If death was a person, then it would definitely be him. The fun fact is, he was here…in my room.
His icy gaze penetrated through the thin covers, where I lay, pretending to be asleep. He could always go back the same way he came. I would not deliberately ask for death.
“Your lips are quivering, little girl”, his cold hands grazed my thin lips, making me jump in fright.
How did he get so close to me already? My heart flipped over a million times as I wearily stared at him, from the door where my back was glued to.
“Why so scared now?”, his voice sounded as faint as a whisper, which was more dangerous to my ears.
The pressure in the room increased the weight of the silence, crushing me from the inside out. My lips were unable to form a word, so I wisely kept my mouth shut, with my eyes still stuck on his imposing frame.
“So, I learnt of your disappearance throughout the night, until late this morning”, he made himself comfortable, leaning on the half-collapsed table beside my bed.
“What's it to you?”, My lips hastily retorted with much thought processing, only covering them in shock after the damage had already been done.
An unexpected chuckle erupted from him which made my empty stomach sink in deep regret.
“This feistiness wasn't displayed that day, little girl”, his amused tone helped me relax my nerves a little but not completely.
“What would have happened then?”, My hands slowly fell to my sides, curiously awaiting his response.
“died on the spot”, the words fell from his lips without a moment's pause.
My resigned arms slowly raised themselves back up to my shoulders, with all my guards raised up again.
“Do not make me ask again”, he continued, returning back to his dangerous aura.
“I…I…went to party by myself”, I swallowed hard, not daring to meet his eyes any longer.
“Hmmm…tell me about this little party of yours”, his intrigued tone made me frown in dissatisfaction.
“Just a regular party. I guess I got carried away in the spirit of partying”, even my irritation reflected clearly in my tone, which had slightly risen a pitch higher than normal.
“That party surely took long enough, judging from when you arrived back at the palace”, his scrutinizing gaze did not fail to leave my adamant ones, which seemed to harden at the last second.
“I am truly honored for your monitoring eyes on me. It is reassuring, for such a lowly maid like me”, my sarcastic words rolled out without a tiny flicker of remorse in my eyes.
My heart thumped loudly at his advancing shadow over my tiny frame, but I refused to show any other expression, aside from the defiant look I plastered thickly with several traces of anger on my face.
“You are not worthy”, the cold air from his lips blew on my face with as intense force as the weight of the words, landing in my ears.
“I only hope you did well to properly cover your tracks, else you will wish you never came back”,
And just like that, he had disappeared in the next blink of my eyes.
This had to be the most terrifying nightmare of my life as I remained frozen on the spot, unable to digest what had just happened.
Sowly, my face began to sour as I recalled his threats from earlier. I wasn't so sure if I would stay here anymore. At least, alive.
—------
A month had passed since the incident, with the palace slowly returning back to its normal life as well as everyone.
The palace staff like me, but in a higher rank, who had been paired up at the mating ceremony, were granted their leave to fully start their lives with their mates.
After all these years of working in the palace, I suppose it shouldn't come as a shock that I did not feel anything for the ones who left.
Well, there was Envy. A slight one.
But sadly, it seemed the moon goddess tied me to the grounds of this palace, with no plans to let me go anytime soon. Except by death, maybe.
While today was an emotional one for everyone, especially the palace staff, I roamed about the entire palace, carrying out most of their chores as strictly instructed.
It wasn't a thing to complain about anyways as it could also decide the size of my lunch, depending on my hard work. It was a win-win.
I skipped towards the almost deserted quarters of the palace with my cleaning tools and a blossoming face.
It had really been a while since I got to see her as I was never assigned here on a normal day.
“Hello mother Luna”, a grin escaped my lips before I could swallow it in.
“Hmmm look who finally came to visit”, she looked away from me in annoyance, but her grumpy face did not faze me one bit.
“This was my only chance to see you”, my pouty face moved closer to where she sat in front of her dressing mirror.
“Why are you still here anyways? I thought you would have left the palace by now…the pack, infact”, her tone switched into one of worry, making my cheeks stretch into a wider smile.
In all my years working at the palace, the mother Luna had taken interest in me not long after my arrival here.
No one knew about our relationship, most especially because I wanted to keep it that way. She has always reminded me of her offer to be her personal maid, but I refused each time.
She was like a true mother I never had.
“Who's going to take care of you if I leave?”, A mischievous glint shone in my eyes as I spoke, while she laughed at my attempt to tease her.
After soothing her nerves successfully with the little jokes I could tell, deliberately excluding the encounter between her son, Alpha Alexander and I with a guilty heart, I prepared her bath while we caught up on the times we missed.
