Cora quickly scrambled to her feet. Struggling to maintain her former position. Noah was staring at her with an intense look that would make any girl swoon.
Noah was tall, even though Cora was at least 5'10, he seemed to be over 6 feets. And he towered over her in a way that made Cora self conscious.
"Cora Windsor." She said as she extended a hand to him acting coyly.
Noah was looking at her suspiciously as he took her hand in his and shook it. His hands were about two times larger than hers. And he was so warm it was weird.
"My name is Noah. Just Noah."
He said.
He didn't mention his Alpha Superior title like she expected him to have mentioned. For a teenager, he was much more calmer and laid back than she was expecting.
"You're the niece of the Alpha Superior twins Henry and Luther."
Cora cocked her head to to the side as she studied his perfect features.
"Yes. How did you know?"
"Word goes around when you're an Alpha Superior."
He turned to look at the people who already across the large pitch and some of then were making their run around the pitch.
"Wanna join in?"
"No. I wouldn't be able to catch up if I tried."
"Hnmmm."
He was the tall dark and brooding type, Cora noticed as he stared at her with his green eyes. He was wearing a tight T-shirt and simple tracksuit bottoms. His raven black hair was slicked back which implied he most likely just came out of the shower. His face was beautiful, Cora could spend all day looking at it.
"I don't really feel like running either. Want to take a walk?"
Cora's heart leapt for joy. Yes! She thought as she did back flips in her mind. All her hard work paid off after all, she might just snag the sexy Alpha Superior all to herself.
"I'd love to. Maybe you can show me the school grounds."
"Not much to see actually. It's just a regular school. Where did you stay in the human world?"
Cora looked up at him surprised that he hadn't started with the foolish question practically every wolf she had met asked.
They started off by asking if she was human or not. Which was foolish to her, she wouldn't be in Avalon High if she was a human.
"New York. Have you been there before?"
Noah nodded.
"Yes, I have."
"Where else?" She inquired trying to keep the conversation for as long as possible. Just being in his presence alone was intoxicating enough for her.
"Many parts. My father made me take frequent trips there. But I did visit New York on one occasion."
"Well, how was it?"
"Crowded." He answered as they started approaching the group of people who were practising the drill runs. A couple of them had noticed them and then briefly stopped to stare.
"Why don't we hang out sometimes?"
Cora said out of the blues, she didn't know where the courage came from, or why she said it, she just knew that the words came out of her mouth and she wasn't going to take it back.
"Cora!" An unfamiliar voice shouted her name.
Cora and Noah turned back and Cora rolled her eyes.
Great. It's the super weird guy that was supposed to be her Dux.
"You know him?" Noah asked with a raised eyebrows as Everett walked angrily to meet the both of them.
He had scented Cora on the other side of the pitch, but that was not all he could scent, he could also scent desire and lust and as much as he tried to control it, he couldn't.
"Yes. Principal Claude assigned him as my personal guide or something as equally stupid as that. He is so weird."
"Interesting." Noah murmured as he glanced briefly at Cora.
He turned to look at Cora with a small smile.
"I have to go now."
He took off running, leaving Cora with only a gust of wind to remember that he was there.
Cora glared at Everett.
"Are you happy now? You let him get away."
She whined at Everett who for some reason looked like he was mad. He had clenched his fists and he was breathing hard and fast. She studied him and found out that his eyes were still fixated on Noah till he went out of sight.
"Why did you call me?"
Everett shook his head as he soon regained control over his own body. That was horrible, he never wanted to feel that way again, so angry and overprotective. Over a girl that most likely didn't want him. He wished he could steer his wolf away from her.
"I wanted to talk to you. About the drill runs..." He said as he hastily made something up.
She looked as breathtakingly beautiful as ever and she wore her emotions proudly on her face. And he could see she was very annoyed at him. His expression softened a bit. What was she wearing? He thought as he stared at the shorts that barely covered her butt. He'd have to tell her about the dress code too.
"So? What about it? Can you make it snappy?"
"Look! We have lot's of things to talk about, drill runs are one of them. I need to give you at least the basics of how things work here, that's what a Dux does. So if you don't mind, let's go somewhere else and talk about it."
"That's what you wanted to tell me? And you honestly believed that couldn't wait a few minutes?"
Everett rolled his eyes as he tried to suppress his growing wolf who continually whined to be near her.
He took several steps back.
"Yes, that's what I wanted to tell you. And just so you know it can never work out between you and him."
