Freedom.
It sounded so strange in my ears. I couldn't believe it. I walked disoriented behind Mira, barely listening to her happy chatter. Everything felt... surreal.
Then she stopped and placed a hand on my shoulder. “Are you okay?” she asked, her voice gentle but firm.
I stared at her for a long moment, and then, without warning, the tears came. A sob tore from my throat, and I crumbled. I didn’t know why. Maybe it was relief. Maybe it was exhaustion. Maybe it was just gratitude—for her, for this moment, for the chance to breathe again.
Mira didn’t hesitate. She pulled me into a tight hug, holding me as I broke down. “It’s fine,” she murmured, stroking my back. “Everything will be fine.”
For what felt like hours, I let myself cry, let the weight of everything spill out. When I finally stopped, I felt lighter—emptier, but in a good way.
Mira smiled warmly, wiping a stray tear from my cheek. “It’s a good start, Hun. I’m here now, so whenever you feel overwhelmed, just cry. Crying is a sign of strength, and I know—no, I believe—that you are one strong Luna. I can feel it.”
"She's right, you know," Nyx murmured in my head, her tone softer than usual. "You're stronger than you think. And now? You’re free. Let yourself feel it."
I nodded, swallowing hard.
Then, with a deep breath, I steadied myself, and we continued our journey to the kitchen.
As soon as we stepped outside, the pack’s curiosity turned into a full-on spectacle.
People paused mid-conversation, eyes darting toward me like I was some rare animal at the zoo. The whispers started immediately.
"That’s her?" someone muttered. "Didn’t think she’d actually show her face."
"She looks… normal?" another added, like they expected me to have horns or breathe fire.
A guy leaned in to his friend. "Bet she won’t last a week.”
I kept walking, my back straight, but the stares clung to me like vines. I wasn’t used to this—being seen, being noticed. It made my skin itch.
Mira, on the other hand, had zero patience. She let out a loud, exaggerated sigh. “Damn, I didn’t realize the pack had this much free time. Do you all even train anymore, or is staring at people the new strategy?”
A few of them shifted uncomfortably. Someone snorted. “We’re just curious.”
Mira crossed her arms. “Curious about what?”
Another girl, arms linked with her friend, tilted her head at me. “It’s just weird. We heard she's mute. No offense, but you don’t look like a Luna.”
“That's a big weakness for the pack. A weak and mute Luna.” Her friend added.
That one stung, even though I wasn’t sure why. Maybe because I didn’t know how a Luna was supposed to look or behave or maybe because part of me believed that they were actually right.
Nyx scoffed in my head. "Who cares what they think? Don't let them get to you. Keep your head strong Elara, you have to fight for us.”
“I wish Lilith was here, at least we won't have this weak thing to be our Luna.” Someone muttered loud enough for me to hear.
The words hit harder than I expected. Weak. Like I was some fragile, unworthy replacement. My stomach twisted, but I kept my face blank. I wouldn’t give them the satisfaction of a reaction.
Mira, though? She went still. I could practically feel the storm brewing inside her.
She inhaled deeply, then exhaled through her nose, like she was counting to ten before swinging. “Come on,” she muttered, gripping my wrist. “Let’s get you to the kitchen before I start throwing punches.”
I didn’t argue.
After two hours in the kitchen, Mira finally sent me back to my room, claiming I needed rest. I didn’t argue—I was too drained to fight her on it.
But rest never came.
I lay on the bed, staring at the ceiling, my mind stuck on the pack’s words. Weak. Unworthy. A replacement. The name Lilith kept circling in my head like an unanswered question.
Who was she? What did she mean to them? And more importantly… why did they think she was better than me?
"Probably their last Luna," Nyx muttered. "And by the sound of it, she was everything you’re not—strong, respected, untouchable."
I swallowed hard. Great. That only made me feel worse.
Hours passed, the sky outside shifting from gold to deep blue. The pack house was quiet now, the once-busy yard empty. I assumed everyone had gone inside, probably gathered for dinner or heading to bed.
A thought crept into my mind, and before I could push it away, Nyx pounced on it.
"You should go find Mira."
I frowned. Now?
