Fate Mates were an extremely rare phenomena. Typically, two werewolves fell in love and then decided to declare themselves mates, either through marriage or another means. But the love bond of a Fate Mate gives the werewolves no choice in the matter. I’d heard it described in stories and fairytales. When you find your fate mate, and you look at the person for the first time, the entire world stops. The one thing that keeps you alive is that person. And separation from that person would mean losing a part of yourself.

Apparently, after a few months of blissful love, something went terribly wrong with Alpha Sergio’s mate. Nobody outside of the Black River Pack knew exactly what happened, but the young woman died.

Every pack felt the impact of her death, but none of us could begin to imagine the despair that Alpha Sergio felt. I’d heard stories that he went away for months, secluding himself from the rest of his pack. A girl in my graduating class claimed that the Alpha tried to kill himself multiple times, but his body had healed too quickly.

Eventually, after months of being in the dark, Alpha Sergio emerged again. And his pack became a menace—a force to be reckoned with.

In an effort to retreat from the dark, gloomy topic of death, I wandered away from the table of elders. But I couldn’t shake the chills that coursed down my back at the thought of the Black River Pack. They’d become legendary across our continent for their brutality, and the idea that I now shared a ballroom with some of them had my heartbeat racing. And not in a good way!

Utterly entranced in my own thoughts, I didn’t realize that my absent-minded feet drifted toward a crowd of Black River warriors. I blinked, taken aback by how far I’d traveled in the crowds, and instantly took a step backwards to retreat.

But my breath was nearly knocked out of my lungs when my back struck a hard wall. No, not a wall. A man. I quickly turned around to apologize to the werewolf from the Broken Valley Pack, but in the process, ran in to another body behind me. Moon Goddess above! I mentally cursed myself, and hurriedly went to apologize to both men.

“I’m so sor-…” I trailed off as soon as I turned around to apologize to the second man. An immediate chill swept across my body, and my blood turned to ice as I realized who I had disrupted.

Alpha Sergio of the Black River Pack. Waves of power coursed off of the male’s massive body as he turned around to face me. My insides flipped in one hundred different directions, and I silently backed away from his towering figure. I didn’t want to be too close to him when he realized that I, a petty first-year werewolf, had disrupted him.

The further I moved from him, the more of his body came into my view. And I couldn’t resist the urge to sweep my gaze from his feet to his face. His legs were long and powerful, standing wide to accentuate the size of him. Next, I raced to study his lean torso and broad chest, covered by a nice shirt and jacket. The fabric did nothing to hide the curves and crevice of every muscle that adorned his chest and abdomen, all the way toward his boulder-sized shoulders. Finally, I reached his face.

His piercing blue eyes locked onto my hazel orbs, and, in an instant, a great power swept almost knocked me to my knees. The world stopped and so did my heart, as adrenaline coursed through my veins. What is happening? I managed to think, because I didn’t think I could form any words at the moment. I could scarcely remember to inhale and exhale!

A few people from nearby stopped to look at us, but they had no idea what happened. I didn’t know either!

Alpha Sergio’s gaze intensified, and he took a staggering step toward me. I could physically feel the distance between us closing, like a piece of elastic that relaxed after being stretched for far too long. I felt drawn to this male, and it terrified me! I wanted to run but couldn’t imagine ripping my eyes from his.

When he finally closed the entire distance between us, he grabbed both of my arms, as if unable to fight the primal need to connect. The moment that our bodies touched, I felt a new type of warmth seep into me like melting honey. It filled me to the brim, and I felt the sense of satisfaction even in my toes.

He inhaled, moving his head closer to my skin and hair as he took in my scent. I was too scared to move or pull away from him, and frankly, I did not want to. After a few seconds, he pulled away and stared at me with still slightly shocked eyes, but now, possession filled his gaze as he ran his gaze down my body in a way that had to mean one thing.

Mine.

I was awakened from my dreamlike state by the sound of people around us murmuring and whispering things. I tore my gaze away from Alpha Sergio, which proved to be much harder than I had suspected, and suddenly, reality hit me.

It seemed to hit Alpha Sergio at the same moment too, because the second our eyes were ripped from each other’s he almost pushed me away from him. He looked down at himself, as if making sure that he was still there, and then back to me, clearly as confused as I felt. But there was something else in his eyes that made me uneasy. His piercing blue eyes were clouded with a hungry anger.

Suddenly, somebody pushed their way to the front of the crowd, which was now surrounding Sergio and me. My father, the beta of the Dandelion Prime Pack, emerged followed by a few other high-ranking officials from other packs.

My father’s bewildered and somewhat horrified face made me want to melt into the ground, “What has happened, Iris?” He kept his burning gaze on me.

I tried to appear strong and opened my mouth to speak but no words came out. Amidst my struggling, I could sense Alpha Sergio inch closer to me again, but he offered no help.

What could I say? That Alpha Sergio and I were fate mates? I shook my head slightly- it could not be. My thoughts kept going back to his deceased previous mate and how there was no way he could have gotten over her that quickly. But he does not have a choice.

