Zander POV

I strolled through the mansion and walked past Cleo's room. I wasn't sure why I headed that direction, because I tried to not to see her much after the date. She probably hated me after that night. I had almost punched her fiancé in the face after all.

Who wouldn't hate someone after that happens? I'd be surprised if she actually didn't hate me. Plus, our date was pretty bad. My wish had come true.

I stopped when I heard her voice say, "Mom, do I seriously have to go off to train at another pack? Why can't I stay here?"

I heard her dad's familiar voice sternly state, "You've got to train at another pack, since you aren't with your mate. It'll help make up for the loss of strength you have." He added, "This isn't optional Cleo."

Cleo sounded angry and said, "Okay. I guess I'll go."

Her mom added, "Zander is going to be going with you."

I had to hear what she was going to say about me and stayed a little longer. Cleo's voice rose to anger and she said, "He has to go with me! Are you serious?!"

"Yes. Now go get packing and get going," her dad said.

For some reason, I wanted to check on her but hid until her parents were out of sight. I didn't want them to know I heard everything.

When I went to her room, she was packing up a floral duffel bag. She looked up at me and asked, "What do you want?"

"I was just curious how much packing you had done. I know we're going on a trip together."

"Don't remind me. Now could you go? I don't have time for this Zander."

"See you later princess," I teasingly said.

I left her room and finished packing my stuff. Then I went to stand outside the mansion to lean against my black truck. I hoped we'd take my truck and not her flashy car. Most pack members had expensive cars, but I wanted a simple truck and motorcycle. If only we could've taken that for the trip.

By accident, I overheard Cleo's goodbye to her fiancé. I heard his showoff mustang convertible driving up the road as I sat in the truck bed.

My enhanced hearing picked up Cleo's voice. She sounded close to crying as she said, "I've got to go leave for my trip. I'll miss you so much."

Ash's voice spoke in a sad tone and he said, "I'll miss you too. You're my beautiful girl."

"You're going to make me cry Ash."

She started crying loudly seconds later, and I got off my truck bed to see what was going on. They were embracing, and his arms were around her waist. He even kissed her on the lips, which made me look away.

I heard a final words from Cleo, "Goodbye Ash. I'll see you soon. I love you so much."

I got into my truck and started it and played my rock music. I set it at a volume lower than I liked to hear it and tried to be considerate. Cleo slowly walked over to my truck and I got out.

"Ready to go princess?" I said the last word in a teasing way.

She nodded her head and climbed into the passenger side of my truck. I started to back out of the property and drove off in the direction of the Full Moon pack. They were many miles away from ours. It'd probably take four hours to get there.

After minutes of silence, she asked me a question I wasn't expecting. "Why don't you want to be my mate?"

I decided to tell her truth and took a deep breath. "I can't be your mate because of my mission in life. Since I was a kid, I've been looking for the Rogue wolf who killed my parents." I paused and added, "I can't be distracted by a mate. I won't be able to get my revenge for my parents' sake."

Cleo's face softened as she looked at me and said, "I had no idea. I'm so sorry about your parents. That must've been so hard on you." She paused and added, "Don't worry I won't distract you. I'll keep my distance."

I glanced at her and then back to the road and said, "I'll keep away from you too. I know you want to be with Ash."

She seemed to blush at his name, and we got quiet for a while. I think Cleo liked my music, since she mouthed some of the words as songs played. I turned up the music to hear it better and avoided smiling at Cleo's dance skills.

I just wished my mate wasn't her, because I thought I could fall for her if I let my guard down too much. I realized she was a fascinating, smart, and beautiful girl, as I spent more time with her.

Cleo wore skinny jeans, black Converse, and a tight t-shirt that was a little low. She even had makeup on, and her brown hair was wavy. I noticed what she was wearing when I glanced at her at a stop light.

I wished I had worn something more attractive. My jeans were black ripped ones, and I had a leather jacket over a gray t-shirt. At least I had brushed my hair.

Two hours passed and we stopped to get lunch and have a bathroom break. I pulled off at an exit that had a retro diner.

There was a jukebox that played classic fifties hits placed in the center of the diner. Waitresses wore red dresses of the fifties style and roller-skates. I also spotted black and white checkerboard floors, and booths were red leather with checkered patterns on their tables. Walls were covered with pictures of singers such as Elvis Presley.

I let Cleo slide into a booth first. I slid into the booth opposite of hers and noticed she looked extra beautiful in the light of the diner. Stop it. Pushing away those thoughts, I looked through my menu. My gut feeling was making me want to sit beside her.

Before I thought about it, I moved to sit beside Cleo. She gave me a funny look and asked, "Why are you over here?" She added kindly, "I'm feeling squished."

"I want to be better company."

Cleo gave a faint smile and started looking through her menu. I grabbed my menu from the other end of the table and scanned through it. Was she feeling the stronger attraction towards me? This was the longest we'd been around each other.

I got a strong urge to kiss her and leaned in close before stopping short of her lips. She looked at me with wide eyes.

