~Gemma~

I wasn’t overly alarmed. Shapeshifters had a flair for dramatics.

“Sadie! No!” Alpha Camden yelled. She sprawled halfway across the conference table before he seized her around the waist. He bound her arms behind her back with one hand. She flopped around on the table with all the grace of a beached mermaid.

“Stop! This is very unladylike!” I was embarrassed for her. She screamed at me like a rabid hyena. Not that I blamed her. I’d also be mortified by the lack of effort required to subdue me. I thought lunas were supposed to be hot shit. I shook my head.

Luna Sadie broke free and grabbed a handful of my blouse. I yelped. So what if the luna with anger issues startled me? It happened to the best of us. My nails slashed across her face in reaction. Her shrieks swallowed the silence as her skin ripped in jagged tears.

“Silver-infused nail polish, a human girl’s best friend.” I wiggled my nails as I reached for her again. Alpha Devlin wrapped his arms around me and hauled me away like I was a child throwing a tantrum. Oh sweet instant karma. It was absolutely humiliating to be neutralized so effortlessly.

“Camden! Control your luna. I’ll have her head for this. Block the exits!” Alpha Devlin ordered.

Our wolves rushed to do his bidding, cornering the three visitors and blocking any chance of escape. I shivered, feeling the answering calls of the rest of our pack members. They were coming to our aid, each and every one of them.

Our visitors had overstayed their welcome while insulting their hosts. Desperation etched on their faces as if sensing their defeat. The struggle ended before it had a chance to begin. Like I said, my pack didn’t need me for victory. I was a worthless pawn in the shapeshifter world.

Alpha Devlin leaned down to whisper in my ear. “Never worthless.”

I pinched his arm. “Stay out of my head! And let go of me.” Damn. I lost focus and allowed Alpha Devlin to worm his way inside my head. I was usually better than that. My powers had grown strong enough to keep him out. Since he turned it into a competition with his incessant testing of my barriers, the battle for my sanity continued. Speaking of sanity…

“Crap! Another freaking top ruined! Look at the holes!” I shot Luna Sadie a nasty look. You’d be surprised at the amount of collateral clothing I collected hanging out with this type of crowd.

“Are you injured, Gemma? Did she hurt you?” Alpha Devlin unbuttoned my blouse with alarming speed to assess the damage.

I slapped his hands away. “It’s all good, Alpha Devlin. See? Not a mark” I fumbled to refasten the tiny buttons. Why were there so many? It was difficult, especially when Alpha Devlin pulled me into a rib-crushing hug. “Hey! Can you just not? People are staring! And stop sniffing my hair.” Seriously, it wasn’t hair wash day.

Alpha Camden shattered our not so private interlude. “Alpha Devlin, Sadie did not mean to overreact.”

“Yes, I did!” She screeched, fighting Alpha Camden’s hold again.

“Yes, she did.” I agreed. “Gross! There is blood under my nails! For once, I’d like to have a manicure last longer than twenty-four hours.” I squirmed until Alpha Devlin released me. “Alpha Camden, I’m going to have my manicure bill sent to you. And the cost of my replacement blouse.”

“Whatever you want. Please, you can stop this.” He pleaded with his eyes.

It was sad. His eyes were cruel only moments before. “Why should I?” Still, it was important to remember your own worth around pig-headed alphas.

“Because you are human and humans want to do good.”

I laughed at his absurdity. “We aren’t diving into that topic right now. It requires a separate meeting. However, I do want her to shut up.” The frazzled luna quit her writhing thanks to me hijacking her mind. “The silence isn’t permanent. Enjoy the temporary reprieve.” From past experience, I knew my hold would last for a few minutes without further intervention.

Alpha Camden and Alpha Devlin stared each other down. Alpha Camden broke contact first. “I apologize about the misunderstanding. Human, please forgive us.”

“I have a name. And it’s a little late for pillow talk.” I put my hands on my hips.

“Gemma, show them.” Alpha Devlin spoke to me via our telepathic connection.