Once she was inside the tub, I grabbed a stool from the corner, ready to listen to her entertaining stories, which she never hesitated to tell.
“Child, I have watched you grow before my very eyes. Do you not think you need to find a life outside the city of Oceania?”, her gentle motherly voice perfectly suited the atmosphere, could make one spill all you knew, if one wasn't careful.
She had that effect on people, except for me. I might have gotten used to her tricks overtime.
“There is nothing out there for me, mother. I could be killed, nothing less”, my distant eyes lowered in uncertainty of my words as it was a thought that subconsciously floated up my mind recently.
“Do not tell me you're still holding on for the Alpha. He would not even listen to me, his mother”, her expression turned ugly while she set to complain.
“No, I am not. Here is my home regardless, at least, I have protection”, My persuading voice did not seem to be working on her stoic face, bearing an uncanny resemblance to the Alpha's.
“I once thought like that too, you know. But they were the very same ones that tried to kill me”, the murderous intent from her words, would have given anybody else goosebumps by now.
“Who are they?”, My curiosity got the better part of me at this point.
“It no longer matters now. You are strong child, and you should be”, her warm hands caressed my cheeks, but the worry in her eyes didn't escape my searching gaze.
It made me wonder what it was she saw this time.
I walked past the hallways in deep thoughts, rolling my fingers around the silver pendant on my neck. It had been around my neck since I was born, and no one amongst my uncle and aunt could tell me what it meant.
Brushing aside the puzzles I couldn't solve yet, I wearily headed towards the guards quarters, scrubbing the walls and floors of every room, drowning my thoughts in the noise that came with it.
Suddenly, I felt my butt pushed with force from behind, making my head hit the wall directly.
I touched the spot which rushed out blood like a fountain, making me frightened and angry at the same time.
My blood stained face furiously turned to meet the group of guards behind me, dying from laughter at their mischief.
“Why did you do that?”, despite the brim of tears in my eyes, I refused to let them see the pain I felt.
“Because I wanted to”, the one in front arrogantly puffed out his chest towards me.
“It would have been funnier if my dick rammed through you instead”, another mockingly announced to the group, making them burst into laughter again.
A day couldn't just get by without anything like this happening. It made me clench my fists, almost tearing up from the helplessness inside of me.
My strength was no match for them, so I could only kill them with my eyes, and imagine they died from the lasers I shot through them.
I slowly gathered my tools with pursed lips, only concerned about treating the wound as soon as possible, before it got infected.
My plain expression had gradually made them lower their guards towards me, as they even made way for me to pass.
My feet stepped out with a hidden smirk they failed to notice as the long stick of mop in my hand was soon flying in the air, and hitting every one of them in their faces, wherever crucial parts I could reach.
Their painful screams riled up my excitement, seeing them inflicted with equal amounts of pain they caused me as well.
They were all werewolves, so they couldn't be down for much longer. Knowing this fully well, I abandoned my tools, sprinting towards the main quarters, with my bleeding head in my hands.
I wasn't planning to stop until I was locked up in my room, which is why I did not see him coming, and bumped into his hard chest, increasing the bleeding even more.
His neatly polished shoes made my heart skip a beat as I recognized that anywhere. Taking several steps backward, my teary eyes met his black, stern ones.
How could someone's body feel as hard as a rock? What was I even expecting? An apology?
Without a warning, my body involuntarily lunged forward, spilling out my undigested food from my bowels through my mouth.
There was no movement from him…either of us as I wiped my mouth clean with the back of my hands, only to see his face which had gone several shades darker.
Following his line of sight, I looked down at his black polished shoes, which were now victims of my sudden throw up, exuding a stinking smell, making me scrunch my nose in disgust.
“S…sorry”, I could barely even mutter, but my eyes instantly began to search for any cleaning materials, to fix up my mess.
Alpha Alexander was yet to move his body from the spot, only burning holes through my skin with his piercing eyes, while I panicked harder at the situation.
“My patience with you is running out, little girl”, his teeth gritted in frustration at the unbearable smell coming from underneath him.
My determined steps towards him, deciding to use my worn out clothes instead, now took another turn as my steps wavered sideways, falling flat to the ground in complete helplessness.
My unconscious lips thinned into a slight smile as I thought, this was finally it. Death was going to separate me from the harsh world, in a constant war between the weak and strong.
It was all I could remember happening to me, as my heavy lids soon fluttered open to the familiar walls of my room.
