Cora Windsor did not like the look the boy the principal claimed was her personal guide was giving her. It was an intense look and it made her very uncomfortable. So uncomfortable that her stomach felt sick.
The Principal and Sydney left both of them after brief introductions.
"So, Everett... Nice to meet you." Cora said as she stretched her hand to give him a polite handshake.
Her jumped up in surprise and moved away from her hand.
What a weirdo.
Cora thought as he watched him with amusement.
"Well, handshakes must not be your thing. Are you a germophobe or what?" She asked as she laughed nervously.
Everett cleared his throat as he looked away. It was hard keeping his wolf in control in front of her when all he wanted to do was snatch her and take her in his arms. He wished she could feel the pain he was feeling, the way his wolf whined at her. But she was utterly clueless and it was physically painful.
"I'll get someone to take you to the girls dorm. It's in the right wing, right above those stairs."
"That's all? Nothing about being my personal guide? No useful information?"
Cora asked as she scoffed.
"I'll be seeing you later. For now I think it's best you get settled in."
Everett gritted his teeth as he practically sprinted away from her.
"Okay, everyone here is so weird." She murmured as she looked at the stairs that were supposed to lead her to her room.
By sheer luck, Cora was able to navigate her way back into her dorm room just like Sydney had shown her.
She walked into the room and found two girls going though her stuff.
They stopped the minute she entered.
The two girls stood up and glared at her. They were tall and lean, with long dark hair and the same expression on their faces. Twins.
"Hello. Why are you going through my stuff?" Cora asked as she snatched her laptop away from one of them.
"Those things don't work here." The girl commented. She had long flowing dark hair and a mean look.
"I know. My name is Cora Windsor."
She said to the girls, they continued to watch her like she had horns on her head.
There was one of them on the bed with black woolen hair and smooth olive, her expression was kinder than the rest.
"Why do you smell human? Are you human?"
She asked with a raised eyebrow.
Cora shook her head as she put her stuff on her unmade bed.
"I'm not human. I'm a werewolf like you."
One of the twins scoffed.
"You certainly don't smell like one. What happened to you?"
Cora turned back to them with her hands on her hips.
"Why don't we start with some introductions first."
"My name is Cora Windsor."
"What pack?" the other twin girl asked.
"Filli Lunae."
The girl on the bed scoffed, her expression was haughty and dismissive.
"Well, looks like it. Filli Lunae has the highest rate of messed up werewolves."
Cora wanted to utter a retort but the truth was she didn't really know much about her pack. Her pack although was said to be the largest pack in Avalon and their pack wolves were notorious for illegally crossing the veil and going to the human world.
"So what are your names?" She asked ignoring the statement. She was determined to make friends in the academy, even if it was going to be hard.
"My name is Kira. This is my twin sister Ryn. Ruber Luna pack" The two twins pointed at each other. Their movements were so coordinated it seemed as if they moved in a fluid like motion that suggested that they were one.
She turned to the other girl lying on the bed with nothing but a tank top and shorts.
"Diana. Ortus Solis."
There was a haughty expression on her face, as if she expected Cora to respect her because she was a member of the head pack.
"Well, nice to meet you all. I hope we can be friends."
Her statement wasn't replied and Cora turned back to unpacking her stuff.
Though unpacking under the watchful eyes of her new roommates was a little strange, Cora resolved to make the best out of her situation, but she didn't know how.
She couldn't leave the confines of her room for fear that she would get the same strange stares that she had been getting all day.
She sighed and flopped on her newly made bed as she memorised her schedule. She had Avalonian history and Human Behaviour the next day which was a Monday, Avalonian political system and Defence classes the next day, Study of Human history and Magic classes on a Wednesday, Thursday was dedicated to Defence classes again and Meditation classes. The whole of Friday was used for training.
How the hell was she ever going to get used to all of it?
She asked herself as she reread her schedule. It wasn't as if they were going to be having normal classes. They were not. It was going to be classes she had never in her entire life taken before. Now she was regretting her parents lying to Principal Claude that she had the basic knowledge of Werewolf history. The only knowledge she had of being a werewolf was the little book of Avalon history she skimmed through the morning she left for the Academy.
Her head was filled with thoughts of teenage boy bands and how she would access her Instagram account.
"Ever been to the human world?" She asked randomly as she turned to her roommates.
Kira and Ryn were lying on their bed with their lips entangled. It was dangerously disturbing.
"Once." It was Diana who answered.
"How was it?" She asked Diana who pretended to be very uninterested in the conversation.
"It was boring."
Cora furrowed her eyebrows in confusion, she certainly thought the opposite. Avalon was boring to her.
"How was it boring? What year did you go?" She asked and Diana opened her eyes and glared at her.
"I went in 2010."
"Yea that was a great year but honestly nothing much was going on then. You should see it now. I spent my whole life in New York and Washington."