Cora folded her arms and gave Everett a pointed look. She didn't think she had met someone more annoying and more frustrating than him.
"Because he's an Alpha Superior?"
She asked and Everett nodded
"That and he's not your mate."
Cora raised her eyebrow and laughed.
"You think I care about that?
"You should."
"Well honestly I don't care. He doesn't have a mate, I don't have a mate. It's perfect. Besides there's a fifty percent chance of you actually finding your mate."
"What if you find your mate?"
Cora scoffed.
"I don't know. But I don't believe there should be a moon goddess up there directing our love affairs, seems pretty shady to me..."
Everett swallowed nervously. It's not like he wanted a mate either. He just couldn't control his wolf when it came to matters like this. Everett never thought it would have been possible for him to even have a mate. Fifty percent of wolves never find their mate, so arranged marriages were the next best thing in Avalon. Years later, very few of them find their mates but many of them choose to reject them. It was a very complicated and excruciating process. But there were wolves scattered all over the world, finding a mate was harder when fate decided not to play it part.
Standing next to her was excruciating when all he wanted to do was mark her.
He looked at her one more time, she was so utterly oblivious to the fact that they were mates that it was physically painful to even look at her.
"What is this place called again?"Cora asked as she settled herself into one of the old stone benches that seemed to be carved out of the ground. The entire area was filled with stone sculptures as centrepieces and stone benches. It was eery and at the same time creative."It's called the Quadrangle. A lot of students come here to relax." Everett replied as he sat across Cora. She seemed unnerved and oblivious about every single thing that was happening around her. She was free."You brought me here to teach me the basics so I'm listening, what do I need to know about this place?""First, I have to ask. How much do you know about Avalonian history?"
Cora couldn't help but remember how Everett's touch had made her feel, like she was instantly comforted by his touch. Their conversation had ended abruptly after that, with him murmuring a string of excuses that had him practically running away from her.She found it weird but she didn't dwell on it. She had gone back to her dorm room after getting lost in the twist and turns and various hallways and stairways in the castle. But she had found her room and did some more arranging. She had slept all through dinner and woke up the next morning startled by the loud alarm bells.Zombie like she had got out of bed and hit the showers with about twenty other girls in the hallway who seemed to be unnerved about the fact that they were all taking showers
The Quadrangle was nearly empty, because it was still school hours and Cora had skipped class. The bright sun was relentless in it's shine and the harsh rays tempted Cora to leave the Quadrangle but there was no where else for her to go so she stayed put. She knew it wasn't good for her school records skipping class, but what good were Defence classes when she couldn't even connect to her wolf. She couldn't go to her dorm because that would be much worse, a matron might see her and punish her for violating the rules and Cora didn't want to draw too much attention to herself. The past two weeks had gone in a blur, she was struggling with her classes, friends she found hard to make and Everett kept her on her toes with his persistent lessons that have yielded little results. At least she knew about her Avalonian history now, but it wasn't the main thing she was bothered about. Cora was lonely. And tired and most importan
The death of an Alpha meant a severance in connection from the members of the pack and the Alpha. Sometimes, most of the people who were close to the Alpha could feel the bond snapping, like a physical bone in their body was being broken. The Luna felt it most and sometimes in the battlefield, if the Alpha fell, the Luna did too, because of the intensity of the pain.Even though Alpha Superior Henry and Luther had no Luna, the pain of their loss was a physical living thing that could be felt all around the pack house as Cora walked through it. It could be seen in their faces and in the sombre mood the air carried, it could even be felt in their voices and their damp eyes. When she and Noah had rushed back to school, Principal Claude was already waiting for her, with two werewolves from her pack waiting to collect her and Everett. The Principal had insisted that
Each and every Alpha was unique and different.Alpha Augustus of the Sole pack led the procession, even though he was the second oldest Alpha in Avalon, he clearly showed little signs of aging. It was rumoured that he had lived for a century and a half. Although the hair on his head was a startling silver white, his sun kissed skin was still smooth and glistening with aged youth. He also wore white pants with no shirt at all, leaving the muscles of his back completely inked in tattoos.Noah followed closely behind and Cora couldn't help but notice how he stuck out like a sore thumb in the gathering of Alphas. Even though he kept a brave face, Cora knew that he must have been nervous.Alpha Abraham of the Custodes Lunae followed closely with his head bowed lo
