I woke up to the sun creeping in from the window, extending across the bed and warming me up after a cold night’s sleep.
I groggily opened my eyes and looked around, and, at first, a feeling of panic arose inside of me as I took in my new surroundings, but then the previous night’s events caught up to me and I calmed down.
The room was large, with an off-white theme and black furniture. The bed I was lying on was huge and nicely decorated, with great pillows and blankets surrounding me like one great cushion.
Glancing across the room, I saw a girl with long, brown curly hair watching me intently, a small smile on her face as I woke up, “Great! You are awake… I will go tell Sergio.”
I must have looked confused because she laughed slightly, “I am Sophia, Alpha Sergio’s little sister and greatest advisor.”
I nodded slightly, “Er, I’m Iris. It’s nice to meet you…” I cringed at my awkwardness, but Sophia did not seem to notice since she stood up and walked over to the door.
Before she walked out, she turned to me, “Oh, and there are some clothes in the bathroom that should be your size. I want them back though.” She laughed at the last part before leaving me alone in the room.
After she was gone, I slowly crawled out of bed, my feet hitting the cold floor and the icy air giving me a rude awakening. I could only hope that the clothes Sophia gave me were more substantial than the small dress I was wearing at the moment.
When I reached the bathroom, I looked in the mirror, horrified at the way I looked. My dark brown hair had fallen out and was lying in matted curls around my head while my makeup was smeared across my face.
I immediately turned on the shower, which began to steam up the bathroom in a matter of seconds while I stripped down. Once my dress was off, I was vaguely aware of dark marks across my arms, and I bit my lip when I realized that Sergio had inflicted those marks on my arm last night.
I shook off the feeling of fear that crept into my stomach and stepped in to the shower, letting the warm water rejuvenate my skin. I stayed in the shower for longer than I should have while I washed my hair and skin.
When I was out, I dried off quickly and grabbed the clothes Sophia had laid out for me. I grabbed the black tank-top and slipped it on over my bra after pulling up the tight, dark jeans as well. There was a light jacket to the side that I wore, just to keep me warm in this cool environment.
Sophia was waiting in the same chair she had been in before for me to emerge from the bathroom. When I walked out she stood up, an approving look in her eyes, “Black River looks good on you… And, as much as this pains me to say, you look better in those pants than I do.”
I laughed slightly; glad to know that Sophia seemed friendly enough.
Before I could say anything, she continued, “I talked to Sergio and he said you could go downstairs to his office. He may not be out of his meeting yet though, so you can wait outside.”
I nodded, “Where’s his office?” I tried to hide the shake from my voice as I thought about seeing him again.
“I will take you to it,” she laughed slightly; “I am not allowed to leave your side anyways, Alpha’s orders.”
I looked at her with wide eyes, slightly dismayed by what she said, “Um, what?” I tried to let out a laugh, “I don’t need a babysitter.” Especially a babysitter who was probably younger than I was. Sophia looked almost sixteen years old, whereas I was eighteen.
She gave me a look that said that she understood how I felt before opening up the door and walking out, leaving me to follow her.
“Not according to my brother. He thinks your number is up or something,” she said with a slight eye roll, but I just laughed at her terminology.
“I don’t plan on dying any time soon, can you tell him that?” I said sarcastically as we walked through the long hallway that led down some stairs and onto the main floor.
She glanced at me, her hands in her pockets as she shrugged, “That’s what his old mate said too.”
Her words stopped me in my tracks and I had to speed up to catch up with her. I was about to ask her what she meant but we turned in to a room with a group of pack members in it.
They all turned their heads toward me, but Sophia just kept walking through the room like it was no big deal.
A few of the male pack members were scanning my body and Sophia snapped her fingers as we passed, “Hey boys, eyes off. She’s off limits and out of your leagues.” A couple of them laughed before returning to the TV program they had been watching.
When we exited the room Sophia gave me a smile, “Sergio is the protective type. I just saved their skins.”
My heart began to speed up as we neared a room with closed double doors and I knew that Sergio was in there.
Instead of knocking, Sophia walked straight in to the room as if she owned the place.
I was surprised to find a girl with a tight, blonde bun sitting at the desk instead of Sergio.
She glared up at Sophia, “You cannot go in there right now. He is about to close on a very important business deal.”
Sophia rolled her eyes and crossed her arms, “Oh yeah? Well, you can tell him that his mate is waiting out here for him, and then we will see how important this business deal is.” Her voice was so loud that Sergio was bound to have heard it through the door that separated him from us.
The woman, whose name was Felicity based on the engravings in her desk, shook her head, “You two need to wait outside.”
Sophia did not argue and instead she turned toward me and motioned for me to leave the room as well, muttering some rude things about Felicity.
"She thinks that because she is my brother’s pretty secretary and little play toy she can do whatever she wants.”
