Kathleen’s POV

As I prepared for school, I noticed Alpha Lance's shirt hanging in my closet, prompting a smile to creep onto my face. After all, why shouldn't I smile?

Although what transpired between us is something I highly doubt would repeat itself, at least it happened once, right?

However, I couldn't shake the nagging feeling of confusion. What exactly was going through his mind? ? It all seemed so out of character, so weird, to be honest. He saw me and decided to bring me to his home, why? Even if he were interested in someone, or wanted a whore to pick, I would likely be the last person on his radar among the countless options available to him, that's if he even gets to see me because I'm teeny little. Nothing but an invisible presence.

I'm not deserving of such attention.

The whole situation suddenly felt odd.

Or perhaps I'm underestimating my own beauty?

As I gazed at my reflection in the mirror, with my hair hastily pulled back into a ponytail, wearing a slightly oversized shirt and jean cargo pants, I couldn't help but shake my head in disbelief. No way!

Who am I trying to fool?

I don't even possess a damn wolf.

My brow furrowed in perplexity as his words echoed in my mind, asserting that I belonged to him. What on earth did that imply? I wasn't his mate, and the only plausible reason for such a declaration would be if I were.

Oh, goddess, could it be true?

A gasp escaped me at the mere notion.

It would certainly offer an explanation. I've never considered myself particularly attractive, and I lack a wolf companion, so why would he single me out? It would explain the pull! Oh, moon goddess!!

This is… surreal!

A chuckle bubbled up from within me, and I eagerly descended the stairs, my heart aflutter with anticipation. I couldn't wait to get to school, I might meet him there.

“Wait, Mom…” My excitement faltered as I entered the kitchen, finding my mother engrossed in her cooking tasks, the aroma of waffles filling the air.

I couldn't help but feel crestfallen as I observed only two plates being set on the dining table. "Just two? Isn't Dad joining us for breakfast?"

My mother heaved a weary sigh, and I sensed that something was amiss. She didn't need to verbalize it; I already knew.

“He couldn't stay?” I inquired, a tinge of disappointment coloring my tone. “Why couldn't he spare a few moments or wake me up? Or don't tell me he left last night?”

She shook her head, her expression grave as she replied, “No, he left early this morning. He mentioned he had to leave to maintain his cover. You know how seriously he takes his responsibilities…”

“Yes. Yes, Mom, I'm aware. It's a level of seriousness that's a bit overwhelming for my taste,” I remarked, shaking my head as I settled into my seat at the table, hastily grabbing a waffle and shoving it in my mouth.

“However, your dad did mention something before he departed,” she continued, taking a seat opposite me. I raised an eyebrow inquisitively.

“Something? What did he say?” I inquired.

“Are you involved with Alpha Lance in any way?” she suddenly asked, causing my heart to skip a beat.

How did she know that?

“Oh, dear, your heart just betrayed you,” she remarked, her expression concerned as she observed my rapid heartbeat.

I chuckled awkwardly, attempting to dispel the shock that had seized me, before responding, “Oh, come on, Mom! Me, having anything to do with Alpha Lance?! It's like a tale from an alternate dimension?! Look at me, Mom, I don't even have a close to teeny chance with the guy, I'd be dreaming?! Where did Dad get something that absurd from!” I laughed, shaking my head incredulously as I shoved another waffle into my mouth, chewing vigorously.

“Slow down or you'll choke, Kath. Your dad was just curious. But if there's any truth to it, make sure you steer clear of any involvement with the Alpha's family. Besides your dad's work, it's best if we keep our distance from them,” my mom cautioned, digging into her own meal.

I swallowed my food hard, gulped down a mouthful of water and turned to my mom, a mixture of curiosity and disappointment swirling within me.

Unfortunately, she had no answers to give.

While in class, there was only one person I could talk to. “I can't wrap my head around it, Maggie! I scored a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity with Alpha Lance, something unimaginable, and now my parents are telling me to steer clear? What world do they think I'm living in?”

“You can't wrap your head around it?” Maggie, seated beside me, couldn't contain her laughter. "Are you serious? I still can't wrap my head around the fact that you actually got involved with Alpha Lance,” She whispered.

With a confident smirk, I nodded. "Believe it or not, it happened. His lips were on my breasts, I felt it. We shared a passionate kiss. There's no way that was just a dream. I even have his shirt as a keepsake."

Maggie gasped in shock. "Holy fuck, this is insane, girl! You know, when they say miracles happen, I never thought I'd see one unfold before my eyes! Why do you think he chose you?"

Shrugging, I replied nonchalantly, “Beats me,” I had a wild theory, but it sounded too outrageous to voice aloud.

Even if Maggie were my closest friend, she wouldn't believe me. She’d probably think I'm batshit crazy if I told her I believed Alpha Lance could be my mate

"Out of the way!" A sharp command cut through the classroom, drawing my attention to the entrance where Melody barged in

And where there's Melody, there's also Lyra and Rhea.

Knowing their presence usually spelled trouble, I instinctively buried my nose deeper into my book, hoping to avoid any confrontation.

"Hello, Kathleen Callahan," Lyra's voice broke through my concentration, forcing me to look up at the trio standing before me, their expressions dripping with sass and irritation.

Lyra, in particular, the girl radiated anger, her demeanor intense and unwelcoming.

“What can I do for you?" I inquired, trying to maintain a semblance of composure.

“Oh, plenty, Kathleen. First and foremost, I need you to steer clear of my mate. Yes, you heard that correctly—Alpha Lancelot Vance is my mate!”
