Xavier's POV

The silence in my study felt unnatural, squeezing against me as I replayed the event of the night in my mind. The rogue wolf's intrusion into my territory was definitely not a coincidence. It had been too determined, his movement was too exact. He hadn't intruded into my territory by some coincidence — somebody had sent him. But why? And most importantly who?

I sat in my study, leaning back on my seat as I thought about it, trying to make sense of it. The weak fragrance of debris blood still lingered on the air, an indication of the intruder's short presence and the battle that followed. My wolf stirred restlessly inside me, my senses at its peak.

My gaze tumbled to the silver locket lying on the desk before me. It looked like an ordinary locket, however I wasn't tricked. I'd taken it from Hazel last night before the intrusion. She had grasped it firmly, as though it were her life, and the look in her eyes when I'd pulled it from her hold still haunted me.

That wasn't simply an ordinary locket. It was something more.

I allowed my fingers to brush against the smooth surface of the locket. The second, I touched it, a glow spread through my palm, the locket was burning up again. A weak murmur exuded from it, vibrating against my skin.

"What on earth are you?" I mumbled, scowling as I turned the locket over in my hand. I opened it again to look at the faces of Hazel's parents staring at me. I closed it again and looked at the carvings on it. I couldn't read the lettering on it. It seemed to be written in a different language I'm not familiar with.

The intensity of the humming increased, and briefly, I assumed I heard a murmur. It was weak, indistinct, similar to the stir of leaves in the breeze.

Suddenly, a knock at the door broke my thoughts. I was at first startled, my fingers gripped on the locket before I pushed it into the cabinet and closed it.

"Enter," I growled, my tone harder than I intended.

Kael came inside. My Beta was a man of few words, however his sharp eyes didn't miss anything. His look swept over the room, gazing on the desk for a while before his eyes went to the cabinet.

"You called for me?" he asked, his voice quiet.

"I did," I said, standing and crossing the space to put a few distance between me and the cabinet. "There's work to be done."

Kael paused, arms crossed over his chest, his foreheads wrinkled with expectations.

"To start with, I want you to track down the witch, I need to see her." I said, my tone curt.

Kael's foreheads wrinkled. "The witch? Why?"

I dismissed his questions as I gazed through the window. "Just track her down and bring her here."

He let out a deep sigh. "You won't tell me why?"

"No, you don't need to know." My voice was firm, ruling out contention.

Kael mumbled something faintly that I didn't get.

"There's something else, I need you to do," I said, turning around to face him. "Assemble a meeting of the elders. I need their bits of wisdom on this rogue wolf's intrusion."

Kael shifted his head. "You think this was not an ordinary assault."

"I don't think so," I said, my voice cold. "I know. Somebody sent him, and I meant to figure out who."

"We searched his body last night before burning him but we couldn't find anything" he said.

"He didn't just wander into my territory. I have to find out why and who sent him" I said firmly.

Kael gestured, his expression turning serious. "What about Hazel?" he asked after pausing for a moment. "What punishment do you intend to give her for breaking the curfew last night?"

At the mention of her name, a pressure I hadn't understood I was holding, wound more tight in my chest. Hazel had defied the rules I had set up for the wellbeing of the pack. However, in spite of her defiance, there was something about her I was unable to overlook.

"Marianna will be sent off the southern pack house," I said, purposely directing the discussion away from Hazel. "She'll learn real discipline there."

"Concerning Hazel… " I wavered, the words caught in my throat. "She remains here. Under my watch."

Kael's grin was replaced by a suspicious look. "Your watch?"

"Yes, she remains here right where I can see her," I said, my voice ruling out any form of argument.

His look lingered on me, as though he were trying to read my thoughts. But, whatever questions he had, he remained quiet about them. "Okay, if that's what you want," he said, however his tone shows he wasn't completely persuaded.

"Is that all?"

"Yes, for now," I said, excusing him with a gesture.

He left without another word, the door clicking shut behind him.

The silence returned, heavier than before. I rested up against the edge of my desk, thinking about the locket. Pulling it from the cabinet, I held it up to the light. The glow returned in a flash, more intense than before.

Once more, the murmurs returned, faint yet persistent. I held it to my ears and listened, it's like a voice calling out to me. My wolf growled, pacing anxiously in my subconscious.

Suddenly, an unexpected flood of trouble hit me like an actual blow. I staggered, grasping the desk for help as my breath hitched. The sensation was sharp, overpowering, similar to hooks raking through my chest.

"Hazel," I murmured, the name getting away from my lips without thought.

She's in distress.

I didn't have the slightest idea how I knew, yet I was sure it was her. Her distress resembled a string woven into mine, pulling tight and refusing to give up.

