“What do you mean you broke up? You guys were so in love, I am sure you guys still are.” I forced him to release me and look at me, but the sobs that were reverberating through his body did not let him raise his head to me.
“I am so sorry, Hazel. But…I just can’t stand being with her when she hates you so much. She said things about you, said things about me and you…it would be bad of me to just leave you because I want to be with her. We go back way longer.”
This can’t be happening. The exact thing that Alpha Austin had warned me about was coming true and I couldn’t even do anything about it.
“No. I don’t mind Simon. It doesn’t really matter. Do what makes you happy.”
He shook his head. “No. We go too far back for me to leave you just like that.” He sniffed, then wiped his eyes with the back of his sleeve. “I will go up and be by myself for some time, okay? Is that alright?”
I nodded and he walked away, to his tiny basement room. That was the sort of room most of us omegas had, and since he was alone in his room, it was considered a major flex.
I wrapped up my cooking and served, before leaving to go back to my room. I had been yearning to be alone ever since Simon had broken the news to me. I just wondered what that made me now. A relationship wrecker? A bad friend? Or someone who was in deep, deep trouble?
I sat on my bed, just as the door opened and closed again.
“Are you going for the mating ceremony? They say Alpha Austin will find his mate today.”
I looked up to Eve, who had her chestnut brown hair tied up into a rough bun with more than a few strands escaping to frame her face. Her hands were on her waist, and she was looking at me quizzically.
“I am an omega. I don’t have a choice.”
“Will you be okay? He is going to get even farther.”
“He was never within reach anyway.”
“But you could at least want him.”
“Doesn’t mean it let me be happy, or at peace with myself. Wanting him simply wrecked my soul and maybe it’s better for my soul, my wolf and my heart to realize he can’t be mine.”
She sat next to me and pulled me into an embrace, urging me to keep my head on her shoulder. “You are so mature.”
“That’s the only option I have.”
She patted my back lightly, as I tried to stifle the tears that threatened to flow. In some hours, he would no longer be free to covet.
I carried my small sling bag, the only one I had which had practically blown up Simon’s lifelong savings when he got it for my birthday. I still kept it and it looked like knew, so I decided to wear it with the only dress I had. Knee length and dark pink with slim hands. I wore my worn out sneakers, and combed my black hair to each side of my shoulder.
“You look ready to kill.” Eve said, nudging me.
I only smiled at her as she hooked her arm around mine and we got ready to leave.
The mating ceremony was a bigger affair that even the thanksgiving, and I was happy I was not on call that day. I could see the omegas that were on call working their asses off.
I made my way with Eve hanging around me, probably to make sure I wasn’t going to break down, towards the first line from where omegas were allowed to stand. From there, I could see Austin, and right beside him, was Katherine. His now ex – girlfriend. Lily was on the other side, and then the grand alpha on the side of Katherine. She looked like the daughter in-law everyone approved of.
“Hey, didn’t know you were coming.” Simon said as he tapped me from behind.
I shrugged. “I just wanted to come see.”
“You look good. Is it for someone?”
I laughed it off and we both turned to watch the performances. Suddenly, I saw when someone came over and bent next to Alpha Austin, whispering something on his ear. He looked shocked for a second, then excused himself.
“I kinda don’t want to stay,” Simon started to say, before I felt someone tug at my bag.
“Fancy seeing you here, Hazel. I thought both of you would prefer somewhere….quieter.” Lily said, giving me a fake smile.
“Lily, we are really not…”
“Whatever.” She said simply and turned away.
Simon sighed. “I’ll talk to her.”
I tried to stop him, but he left, taking the path in the direction where she had left to.
I turned back to the ceremony, although I was now distracted. I and Simon have only ever been friends with nothing other than that between us. I wondered what it meant for me now that Lily thought that way of us, especially with alpha Austin’s warning.
“Excuse me.” I turned around. The face was unfamiliar, and I thought it was just one of those who wanted to hit on girls.
“Yes, how can I help you?” I asked, trying to sound polite, but not friendly enough to encourage any advances.
“Are you Hazel? The omega?”
I nodded. The fact that he was being specific probably meant he was not just being random.
“Yes, I am.”
“Please follow me. Alpha Austin would like to see you.”
“What?” I asked, my heart immediately picking up pace. Alpha Austin wanted to see me, Omega Hazel? How could that be?
He only made a motion with his hand that said I should follow him, and I nodded, trying to push away my wandering thoughts.
We walked for a while, till we got to a small clearing far away from the ceremony. Alpha Austin’s back was turned to me, and Lily was standing there too.
“Hazel.” Alpha Austin said and turned to me. “Give me back the Alpha’s seal that is wrongfully in your possession.”
