Weeks had passed since the werewolf attack. The royal mermaid guard, alarmed by the frequent attacks near the sea, had forbidden the sirens from interacting with humans until further notice. They could only surface if they stayed close enough to the ocean and we always had to inform the mermaids guard about our return to the sea.
There was no curfew at the moment, as they were still investigating the motive behind the attacks. Were they planned by the irish syrens, or did the werewolves have a plan to access the kingdom of the sea?
After the accident on the beach, people and humans were closing their businesses early. The official police report claimed that a gang of killers had arrived in the city and attacked the party. The only survivors were three men who could only vaguely remember what had happened and one girl. Due to the trauma they had witnessed, they couldn't provide more details to the authorities. Upon hearing the news, we confirmed that Seila's spell had worked, and the werewolf hunters barely remembered how they had survived the attack. Obviously, being hunters themselves, they would have drawn their own conclusions about what had happened that night. I hoped they wouldn't associate the attack with the mermaid world and leave us in peace. I hadn't heard from those men since then, and a part of me, conflicted and disappointed, had wished to see that human man I had spoken to before the attack, one last time.
Seila continued putting all her energies on her work as makeup artist, now boasting to her friends about her new hero, the human Matias, who had rescued her, and how he had been enchanted by her voice, crying and begging to never forget her.
Yryhnna and I would laugh every time she told the story, as she always contradicted herself and added qualities to the human named Mathias that neither Yryhnna nor I remembered.
In the morning, I made myself breakfast, packed my books in my pearl bag, and put on a turquoise dress with floral patterns. I swam to the surface. Now there were guards ascending to the surface, registering every mermaid or marine creature leaving the kingdom. I had to arrive before sunset, or they would send coastal guards to search for me. And my father would start to worry.
When I reached the surface, I didn't have to worry about getting dressed, as I was already wearing the dress. I put on a pair of shoes from my bag and felt the wind move my wet hair. I don't like wearing underwear, it's uncomfortable for me to walk wearing it, but Seila made me understand that sometimes it's fun to wear underwear, especially if you want to look seductive for guys. I felt the sun's rays warming my legs and back. I headed towards the beach, filled with human visitors peacefully bathing in the water, unaware of our existence. I made my way to the center of New Orleans, near the coast, where there was a bookstore I used to frequent. When I arrived, the receptionist greeted me with a smile.
"Beautiful Mia, what a pleasure to see you here," a girl with jet-black eyes and curly hair falling on both sides of her cheeks greeted me.
"Hello Tatiana, glad to see you." I answer to her smiling with kind. I left my identification card on the table, and she brought me the books by Hakumi Murakami that I had been reading for weeks.
"It's fortunate that you prefer physical books," Tatiana said. "With the advancement of artificial intelligence, I wouldn't be surprised if in a couple of years, everyone forgets the pleasure of reading an old book."
"Not to mention" I said, smiling. Tatiana looked at me perplexed, captivated. She was used to men and women looking at me in that way. I picked up my books and walked, holding them with both arms and against my chest. I sat at one of the tables in front of a huge bookshelf and searched for the page where I had left off my reading last time.
Shortly before sunset, I began to feel Yryhnna's disturbing thoughts.
"Come back soon, dad will be worried, you know he doesn't like you being there."
I tried to continue reading but it was impossible. I sighed and rolled my eyes. I closed the book on page 253 and delicately picked it up to return it. Tatiana was absorbed in her phone and music was playing from the player. I heard a song that I recognized, the band playing was called "My Chemical Romance," the song was "I don't love you," a classic.
Tatiana looked up and our eyes met. She held her breath briefly and handed me my ID and books.
"Hey Tatiana, I was wondering about artificial intelligence."
"Do you want some apps for reading online with audiobooks?"
"No, actually I was wondering if you know of any place or company in the city that works with robots," I asked, my eyes fixed on her. Her face was beautiful and natural, but I suspected she was unaware of her beauty, as was the case with most human women. I shrugged when I saw a flash of resentment in her gaze. At that moment, she too was observing my face.
"Where I work, the city is full of artificial intelligence. I think I'll lose my job next month because the owners want to install a new voice system to speed up the book search."
"I see," I said, regretful. "So you can't think of any place?"
"Perhaps at Mykon Enterprises, where they develop robot software. There's a feast of artificial intelligence there."
"Yes, of course," I inquired, slightly disappointed. Tatiana seemed to read my mind when she added, "Do you want me to look up the address on the GPS? That way you can just take a taxi to that location."
"Oh, that would be great," I affirmed with a smile. I took my cellphone out of my bag, the latest model iPhone, and handed it to Tatiana. She knew that I wasn't very familiar with technology, although she didn't know it was because I was a mythical creature and my species had been undergoing transformation and development deep in the ocean for years. Tatiana enjoyed helping and it pleased her to be good at something I wasn't, it made her feel somehow superior to my mermaid beauty.
"Here you go," she handed me the cellphone.
"Thank you, Tatiana."
"Come back soon, gorgeous."
I left the library and looked at the sun, it was beginning to descend towards the horizon, it was time to go home. Tomorrow, first thing in the morning, I would go to the Artificial Intelligence development company. I didn't quite understand why, but I had to see that guy again. His way of looking at me that night, and the passion I felt imagining him making love to a woman, made me want him for myself. I wanted him for myself, I knew perfectly well the danger it represented for mermaids to mix with human men, as they easily brought out our animal instincts, but I couldn't help it, I wanted to see him again.