“Fine! To show I am the bigger person, I will heal your luna.” Alpha Camden nodded as if I needed his damn permission. Alphas in general were too tenacious for their own good. I blamed part of my motivation to heal her on Alpha Devlin. I’d do nearly anything to keep his voice out of my head. My greater motivation fueled from pure selfishness. Looking at her shredded skin began to make me queasy.

She remained motionless, watching me with wide eyes as I walked around the table. Alpha Camden pulled her in an upright position. In her heels, she towered over me by a few inches. Wow. Luna Sadie truly stunned with her dark hair and blue eyes. The red lipstick added a touch of drama. Her personality rounded out the unstable but lovely package.

I cupped her flayed cheek and whispered, “Moon Goddess, heal your daughter.” Beneath my hand, the torn flesh mended. Yeah. That never failed to both impress and disturb.

I patted her flawless skin. “All better. Listen, girl to girl, I understand your internal angst. I wouldn’t worry your pretty head over it. Alpha Camden is bound to grow tired of his younger human lover soon.” A tear trickled down her face. My thumb whisked it away. “Trust me. They all do.”

Alpha Camden’s face bloomed bright red. “Do you have any idea what you have done?”

“What I have done? Trick question or are you expecting an answer? The goddess flows through me, in every fiber of my cursed being. The question is, do you have any idea what I am capable of doing? As for your luna, you molded her. She is the product of your actions. Alpha Camden, what have you done?”

I held up a hand when he opened his mouth. His anger radiated in a tangible aura. “Obviously the question is rhetorical. I know about the scheming, backstabbing, and let us not forget all the infidelities.” Alphas thought they have the freedom to mate with all the partners their dicks desired. Got the message crystal clear. It was the main reason I avoided the trappings of Alpha Devlin’s considerable charms. Fool me once…

“Shut your mouth stupid bitch!”

Alpha Devlin growled his displeasure. “Alpha Camden, I will remind you once to mind your manners. Nobody talks to my pack like that.”

Alpha Camden shoved his luna aside. He grabbed me by the throat and slammed me against the wall. “Do you really think you could save her in time?”

I ignored the snarling and furniture crashing behind us. “It’s okay, Alpha Devlin. I don’t need saving.” I grabbed Alpha Camden’s wrist and winked at him. “I like it on the rough side.”

“Your eyes. They are glowing.” Alpha Camden released me. His mouth fell open in horror.

I often had that effect on the male gender. What was a girl to do? My eyes tended to shine blue whenever the goddess came out to play, usually but not always. Nothing about the Moon Goddess was predictable. Something about my psychic abilities allowed the goddess to invade my mind and take the wheel. Mostly, she remained a passenger along for the ride. Sometimes she shared glimpses into the past or future. Not enough to save the world, just enough to drive a sane girl batshit crazy. Except for the havoc, it was kinda fun. It was the one thing that gave me an edge over my clawed companions.

“Sadie has secrets of her own. Instead of an empty bed, she spends her nights wrapped up in warm bodies. Naughty luna!” The laughter coming out of my mouth was not entirely my own. “Wonder why there are no young in the Fallen Moon Pack? The goddess will not bless you with offspring. As long as she is unhappy with you, the pack will remain barren. Rumors are spreading. They say your pack is cursed. They say you will fade into memory.”

“It is true! You are the vessel.” Alpha Camden fell to his knees. He clutched my skirt. “Tell me what to do to appease the goddess.”

It pleasured the goddess to see him groveling at our feet. “Get your clan in order. Be the alpha you were meant to be. Honor me.”

“And my luna?”

I pulled free and walked over to the misguided luna. She flattened herself against the wall in fear. My fingers trailed along her jawline. “She is quite broken, a sad, broken doll. I could attempt to heal her.” Tears streamed down Sadie’s face, making me feel things I’d rather not.

“Please,” Alpha Camden begged.

I sighed. He treated his luna like an interchangeable commodity. He decided to care about her now? “Alpha Devlin, do I hear correctly? Is the mighty Alpha Camden of the Fallen Moon Pack begging for the assistance of a lowly human?”

Alpha Devlin frowned before speaking. “He is. Will you help them?”

