At that moment, her face was priceless.

Her face, which was sagging with age, shifted from flushed to pale and back to flushed again.

Her tears stopped suddenly, and her face twisted in shock.

She asked, “What did you say?”

I repeated, “This is my house. Get out.”

I did not feel like a bad person for breaking up a couple.

Instead, I felt like I had done something really good.

I was trying to kick a wicked woman, full of bad intentions and cruel behavior, out of my house.

It felt completely justified, even righteous.

She froze. Her mouth opened and closed, but no words came out.

Then, she clenched her teeth, her brows furrowed, and the veins in her forehead started to bulge.

She got angry.

She screamed at me, “You bastard! You’re the one who hid the money!”

I stayed quiet and did not deny it.

She got even angrier. “You’re disgusting! How could your dad have a child like you?!”

Then, she started laughing.

I said, “I’m doing fine.” “Is your stepmom okay?” “She’s fine.” “That’s good.”During our twenty-minute visit, he spent most of the time crying and sitting in silence. He told me a lot of things. He told me to take care of myself and look after Scarlett. In the end, I could not help but ask, “Do you blame me?”He looked at me and said, “How could I blame you? I owe you an apology.”His voice was calm, like he was stating a simple fact.I watched as he walked away. Once I stepped outside the prison gates, I could not hold it in anymore and burst into tears. His apology brought back memories of the moments of kindness buried under all the anger and violence. All those messy, bittersweet memories hit me like a wave but disappeared with my tears. He gave my mom the house and car but fought to keep custody of me and raised me.On my birthdays, he would act annoyed but still buy me a cake.Late at night, when we were both too hungry to sleep, we would share a single piece of

She sat on the couch like a child who had made a mistake and quietly fiddled with the house deed. She loved looking pretty and often spent her free time dressing up.But at some point, gray hairs had appeared at her temples. Every time I noticed them, it made my eyes sting, and I felt like crying. She touched her face and said, “The first time your dad brought me here and introduced me to you, he said I was your mom. From that day, I told myself that no matter what happened before, from now on, I’m your mom.”Then, she thought of something and suddenly laughed. “That time you told me to get out, your dad came to confront me. I told him it was all my fault. I said I found out you used the 20,000 dollars to frame me, and in my anger, I hit you. “I even told him I was your mom and promised to take care of you and help you grow up. I guess I am pathetic.”She handed me the property deed, raised her chin, and said, “Listen to your mom, you brat.”I felt a lump in my throat, and tear

It was just the three of them eating together. My dad knew my godfather had already drunk a lot and could not drink anymore, but he kept pushing him to do it. He even called him a coward. • The Annoying Stepmom   Chapter 20

She forced a smile and nervously asked, “Did you pass the background check?”I looked into her unfocused, worn-out eyes and casually replied, “I’m not taking the exam anymore. I called the police and had my dad arrested.”She kept staring at me. Her mouth moved, but no words came out.The first time I saw Scarlett was almost ten years ago.She had aged a lot. She was already short, dark, and overweight to begin with. Over time, she was even darker, shorter, and heavier. She had developed many health problems—a fatty liver, high blood pressure, and arrhythmia. The ironic thing was that my dad was healthy and only got sick once a year. She worried every day that the debt collectors would come after us while my dad slept peacefully and without care.I felt like this was so unfair. It really was.Even when my dad hurt Scarlett so badly, she still would not call the police or press charges. She always tried to make peace. It was not fair. So, I took action and sent my dad to priso

Scarlett tried to explain to him, but he still would not listen.I could faintly hear Scarlett crying and saying, “Stop, Warren. Please stop. I beg you. Even if you kill me later, it doesn’t matter. This is Pearl’s future. You can’t ruin it…”I walked the supervisors out, and they did not look happy.I watched them leave without saying anything to explain myself. Scarlett’s last words kept playing in my head. After so many years, I realized I should hate my dad.But how could I hate him?I could barely remember my mom’s face anymore, no matter how hard I tried. She had already given up on me. The only person in the world who was still close to me by blood was my dad.I walked upstairs and passed by my dad’s friends as they hurriedly left.Seeing their panicked faces, I suddenly had a bad feeling. My heart started beating faster, like it knew something was coming.I quickly took the stairs and grabbed the railing as I rushed up.The door was slightly open. I pushed it, and it

The department I applied to was far and not well-known, but there were still a lot of people trying to get in.Before the results of the final background check were even out, Scarlett was already celebrating. She kept telling the neighbors that I had passed the civil service exam and got a stable government job. She was so proud and said I had become successful. She would say how the little girl everyone doubted had become the most successful one.She was praising me so much that the neighbors got jealous. But neither of us expected that the department I applied to would come to our house for an interview.I had researched and told Scarlett that usually, they just visited people in their hometown communities or schools. A home visit was usually just a formality. But every department did things differently, and each supervisor had their own way of handling things.Still, Scarlett was really scared. She kept thinking of all the things that might happen. She was afraid that even t
