It was dark and gloomy. She could hear the rumbling thunder outside. She could smell the damp air, could hear the constant dripping of water from the leaking roof into the room where they were trapped. Why? She didn’t know. How? She didn’t know that either.

“‘Don’t hurt my daughter...don’t...please. I will...I will tell you...I….” the faceless woman pleaded as she tried to drag her blood-soaked body back until her back hit the wall. She was cradled in her arms, unable to see who it was that addressed her as their daughter. Was she her biological mother? Possibly. She peeked a look at the man who stood not too far away from them. Was it a man? Or a dog? What species was it? It was growling...it always did. Its red glowing eyes made her shudder. And then…

There was blood, dark and thick. She sat shivering in one corner of the room, trying to blend into the wall almost as she watched the c

Her eyes fluttered open to an unfamiliar room. She was familiar with this type of ceiling. She had been to this place countless times. And then everything came gushing back, making her sit up for the next moment. Red eyes….red eyes...her mind chanted and then the voice which had said her to beware of the red eyes…“Finally, you decide to grace the living world,” a timbre voice says from her right. Her gaze snapped towards its origin. Her eyes widened when she found that none other than her boss was lounging on the couch, staring at her, or rather scowling back at her. He was fully dressed in a suit now, thankfully. She swallowed nervously and averted her gaze. How on earth was she so unlucky? Just when she had thought that life was going to be mundane, she had multiple encounters with her all-too-unhappy boss and all in a span of

She heard a sharp intake of breath. She did not look up from the porcelain bowl. The white countertop made her feel dizzy before she resumed, “I don’t know much about my time at the orphanage but I can say one thing that I could live and breathe freely there. One day, I was adopted by the Whites, a childless couple who seemed to be lovable and cheerful in the beginning.” Her lips twisted slightly at the words ‘cheerful’ and ‘loveable’.She pushed back the bowl slightly and glanced at Barbara who was staring back at her. Her face was an open book, painted with a plethora of emotions. “I was taken care of initially,” she said, furrowing her eyebrows and remembering the days when they actually cared for her like parents would for a child. “But then...things started getting worse,” she continued. Summer gripped the spoon tighter. “Financially they weren’t stable and bringing me into their li

‘So she knows how to thank people, but doesn’t know how to reply back, ’ Dorian thought as he glanced at his phone which remained silent. He did not expect any reply after he sent one, yet he felt a twinge of disappointment when his phone did not light up.He tore his gaze from the unsuspecting device to his laptop screen. The emails were starting to give him a headache. He was about to type yet another response when the doorbell rang. He knew it was his beta, Kyle.“How many times did I tell you to just use the damn key,” he groused as he let him in. Kyle ambled in, two take away packets in his hand, and walked straight to his study. Dorian shook his head and closed the door. Kyle placed the takeaway packets on the desk and said sheepishly, “I keep forgetting about the key.”

The dried leaves crunched under her feet as she made her way to the office. She stifled a yawn as she trudged her way to the building. ‘I should have taken a long way,’ she thought. She couldn’t sleep properly last night. ‘I will go back to my apartment today,’ she decided as she watched her steps. “What are you doing in this area?” a gruff voice made her jump. She whirled around to find a blond man glaring at her. His eyes conveyed nothing but violence. Fear seized her body. His expression was almost familiar to that — the molester. She swallowed nervously, her throat dry. She opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out. Her eyes tracked the blond’s movements. He prowled towards her. “I asked you a question, girl. Answer me!” he boomed, making her shudder. She clenched her tremblings fists, keeping them to her side. The man snarled. What will she do? Where will she run?