This was the first time I had ever fallen unconscious since my days at the palace. What could have happened to me?
Luckily and more confusing, the royal physician stood at the door frame, hesitantly announcing the Alpha's orders for me to be taken to the courtroom.
A small troop of the soldiers came into the room, roughly dragging me out, along with their malicious mutterings.
My knee was being pushed to the floor, in front of Alpha Alexander.
My eyes definitely glared at him, wondering if he still held grudges concerning his shoes.
“I warned you not to leave a trace, girl”, his calm eyes peering at me, suddenly made the fear evident in his cold eyes.
My back sat upright in that instant, worried about the threat to my life again.
“I see you
are still clueless, but…you're pregnant”, Alexander's deep voice was perfect to break the bad news as my arms weakened to my knees.
My world stopped at that very moment…
'Dear moon goddess, I had never lived my life wrong! How could this happen to me?’, Lyra inwardly wailed, staring into thin air, without blinking. Alpha Alexander's fists turned white as they clenched the arms of his chair with mixed emotions, but all screaming rage. There were no words to save herself from this mess. She deeply regretted not being the first to know about this.“Do you know the gravity of the disgrace you have caused me?”, His voice thundered uncontrollably, still echoing in her ears even after a minute had passed.“Speak up girl! You didn't strike me as a mute person the other night”, She shivered uncontrollably, with tears glistening in her eyes. Her life was already this bad, and she was going to bring a child that would meet the same fate as her? All these while, she had held resentment towards her mother for throwing her into the hands of people who did not care for her, but the realization seemed to hit her now. “I did not plan for such a mistake, my lord”,
By the time they arrived at the huge manor, the sun had begun to rise. Before she had a chance to say anything else, she was already surrounded by several maids.“They'll show you to your room now my lady”, he kissed the back of her palms with genuine affection, before leaving her gaping at his disappearing back.Soon, she was ushered into a room, almost as big as Alexander's courtroom. She could not get to see much as her torn clothes were taken off her body by the maids, brushing her skin clean in the huge bathtub. About an hour later, she was gently tapped by one of the maids, informing her that it was time to put on her clothes. Her eyes instantly cleared up, as she reluctantly got out of the bathtub with an inward sigh of regret. It took another whole hour before she could finally see her reflection in the mirror. Her lips were slightly parted open at her own self, Including the maids as well. This was the first time her fair skin shone brightly since all her years alive. The si
After consoling myself with a good cry the previous night, I felt pretty indifferent towards today. The outcome of today's events was pretty known to me already. I grew up with Athena's parents. They treated me just as the members of the pack did. They never paid any attention to me. Not even my health or feeding.I was first a maid in their home, before coming to work in the palace at a young age still. According to them, I was of no use. And they could not care about what a person like me ate.I had too much responsibility. Even though I did all the chores. Ran all the errands. Still ate just once throughout the day. It was crumbs. Scraps from the leftover food on their plate, when I washed them at night. Most times, Athena would intentionally throw the few scraps in the bin in an attempt to mock me.She would tell me to go find my parents and stop living off her family's table. One time, she pushed a plate full of food to me at night. As I did not eat throughout the day. “Here,
Time passed swiftly in the palace for me as it was already two months since the bloody incident. I lived my day half-alive these days. My overnight chores had neither stopped or reduced. I walked around the palace with swollen eyes and heavy feet. People had gotten used to the news of my pregnancy by now but still took every chance to mock me whenever I was within sight. I was grateful for my baby still alive within my stomach. It was my best friend already as I was bonding by talking and humming happily to it.The almost frequent orders to Alexandra's court had ceased since that day as “I soiled his fine carpets with my stinking blood”.I was too relieved not to go through those doors ever again. As for Athena, she had not stopped targeting me since she now fully lived at the palace. She not only ceased the privilege of my meal time, but also threw my few belongings out of the room assigned to me as a maid working in the palace. So, the cold and I became officially one. On this
The full moon sat pretty in the clear sky. Thankfully there was no sign of a storm or drop of rain. I counted my steps, kicking stones along the way. I had never run out of Crescent moon pack before. I had no idea where to go from here.I had never crossed the boundaries of the pack here. So, my excitement stretched at the thought of finally having the courage to leave here for good. Maybe I would meet a better pack.Or better still, I would mix in with the humans. I was weak down to my scent after all. This was my first page of a new life. A new beginning with my child.Birthing my child here was not a good decision after all. What would he grow up hearing about his mother? How would he be treated in the pack? I still had Alexandra, even though he had ceased to humiliate me In the last two months since the incident. Who knows what he was planning? What if he sold my baby off after it was born? And as for Athena. Watching me in misery was not enough until I was brought to her in a