I stood in the training room facing my sparring partner. We were randomly paired up with someone. I was stuck with a girl who was a couple of inches taller than me and had a nose ring and eyebrow piercing. She didn't scare me, however.Within minutes she knocked me down with her wooden staff. I tried to get back up and was quickly pushed down. That was only the first partner I went through. The Alpha came into the room and said, "You all have to learn how to fight against an opponent who may have an advantage over you."She paired us up with people who were either taller, stronger, or faster than us. I got paired with a guy who was quite taller and more physically built than me. He looked down and me and said, "This will be a piece of cake.""That's what you think. You don't know what you're up against."I held back from punching him in the mouth and readied myself for our fight. Before we started, he added, "I want to do hand-to-hand combat.""I can handle that. The following day, I stood in the living room near the couch. We were off from training from the day which made me grateful. I was already healed from my bruises from the day before because of the healing abilities I got as a wolf.I had been debating for the last hour if I wanted to call Ash. He'd been on my mind since last night. This had been the longest we'd gone without talking.I wasn't sure if he had messaged me or not. I'd been too busy with training to even look at my phone. It also didn't help he didn't pick up the other day. What if he was mad at me for going on the trip with Zander? I knew he disliked Zander and had a good reason to be jealous. I mean, Zander was a very good-looking guy. I needed to shove that thought to the back of my mind.I glanced at my engagement ring and missed Ash.I picked up my phone and decided to call him without a doubt. He needed to hear from me. I'm sure he worried about how I was doing with the Full Moon pack. My hurt ached for him. As

Emerald had punched me in the face and dragged me to my feet. She was stronger than her body build would've suggested. I mean, she was shorter than me by a couple inches and on the skinny side. How had she packed such a punch? She knocked me back down and kicked me hard in the ribs and hovered over me. Her face twisted into an ugly scowl. At that point, I was drained of any previous energy.I knew she had won and tried to keep my face empty of any strong emotions. I kept my face empty of any strong emotions. No way would I let her think she'd knocked down my confidence. I'd try to keep as much dignity as possible. She threw a couple more punches at my face and said, "You're a poor excuse for a future Alpha."Emerald took my phone and walked away before I could answer her back. Pain spread through my face, side, and ribs. Blood dripped from my nose and bottom lip. I looked down and my shirt had blood on it. I wasn't sure if it was hers, mine, or a mixture of both. I pushed thoughts away of what I heard Zander say earlier. Maybe he wasn't serious. I snuck out to the living room to meet him. We had decided to get my phone back at night. No one would get suspicious if they didn't spot us.Everyone should've been asleep by midnight. At least I hoped. Getting caught sneaking around would look bad. I didn't want to lose the Full Moon pack's trust. It was weird how different the headquarters looked at night. There was almost an eerie feel with how quiet it was. The moon shone brightly on the hardwood floor. He sat with a bored expression on the couch and had a faint blue glow to his face. I stood in front of him with my hands on my hips.I whispered in an irritated way, "Are you done yet?"He put his phone away and quietly followed me. I tried to push away what sparks I felt from the kiss with Zander. Last night it had been hard to fall asleep without thinking about our lips touching. The kiss was felt through my every being. I even dreamed about Zander and woke up sweating. It was so wrong.Ash would've been so mad at me for doing what I did. I had guilt over what I did but would've done it again if I had to. I had no choice the night before. But I sure wouldn't tell Ash what had happened. We always tried to tell each other the truth and didn't keep secrets. I had to keep that tiny secret from him. It wasn't a serious kiss though.I took a shower after breakfast and tried to push thoughts about Zander away. I had to face him again soon. He probably wouldn't bring it up again. I hoped he wouldn't. Facing these new feelings was a problem. Before lunch, I decided to visit Zander and attempt to get my phone again. I mean, it couldn't go any worse than yesterday. Zander barged into my suite. I sat on my bed and stared at my phone while willing a call from Ash to happen. So far, it had not been working. He came up to me and asked, "Did you get any messages from your fiancé?" He said the last word with a hint of spite. Was it that obvious? I hoped I wasn't that easy to figure out."No. I haven't heard from him at all.""What a shame," Zander said in a fake tone of sympathy.I wondered what he wanted. I set my phone down and looked him in the eyes."Is there something you want?""You promised that you'd spar with me, remember?"Oh right. I had said that he could if he helped me. I almost wanted to change my mind because of the close proximity we'd have to be in. I wasn't sure my heart could handle all that closeness with Zander.Just looking at him caused me to feel a warmth spread throughout my body. I was still in Zander's embrace. He kept his eyes on mine and brushed a hand down my cheek slowly. It sent shivers down my neck. I couldn't let him make me stray from Ash.Zander moved close to my lips and said, "I think that's enough training. It was fun."I resisted telling him that he couldn't trick me. Part of me really wanted another kiss. I felt disgusted that I wanted someone like I did with Ash. It was so bad. He released me from his hold and got up and walked out of the training room. How could he just leave after putting me in that situation? My heart was still trying to go back to its regular rate. I needed to get a hold of myself and fast. I sat up and ran a hand through my hair. Had he just been messing with me? Half of me wanted to run after him and make him explain what that was about. A guy couldn't just do something so intimate and run off.I decided t

"Just let me finish my dinner first, and I'll meet you in my room."I headed towards his room and sat down on his desk chair. Before I had never looked around his room and decided to check it out. He had a board with drawings pinned to it. Some of them were of me and others were of wolves. Suddenly Zander's voice startled me, "Do you like what you see?""These drawings are really good.