Her eyes welled up as she gathered her things and turned off the computer. Why was she so unfortunate all the time? Why did she always get the short end of the stick? Why couldn’t she stand up for herself? Why was she so pitiful? She sniffled before making her way out of the building. There was a distinct ache inside her chest, a dull throbbing pain that started after she was reprimanded by her boss. She blinked away the blurriness and looked around. Why did she feel so humiliated? He was only telling the truth. By now, she was well aware of the fact that he was neither lenient nor forgiving. However, he let her off the hook this time as well. She screwed her eyes shut, her cheeks heating up with embarrassment. All of a sudden, she tripped. She opened her eyes and instantly felt stupid for having closed it earlier. She let out a shuddering breath and started walking again. Melham was a small town, which is why the streets nearly became deserted by 8. Two years ago, she would

She had an uncanny feeling, a feeling that she was quite familiar with. She quickened her pace as her ears picked up the sound of footsteps. In an otherwise empty alley, she was certain that someone was following her. Why did she decide to go shopping at this time, again? She clutched the packet tightly as she walked, not daring to look back. She felt like a live wire, her nerves buzzing. Her heartbeat was rabbit-fast and the sense of impending danger intensified, and before she knew it, a hand was grabbing her forearm and turning her towards them. A garbled scream ripped out of her mouth as fear seized her senses. “Where are you running?” a gruff voice leered. Summer’s eyes had screwed shut. She peeked a look and her breath hitched when she spotted the gleam of pointy canines. She struggled to free herself from his hold. “Please,” she whimpered.

Dorian let out an aggravated sigh as he watched Summer leave. He knew she would do so, and even though he wanted to make her stay, Kai advised him not to force her, “Should we follow?” Kai asked hopefully. Dorian dragged his palm across his face and grabbed his keys before leaving the room. It was ironic how he kept wanting her to stay safe, but not acknowledging her as his mate. On his way out, he called Kyle. The beta answered groggily. “Ask Ronan to check the CCTV footage of the alleys near H Mart.” He ended the call without waiting for his reply. In his territory, he rarely heard cases of women being assaulted. It used to happen before he had succeeded as the alpha of his pack, which is why his father had CCTVs installed at various alleys and nooks. He had to deal with that employee of his and now this pointy teeth guy.B

She could feel the beginnings of a headache that would definitely stay with her throughout the day. Barbara placed a cup of Chamomile tea in front of her and sat beside her, silent and brooding. Liam was still resting, his injury healing slowly. Summer cradled the cup in her hands before taking a small sip. The warm, mellow yet sweet taste was pleasant. The vintage clock in the living room showed that Summer needed to get going or she would be late, but for once she wanted to be late. She didn’t feel like facing anyone, especially not her boss. Beside her, Barbara quietly flipped through a magazine. After the breakdown, she didn’t question her further, letting Summer take her time. She wasn’t ready yet, but she would definitely tell her someday. Once she finished her tea, she moved to stand up. “I’ll be driving you today,” the older lady announced, standing up as well. Summer gripped the handle of h

~2 years later~ Serena’s eyes brimmed with tears, not because of sadness but out of happiness. The little bundle of joy, the one she had carried for the past nine months stared back at her with guileless golden eyes. All the exhaustion, the tears and mood changes, everything was worth it. When she conceived, she had already become protective, but now as she held the little one in her arms; she felt she would do anything for her. “Isn’t she beautiful?” Dorian whispered, his voice hoarse with strained emotions as he pulled her closer to him. Serena blinked back to the present and nodded, unable to utter even a single word. Her throat closed up as the bay made soft sounds as she rocked her gently. 4 years had passed in the blink of an eye and now as Serena stared at their daughter, she couldn’t h

Serena could feel her heart constrict. She felt like she couldn’t breathe. She distantly heard someone shouting, then someone grabbing her arm because she was swaying on her feet. Her vision had become dim. Black spots danced at the edges of her eyes. Her eyes stung as she breathed through her mouth. Why would…why would he leave? Again? Was she being rejected? She couldn’t even feel his emotions strongly. They were so faint. She blinked furiously, hardly realizing that she was crying. Someone held her close to them, caressed her hair and shushed her. But her sobs suddenly seemed uncontrollable. She was trembling and then she felt a pinprick and before she knew it, her head had lolled to one side. ~~~~~~ Dorian hadn’t expected that his stepping out and going for a run to c

The next day, Alexander King came to visit his grandson in the morning. The old man paused outside the cabin and stared at Dorian through the rectangular glass on the door. He firmed his grasp around the cane and composed himself so that his grandson wouldn’t get a glimpse of his fear, of the terrible feeling of hopelessness he had experienced when Dorian didn’t wake up. He clutched the bent wooden head of the cane tightly to stop the quivering of his fingers. He pushed the door open and walked in. Dorian opened his eyes as soon as Alexander stepped in. Ronan stood up from the couch and bowed. Kyle was yet to arrive and take the former’s post. The beta was juggling between the pack and the company. “I will let you both talk,” Ronan said respectfully before leaving. Dorian sat up.