Judgey bastard. “Alpha Camden literally threatened to kill me! And you want me to help them?” I mentally screeched at him.

“I would never allow Camden to hurt you.” Devlin reassured me.

“Debatable. Did you miss his hand at my throat? I know that’s going to leave a mark!”

“Gemma, I fucking hate that he put his hands on you…”

“Whatever. This conversation is to be continued.” I cut our telepathic link off. Nope. Not buying the bullshit right now.

I cleared my throat. “I do not have the stirring in my heart to help you. Apparently, my opinion matters little. My alpha and the goddess are urging me to intervene. There must be something worth saving after all.” My eyes shut. A thread of a possibility floated bright and steady in the darkness. “Ah. There is the reason.”

~Gemma~ “Well?” Alpha Devlin arched one eyebrow, impatient for my reveal. While all alphas were pushy and demanding, his affliction had to be on the extreme side. My eyes snapped open. “Well what?” “Goddess, please tell me there is something in me worth saving!” Alpha Camden groveled on his knees where he belonged. The Moon Goddess enjoyed the taste of his despair. Everyone thought the goddess must be a kind and loving entity. I knew better. In my experience, she was temperamental and egotistical as well as benevolent. In other words, the goddess’ personality was complicated. Go figure. “Not in you. In her.” I spoke in annoyance. “Sadie will carry the mate to Alpha Devlin’s son. Through our young, our packs will flourish.” The words flew out of my mouth uncensored. I blinked. Time slowed to a standstill as I witnessed glimpses into a future I did not want. I held a little boy of around three years old. He was more beautiful than I could ever imagine with a head full of dark curls

~Gemma~ Tyson patiently waited for my rant to conclude. “He is so arrogant. I mean, sure, he works under immense pressure every day. Stress doesn’t give anybody permission to be a dick. Am I right?” I hoped Tyson felt the weight of my displeasure. I deemed him guilty by association and let my wrath fall freely upon him. “I assume we are eventually going to address my issues.” He glanced at his watch with a serene expression. “You have blown twenty minutes talking about your problems.” “Somebody should to listen to my complaints and he is your brother!” “Turn the drama down a notch, love. Put away the claws.” He ran a hand through his hair. “Please accept the fact he will never allow you to escape his control.” “Claws out. Balls out.” My favorite expression lacked any conviction as I blinked away tears. “Why can’t he take a second to consider my wishes for once? ~Gemma~ “Yes. She will come home.” I squeezed Tyson’s shoulder. “Are you sure? Have you seen it?” I rubbed my eyes tiredly. “I do not need a vision to see the outcome.” “If I were waiting for you, would you come home?” He looked insecure as he waited for my reply. I wanted to comfort him. Underneath their rugged surface, most hardcore werewolves were mushy, sentimental fools. “No way!” I patted his cheek. “There are reasons I prefer cats. Dogs require too much upkeep, all the fur and slobber. Yuck.” Tyson scowled. “I hate cats. Why are you hanging out with lupines if felines are your thing?” “Good question. I wonder if the local panther pride needs a psychic.” I pretended to jot on my notepad. “I’ll check into it, maybe request a transfer.” Alpha Devlin grumbled from my desk. No. I did not find it amusing. How dare he steal my court and cast judgments on me from my throne? “Quiet, please! I cannot concentrate wi

~Gemma~ I frowned at him from across our booth. How did I end up in this situation? Right. Alpha Devlin commanded me. And when that failed, he bullied me. It paid to have strength and size on your side. My small stature let me down once again. Alpha Devlin, the lout, had a gleam of satisfaction in his eyes to match the aggravating smirk on his lips. My fingers twitched as I fantasized about grabbing a salad fork and stabbing the offending orbs out of his face. No. That did not make me sadistic, vengeful maybe but definitely not sadistic. One transformation to his wolf form and everything would magically heal. Oh, everything except for his disturbing behaviors. No helping that. “Is there something specific you wished to discuss?” After two glasses of wine, my spine still felt about as firm as Jello. “No more sleepovers with Tyson. I mean it.” I smiled, a glimmer of hope sparking in my soul. “Is that all? Easy. Done. We could have had this chat in my office.” “I also want to discus