"Yes, now. She’s the only one on your side, and you need answers. You’re not going to get them by sulking in here."
I hesitated. Stepping outside alone, after everything today, felt like walking into a lion’s den. But at the same time… sitting here, drowning in unanswered questions, felt worse.
Before I could overthink it, I stood up.
"Atta girl," Nyx purred. "Now let’s go find out who the hell Lilith was."
Halfway down the hallway, an unsettling silence wrapped around me. My pulse quickened. Something felt off.
"Keep walking Elara, don't freeze now," Nyx whispered.
I swallowed hard, hoping my legs would move faster.
Then-boom.
I barely had time to react when they appeared. Kieran's guards. Five of them, approaching me like predators approaching their prey.
Well, well,” one said, arms crossed. “Look who’s out and about without a babysitter.”
They laughed as they circled me, like wolves playing with their prey.
“Lost your voice, mute girl?” another teased, giving me a shove.
“Say something Luna” another whispered in my ear.
“Command us to stop.”
I wanted to yell at them, tell them to leave me alone. But my throat burned, like the words were locked inside. I tried to speak—anything—but nothing came out.
My chest tightened. My vision blurred. Memories of the Mooncrest pack rushed back. The insults. The fear. The helplessness.
"Not now, Elara. Don’t let them win," Nyx pushed. "You’re stronger than this."
I wasn’t. Not yet.
“What’s wrong? Can't use your Luna powers?” one of them sneered, shoving me harder.
“Say something,” another growled. “Anything.”
My legs felt like stone. My voice? Gone.
“She’s useless,” the first one laughed. “A pathetic little mute girl, not worthy of being our Luna.”
"Wish Lilith was here to teach her her place," he added.
Their laughter felt like daggers.
"Ugh, Lilith, Lilith, Lilith, I'm tired of hearing her name. Punch him already! Break his nose or something!" Nyx snapped.
Another shove and my knees hit the cold floor hard.
“Talk when you’re spoken to,” one of them spat, lifting his hand to hit me.
"Do something! Don’t just sit there!" Nyx yelled in my head.
I squeezed my eyes shut, waiting for the hit—
“Is there a problem here?”
A sharp voice cut through the hallway.
Everything froze.
“Is there a problem here?”The voice was sharp—like steel slicing through the thick fog in my mind. I blinked, vision clearing just enough to see her.She stepped into the dim hallway light, clad in dark training leathers, sleeves rolled up like she didn’t have time for nonsense. She wasn’t tall, but the confidence she carried made her seem like a giant. Short, messy hair framed a face that said, ‘Try me.’The warriors stiffened.“We were just—” the sneering one started.“Leaving,” she snapped, not giving him the chance to finish. And just like that, they scattered like roaches when the light flicks on.She turned to me, her sharp glare softening slightly. “You, okay?” she asked while helping me stand.I nodded, though my heart was still sprinting like it owed someone money. She tilted her head, studying me. “You must be Elara. I’m Astrid.”Nyx’s voice in my head was smug. “I like her. Keep her.”Astrid glanced at my trembling hands and rolled her eyes, “don’t let idiots like that get
Kieran’s POVI could feel her determination through the link, but that wasn’t the only thing.I felt her pains, too. Every time Astrid struck her, I felt it. The blows weren’t even that strong, so why did they hurt her so much? And more importantly, why wasn’t she leaving? Then she fell and I could feel her weakening, the bond pulsing violently against my wrist. She was in danger.“That’s enough,” I told Astrid, my voice sharp, commanding. Final. “It’s her first day.”Astrid lowered her hands immediately, stepping back.I turned to Elara, starting to speak. “There’s no –” when she fell again. My breath caught.“Elara!”I shouted as I caught her before she hit the ground, my arms locking around her too-thin frame. I couldn’t feel her anymore. The bond, which had been thrumming with pain and exhaustion, went silent. The moment the bond went silent, my heart slammed against my ribs, panic twisting through me like a blade. I didn’t like this feeling. For the first time in years, I felt sc