The sun sets completely when I arrive at the beach. I hurry to swim towards the reef and I dive into the sea from a boardwalk that borders the beach, instantly submerging and swimming towards the depths, and I swim towards the guards who allow me access. I swim to the house and Seila is lying on the bed in my room.
"Where have you been?"
"I was at the human spa, and I went out to buy some gemstone bras" I lie.
Your face has the glow of the sun's rays, and you don't smell of floral fragrances or fresh mint, like your hair usually smells when you come back from the spa. Mía, tell me the truth - Her eyes track me, she turns over and lies face down on my bed. She has a beautiful turquoise eyeliner that enhances her gaze.
"Fine" I sigh "I was at the bookstore with the humans." Her eyes narrow and she clenches her lips, ready to hear her sister argue. But she looks at her without expression for a moment.
"Next time, I want to go with you" She tells me. I look at her confused, I don't understand what she means.
Do you want to come to the surface to accompany me? It's not necessary, the guards do a great job and I always come back at sunset.
"No, I mean I want to go to the city with you, as a human."
"I want to see Mathias again."
The next morning I woke up very early and Seila was in the kitchen preparing breakfast.
"Good morning sleepyhead" she says cheerfully and lets out a slight laugh. I smile sweetly. She puts a plate of jam salad on the table.
"Good morning, what time did you wake up?" I ask in surprise.
"I could barely sleep all night, I'm very nervous. " I look at her with compassion. I know what she means, I've been dreaming about humans every night for weeks.
We went up to the surface, Seila looks especially beautiful that morning, her loose brown hair gives off an intense and magnetic aroma like vanilla. That morning the guards were surprised to see my sister and they allowed us access.
It didn't take us long to reach the company marked on my GPS. Seila, excited to use her human money, as she usually doesn't need to use it, paid for a taxi that dropped us off in front of the artificial intelligence company. As soon as we got out of the taxi, I knew that was the place, I could feel messages from the spiritual realm assuring me that I would find a great adventure that I needed to experience there. We entered the ground floor of the company. Seila charmed the receptionist into giving her all the information she needed.
"Good morning Miss. I wonder if you could tell me Mr. Mathias' office number…"
"Sei… there they are " I whispered, both of us looked up and met the gaze of two incredibly handsome men who were staring at us. One of them, Edgar the handsome blonde guy who loos lie a supermodel, next to him, Seila´s superhero Mathias. I felt a deep pain in my stomach, the scientist guy was not there.
We returned home that night, almost celebrating our clandestine and dangerous escape, just before sunset. We had broken at least 20 rules, and Seila and Mathias had even had lunch together when he invited her. I excused myself, giving them more privacy, and waited for her at the company's restaurant, located in the lobby. The surprising thing was that even though Mathias didn't remember anything specific about Seila, he treated her as if he already knew her. I wasn't as lucky, as I never saw the bald man and sweet hazel eyes, I had seen on the beach again, and I didn't know anything about him, not even his name, I only know he worked with robots, aparently Mathias too. But something inside my heart, a voice from another plane, told me that I would soon have him close to me again. "I already know everything," Yryhnna said, swimming towards Seila as she happily prepared to comb her hair. Seila was sitting on the couch in our luxurious living room, surrounded by magazines and pictures
I know He told me He doesn't want to see me ever again. We probably we never talk in this life. Because He said "Not Mia, we are never going to see us". But there is something inside my heart weaping and begging me to see him before He leaves. I knew that we both had decided to come to the surface by our own choice, we were both adults and the more liberal and Dionysian part of me just wanted to dance and have fun, to see the man who starred in my dreams since the first night I met him. And just for the fact of capturing us in a net, they deserved death, as it was a completely disrespectful action to treat a mermaid. A group of boys played a fun game on the beach, hitting a ball with a racket in their hands. Although we didn't live in the human world, we were well aware of all its secrets; mermaids could visit the surface and even walk among people whenever we wanted, allowing us to easily understand their culture and norms. I noticed that the teams were unbalanced, with two boys playing against three. The team with more players consisted of one girl and two men, while the opposing team consisted of two men. They were all young, and there was another boy sitting on the side of the net, watching them play. He hugged his knees with one arm and rested his chin on his hand, observing the tennis match with a concentration similar like if He was studying a game of chess. I looked at that boy and noticed his strong, hairy forearms, his hazel brown eyes were concentrated. I turned towards the bar, where a crowd made it difficult to access. Yryhnna grabbed my arm, letting out a laugh. "Let's follow Seila
The people start screaming, and in that moment, I run between the tables towards where my sister was. My jaw drops and my nails grow into sharp claws, two sharp fangs sprout from my teeth, and I sink them into the arm of the werewolf attacking my sister, screaming with strength. In that moment, his arm throws me to the other side and launches me into the air. I land on a couple of tables a few meters away and feel a deep pain in my hips. I watch as other men transform into beasts, leaving their human forms behind. Some of them tear apart and dismember people as they run and advance among them. A hand pushes me on the shoulder and helps me to stand up. My sister, Seila, extends her hand to me, I grab it and run behind her. "Follow me! Quickly!" we run between the tables of the restaurant and head towards the bar. My face, which had transformed into that of a mermaid ready to attack, regains its normal features. I watch in amazement as Yryhnna, transformed into a furious mermaid, sink