Sweat trickled from my face, it freely drenched my thin layer of clothes, even flowing all the way to my feet, despite the freezing darkness. The rogue wolves had still not relented as they bared their fangs towards me with killing intent.I did not know how long I had been running. My face down to my body was decorated in mud as I had fallen in different lakes.Their hot chase increased, closely tailing behind me while I flung my legs carelessly, ignoring the thick bushes that pierced my arms and legs in the process. It was way better than being dead, afterall. We continued for a few torturous minutes as my strength finally weakened, and my tirelessly working limbs slowed gradually. My body could not obey the panic in my heart, I was too scared to look back now. The trees ahead of me blurred gradually, till I could only see sheer darkness. Yet, I forced my limbs to keep going as I could no longer control the tears. I had come too far for me to be caught by them.I used the last of
This was a supernatural moment for the both of them. Lyra, who longed for nothing but a pure, deserving and unfiltered love had just found it. It seems the moon goddess had indeed shone her light upon her brightly this time. Their eyes remained locked, as they kept unraveling the magic of the fleeting moment they just shared. It should never have to come to an end. This was the kind you grabbed with the whole of you, never letting go. Especially when it was reciprocated. While Lyra remained stuck in this feeling as the loud silence in the courtroom stunned even the guards who had brought her in with a throat clogged with their speech. As for Alpha Tristan, who was loved and respected of course, and most likely never experienced abandonment as Lyra had countlessly gone through, broke through the reverie. He was a person who always remained logical, despite the multitude of emotions at present.Straightening his back on his royal throne as he carefully observed the frail girl in fr
Her following days in the palace were very peaceful. Infact, it was anything unlike the crescent moon pack she had experienced. As much as she loved the palace interiors and the various paintings she wished so much to explore, she was too tired to abandon her bed rest. It was the first time she wasn't up and working. Her eyes shone in delight as the maids frequently took food in and out for her. Her meals were intently attended to. The tiredness of the past months weighed down on her. Her body noted the changes and adapted quickly to it. She slept when she was not eating, ate when she was not sleeping. This was her life now. The royal physicians paid close attention to her as they treated her wounds gently with Alpha Tristan at every of these occasions.“The pain would not last long, miss” one of the physicians consoled as he applied a soothing cream to her knees. That was the most serious injury as it was filled with bacterias as it reopened over and over again.Alpha Tristan hel
The air wasn't just meant for birds. The conversation drew a longer thread between them. Alpha Tristan buried himself in the pack matters and unnecessary meetings. They both still cared for each other a lot deeply. But secrets had its way of weaning distrust. Lyra had not still come to trust Alpha Tristan with her past as it truly did not matter to her. She knew about the war between both packs. It had been her lingering fear. Would his love for her be greater than a war that did not even involve her? She could not trade the love she now had for anything, but secrets. As much as he hated the Crescent moon pack, he knew he would forgive Lyra if she told him the truth. Alpha Tristan itched to hear the truth from Lyra, which was why he clearly asked to dispel his doubts. But her eyes and lips told two different tales. He was hurt. How could she not trust him till now? He was going to make her his Queen already. Alpha Tristan's bedroom was now completely abandoned. Although Lyra's nec
Their bodies glistened with sweat as Alpha Tristan lay motionlessly on her, their heavy breaths filling the room. Laura is not at all surprised by his amount of energy tonight. She willingly surrenders herself even more to him every time.He rolls off her in exhaustion, while she flashes a smile towards him.Seeing no hint of irritation or resistance from him, she knows his guard against her is completely pulled down. Drawing closer to him, she gently strokes his wood, enjoying the feel of it as it responds to her touch.“My lord”, she softly calls out while he groans in response. His eyes remain tightly shut, slipping his fingers into her hair.“There is something you must know”, her strokes increase slightly as she carefully observes his face for a reaction.“And what is that?”He was not pleased that she wanted to bring up a conversation while they were having a good time. His wood itched to ram in and out of her again.“She is from the crescent moon pack”Hearing the name from h