Elara’s POVI woke up after what felt like ages and immediately knew something was strange, I felt different; I felt strong, whole and more alive.I breathed in, expecting the familiar weight of exhaustion, but it never came. My limbs didn’t ache and my head wasn’t heavy. I felt light and POWERFUL. My eyes flew open at the foreign feeling, and I couldn’t help but take a good look at my body. The scars were gone. What exactly happened last night?“Our energy well was unblocked!” Nyx exclaimed, her voice practically vibrating with excitement. “We’re free!” ‘What…happened…Nyx?’ I asked, my voice shaking.“Kieren unblocked our energy well,” she gushed, “Mira tried healing you, but she found out about the blocked well, and told him to give you some of his blood. He did, and then he used his alpha power to chase away the magic that was keeping it sealed. After that, he gave you some of his energy to fill up for all the years you lost.” She rambled in a high-pitched voice. Kieran. The nam
I woke to a strange sensation, like my body was vibrating with energy. My skin tingled, and my muscles burned. I was a werewolf, so heightened senses and reflexes were normal, but today… today felt different. It was like my energy reserve was overflowing, and I needed to release it.In Mooncrest Pack, I was only allowed to shift four times a year, and I had learned to live with it. It wasn’t April yet, which meant I wasn’t due for another shift. But this urge—this uncontrollable need to run—was impossible to ignore.I jumped out of bed, throwing on whatever clothes I could grab because I knew I’d be taking them off in a few minutes anyway. Without hesitation, I bolted outside. The cool morning air hit my skin as I sprinted toward the Blackwood Forest, a massive stretch of land behind the packhouse. It was so vast that even running at full speed, it would take hours to circle it. Once I reached a large tree deep in the forest, I hid behind it and began to strip.“Nyx, are you ready?” I
Kieran handed the phone back to me, his expression unreadable. Without another word, he stood, his voice slicing through the air like a blade.“Gather the warriors and guards. We’re having an emergency meeting.”“Yes, Alpha,” Tobias responded without hesitation, falling into step behind him.Astrid gave me a small wave. “Bye, guys.” Then she was gone, leaving just Mira and me in the quiet kitchen.A tense silence stretched between us before Mira shifted uncomfortably. “I hope it’s nothing serious…” She bit her lip, glancing toward the door as if expecting someone to walk back in. “It’s been a long time since we were last attacked. The last time was when…” She cut herself off, her face tightening.I looked at her and quickly typed on my phone: “When what?”Mira hesitated, her gaze flickering to the door, before focusing back on me. Then she shook her head. “No, don’t worry Luna. It’s a long story.”Nyx stirred in the back of my mind. “Ask her about Lilith. We forgot the other day.”Rig
Kieran’s POV“What are you doing here, Magnus?” I growled, shifting back into my human form.Magnus followed suit, standing tall with that same smug expression I despised. “Hi there, Pup. Good to see you too.”I clenched my fists. I never really understood why he called me that, but I fueled a deep rage deep inside me. Fenrir snarled, eager to take control. The wolves around me started growling and moved in surrounding him.We stood there naked and I scanned the area behind him. “You’re alone.”He smirked. “I don’t need an army to take you down, Pup.”Alex snapped his teeth at Magnus, but Magnus just chuckled. “Whoa, whoa, control your little friends, Pup. I came to introduce myself. I doubt these pups know me.”“What are you doing here?” I asked again, my voice dropped low.Magnus laughed. “Whoa, scary. You’re a grown man now.” When I didn’t react, his grin faded.“I heard you got married.”My eyes narrowed. “And how is that your business? You trespassed into my territory just to gos
Elara’s POVIt was late. The whole place was quiet, too quiet. Something felt off. The second Kieran came back from the border, this weight settled in my chest. Nyx wouldn’t stop pacing.“Something is wrong with him.” Nyx said, restless. “He’s too cold over the link. He’s blocking us out, I can’t reach him. “You know what, let’s go see him. At least comfort him… the way he did for you last time.”She was right. I remembered the day after I fainted. I should go.I left my room and moved through the halls. There were guards at every corner. What really happened here? I was halfway up the stairs when I heard two guards talking.“…the oracle just arrived,” one said.“That means the wolf Alpha saw wasn’t just some random incident.”“What if what happened ten years ago repeats itself?”Ten years ago. Kieran’s family...The Oracle? My heart jumped. I know Oracles never left their keep except during sacred ceremonies or when the Moon Goddess had a message or when something serious was happen