I was a little concerned about the fact that Sophia said “play toy” but decided to brush it off. We closed the door behind us and waited outside of the room for about ten minutes. The entire time my heart was beating out of my chest and I paced back and forth while Sophia chattered aimlessly.
Finally, a middle aged man walked out of the room carrying a briefcase and Felicity immediately followed.
“Alpha Sergio will see you now,” she said it smoothly, with an almost eerie expression on her face.
I walked in to the secretary’s office with Sophia behind me, but before Sophia could enter, Felicity stopped her.
“No, he only wants to see her,” Felicity said with a small smirk while Sophia looked utterly annoyed but stayed back.
I waited for Felicity to come back into the room, but she never did. Instead, she closed the door to her office so that I was alone in there.
Adrenaline was coursing through my veins as I took a few hesitant steps toward the door before placing my hand on the cold handle and turning it slowly until I heard a click and opened it.
Immediately, his scent overcame my senses and I breathed in sharply to take it all in. It was husky yet sweet in a sharp way, and the abundance of it made my knees go weak.
My gaze fell on his huge figure, which was facing away from me while he looked out of a window.
He wore a nice white shirt that contrasted his tan skin with what looked like a black tie that was strung loosely around his neck. His pants were black and tight, showing off his powerful legs and figure.
He brought a glass of what looked like whiskey up to his lips before he turned toward me and said in his dark, hungry voice,
“Iris.”
“Iris,” his husky voice made me blush slightly, since no one really called me Iris other than my dad. I opened my mouth to tell him to just call me Ris, but my throat caught and I quickly closed it once again. He gave me a hard look when I said nothing, his intimidating gaze sweeping down my body as if he was inspecting me. “How old are you?” He asked in a cold voice, his tone surprising me. “I’m eighteen…” I said quietly, unsure of how he would react to my youth. Sergio’s eyes hardened slightly when I spoke, and I was unsure if it was because of my reply, or just my voice. He looked almost ashamed of himself and I couldn’t help from wonder his age. To me, he looked like he was in his twenties, but looks could deceive. Sergio took a few steps closer to me, and I could feel the space between us closing, making my heart skip rapidly. But before the distance between us clos
“Um no… well, not at will,” I restated, trying to make myself sound less pathetic. “It sort of happens randomly. Less and less as I’ve gotten older.”Sophia laughed, but there was nothing malicious in the sound. “That’s insane! Does Sergio know?”I grimaced. “I doubt it. And I’d like to keep it that way. Don’t want to give him another reason to hate me.” I tried to act like it was no big deal, and Sophia seemed taken by my façade. She shrugged. “To be honest, I think he is scared of you. He thinks that there is something wrong with him because he found another mate right after his last one died.” Before I could say anything else about the subject, she smiled. “You want me to help you pack for your trip tonight?”“I don’t have anything to pack.” I failed to hide
I then realized that tears were streaming down my face rapidly as I gasped for air, “They j-jumped in front of the c-car and…” I tried to explain what happened, but I couldn’t get the words out as I shook from my sobbing.“Shhh,” he hushed me in a soft voice, one I had not heard from him before, “Let’s get you out of here.”“It’s my seatbelt. It’s stuck,” I began to blunder with the restraint again, but he reached inside the car and placed a hand on mine.“That’s okay,” he murmured, “Place your hands on the roof and brace yourself.”I did as I was told, and he reached across me, his arm wrapping around my waist as he unfastened the seatbelt with ease. Momentarily, I was suspended in the air, and then, in one fluid motion, he caught me with one arm and lifted me out of the car with ease.