“I don’t understand.” I said, taking an instinctive step back. Alpha Austin turned to me and clasped his hands behind him, his hair falling in waves to his shoulder. I was finding it hard to concentrate on both him and the impending doom I sensed coming, and I felt torn between just basking in his allure or trying to defend myself. He took a step closer to me. “You have the Alpha’s seal. It is in your possession.”I saw Lily’s lips curve up in a smile.“I do not have any such thing. I just…I don’t even know what the alpha’s seal looks like.”He laughed heartily. “Lily, father will miss us at the ceremony. You can go back”I watched as Lily came to front of me, then smiled and then deliberately hit my shoulder as she walked away.Alpha Austin tied up his hair in man bun, then titled his head to the side as her footsteps faded away. We were now alone, and it was even more terrifying.“Are you saying you don’t have the alpha’s seal?”“I really don’t, alpha. I don’t even know it.” I said,
I swallowed as the crowd started to cheer. Alpha Austin has found his mate, but she is over there. Not me. The woman he is holding.“The Alpha has found his mate, seer. Bless them.”The seer nodded. She was a blind old woman who always kept her eyes closed, but whenever she opened them, they have the moon reflected in them.I watched as she wake up to us, a small smile on her face. She held the water in her hands and it shook slightly from the slight tremble of her body, but it did not fall.“May the moon Goddess…”“Excuse me.” I turned and Catherine was looking at me like she was about to kill me.“This is all a sham. I am the alpha’s mate. I am the only one with the alpha’s scent.”The seer stopped what she was doing and turned to her.My heart was beating wildly in my chest, my body trembling. The seer would know if I was his mate. And I will take the fall alone. It would be even worse if that was to happen.I looked at Alpha Austin who had a small smug smirk on his face.“Oh. Cath
"Alpha?" I said as I walked behind him to the very spot where I had seen him get his heart broken brutally. Where all of this had started. He turned to me. "Yes?" His hair had somehow fallen in front of his eyes, shielding half of his face from view. "Well...the grand alpha said to come be with you. To get to know you..." He nodded. "Give it up." "Give what up?" I asked, confusion in my voice. "Give up trying to know me. I know you are in love with that omega, Simon. I am sure you know who I am in love with too. So It's best we just keep this act at the surface." He was brutal as he turned away to face the full moon. "I am not..." I stopped. Did it even matter? I did know who he was in love with. "Up until when? Up until when am I going to fill the shoes of your mate?" "Till forever." He answered simply. "What if my mate comes?" I saw his fingers that had been scraping along his palm stop, as he slowly turned to me. His eyes were dark, and when he spoke, his voice was just
Alpha Austin immediately released me, then turned away leaving my back feeling cold and empty. It was weird how used to his warmth I got in a mtter of minutes, and how much I craved to have him back. Hell, I needed him back. But I was just the chanced Luna. The Omega who is going To depend on a man who isn't even hers for her title in the pack."Al...""You can go now." He said, cutting me off.I nodded meekly and left, the same way Catherine did. She had this effect on him that I wish I had, this hold on the reins of his neart that I would go to the ends of the world in order to get. But it wasn't happening, and I knew.I walked back slowly to the now dispersed gathering. Simon and Eve were still there, probably waiting for me, and Eve ran to me the minute she saw me. Simon followed, but much slower."How was it?""It was perfect." I answered with a small smile."You are one lucky omega, you know that? Alpha Austin dumped that stuck up she-wolf Catherine for you. It sure is a love me
"You know you don't want her, alpha. You are taking her from everyone else because you know you can. Because you know she is only a lowly omega who will go with you wherever you ask her to go." Simon pulled me closer to him, and Alpha Austin nodded. He slowly let go of my hand, a small smile on his face. "How about I show you just how true that is?" He stepped away from me, the same smile still on his face."I won't let her go with you."Alpha Austin laughed, then looked at me. "I will wait for you at home." He said simply and turned away. When he had said I was the one he wanted, I had dared to let my crazy heart flutter. There was no mate bond between us, so what would I count on to bring him back to me? Nothing at all.Knowinh that, I slowly released myself from simon's grip. I had nothing to bank on, and now, with just one taste, his lips on my neck, his hands on my waist, I am like some stupid she wolf on drugs. "You want to prove him right? You want to leave and run to him like