Walking back to the girls dorm after a particular boring class in Avalonian history that had Cora dozing a few times, she bumped into some new friends she had met earlier. The fact that she was the daughter of the most likely to be next Alpha Superior of the Filli Luna pack had skyrocketed her fame in school. And also gave her a rise in the social ladder. Suddenly, girls who shied away from her were bold enough to call her name and say hi and a few of them had offered to assist her in her courses. They were all so nice that it was sickening. Cora remembered that when she arrived, they all watched her from a safe distance.Normally, Cora would have been elated with the new found fame and basked in it but there was too much on her mind for her to actually focus on it. She had been in a terrible state of emotional turm
Cora gaped openly as she observed his sharp jaw, chin, and cheekbones. On either side of his Romanesque nose were two blazing hazel eyes. Spiked, warm brown fringed with smooth green. His dark brows were actually graceful, but currently furrowed in a frown. All of it was framed by thick, warm dark chocolate curls. His chest was the one she couldn't tear away her eyes from. His physical prowess could not be denied even by Cora, she had always knew that he was attractive, but his arrogance and seriousness had always made her quickly overlook the fact that he was.But now she was standing in front of him and salivating over his body. Everett raised her eyebrows and a very small part said she should get a hold of herself. She let out a shaky sigh and quickly looked away."What the hell are you doing here?" He ask
"Abria Bechet you say?" Principal Claude asked and Everett nodded."I know her. She's a powerful mage. If Cora sees her, Cora might just have a chance."Everett was honestly much more happy about the fact that Cora would be getting her wolf back.He didn't want to report to the Principal about the Mage, he didn't want to tell the Principal that she was one step closer, but the Principal had called for him just a few hours after dawn and demanded that he gave him an update. He couldn't say no and he couldn't come up with lies for fear of Principal Claude being overly suspicious about him. So he had told him about the Mage, praying and hoping that he knew nothing about the Mage. He was wrong. Principal Claude was the tenth principal of Avalon Academy and he had reigned over the school for almost thirty years. He was already an old man with greying hair. He had served on the Lex Luna, the wolf council during his youth before
Cora knew they were in trouble the minute they reached Avalon. And not just any trouble, big trouble. Her father mind linked her immediately she was in the vicinity and he seemed angry and worried altogether. She was even more worried about Viola, who it seemed her father had figured out that she wasn't in Avalon, with Noah, who wasn't exactly the best person at the moment for her to be spending her time with. "We're in big trouble." She whispered to Everett as they neared the school and he turned to look at her. She quickly mind linked him telling him what her father had said and he glanced at Noah and Viola who were laughing together. "Shit!" He said out loud and Noah stopped to turn and look at them. "Everything alright?" He asked and Cora shook her head. "Not exactly. They know we're missing in school." Viola's eyes widen with fear and dread. "Wait! Who knows? Does my Dad know?" She asked with dread in her voice and Cora nodded slowly. "Yes, I'm sorry but he knows.
The Alpha convention like all things came and went. The entire saga had gone fairly okay. All the nightmares that Viola had about it did not come to past. Even though, the Alpha convention left a difficult choice for Viola – ‘Compete in the Alpha trials or marry Sylvester.’ It was something in the future and a lesson from dreading the convention so much was to not let the future steal the joy of the present because it was truly unpredictable. Now was the only thing to focus on and Viola only focused on now. She returned to school as quickly as she was allowed. She had come to love Avalon high, not the classes or its ever-looking students but the freedom. Freedom to do more or less. Before, when Viola was just Viola Hawkins school was an escape and now it still was. Here, she had Cora, Everett and Noah. Noah and her had become even closer. It was like they suddenly realised how quickly things can change and decided to use the time they had for as much as they could together. It bega
Viola had begun home training with Malachi. He was a really quiet man, comfortable with not talking. Viola had heard that he was one of the best fight strategists in the pack and in Avalon in general. He fought like he was two or three Lycan, one attack always built up to several others. When his blows connected it was like he had extra limbs but in truth he had just planned his actions in advance. He was also the best in terms of hand to hand combat. Most lycans would need to shift to fight better, but Malachi never needed to shift. He always trained her in his human form. Always. “Today, Viola the objective is to fight without your wolf.” He said. Her wolf had greatly exceeded his expectations and it was far more superior than it should have been for an halfbreed. “Hand to hand combat. There are situations where we cannot change into our wolf so it is important to be able to be excellent at fighting without the wolf.” Malachi said and Viola nodded. “The first thing I want you to