"Well, no wonder you smell like a human."
"Yea, well maybe."
She answered with a smile.
She couldn't help but remember her human friends, Rosie whom she had to lie to that she was moving to Alaska. It was the only place she was sure Rosie would never come looking for. She was pretty sure her friend must be worried sick that she couldn't contact her. Her on and off boyfriend Damien who she wished she could make jealous by posting a picture of her and Alpha Noah.
She wondered if he had gotten back together with Abby the lead cheerleader.
Suddenly there was a loud sound that seemed to pierce the walls of the room and it made Cora's ears hurt while the twins Kira and Ryn growled and thrashed around their bed uncontrollably. Diana looked mildly uncomfortable but all she did was grit her teeth.
The moment it stopped, the twins jumped out of their bed and retrieved their clothes.
"What's going on?"
She asked as she watched Diana who was watching her with a strange expression.
"Drill runs for year three. Happens once in a week for each class."
Cora sat up right.
"Wait, I'm in year three!"
"Well then, you better get ready." Diana said as she relaxed back on her bed.
Kira and Ryn were already pushing their way out of the door in identical leggings and tank tops, Cora on the other hand really couldn't decide on what to wear.
What do they do in drill runs?
What do they wear to drill runs?
She asked herself as she hastily stuffed her butt in shorts and a baggy T-shirt.
She picked her sneakers and hurriedly put it on.
"Is that what you're wearing?" Diana asked with a raised eyebrow.
"Do you have a better option? Because frankly I don't see you providing me with solutions." She snapped as she walked out of the room.
Apparently pack runs were a lot more serious than Cora had anticipated. People were shoving each other, growling and snarling at each other as they ran down the stairs.
Cora flattened herself against the wall so she wouldn't have to be part of the commotion watching them with awe and a little shock.
When the hallway was clear, she followed them with a light jog as she tried to catch up.
She didn't know where they were running to, but Cora knew she was far behind as she watched the students of year three littered on the pitch running so fast she could only see blurs of some of them.
They ran so fast and they were still in human form, she thought as she finally reached the large pitch covered in a bed of green grass.
She stopped to catch her breath and before she knew it she went tumbling down. Face down on the dry grass, Cora turned to see that someone had collided into her and the person didn't so much as stop with a backward glance. In fact, as she tried to stand up, the person was already halfway across the pitch.
"Are you okay?"
She looked up, shielding her face and squinting from the direct sunlight.
Her jaw dropped as she realised who it was.
The young Alpha Superior Noah.
Cora quickly scrambled to her feet. Struggling to maintain her former position. Noah was staring at her with an intense look that would make any girl swoon.Noah was tall, even though Cora was at least 5'10, he seemed to be over 6 feets. And he towered over her in a way that made Cora self conscious."Cora Windsor." She said as she extended a hand to him acting coyly.Noah was looking at her suspiciously as he took her hand in his and shook it. His hands were about two times larger than hers. And he was so warm it was weird."My name is Noah. Just Noah."He said.He didn't mention his Alpha Superior title like she expected him to
"What is this place called again?"Cora asked as she settled herself into one of the old stone benches that seemed to be carved out of the ground. The entire area was filled with stone sculptures as centrepieces and stone benches. It was eery and at the same time creative."It's called the Quadrangle. A lot of students come here to relax." Everett replied as he sat across Cora. She seemed unnerved and oblivious about every single thing that was happening around her. She was free."You brought me here to teach me the basics so I'm listening, what do I need to know about this place?""First, I have to ask. How much do you know about Avalonian history?"