~Alpha Devlin~ From across the booth, Gemma frowned at me. I sighed and ran a hand through my hair. She never made it easy for me. I shook off my feelings of inadequacy. I was her alpha and in control of the situation. I grinned at her. Her glare narrowed on me. “Is there something specific you wished to discuss?” I ignored the way she clung to her wine glass as if it embodied her sanity. “No more sleepovers with Tyson. I mean it.” It was a demand, actually. I resented the bond she shared with my younger brother. Sure. It may have been jealousy over her spending time freely with him while avoiding me at every turn. Her smile devastated me. I felt the unrelenting tug of my soul seeking hers. It tore me up inside that she never seemed affected by the bond I knew to be there. I took a swig of my whiskey. It was nearly impossible for werewolves to get drunk. No. It didn’t stop us from trying. I enjoyed the burn of the alcohol in my gut replacing other sensations. “Is that all? Easy. D

  • The Alpha's Obsession   8 - Anticipation

~Gemma~ I nursed my third girly alcoholic drink chasing that sweet, magical release from reality. My seat at the small table was wedged between two she-wolves, Sammie and Megan. Werewolves ran hot and I felt the heat from their bodies increase in tempo with their excitement. Yuck! "Why didn't we invite Twyla!" Macy asked in her sickly sweet tone. WTF? I was about to make some unladylike comment when I opened my mouth and nearly swallowed a feather. “Sammie! Stop swatting me in the face with your boa!” I spat out the fake feather. “Sorry, girl!” Sammie laughed, sloshing me with her drink in the process. I sighed. Don’t get me wrong. I enjoyed a good strip show. I enjoyed it a bit less on a freaking Wednesday night. Stupid ladies’ night. I had to be up at 6 a.m. in the morning to tackle my day. Damn Alpha Devlin! I blamed him for my current predicament. If not for the emotional stress he inflicted on me, Fat Kitty and I would be snuggling and watching something silly on hulu. Six o

~Sammie~ I hated Fanged, dumb vampire strip club. Although I adored Gemma, I resented being tasked with playing witch sitter. Again. Alpha Devlin ordered me to keep an eye on her. Specifically, I was not to let her out of my sight. I didn’t care if we’ve all been friends since childhood. Their twisted relationship had the whole pack on edge. He was with Twyla and others from time to time. Gemma tried her damnedest to find love with anyone else but him. Yet we all knew they still longed for each other. Stubborn jerks. I sighed and sipped on some disgusting blue concoction of mostly sugar with a touch of liquor. Werewolves couldn’t really get drunk. But hell if I didn’t try! “Sammie! Stop swatting me in the face with your boa!” Gemma grumbled. “Sorry, girl!” I laughed, accidentally sloshing her with my liquor sugar. Truth be told, I was b-o-r-e-d out of my damn mind. Gemma had a grimace on her face. She seemed to be enjoying herself just as much. Why were we in this predicament anywa

Clothing is fair game.” I fussed with removing his shirt. “So many buttons! I hate your fancy clothes.”His dark brown hair, almost black, fell in the most flattering way across his forehead. His chest, although needing a tad sun, might have been sculpted from marble. “Little dove, are you ogling me?”“Uh-huh,” I managed to form the words. I touched his chest to see if the muscles were real. You’d think I’d be over this obsession by now. I’ve seen the show before. However, it didn’t stop me from being a repeat customer.“Truly. ~Gemma~ I cuddled the crap out of a wiggly Little Zander. Yes, I was actively avoiding Rina. “Nobody understands me like you do, little dude.” I squeezed him again for the hundredth time. He stared at me with those dark, sage eyes of his. “Are you hiding out in the nursery?” I startled at the sound of the Alpha’s mocking tone. Where the hell had he come from? His hulking frame looked ominous in the cheery and bright room. “What of it? Mind your business.” He crossed those powerful arms of his across his expansive chest. “You are clinging to my son like your life depends on it. Hence, it is my business.” My shoulders hunched a little as I sat Little Zander down. When his hands immediately grabbed for me, I scooped him up again. “It’s no hope for it now, Alpha Zander. Little Z is my new bestie at the moment.” I winked at him. His sweet, cherub face smiled back at me. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Beta Solar pass by the doorway. “Hey! Beta! I could feel her hunger from out there. How could it not be choking everyone from here? We tried to find her some food super early this morning and there was nothing. She was acting weird. Weird for her.” Irina remained quiet, listening to what James said. She studied her mate and then turned to Marcus’ body. “How long until he wakes up?” I wondered. “It was only an apple.” Irina frowned at that. “He will rise when I wish him to. Is anyone offering to go retrieve her? Because I am more than capable.” I nodded my head at James. “The witch,” I began. The look on James’ face irritated me. Given the circumstances, I let it ride. “Gemma,” I corrected. “Go get her and bring