"Catherine." It was the first word I saw when I opened my eyes. Austin had his back to me and just a little lower than his shoulder was the name in a beautiful cursive. My breath hitched in my throat as I sat up on the bed. I didnt know if he was asleep, and I didn't even know where to go to. Should I go back to the pack house?I am sure the grand alpha and Lily would be around this morning. And the countless omegas that worked in the house too.But I couldn't stay here and watch his tattooed back like this. I sat there, lost and my palms covering my face. I suddenly heard himmove, and I lifted my head up."You're awake." He said to me."Just a minute ago." He stood up from the bed, and grabbed his shirt. I had been the one to remove it last night, but after that..."Alpha...last night...""You called me Austin last night, I am sure."I swallowed. "Yes. Austin...last night...""You made a promise you are not sure you are going to be able to keep."I lifted my eyes to him. "I guess I
Catherine swallowed, pursing her lips. I could see her jaw flexing, her hand clenched under her sleeve."Austin," She said. It was an obvious last attempt. "Austin, look at me."I turned to Austin, but he didn't look up at all."Austin, please. It's me, Catherine. Look at me."I felt my heart skip a beat as he turned ever so slowly. He lifted his eyes to hers, and raised a brow."This is what you wanted to see?" He asked her, then stood up. "Now that you have, can you leave?""Austin. You don't...you can't just stop loving me like that. You know it. When you look at her, it's me you want to see and you know it.""For goodness sake. We are going in circles here. Forget about what we used to share. Forget about everything and just get out, Catherine." His deep voice was steely with anger, and she gave me one last glare, then turned away and left.Austin stood there for a few seconds, and with a harsh curse under his breath, he walked away."You really love him, right?" The grand alpha a
My eyes bulged at him. "Kill...kill him? Why..why would I do that?"Liam shrugged. "I thought you were going to be luna?"The way he said it made me realize that it wasn't just enough to be the alpha's mate, or at least, his chosen one, I had to prove myself too. Probably in ways I have never imagined."You should go to the store now," Austin suddenly said from behimd me. "Wear something sexy."I turned to him, then walked closer as Liam walked away in the opposite direction. "What is this about killing someone?""Don't you know about the series of omega killings? Don't you know about my uncle? Don't you know about all our soldiers that are still being held captive?" He was looking at me incredulously, like he couldn't believe I was unaware."I do, but...why does it have to be me?"He didn't answer, but pulled his shirt upwards to reveal a long jagged acar. "Because I tried. And now I know his weakness."Women. It was clear."So I just..." I pulled the syringe towards me, showing how I
Austin's P.O.V.I took the remaining steps towards the large burial ground, the single rose I had plucked from my recent gardening hobby dangling from my fingers. I hated the amount of time it has taken me to come here, but at least I am making my way to her now, and I hope I let myself get to the very end.The grave was still new, and I found myself slowly kneeling toward it, and I dropped the single flower I'd brought. It will wilter and dry up, unlike my love for her. Unlike this undying love I still feel after so long. The headstone had only three letters written in cursive. "I love you."Nothing more. Because I had no words at all to say to her. In front of her, I am a sinner, and I will probably always be. I have no chance for forgiveness with her. She left, long ago, and in her wake a gaping hole.I let out a long sigh. If Hazel were here, she would have said I am a little too young to sigh like that. I smiled, shaking my head a little.I touched the grave again, my fingers sl
9 MONTHS LATERHow long can nine full months be? Probably a little too short when you are anticipating to die. But even shorter with a husband who dotes on you like Austin does.Austin received the congrats half heartedly, and brought in some of thbest healers across different packs to wait on me. Sometimes, I felt a little too protected, but I knew he just wanted to keep me safe.Everyday as I watched my pregnancy grow bigger, I felt the fear surge higher. How would things be for them after I die? Would Austin be able to look past my sacrifice and love the children because they belong to him? It sometimes made me wonder, but I also, learned to push it behind me.Sometimes, I caught him just spaced out a little, and sometimes after I slept, he would hold my hand and end up sleeping on a chair. He didn't seem to mind any of it at all, and didn't show me how worried he was also. For that, I was utterly grateful, more than he knew.I stood in front of the open door, watching the sunset.
