Zander POV

I drove to the café where I had a date set up with Cleo. My rock music was set to a higher volume to drown out my thoughts. I hoped the date would go wrong. If only I could've gotten out of it.

I couldn't believe Cleo had actually agreed to go on a date with me. I'd bet her parents had convinced her to do this. She may have been my mate, but I wasn't excited to see her again. I sat with a bored expression on my face.

There was no point in hiding how I felt about the night. I rested my hand under my chin and looked out the window. I wished to be anywhere but the café.

The café was a French style and had simple white tablecloths and triangle folded napkins with pictures of Paris scattered throughout the place. There were even authentic berets placed on a table near the cashier's counter. I was told to wear one but would never wear something like that.

Cleo entered the café. She wasn't trying hard to impress me. A thin purple shirt hung on her loosely, while her jeans were a faded blue. I saw no trace of makeup on her either. Cleo sat down across from me.

She looked at me up and down and her face turned into one of disgust. I had purposely worn ripped jeans, an old band t-shirt, and worn black combat boots.

I made sure to leave my hair in its natural mess for the date. I could tell she wanted to say something to me by the look on her face.

"This wasn't my idea, but I agreed to show up. But don't think it's for your sake."

I ran a hand through my hair and said, "It wasn't my choice either. I'd rather be back home."

Cleo suddenly told me, "I'm not giving up on Ash. I still love him, but my parents forced me here tonight. Consider this me giving you a chance."

I sort of admired her guts to say that to my face and resisted a smile. "Wow you're giving me a chance. I feel so honored," I sarcastically said.

"It's the last chance Zander," she told me in a bitter tone.

I knew this was going to be a long night and glanced at my watch. The date didn't have to be long, right? Maybe she would hate me so much that she'd leave within an hour. I looked at her again and saw her hair was in a ponytail. No way was she trying either.

Unfortunately, we had to do some talking. I waited until she said something again, because I wouldn't be the first.

"Why did you show up Zander?"

Her question almost caught me off guard, and I had to get my composure back. I looked around the café and back at her. "For the food of course."

She scoffed and said, "Well at least you have honesty."

The waitress came and got our orders for drinks. "What would you like to drink?" I heard flirtation in her voice and ignored it.

I gave her a quick glance and said, "Just water."

I picked up the pepper shaker and examined it. I heard the waitress ask Cleo for her drink order next.

Cleo said kindly, "I'd like a Diet Coke."

Seconds went by in silence, so I pulled out a pen from my pocket and started to draw. I glanced up at Cleo briefly and she asked, "Are you seriously drawing right now?"

I nodded my head yes and focused on making a wolf's ears. She bunched up a napkin and threw it at me childishly. I looked up at her and glared.

"Princess. Could you not throw things at me? We're supposed to be adults."

Cleo got pissed off and said, "I would act like an adult if you did too. I mean, c'mon. You're drawing, Zander."

I showed her the drawing so far. She scoffed and crossed her arms over her chest. I continued to draw until the waitress came back.

She looked at me first and asked, "What would you like to order?"

"I'll have the tuna salad with fries."

I handed her the menu and picked up my pen and started spinning it between my fingers.

The waitress turned to Cleo and asked, "What would you like to order hon?"

Did she really just call her hon? I tried not to burst out laughing, because they looked near the same age.

Cleo smiled and said, "I'd like the BLT special."

The waitress wrote down her order and went on her way. After the waitress left, I was alone with Cleo again. She kept her eyes on me with a judgmental face and started tapping her fingers against the table. I set the pen down and looked at her sharply.

"Are you trying to piss me off? You're so noisy."

Cleo put her hands up defensively and said, "I'm not the one ignoring my date. Excuse me if I was trying to keep from boredom."

"Fine. I guess we can try to be civil."

"Whoa. You actually can be an adult."

I pushed my hair away from my eyes and said, "Yeah I'm not an animal." I laughed and said, "Oh wait, I am. Sometimes."

She almost seemed like she was going to laugh. I began to feel my lips go up into a smirk. I almost made her laugh. Did this Ash make her laugh? Not that I cared about their relationship. He could keep her.

Cleo stared at my band shirt a few minutes later and seemed like she was trying to read the name. I laughed because it had long ago faded.

"What's so funny?"

"You won't be able to read it. The band's name is long gone."

Cleo laughed in a bitter tone and said, "I wasn't looking at your shirt. I was looking at the dessert menu."

Sure, she was. What a nice cover up she had.

The waitress brought bread and set it down. I took a piece of bread and buttered it before taking a big bite of it. Cleo seemed disgusted with everything I did and watched me eat the bread in a few bites.

"You basically inhaled that. Did you even taste that?"

I gave a fake look of being offended and clutched my hand over my heart. "Wow a shot has been fired."