Elara’s POVKieran’s room was very different from mine—or should I say, the one he gave me. It was much warmer in here. A big fireplace crackled in the center of the room, filling the space with a comforting heat. His scent was everywhere—that rich mix of amber and wood. The room was huge, easily three times the size of mine, but befitting of an alpha. Soft, dark fabrics draped the walls, thick and luxurious. There were leather chairs by the fireplace, a massive desk, and bookshelves lined with old, worn books. Everything was dark, clean, expensive. No clutter, just perfect. The lighting was soft, golden, like it knew exactly how to set the mood. The bed was huge, made up with dark sheets, and… a spot next to him on the bed was open… like it had always been mine."Do you want to shower? Or did you do that already?" Kieran asked, his voice pulling me from the moment."I showered already," I replied through the link."Okay, but I don't think you'll be comfortable sleeping in those clo
Kieran's POV I heard the door creak open. It was the same sound Elara made whenever she came back after training. I’d gotten used to it by now—her quiet, steady footsteps, the soft shuffle of her clothes, the small sigh she always let out when she entered the packhouse. It was a familiar sound, one that told me she was back.I didn’t think much of it at first. She was just settling back in after training, probably needing some time to herself. The minutes passed, and I got back to work, my thoughts on the pack, on the tasks at hand. Time slipped by—an hour, maybe two.But then, the door creaked open again, much later than usual. This time, she was leaving.I didn’t even hear her footsteps anymore. The packhouse was eerily quiet. I glanced up at the clock—an hour and a half had passed since I’d last heard her. My heart skipped a beat. Something wasn’t right. The weight of silence in the house was suffocating. My mind, usually calm, now swirled with unease. I tried to push the thoughts
Elara’s POV“Again.”Astrid tossed me a dagger and smirked like she was enjoying this way too much.“I swear, you’re not normal,” she said. “You were flailing last week and now you’re flipping midair like you trained with the Moon Guard.”I shrugged. Nyx was pacing in my head, smug.“Don’t look at me like that,” Astrid warned. “We’re not done.”We weren’t. We’d been at it since dawn, and my limbs were jelly, but the second I saw movement at the edge of the field, everything sharpened.Kieran.He was standing near the training ground, arms crossed, eyes locked on me. He looked tense, but not in the usual way an Alpha would be.–more like his insides were screaming.“Focus, Luna,” Astrid teased, spinning her blade. “Unless you want me to kick your ass in front of your very emotionally constipated mate.”I rolled my eyes and lunged. We sparred for another half hour. My moves felt faster, sharper. Like my body had been waiting to be pushed this hard. Nyx was fully awake now, nudging me, f
Tobias’ POVI wake up at 5 a.m. every day, no alarm needed. My body’s been trained to rise with the sun—or before it. Discipline has always been easier than sleep, especially lately.I stretch and loosen up before heading to the simple gym behind my house. It was basic—just some weights, a punching bag, and enough room to work out. I spend an hour lifting and boxing before hitting the road.I run—long laps along the southern border, my usual route. Minimum five miles. It keeps my wolf calm and my mind sharper than my mouth, which, frankly, says a lot.Afterwards, I shower, hit the kitchen and make breakfast. Scrambled eggs, toast, and a coffee strong enough to raise the dead. I cook myself. Always have. I like eating alone. No noise, no conversation, just me and the silence. That’s my routine—quiet, clean, and predictable. Then I go see Kieran.Kieran and I… we used to be close. Practically brothers back when things were simpler, when the world didn’t hurt as much. After he lost his