The Alpha convention had finally arrived after so much preparations. It was arguably the biggest event in the calendar of Avalon. It was a first for Viola, a beginning in Viola’s full-time journey as a lycan in Ortus Solis. It was astonishing that in a matter of months Viola had gone from an invisible halfbreed in Avalon Academy to being one of the highlights of the show. To make an appearance and join the most powerful and elite circle of Avalon. Itwas important to Eli. A successful introduction would make Viola’s presence at the Alpha trials more likely especially if acted like she belonged. Viola remembered her sister, Freya’s words to her. You have to remember ‘you are a part of the family’. Viola also remembered her father’s warning and his advice that she should correct her mistakes so he wouldn't have to. Thinking about the night made Viola anxious. A million things could go wrong and it would all be her fault. As if Noah could read her mind, he mindlinked her. “Hey, I ca
Viola’s father had asked her to come to his private training arena. He wanted to examine her himself, see what they had taught her in school. And most importantly, he wanted to know how powerful she was.If she was strong enough, fast enough to even stand a chance in the Alpha trials. This idea of examining her made Viola nervous all through the night. She even had a nightmare which made her even more nervous. She didn't know what to expect but she knew it would be difficult. The morning could not come soon enough as the anticipation of the examination was actually more terrifying than the examination."Thank goodness. It’s time to get it over with." Viola found consolation in the fact that the day had broken, Lillian still complained on some of her forms."You'll do good. You're strong and fast. Don't worry about it."Lilian patted her back as she esc
Viola had started to get Avalon. She no longer got confused about where her classes were or got lost in them. She had figured out her own little routine and it worked for her. She woke up at 5:30 am to have some time off, to take a run or a walk or to shift to her werewolf form. She did it to introspect alone and enjoy the cool breeze. It was really vital to her rapid adjustment and it helped her get more in tune with her wolf. At 6:30am she would return to her room and start to prepare for classes. She would go through her classes and what they would learn. It had helped a lot because the classes no longer seemed to be taught in some hidden ancient language, she started to understand her classes better. At 7:30am Noah would knock on her door and they would go get breakfast at the hall together. Sometimes, they saw Cora and Everett. After that, she attended her classes and practised with her dux, Lillian. The work part of her day usually ended when she was done with Lillian and ev
The past few days had been quite blissful for Viola. And only one person was responsible – Noah. Noah and Viola had been spending their free time every day with each other. Between them, things had been great. Noah looked forward to even more time between them, without classes, without Lillian, the dux and without any Alpha talk. They both deserved the peace he thought to himself as he researched the destination that would be most suitable. The place would have to be peaceful above all with as little intervention from their routine lives. Luckily for him, he knew a pair of mates, Everett and Cora. Being the third wheel in their friendship had come with its benefits after all. Even though he had been frustrated by it back then. He knew the perfect spot. It was a couple’s resort in Avalon that Cora gushed about for weeks after they went. And as much as Everett tried to play it down as a causal outing, Everett was really glad he made her so happy. The retreat was called Magarita, fo
Each pack had their pack house, a communal property in which all members of a pack were welcomed. The pack houses varied in design, beauty and size. In the earlier eras, it was more about functionality of the pack houses with focus on pragmaticism. It was typical to have a large, round bunch of rocks as some pack houses but the Ortus Solis pack house was truly an architectural masterpiece. The pack house was the biggest one, but it did not compromise on style. The house had over 150 rooms, each uniquely designed. The floors made of marbles, and thanks to Rosalina who managed the house neatly. Pack members could see reflections of themselves looking at the floor. In the Alpha room, Alpha superior Eli sat. He was thinking about the incoming Alpha Convention. Alpha Superior Eli was a handsome man, his skin showed little wear and tear but beneath it all. He was almost as handsome as he was in his younger days. Even with his slowed aging due to his strong
Viola’s dux was Lillian, a fifth-year student of Avalon Academy. She didn’t seem to have much personality and seemed to have mastered the act of sneaking up on people. Viola had to guess it was due to her invisible aura, Lilian was so stealthy she could have been standing next to Viola for seconds and Viola wouldn't know. Lillian also barely spoke, and every time she spoke it was only because it was necessary. She had brown short hair that covered her eyes and dark brown skin. She was tall and lanky, way taller than Viola ever imagined a girl would be. But her stature wasn't so frightening since she looked frail all the time.“Viola. You are not concentrating hard enough.” She said gently. It was Viola’s first training session with her d