Cleo changed the topic suddenly and said, "I don't want anything to do with you."

I smiled in a knowing way and leaned in close to her. "That's one thing I can agree on. I don't want anything to do with you either."

I watched Cleo to see if she would respond to my words. I'm sure it secretly made her happy that I didn't want to be with her. She could keep her precious fiancé. I didn't care at all. It was better to tell her the truth than pretend I wanted anything to do with her.

Before Cleo answered me, a guy with blond hair strolled in. The blond spotted Cleo and me and headed right for us. Cleo's eyes widened at the sight of the guy. It wasn't hard to tell these two knew each other. They had a kind of magnet-like energy going on about them.

Zander POVHe stood beside my chair. Great. I needed to be bothered by a stranger. I set my hand underneath my jaw and stared at him unamused. The guy gave me a death glare and had his arms crossed over his chest. I assumed this was Cleo's fiancé. His testosterone was showing. How did he know we were even at the café? I found it a little creepy. We hadn't openly told everyone about this date. I thought her parents were the only ones who knew about our plans. Had someone within our pack spread rumors that reached his pack? I've never seen him around ours, so I knew he was from a different one."Ash, what are you doing here?" Cleo's voice sounded up an octave than usual as she asked the question. She seemed almost scared with her unusual pitch of voice. I wasn't scared at all. He didn't look intimidating. He wore a dress shirt and top of the line jeans and shoes. Ash seemed like someone who thought he was better than everyone else. It was the way he stood up straight and tall.

Zander POVI strolled through the mansion and walked past Cleo's room. I wasn't sure why I headed that direction, because I tried to not to see her much after the date. She probably hated me after that night. I had almost punched her fiancé in the face after all.Who wouldn't hate someone after that happens? I'd be surprised if she actually didn't hate me. Plus, our date was pretty bad. My wish had come true.I stopped when I heard her voice say, "Mom, do I seriously have to go off to train at another pack? Why can't I stay here?"I heard her dad's familiar voice sternly state, "You've got to train at another pack, since you aren't with your mate. It'll help make up for the loss of strength you have." He added, "This isn't optional Cleo."Cleo sounded angry and said, "Okay. I guess I'll go."Her mom added, "Zander is going to be going with you."I had to hear what she was going to say about me and stayed a little longer. Cleo's voice rose to anger and she said, "He has to go with

Zander gazed into my eyes before pulling away quickly. My heart was racing so fast. I wondered if he heard my heart beating. It felt as if it would leap out of my chest. He said apologetically, "I don't know what came over me. Please forgive me."Forgive him for trying to kiss me? He shouldn't have apologized for that. Wait, what was I saying? I had Ash. But I couldn't ignore what I felt for Zander. He still had my heart rate up just by looking at me.Finally, I said, "It's okay. Let's just forget about this.""Good idea."I turned my gaze away from him and tried to calm myself down.He seemed different tonight, and I felt more aware of him than usual. Part of me wanted that kiss from him. I shook my head and noticed he was watching me."What are you thinking about?""Nothing." I tried to avoid eye contact and added, "We should get back on the road."He nodded his head in agreement and paid the bill for us without asking me. On the way out the door he held it for me. I stood in the training room facing my sparring partner. We were randomly paired up with someone. I was stuck with a girl who was a couple of inches taller than me and had a nose ring and eyebrow piercing. She didn't scare me, however.Within minutes she knocked me down with her wooden staff. I tried to get back up and was quickly pushed down. That was only the first partner I went through. The Alpha came into the room and said, "You all have to learn how to fight against an opponent who may have an advantage over you."She paired us up with people who were either taller, stronger, or faster than us. I got paired with a guy who was quite taller and more physically built than me. He looked down and me and said, "This will be a piece of cake.""That's what you think. You don't know what you're up against."I held back from punching him in the mouth and readied myself for our fight. Before we started, he added, "I want to do hand-to-hand combat.""I can handle that. You're on."

The following day, I stood in the living room near the couch. We were off from training from the day which made me grateful. I was already healed from my bruises from the day before because of the healing abilities I got as a wolf.I had been debating for the last hour if I wanted to call Ash. He'd been on my mind since last night. This had been the longest we'd gone without talking.I wasn't sure if he had messaged me or not. I'd been too busy with training to even look at my phone. It also didn't help he didn't pick up the other day. What if he was mad at me for going on the trip with Zander? I knew he disliked Zander and had a good reason to be jealous. I mean, Zander was a very good-looking guy. I needed to shove that thought to the back of my mind.I glanced at my engagement ring and missed Ash.I picked up my phone and decided to call him without a doubt. He needed to hear from me. I'm sure he worried about how I was doing with the Full Moon pack. My hurt ached for him. As