“How are you feeling?” Serena turned her head to look at Viviane. Her gaze was nothing but sympathetic. She bustled around a bit before helping her to sit up. She didn’t know how to explain what she felt. She was glad but that emotion seemed hollow. She felt a strange emptiness in her heart, a sickening satisfaction at having killed Yvonne and…“How’s Dorian?” she asked instead. Her voice came out raspy. Viviane held a cup in front of her mouth with a straw. She took slow sips before pushing the cup away.Vivane placed the cup on a nearby table and said, “He is fine. Exhausted but he is resting and…” Serena read her silence.“He knows.” It wasn’t a question. She let out a shuddering b

Serena opened her eyes to the same terrain, on the muddy grass where she often finds herself. She felt that her head was on someone’s lap. There was no pain or exhaustion as she sat up, taking in the calmness. The cliff did not look so threatening, and neither did the sea feel tumultuous. It was unnerving to some extent. “You are wondering why everything is so quiet today, aren't you?” Serena turned quickly to see her mother smiling at her, but there was a hint of ruefulness in that smile and a tinge of sadness in her gaze. “Mom..” she whispered before rushing towards her, even though she half-expected to feel her warmth but was pleasantly surprised to feel her mother’s arms envelope hers, pulling her into a hug that she often missed since she lost her.

[warning: mild gore] Dorian did not really feel the hit. His brain took a second to decipher, and Kai’s roar followed after that. One moment he was trying to break Barbara and Liam free from the binds, and the next moment he felt his entire body become immobile. He could hear Serena’s shout and Barbara’s scream but his vision was turning hazy and before he knew it he fell on the ground in a heap, like a dead weight. ~~~~~~ All the visions that she had seen played in her mind in a nightmarish loop. Was this what it meant? Was this how this would end? Serena refused to believe this. She scrambled towards his prone form, every other thought leaving her mind. “Dorian…” she gasped, his name a litany on her lips as she felt the pain that her mate might be feeling twice more than her. She looked up to see Dorian, shaking his head subtly. “Listen to your mate, Miss Viotto. I wouldn’t want to harm someone close to my son after all,” she said tauntingly, making Serena angrier. She suddenly regretted bringing the book with her. It felt as if she had walked right into the trap. She clutched her tote bag tightly. “I don’t need his permission. The fact that he is stopping me because he knows what i am capable of,” she retorted and was thankful for the snarkiness in her tone. Yvonne’s face darkened before she began to walk towards her. Serena rushed to her father who collapsed on the floor as soon as Jordan let him go. Jordan watched the reunion with baleful eyes before his gaze settled on Dorian who was staring back at him with open hostility. The Alpha King’s gaze flickered to the former Fae King momentarily before they went back up and remained settled on Jordan. “What happened? Are you…are you hurt? Oh my gosh, what happened to your wings?” Serena bombarded the two fae men with question after question as she continued inspecting her wounded father. Vulcan felt too tired to speak, the teleportation having taken much energy away from him than he had fathomed. “I think we should move him to the guest room. I’ll call Viviane.” Dorian proposed. Jordan who had been silent until now murmured his assent. Dorian helped Jordan to pull Vulcan up and practically dragged him to the room because the older man was in no condition to walk, even with help. She could hear the high tides, she could hear their impatience. The rune of Nauthiz (ᚾ) hovers and disappears. She doesn't know what to make of it. It’s the rune of need, urgency, but also conveys the acceptance of the unchangeable. Did that mean…? Her eyes closed for a moment, as she tried to gather enough courage to say the next words. But those words didn’t leave her mouth for when she opened her eyes, Vulcan was lying still, a garbled groan came out of his lips. A sob esca