“Ouch!” I complained loudly as the same doctor, the woman with the gray eyes, wrapped up my stomach and ribcage in a gauze that made me look like a mummy.“Sorry, sorry,” she, whom I learned was named Trudy, muttered as she busily finished treating me back at the pack house in the doctor’s wing. The second we had arrived back at the pack house, Sergio ordered for somebody to take me up to the doctor’s wing so that I would be ready to depart for the witch doctor that evening. The accident had not phased Sergio’s plans of leaving that night to discover whether or not we should be mates.Trudy did a few more tests on me before patting my leg and taking off her gloves, “There you go, dear. You are all set. Remember to take some aspirin if you start to hurt anywhere.”I smiled at her gratefully, “Thank you, do you know-“
Suddenly, a wolf appeared on the side of the road and déjà vu hit me as I gasped, “Look out!”He smiled smoothly and slowly returned his eyes to the road, but not before easily deviating out of the way of the wolf.“What is your problem?” I was incensed that he was messing around so recklessly, “We almost wrecked again!”“Relax,” he rolled his eyes, “That was Rafael.” Although he was acting carefree, I could sense a hint of annoyance radiating off of him because of my tone.Somehow, his voice made me feel like a child and want to shrink back, “Oh…”However, he did slow down to a reasonable speed. We rode in silence for what seemed like forever, and I longed for him to turn on the radio or something to fill the vacant silence. The muteness began to
In that moment, I wished that I could spontaneously combust into flames so that I would not have to deal with the embarrassment that was sure to come.Sergio carried on his phone conversation as he walked in to the hotel room, completely oblivious to me standing in the center with only a towel wrapped around me, “Tell Raegan to take care of it until I-“He stopped talking the second his eyes landed on me, and instantly every muscle in his body stiffened at the sight.I could vaguely hear somebody on the other line say something, but Sergio hung up after a second. His eyes seemed to turn a shade darker than before and his broad body began to shake slightly, as if he were about to explode.I wanted to say something, but I could hardly breathe, let alone speak at the moment.Sergio was breathing heavily as he slowly turned away from me, both of his hands balled up in to
“I already told you,” he growled, “We may not be mates, but my wolf believes that we are.” Again, he reminded me that we are not even mates and that this entire situation is a mistake.“I am glad we are not. I always imagined my mate to be so much more than you…” I spoke through gritted teeth before turning away from him.I caught sight of Sergio’s face before I turned around though. His features were hardened and he looked enraged at my words and disrespect, but there was also a wave of hurt that showed briefly in his eyes. Before I could get far from him, an exotic man stepped out of his room. His eyes were golden as he looked between Sergio and me, probably wondering why we were being so loud.I was about to apologize to him for the disturbance, but before I could he smiled knowingly, “An Alpha and his Luna.”“
“We are stopping here,” Sergio told me as he pulled in to a parking lot for a large bar in what seemed like the middle of nowhere.I was still exhausted from the night before, so I had been trying to sleep on the way back to the pack house. Sergio and I had hardly spoken all morning, so it was not hard to drift away. I was actually becoming quite comfortable in the silence.“Why?” I groaned slightly as I looked out of the window at the bustling saloon. It was only six o’clock yet people were spilling out of its doors.“I need to do something. It will only take an hour,” he assured me as he slid out of the car with ease and began to walk to the door.I stepped out of the car, happy to finally stretch my legs once more, and speed-walked over to Sergio so that I could walk in with him.To my surprise, when we reached the entrance, Sergio hel
“What were you doing walking alone at night?” He took a step closer to me and folded his arms across his broad chest.“Why does it matter?” I muttered in disgust, trying to act like I could not stand his possessive questions.“Oh, I don’t know. Maybe because we are at war with a superior species of hybrids that roam the woods at night.” His snarled and took another step closer to me, so that we were only a few feet apart.“You can’t even shift. You would never be able to put up a fight against anything!” I knew he was losing his tempter, and fast.Suddenly, an idea came to me. “Well then teach me to fight.”He glanced at me, as if wondering if I was serious.“Teach me to fight against one of them. It makes since because, apparently, I am at some great risk.” I gestured to the
A loud clunk against my window woke me from my restless slumber. I jolted upright and shuffled toward the window so that I could see what was going on.“You woke her up, dummy!” A girl who looked about ten years old yelled at her young companion, a boy with dark waves of hair, from below my window. The little boy was chasing after his foam football, which was most likely what hit my window and caused the disturbance. At least my window did not kill a bird, I thought to myselfI smiled at the two children before stepping away from the window to let them continue with their games, but a familiar voice made me peek back down at them. Sergio had walked out of the house and was now talking to the two youngsters, although I could not decipher what they were saying. All I could focus on was the way his dark hair seemed to reflect the sun beams and the movement of his muscles beneath his tight-fitting shirt. Suddenly
A boy sitting next to Christina laughed slightly at my comment but said nothing; instead, he inspected me with narrowed eyes.“You know…” he shoved a piece of chicken that had just been brought out into his mouth, “you kind of look like her.”Instantly, the mood around the table changed and everyone tensed up. Sophia glanced at me slightly before biting her lip and looking away.“Like who?” apparently, it was a dumb question, because Christina slammed her silverware against her plate, causing the glass to shatter.Christina glared at me, “Sarah. Alpha’s true mate. And don’t flatter yourself, because you are nothing like her. You are never going to be her, so don’t even try.”She turned to the boy who was sitting next to her, “And you, John, how dare you compare this worthless transfer to my sister.&rdq
“No, they have not reached our region yet. None of our region’s four packs have been affected. The Black Raven Pack is probably the only one that knows about this anyways…” he muttered and relief flooded me.“Dammit Iris,” he growled furiously, “Now that man knows you are my mate.” That was the first time he had actually claimed me as his mate.I was going to ask him why that mattered, but figured that that would just make him more furious with me. He already seemed to think that I was to blame for all of this.“And why were you dancing with him anyways?” He finally glanced at me with his piercing blue eyes.“I could ask you the same question about that blonde that was clinging to you!” I shouted, finally having had enough of his accusations. To my surprise, Sergio smirked slightly as he sped down the windin