Emerald had punched me in the face and dragged me to my feet. She was stronger than her body build would've suggested. I mean, she was shorter than me by a couple inches and on the skinny side. How had she packed such a punch? She knocked me back down and kicked me hard in the ribs and hovered over me. Her face twisted into an ugly scowl. At that point, I was drained of any previous energy.I knew she had won and tried to keep my face empty of any strong emotions. I kept my face empty of any strong emotions. No way would I let her think she'd knocked down my confidence. I'd try to keep as much dignity as possible. She threw a couple more punches at my face and said, "You're a poor excuse for a future Alpha."Emerald took my phone and walked away before I could answer her back. Pain spread through my face, side, and ribs. Blood dripped from my nose and bottom lip. I looked down and my shirt had blood on it. I wasn't sure if it was hers, mine, or a mixture of both. I guessed the latt

I pushed thoughts away of what I heard Zander say earlier. Maybe he wasn't serious. I snuck out to the living room to meet him. We had decided to get my phone back at night. No one would get suspicious if they didn't spot us.Everyone should've been asleep by midnight. At least I hoped. Getting caught sneaking around would look bad. I didn't want to lose the Full Moon pack's trust. It was weird how different the headquarters looked at night. There was almost an eerie feel with how quiet it was. The moon shone brightly on the hardwood floor. He sat with a bored expression on the couch and had a faint blue glow to his face. I stood in front of him with my hands on my hips.I whispered in an irritated way, "Are you done yet?"He put his phone away and quietly followed me. I tried to push away what sparks I felt from the kiss with Zander. Last night it had been hard to fall asleep without thinking about our lips touching. The kiss was felt through my every being. I even dreamed about Zander and woke up sweating. It was so wrong.Ash would've been so mad at me for doing what I did. I had guilt over what I did but would've done it again if I had to. I had no choice the night before. But I sure wouldn't tell Ash what had happened. We always tried to tell each other the truth and didn't keep secrets. I had to keep that tiny secret from him. It wasn't a serious kiss though.I took a shower after breakfast and tried to push thoughts about Zander away. I had to face him again soon. He probably wouldn't bring it up again. I hoped he wouldn't. Facing these new feelings was a problem. Before lunch, I decided to visit Zander and attempt to get my phone again. I mean, it couldn't go any worse than yesterday. I had a new plan that would be better than the last ti

The next morning, I woke to Zander's sleeping face next to me. My heart almost burst with how much I loved him. I smiled to myself remembering the day before. I stroked his hair and moved a strand away from his eyes.It was almost hard to stop stroking his hair. As Zander slept, I heard him say something. I thought it was sweet how he said my name while sleeping. I knew what he was dreaming about and felt happy he couldn't get me off his mind. Zander wouldn't get out of my mind either.A few more minutes later, I got of bed and went into the shower with my clothes from the day before. I didn't care if I repeated my outfit. While I was waiting for the water to get hot, Zander came in and slowly took in the sight of me. He was still naked from our night together.Zander approached me and whispered in my ear, "Want me to join you?"I nodded my head and stepped into the shower. The water was hot and so was Zander's gaze.Zander pressed me against the wall and knelt down near my fe

I interrupted Zander after I found him in the kitchen eating dinner. "Do you want to hang out?"As I looked at Zander, I realized something. I knew I could be with Zander since Ash was out of my life. I didn't have to keep my promise to him anymore, and he had Candice now. Zander got up and went over to me and kissed my cheek. "Just let me finish my dinner first, and I'll meet you in my room."I headed towards his room and sat down on his desk chair. Before I had never looked around his room and decided to check it out. He had a board with drawings pinned to it. Some of them were of me and others were of wolves. Suddenly Zander's voice startled me, "Do you like what you see?""These drawings are really good. I didn't know you had this talent.""I get it from my mom. She was an artist back in the day. I learned from her.""I'm sure she'd be proud of you."Zander got quiet and didn't say anything back. "I'm glad you're alive too. I was worried about you during the battle."Megan's eyes filled with tears, and she hugged me tighter. I needed her comfort from the horrible ambush we had just gotten over. It made me feel a hint better.Megan asked, "Have you seen your parents yet?"I shook my head no and asked, "Why, have they been looking for me?"Megan nodded her head yes and walked away. We didn't need to get reprimanded for leaving the Full Moon pack before our training was over.Cleo came into the room with an irritated look on her face. I got up from her desk chair that I had been sitting on. It was a little concerning to see how angry she was. I'd never seen Cleo look this level of pissed off. She was flushed and had her hands clenched into tight fists.Things must've gone badly when she talked to Ash. I wanted to know what that asshole had done to her. Ash had never been someone I liked around our pack, but now I absolutely hated him. He was a sad excuse for a future Alpha.I knew I had to comfort Cleo and let her vent.