Elara’s POVI don’t know when it started—maybe the second my body hit the floor protecting him. Maybe the moment he realized I was willing to die for him. Either way, something shifted. Kieran changed. At first, I thought it was guilt. He never came near the room for days after the attack, and I've been in the room for days waiting for him, asking for him, but by the third day of stiff silence and excuses from Tobias like “He’s training” or “He's in a meeting” I got the message loud and clear. He was pushing me away. And the worst part? I had no idea why.Instead, he built walls. Cold, silent ones.I tried reaching him through the link, but he kept shutting me out. Nyx couldn’t reach Fenrir too. I was much stronger now and I was tired of waiting for him to come talk to me.“Go to his office,” Nyx said. “If he's not coming to the room and is purposely shutting us out, we deserve to know why.” I made my way to his office that night. I knocked and heard no sound but I could feel him in
Kieran's POVI didn't even notice when morning came. All night, I'd been hunched over the desk, drawing and redrawing war strategies, scanning the map over and over, until the lines blurred, plotting every possible weak point of attack. I needed to find a way to end this. End Magnus. He took my parents and sister.I won't let him take Elara too–Never.A knock broke through my thoughts. Tobias stepped into the room.“Fuck, Kieran! Why do you look like that?” He rushed over, eyes wide, and pressed a hand to my forehead.I swatted his hand away, jaw tight. “I'm fine. What do you have for me?”He paused, watching me too carefully. “Alex caught a wolf trying to escape this morning.”I snapped my head up so fast, that the room tilted slightly, and Tobias instinctively reached out to steady me. I shoved his hand away again. “Where's he?”“We took him to the dungeon.”“Let's go.”There was no time to waste. We reached the dungeon, and the thick stench of blood slammed into my senses. It was
Kieran’s POVEverything slowed, she moved faster than I could react. One moment, the assassin lunged and the next, she was there. Elara’s body slammed into mine, knocking me back with more force than her small frame should’ve carried.I stumbled back, heart lurching—then I heard it—the sickening sound of metal sinking into flesh. Her flesh. My heart stopped. I stood there, paralyzed, as blood began to soak her dress.“Elara!” Her eyes locked with mine, and a tremble passed through her lips before she collapsed into my arms. She was bleeding, too fast. Her blood was on my hands. My mate—hurt, because of me. It was happening all over again, someone close to me was getting hurt because of me. Fenrir snapped. He tore out of me with a roar that shook the entire hall. I didn’t stop him. I didn’t try. I gave him the reins. Let him do what I couldn’t.The assassin never stood a chance, Fenrir ripped him apart, bone-crunching like dry wood beneath his paws, he didn’t stop and I didn’t wa
Elara's POV We bolted past the border, diving into the vast forest beyond our pack's territory. It was massive, wilder than anything we’d ever known. The trees were ancient, towering over us and whispering secrets in the wind. The scent of damp earth, pine, and wildflowers wrapped around us like a spell, entrancing us.I felt her immediately—Nyx. She surged to the surface, sharp and electric, her energy pressing against mine like a second heartbeat. She was fully awake now, exhilarated.“This,” she purred in my mind, “is why we were born to run.”Beside us, Kieran’s gait shifted—stronger, faster. Fenrir was taking the reins too. I felt him before I saw him: cool confidence, dark and primal, the kind of energy that made everything in the forest still for just a second.“You’re slow,” Fenrir taunted, his voice a low growl wrapped in amusement.Nyx snapped back, her eyes flashing with annoyance. “Want to make this fun?”“Always.”Without warning, Fenrir swerved and nudged us hard, more
Elara’s POVI woke up to a warmth. Not the kind from the blanket or the fireplace. This one was real. Solid.Kieran.I was still in his arms, tucked against his chest, my ear was right over his heart–I could hear it. Steady, calm. Like everything was okay. The room was quiet except for the soft sound of his breathing. It was… surreal. Lying here, next to him, in his bed, after everything that’s happened. And somehow, it didn’t feel wrong. It felt safe. Like something out of a dream I wasn’t ready to wake up from.I knew I couldn’t stay like this forever, but I didn’t want to move either. I didn't know how many more mornings like this I'd get. I shifted a little, careful not to wake him and slowly lifted my head. He was still asleep, arms around me, face relaxed in a way I’d never seen before. His hair was a little messy, falling over his forehead. He looked… peaceful. Like all the weight he carried was finally off his shoulders for a moment.I caught myself staring. Again.Everythin