The eyes only speak the truth.Locky's intense scrutiny did not miss Laura's expectant gaze. He definitely knew her. Ha! Lyra had better braced herself for her arrival at the palace. Yes.. because she was not leaving here without any answers. “Why have you come, Laura?”, His lips pursed in a thin line as he waited for her response. His arms were spread over his legs which were firmly hooked to a small four-legged chair. Laura's eyes curved at him in a sly manner, before responding, “I believe you already know that, Locky”.His eyes cast downwards as he smiled faintly.Laura was, in fact, not surprised that he knew her name. She would have been surprised if he did not know her instead. Her doubts were dispelled in that moment as she now believed he was truly as good as they said.“We only see what is shown to us, Laura. We do not read minds”The slyness gradually dissipated from her eyes as she leaned forward in helpless curiosity.“What do you mean?”“You are aware of the debate
Luckily, they had sailed through the violent winds. The palace had quietened down. There was no more hushing around as everything was now clear.According to the palace maids and guards, Laura had fallen out of favor with Alpha Tristan. The maids accorded her more respect as she had successfully made their Alpha throw out the witch. Each of them looked forward to working in the kitchen as only then, they could assist her and be among the first to take in the sweet aroma of her delicacies.Lyra, on the other hand, who was more than happy to share as she was left with nothing to do the entire day, eagerly let the maids watch her as she prepared them.It should be noted that not all the palace maids and guards were happy with the changes as well. They still viewed her as a home wrecker, despite her genuine kindness. This controversy lingered amongst them, but none was bold enough to make any of their opinions visible to Lyra as they feared the Alpha's wrath.“I think this current princ
Alpha Tristan arrived at the dining room, full of smoke as he coughed violently. He walked towards Lyra as she was now the only one at the table, staring at him flatly.“Are you okay, my princess?”, His hands draped over her shoulders as he crouched down beside her, looking at her in deep concern.Lyra remained motionless and speechless as she maintained her lost gaze into an air of nothingness. Alpha Tristan was suddenly driven into panic by her unresponsiveness, and was about to shake her slightly, when she turned towards him.Their faces rubbed on each other, but this time, there were no sparks of romance or gazes filled with desire. Lyra's heartbroken eyes tore him from the insides again as he involuntarily turned towards Laura's empty chair. What had she told Lyra while he was gone? He should not have let this happen. He was too angry to stand her anymore, but what happened to protecting Lyra as well.“You have something else you're hiding, Tristan?”He snapped his neck towards
While the two lovebirds reached a common ground together, with Alpha Tristan atoning for his sins, they were unaware of just how lethal and closely the evil lurked. Lyra on the other hand, unintentionally made things a lot harder for Alpha Tristan. This was one of the things she feared. Although she was sure she had gained the respect of everyone in the palace by now, she had watched her own cousin, Athena, take her place in Alexandra's heart. She knew first hand how it felt. She could not believe that the peaceful love she now acquired held extra strings to it. Due to her mixed emotions, she had simply asked for a bit of space from Alpha Tristan that night, when he was about to skip into the covers with her. “Go to your quarters, Tristan. I want to be left alone”This statement put him into a dumbfounded state as he held the covers mid air. “What else can I do, my princess?”His voice was almost breaking, looking at her resolved expression. Had she really made up her mind to no
“My lord”, Laura barges into Alpha Tristan's study, screaming his name in extreme anxiety. He sourly frowns at her behavior as his voice subconsciously turns cold. “My lord”, She calls out again with heavy breaths, her voice almost breaking. “Why are you here, Laura?”He does not bat an eye, staring coldly at her. Her ragged breaths pause in a split second as she slightly bends backward, observing his reaction with utter confusion. He had never asked her this question as she was welcome at the palace at any time. The only thing that threatened their union was the absence of an heir. “My lord, you are not one to ask me such a question” she glared suspiciously, now believing Lyra's words from earlier. And Alpha Tristan's words were only confirming it further. “And you have never been one to barge on me!”,His voice reverberated loudly in the study, hitting the brick walls as they bounced back into her ears. She covered her ears in pain, her pupils suddenly contracting, squeezing o
A genuine friendship blossomed between the both of them. Lyra had kept down her guard, although not entirely as she was well aware of the thread that hung above them. The fact that she was indeed from the Crescent moon pack. As much as all she wanted was a pure love, where they could be whole with one another, this was a risk to her life and that of her baby's.It is not that she never tried to tell him, the times she had, the anger in his voice betrayed his gentle touches on her cheek.“My lord”“It is Tristan”“The workers might hear”“And who cares?”“I can't call you Tristan”She stubbornly folded her elbows on top of her stomach, looking away from him.“But you just did, angel”He brought her face to his, their noses lightly rubbing each other's as he laid beside her.“I did not. I only said I am not calling you Tristan”“You have said it again”He deeply smooched on her neck, making her let out a soft moan subconsciously. He suddenly stopped with his eyes laughing at her watery