I woke up to the sun creeping in from the window, extending across the bed and warming me up after a cold night’s sleep.I groggily opened my eyes and looked around, and, at first, a feeling of panic arose inside of me as I took in my new surroundings, but then the previous night’s events caught up to me and I calmed down. The room was large, with an off-white theme and black furniture. The bed I was lying on was huge and nicely decorated, with great pillows and blankets surrounding me like one great cushion.Glancing across the room, I saw a girl with long, brown curly hair watching me intently, a small smile on her face as I woke up, “Great! You are awake… I will go tell Sergio.”I must have looked confused because she laughed slightly, “I am Sophia, Alpha Sergio’s little sister and greatest advisor.”I nodded slightly, “Er

“Iris,” his husky voice made me blush slightly, since no one really called me Iris other than my dad. I opened my mouth to tell him to just call me Ris, but my throat caught and I quickly closed it once again. He gave me a hard look when I said nothing, his intimidating gaze sweeping down my body as if he was inspecting me. “How old are you?” He asked in a cold voice, his tone surprising me. “I’m eighteen…” I said quietly, unsure of how he would react to my youth. Sergio’s eyes hardened slightly when I spoke, and I was unsure if it was because of my reply, or just my voice. He looked almost ashamed of himself and I couldn’t help from wonder his age. To me, he looked like he was in his twenties, but looks could deceive. Sergio took a few steps closer to me, and I could feel the space between us closing, making my heart skip rapidly. But before the distance between us clos

“Um no… well, not at will,” I restated, trying to make myself sound less pathetic. “It sort of happens randomly. Less and less as I’ve gotten older.”Sophia laughed, but there was nothing malicious in the sound. “That’s insane! Does Sergio know?”I grimaced. “I doubt it. And I’d like to keep it that way. Don’t want to give him another reason to hate me.” I tried to act like it was no big deal, and Sophia seemed taken by my façade. She shrugged. “To be honest, I think he is scared of you. He thinks that there is something wrong with him because he found another mate right after his last one died.” Before I could say anything else about the subject, she smiled. “You want me to help you pack for your trip tonight?”“I don’t have anything to pack.” I failed to hide

I then realized that tears were streaming down my face rapidly as I gasped for air, “They j-jumped in front of the c-car and…” I tried to explain what happened, but I couldn’t get the words out as I shook from my sobbing.“Shhh,” he hushed me in a soft voice, one I had not heard from him before, “Let’s get you out of here.”“It’s my seatbelt. It’s stuck,” I began to blunder with the restraint again, but he reached inside the car and placed a hand on mine.“That’s okay,” he murmured, “Place your hands on the roof and brace yourself.”I did as I was told, and he reached across me, his arm wrapping around my waist as he unfastened the seatbelt with ease. Momentarily, I was suspended in the air, and then, in one fluid motion, he caught me with one arm and lifted me out of the car with ease.

The accident had not phased Sergio’s plans of leaving that night to discover whether or not we should be mates.Trudy did a few more tests on me before patting my leg and taking off her gloves, “There you go, dear. “What were you doing walking alone at night?” He took a step closer to me and folded his arms across his broad chest.“Why does it matter?” I muttered in disgust, trying to act like I could not stand his possessive questions.“Oh, I don’t know. Maybe because we are at war with a superior species of hybrids that roam the woods at night.” His snarled and took another step closer to me, so that we were only a few feet apart.“You can’t even shift. You would never be able to put up a fight against anything!” I knew he was losing his tempter, and fast.Suddenly, an idea came to me. “Well then teach me to fight.”He glanced at me, as if wondering if I was serious.“Teach me to fight against one of them. A loud clunk against my window woke me from my restless slumber. I jolted upright and shuffled toward the window so that I could see what was going on.“You woke her up, dummy!” A girl who looked about ten years old yelled at her young companion, a boy with dark waves of hair, from below my window. The little boy was chasing after his foam football, which was most likely what hit my window and caused the disturbance. At least my window did not kill a bird, I thought to myselfI smiled at the two children before stepping away from the window to let them continue with their games, but a familiar voice made me peek back down at them. Sergio had walked out of the house and was now talking to the two youngsters, although I could not decipher what they were saying. All I could focus on was the way his dark hair seemed to reflect the sun beams and the movement of his muscles beneath his tight-fitting shirt. Suddenly

Sophia glanced at me slightly before biting her lip and looking away.“Like who?” apparently, it was a dumb question, because Christina slammed her silverware against her plate, causing the glass to shatter.Christina glared at me, “Sarah. Alpha’s true mate. And don’t flatter yourself, because you are nothing like her. You are never going to be her, so don’t even try.”She turned to the boy who was sitting next to her, “And you, John, how dare you compare this worthless transfer to my sister.&rdq

He already seemed to think that I was to blame for all of this.“And why were you dancing with him anyways?” He finally glanced at me with his piercing blue eyes.“I could ask you the same question about that blonde that was clinging to you!” I shouted, finally having had enough of his accusations. To my surprise, Sergio smirked slightly as he sped down the windin

“We are stopping here,” Sergio told me as he pulled in to a parking lot for a large bar in what seemed like the middle of nowhere.I was still exhausted from the night before, so I had been trying to sleep on the way back to the pack house. Sergio and I had hardly spoken all morning, so it was not hard to drift away. I was actually becoming quite comfortable in the silence.“Why?” I groaned slightly as I looked out of the window at the bustling saloon. It was only six o’clock yet people were spilling out of its doors.“I need to do something. It will only take an hour,” he assured me as he slid out of the car with ease and began to walk to the door.I stepped out of the car, happy to finally stretch my legs once more, and speed-walked over to Sergio so that I could walk in with him.To my surprise, when we reached the entrance, Sergio hel

His features were hardened and he looked enraged at my words and disrespect, but there was also a wave of hurt that showed briefly in his eyes. Before I could get far from him, an exotic man stepped out of his room.
