eyesight when Esper felt someone tackle her to the ground. The attacker flipped her around, and she was forced to face Maxim. "I finally found you, Kitten." The crazed glow ran rampant in Maxim's eyes as his gaze bored into Esper. "And now I'm coming for you." Maxim bared his fangs and bit down on to Esper's shoulder. Esper awoke with a scream. She ripped away the bedding and frantically ran down the breezeway towards Seraph's bed chambers. Her cries echoed througho

I am going to be just fine." "I don't like the idea of leaving you here with him alone." Ronnie sat on the bed across from Esper and took up some of the clothes to help fold.