Cora couldn't help but remember how Everett's touch had made her feel, like she was instantly comforted by his touch. Their conversation had ended abruptly after that, with him murmuring a string of excuses that had him practically running away from her.She found it weird but she didn't dwell on it. She had gone back to her dorm room after getting lost in the twist and turns and various hallways and stairways in the castle. But she had found her room and did some more arranging. She had slept all through dinner and woke up the next morning startled by the loud alarm bells.Zombie like she had got out of bed and hit the showers with about twenty other girls in the hallway who seemed to be unnerved about the fact that they were all taking showers
The Quadrangle was nearly empty, because it was still school hours and Cora had skipped class. The bright sun was relentless in it's shine and the harsh rays tempted Cora to leave the Quadrangle but there was no where else for her to go so she stayed put. She knew it wasn't good for her school records skipping class, but what good were Defence classes when she couldn't even connect to her wolf. She couldn't go to her dorm because that would be much worse, a matron might see her and punish her for violating the rules and Cora didn't want to draw too much attention to herself. The past two weeks had gone in a blur, she was struggling with her classes, friends she found hard to make and Everett kept her on her toes with his persistent lessons that have yielded little results. At least she knew about her Avalonian history now, but it wasn't the main thing she was bothered about. Cora was lonely. And tired and most importan
The death of an Alpha meant a severance in connection from the members of the pack and the Alpha. Sometimes, most of the people who were close to the Alpha could feel the bond snapping, like a physical bone in their body was being broken. The Luna felt it most and sometimes in the battlefield, if the Alpha fell, the Luna did too, because of the intensity of the pain.Even though Alpha Superior Henry and Luther had no Luna, the pain of their loss was a physical living thing that could be felt all around the pack house as Cora walked through it. It could be seen in their faces and in the sombre mood the air carried, it could even be felt in their voices and their damp eyes. When she and Noah had rushed back to school, Principal Claude was already waiting for her, with two werewolves from her pack waiting to collect her and Everett. The Principal had insisted that
Each and every Alpha was unique and different.Alpha Augustus of the Sole pack led the procession, even though he was the second oldest Alpha in Avalon, he clearly showed little signs of aging. It was rumoured that he had lived for a century and a half. Although the hair on his head was a startling silver white, his sun kissed skin was still smooth and glistening with aged youth. He also wore white pants with no shirt at all, leaving the muscles of his back completely inked in tattoos.Noah followed closely behind and Cora couldn't help but notice how he stuck out like a sore thumb in the gathering of Alphas. Even though he kept a brave face, Cora knew that he must have been nervous.Alpha Abraham of the Custodes Lunae followed closely with his head bowed lo
Walking back to the girls dorm after a particular boring class in Avalonian history that had Cora dozing a few times, she bumped into some new friends she had met earlier. The fact that she was the daughter of the most likely to be next Alpha Superior of the Filli Luna pack had skyrocketed her fame in school. And also gave her a rise in the social ladder. Suddenly, girls who shied away from her were bold enough to call her name and say hi and a few of them had offered to assist her in her courses. They were all so nice that it was sickening. Cora remembered that when she arrived, they all watched her from a safe distance.Normally, Cora would have been elated with the new found fame and basked in it but there was too much on her mind for her to actually focus on it. She had been in a terrible state of emotional turm
Cora gaped openly as she observed his sharp jaw, chin, and cheekbones. On either side of his Romanesque nose were two blazing hazel eyes. Spiked, warm brown fringed with smooth green. His dark brows were actually graceful, but currently furrowed in a frown. All of it was framed by thick, warm dark chocolate curls. His chest was the one she couldn't tear away her eyes from. His physical prowess could not be denied even by Cora, she had always knew that he was attractive, but his arrogance and seriousness had always made her quickly overlook the fact that he was.But now she was standing in front of him and salivating over his body. Everett raised her eyebrows and a very small part said she should get a hold of herself. She let out a shaky sigh and quickly looked away."What the hell are you doing here?" He ask
Cora knew they were in trouble the minute they reached Avalon. And not just any trouble, big trouble. Her father mind linked her immediately she was in the vicinity and he seemed angry and worried altogether. She was even more worried about Viola, who it seemed her father had figured out that she wasn't in Avalon, with Noah, who wasn't exactly the best person at the moment for her to be spending her time with. "We're in big trouble." She whispered to Everett as they neared the school and he turned to look at her. She quickly mind linked him telling him what her father had said and he glanced at Noah and Viola who were laughing together. "Shit!" He said out loud and Noah stopped to turn and look at them. "Everything alright?" He asked and Cora shook her head. "Not exactly. They know we're missing in school." Viola's eyes widen with fear and dread. "Wait! Who knows? Does my Dad know?" She asked with dread in her voice and Cora nodded slowly. "Yes, I'm sorry but he knows.