~Gemma~ Why me? Just why? I rolled over, spitting out hair stuck to my mouth. My whole body hurt, like I’d been beaten with a baseball bat. Fuck! I untangled from the bedding. Yeah. Still clothed. Thank goddess. It was ten in the morning. Great! My food hunger still raged. At least the other was nowhere to be found. The day looked bright so far. Before knocking on Rina’s door, I heard feminine moans followed by a giggle. Jeez! I called out. “Um. I hope you guys realize this room is so not sound proof! My imagination is wildly out-of-control now. Thanks for that!” Driven by desperation, I made my way back to the kitchen. Surprise, surprise. Today’s search came back fruitless. Almost. I played with the apple in my hand, debating on eating it. On one hand, it was stupid. People were starving in the world while I agonized over my lack of options. I sat in the same chair I had occupied only hours earlier. I pinpointed the exact moment when my solitude had been breached. “Well, what

I tried multiple times to contact him via mindlink to no avail for the past day. His phone number had been changed. And now he decides to call? When I’m an emotional fucking wreck? Avoiding the goddess' hungers wore me down, physically and emotionally. “Gems?” Shit! I answered. How could I not? “How’s Tyson doing? And Sam?” “Ty’s fine. Sammie is a fucking trooper. I’m convinced they only survived because of the enhanced strength the goddess bestowed upon them.” He hesitated. “Listen…” “Dev, I can’t. I need space to breathe. Let my anger simmer and then maybe I’ll be in the mood to listen.” I hissed at him. “The thing you saw with that she-wolf, it was a mistake I immediately regretted. It didn't get very far.” He went silent for a few moments. I could still hear his breathing over the line. I kept my mouth shut. Otherwise I might cause

~Gemma~ The day was a win so far. The sun glared down on us, warming the water. We met a few pack members. Everyone seemed nice and welcoming. Well, this one she-wolf gave me the stank eye. What could you expect? Rina snagged one fo their most eligible bachelors. Alpha Zander spent more time with me that was necessary. When Little Zander was carted away to take a nap, I joined Rina and her mate in the hot tub. She dangled her feet in the hot water, a towel wrapped around her shoulders. I scooted over, sitting on the opposite side to face them. “This is cozy. With all his money, the alpha couldn’t spring for a bigger hot tub?” What was that all about? When my foot accidentally touched his, I drew my legs up on the seat with me. “Sorry. Not being rude. But there is no freaking way I want any of your spillage.” I apologized. Rina giggled. “Will you help me unpack later?” I glared at her. “We packed most of that crap! I am aware how much is stuffed in those bags and suitcases.” “I

That’s greedy, alpha.” He sighed, irritation riding his voice. “Avoiding the question. Again.” I lifted one shoulder. “It’s a personality quirk. Irina and I together is a lot to handle, you brave, delusional soul. Yes, I will think about it.” “Whatever your current salary, we will double it.” “Wow. That’s a lot for a troublemaker.” His statement stunned me. “I assume you can also help out with pack matters and meetings.” “And Rina?” “As the mate to my beta, her place in the pack is secure. Now we’re getting somewhere.” I crossed my legs. “No, Alpha Zander. I did not fuck James. Not that I think it is any of your damn business.” Beta Solar entered the office. “Gemma, she is awake and asking for you.” I got up and left, making a swift exit from that troubling conversation.
