When Miles and Chloe walked back into the room minutes later, Chloe had a shy look on her face and my brother seemed more relaxed than he had been all day. I felt more relaxed with Chloe’s emotions exuding less hostility than before.

“Hey cara mia,” I crooned, opening my arms as Chloe walked towards me. She smiled at my Italian nickname for her in that sultry way that always gets me going. I kissed her head, and then her nose. “Did you have a good talk?”

She looked back shyly at my brother, and he gave her a reassuring smile. “Yes,” she said softly.

“Good,” I leaned in and whispered in her ear. “Because we need to have a talk too later. About a gunshot.”

Her eyes narrowed. “It was just a scratch.”

“Bull snarky,” Winnie scoffed. “We had to bathe you thoroughly because of your scratch.”

“What?” my brother huffed menacingly. His eyes darted to Winnie, assessing him, and then at the other men around the room. All of them were very gay, except maybe Cindy, who calls himself aroma