The Alpha convention like all things came and went. The entire saga had gone fairly okay. All the nightmares that Viola had about it did not come to past. Even though, the Alpha convention left a difficult choice for Viola – ‘Compete in the Alpha trials or marry Sylvester.’ It was something in the future and a lesson from dreading the convention so much was to not let the future steal the joy of the present because it was truly unpredictable. Now was the only thing to focus on and Viola only focused on now. She returned to school as quickly as she was allowed. She had come to love Avalon high, not the classes or its ever-looking students but the freedom. Freedom to do more or less. Before, when Viola was just Viola Hawkins school was an escape and now it still was. Here, she had Cora, Everett and Noah. Noah and her had become even closer. It was like they suddenly realised how quickly things can change and decided to use the time they had for as much as they could together. It bega
Viola had begun home training with Malachi. He was a really quiet man, comfortable with not talking. Viola had heard that he was one of the best fight strategists in the pack and in Avalon in general. He fought like he was two or three Lycan, one attack always built up to several others. When his blows connected it was like he had extra limbs but in truth he had just planned his actions in advance. He was also the best in terms of hand to hand combat. Most lycans would need to shift to fight better, but Malachi never needed to shift. He always trained her in his human form. Always. “Today, Viola the objective is to fight without your wolf.” He said. Her wolf had greatly exceeded his expectations and it was far more superior than it should have been for an halfbreed. “Hand to hand combat. There are situations where we cannot change into our wolf so it is important to be able to be excellent at fighting without the wolf.” Malachi said and Viola nodded. “The first thing I want you to
The Alpha convention had finally arrived after so much preparations. It was arguably the biggest event in the calendar of Avalon. It was a first for Viola, a beginning in Viola’s full-time journey as a lycan in Ortus Solis. It was astonishing that in a matter of months Viola had gone from an invisible halfbreed in Avalon Academy to being one of the highlights of the show. To make an appearance and join the most powerful and elite circle of Avalon. Itwas important to Eli. A successful introduction would make Viola’s presence at the Alpha trials more likely especially if acted like she belonged. Viola remembered her sister, Freya’s words to her. You have to remember ‘you are a part of the family’. Viola also remembered her father’s warning and his advice that she should correct her mistakes so he wouldn't have to. Thinking about the night made Viola anxious. A million things could go wrong and it would all be her fault. As if Noah could read her mind, he mindlinked her. “Hey, I ca
Viola’s father had asked her to come to his private training arena. He wanted to examine her himself, see what they had taught her in school. And most importantly, he wanted to know how powerful she was.If she was strong enough, fast enough to even stand a chance in the Alpha trials. This idea of examining her made Viola nervous all through the night. She even had a nightmare which made her even more nervous. She didn't know what to expect but she knew it would be difficult. The morning could not come soon enough as the anticipation of the examination was actually more terrifying than the examination."Thank goodness. It’s time to get it over with." Viola found consolation in the fact that the day had broken, Lillian still complained on some of her forms."You'll do good. You're strong and fast. Don't worry about it."Lilian patted her back as she esc
Viola had started to get Avalon. She no longer got confused about where her classes were or got lost in them. She had figured out her own little routine and it worked for her. She woke up at 5:30 am to have some time off, to take a run or a walk or to shift to her werewolf form. She did it to introspect alone and enjoy the cool breeze. It was really vital to her rapid adjustment and it helped her get more in tune with her wolf. At 6:30am she would return to her room and start to prepare for classes. She would go through her classes and what they would learn. It had helped a lot because the classes no longer seemed to be taught in some hidden ancient language, she started to understand her classes better. At 7:30am Noah would knock on her door and they would go get breakfast at the hall together. Sometimes, they saw Cora and Everett. After that, she attended her classes and practised with her dux, Lillian. The work part of her day usually ended when she was done with Lillian and ev
The past few days had been quite blissful for Viola. And only one person was responsible – Noah. Noah and Viola had been spending their free time every day with each other. Between them, things had been great. Noah looked forward to even more time between them, without classes, without Lillian, the dux and without any Alpha talk. They both deserved the peace he thought to himself as he researched the destination that would be most suitable. The place would have to be peaceful above all with as little intervention from their routine lives. Luckily for him, he knew a pair of mates, Everett and Cora. Being the third wheel in their friendship had come with its benefits after all. Even though he had been frustrated by it back then. He knew the perfect spot. It was a couple’s resort in Avalon that Cora gushed about for weeks after they went. And as much as Everett tried to play it down as a causal outing, Everett was really glad he made her so happy. The retreat was called Magarita, fo
Each pack had their pack house, a communal property in which all members of a pack were welcomed. The pack houses varied in design, beauty and size. In the earlier eras, it was more about functionality of the pack houses with focus on pragmaticism. It was typical to have a large, round bunch of rocks as some pack houses but the Ortus Solis pack house was truly an architectural masterpiece. The pack house was the biggest one, but it did not compromise on style. The house had over 150 rooms, each uniquely designed. The floors made of marbles, and thanks to Rosalina who managed the house neatly. Pack members could see reflections of themselves looking at the floor. In the Alpha room, Alpha superior Eli sat. He was thinking about the incoming Alpha Convention. Alpha Superior Eli was a handsome man, his skin showed little wear and tear but beneath it all. He was almost as handsome as he was in his younger days. Even with his slowed aging due to his strong
Viola’s dux was Lillian, a fifth-year student of Avalon Academy. She didn’t seem to have much personality and seemed to have mastered the act of sneaking up on people. Viola had to guess it was due to her invisible aura, Lilian was so stealthy she could have been standing next to Viola for seconds and Viola wouldn't know. Lillian also barely spoke, and every time she spoke it was only because it was necessary. She had brown short hair that covered her eyes and dark brown skin. She was tall and lanky, way taller than Viola ever imagined a girl would be. But her stature wasn't so frightening since she looked frail all the time.“Viola. You are not concentrating hard enough.” She said gently. It was Viola’s first training session with her d