The hall looked nothing like the unfinished one that Austin had shown me just yesterday, and I knew there was definitely no way it could have been done without having to pull all nighters.Dark red and black roses adorned a cleared path, and petals filled the floor I was supposed to walk on. Most of the pack were there, and in the front I could see Catherine, tears glistening brightly in her eyes, yet a small smile on her face.I smiled back at her as Austin slowly accompanied me, the train of my dress behind held up by an omega, and the scroll of the Luna's oath waiting on an elevated stand on which Austin would leave me to go to.He gave me a small reassuring smile as he left my side and then made his way to the stand, a happy smile playing on his lips. The standing ovation that had welcomed us was still ongoing, and Austin let it go on for a few more seconds, before he finally raised a hand and firmly clenched his fist. It immediately died down and he lowered his hand."It is an ho
We practiced a lot more, my feet slowly getting accustomed to the introductory steps of the dance while only barely escaping making mistakes towards the middle. I never did get too deep, as Austin just told me to focus on the beginning, and he will ensure we don't make a disaster at the end."Just go with my flow, okay?" he said to me and I ordered, allowing him to lead. It was rather convenient, and I found it easier. We retired to bed after a tired dinner, his hand clasped around my waist, drawing me into him, while his other hand stretched under my head to support it. Before I knew it, I was asleep, his slow, even breaths serving to lure me even deeper.I turned on to my back as the bright sunlight assaulted my eyes, then pulled a pillow over my head to shut it out completely. I didn't even care that Austin wasn't in bed, I just know I needed this sleep. "No, not that. I will inspect it myself in the next thirty minutes, so just move on to other things. Spotlight? Well, Hazel isn
I woke up with a start, feeling the empty bed around me. I had realized Austin wasn't anywhere near me when I stirred and for some reason it just scared the shit out of me. Maybe because things have been going a little too well and I am scared of anything jeopardizing it, or maybe I was having having bad dream."Hey. You are going to get a headache doing that." Austin said, walking over to where I sat. He held me in his arm, and scanned my face."You are here.""Of course, I was just on the phone with the gamma, I did not want to wake you up. Sorry if that startled you."I disentangled myself from him, leaned away and smiled, feeling my fears immediately drown. "No, I am fine. Maybe I was having a bad dream."He nodded. "I'm sorry."I smiled at him and leaned back on the bead headrest. "You know, I just realized...I never really asked what my duties as luna are."The slight furrow in his brows cleared off and he smiled. "Always so thoughtful. I believe during the crowning, you will ge
"This or this?" I asked Austin as we went over the dresses that were brought for the luna ceremony. He had commenced preparations immediately after, telling me how we needed to plan the world's best Luna ceremony in three days. The omegas waiting on me seemed to have an opinion, even as Austin thinned his eyes at the dresses."Why do you keep picking purple dresses? I think you look good in red." He said, his eyes slowly moving towards the red dress I have left on the bed."It's your favorite, Austin."He rolled his eyes and walked to me, then picked out the red dress. It was designed to hug my body from above, and then spread out into the tulles filled with satin towards the end.He put it in front of me, and then nodded. "I believe this will look good when you wear it.""Fine. I will try it on."He nodded and collected the other dresses, then gestured for the omega to leave. He turned away and closed his eyes as I wore the dress."I can't zip, Austin." I called out to him and he gav
I stirred a little and turned to the other side, and my eyes fell on Austin. He was sitting facing me, his elbow propped half on the headrest, his eyes fixed on me. My eyes slowly widened as I straightened."Are we here already?" I asked, my voice sleepy. He slowly nodded. "Yes.""You should have woken me up. You must have been tired from driving all day." I squinted my eyes at him. The sun was setting behind him, the sheen causing his hair to turn a golden brown, and make his red eyes a little lighter than they actually are.He smiled and extended his hand to me. "I thought you looked too pretty that way. I wouldn't mind waiting for you."I smiled, and he let go of my hand, then got out of the car. He went around to my seat and opened my door for me, and waited till I got out."Go on. I will bring in our stuff."I nodded and went in, my arms stretching on their own. My neck felt a little stiff, and once I made my way into the house, I found a couch to rest and I just went on it.When
I felt the entire world come to a stand still as the healer's words hit me again and again, like an ambush of arrows."Me...or the baby?" I asked, a little in a daze. It felt like I was in some faraway place, watching the girl who looked exactly like me sitting in front of the healer.I slowly turned to Austin whose eyes were wide and reddened. Unlike me, he seemed to clearly understand what the healer had said, and seemed to be trying to accept it too."What do you mean?" I asked, feeling hot tears sting the back of my eyes. I blinked rapidly, but it only made them rush down faster, and I felt the warmth on my cheeks."One of you will make it out of labor. It can't be both of you.""Is there no other way? Is there nothing? An offering? A sacrifice? A prayer?"I swallowed on hearing Austin's voice. He sounded just as broken as I was, and my chest filled up."None. That is what's written."Austin gave a slight pause. "What if she doesn't give birth?"I turned to him, my eyes wide. "No
I held Austin's arm tight as she took a step closer to me, and her eyes slowly drifted across to Austin. I turned instinctively to him, but his face was set in expressionless too, his hand holding my waist to keep me on my feet. Seeing him so determined gave me a big of confidence and I swallowed as I turned back to the healer."So she is the one. The substitute I have heard of.""Just check her, healer. Her status does not affect anything." Austin said, his voice cold. She flickered her eyes to him, then back at me. "All of that is good and all, but...do you not realize how powerful a mate bond is? How can an entire pack be so nonchalant towards a mate bond, especially that of the alpha? What were you thinking?"My breath hitched as her eyes thinned in a little judgemental look. I could tell she didn't have good news for us. My eyes lifted to Alpha Evander behind us. He looked a little disgusted too, like he absolutely didn't understand how Austin could disregard a mate bond to be wi