The locket in my grasp started to vibrate, its murmur becoming stronger. The intensity burned my palm. The weak sparkle returned, more brilliant this time, enlightening the room with a supernatural light.

"What's going on?" I mumbled, alarm crawling into my voice.

The light erupted, a sharp light that made my vision obscure. My wolf growled, conflicted between needing to safeguard and withdraw.

Then as suddenly as it began, the light blurred and faded, I stood there with the locket grasped firmly in my hands.

I continued staring at the locket for a long time. There is no doubt that this thing was atta

ched to Hazel in manners I don't yet understand. I'll find out, no matter what it cost me.

"What's going on, mom?" She hurriedly put my clothes into a small bag. Why are we packing? “We have to go?“ She didn’t bother responding to my questions. “What about Dad?“ I asked, but no answer followed; she was so focused on packing our things as quickly as possible. I still found it difficult to process what was happening but joined her regardless. I have never seen her panic this way before, so it has to be urgent. Just as we were about to leave, a knock was heard from the front door. Xavier's POVI slowly opened my eyes, feeling tired after a long period of inactivity in hibernation. A joint cracking sound echoed as I stretched my muscles, shaking off lingering sleep and tiredness. I stood up, conducting a general check on my body. My tall, masculine physique commanded respect, striking fear into less confident males and captivating ladies. My gray eyes sparkled as I stroked my hair, thoughts flooding my mind. The Alpha crowning ceremony, scheduled for tomorrow, dominated my thoughts.I surveyed my surroundings, stepping out of my chair. The scent of damp earth and wildflowers filled my nostrils, stirring my senses. Power and dominance coursed through my veins.Too much of a ritual for six months... I wonder how the pack is doing now; in any case, we were still in safe hands prior to hibernation. "Kael!” I growled, my voice still husky from the long sleep. Hazel's POVThe iron bars of the cell rattled as they dragged me roughly from the cold stoned floor. My wrists ached from the tight cuffs they had worn on my hands, the metal biting and tugging into my skin. I stumbled, catching myself against the wall, heart pounding with a mix of fear and anger at the same time.Get moving,” one of the guards barked, shoving me forward. I shot a defiant glare at him, but it didn't do so much as a sinister laughter followed. It was almost as if they enjoyed my helplessness, a traitor’s daughter in their grip under their absolute mercy.“Please listen to me. I didn't do anything. Francis was my mate. How could I kill him? I didn't do it. Someone must have set me up. Please listen to me." I begged uncontrollably, hopeful for at least some kind of sympathy.“Just give me a chance to prove to you that I'm telling the truth, please,” I cried. He raised an eyebrow, amused. “You think you deserve a say in this? You’re the daughter of traitors.”Daughter o

Xavier's POVThe sun hung low in the sky, casting it's shadows across the forest ground. I could feel the anticipation building in the air; the coronation was more than just a ritual—it was meant to be a display of power."Kael, gather the warriors and prepare for the gathering at Coldfire Forest," I commanded. The Coldfire Forest was a sacred place, the ground where all previous leaders were crown alpha and matched with their mate. It was the perfect place for my ascension as Alpha.“Yes, Alpha,” Kael replied with a bow before turning to leave. “One more thing,” I said, stopping him in his tracks. “make sure everyone is present, including the girl.”Kael’s eyes widened, he was about to protest but stopped. He knew better than to question me. With a final bow, he left. The whispers of the pack echoed in the forest—murmurs about the traitors, the murdered high standing officials, and the daughter left behind. Hazel Myelin. Hazel's POV I froze at the spot, my heart thumping fast. I couldn't tear my eyes away from his intense gaze. His silver-grey eyes held something that I didn't understand. Is it anger... or is it hunger? Seeing him on the royal platform with the crown, I already know who he is. Our new Alpha Xavier Dyon of the Golden Dawn pack. His presence held the power that I could feel even from the distance that separated us.I've heard rumors about his viciousness and ruthlessness in battle and how little he tolerated traitors and criminals. Even as the late Alpha's son, he has much more blood on his hands than all the Alphas of the other packs put together, as he never hesitates to eliminate anyone who commits any crime in the pack. His masculine, intimidating body build holds an authority that causes all the betas, omegas, and even Alphas from other packs to tremble at his presence. His cold grey eyes give people chills as they hold no expression of his thoughts. As I looked at him again, I

Hazel's POV I trembled in fear as he came near to me, his steps slow and precise. My heart thumps painfully fast in my chest as I await my judgment. This is the end! Is this how I'm going to die? The Alpha passing his judgment directly on me is too much for me to bear. I remembered the stories I heard of the gruesome ways he eliminates traitors in the pack. The horror stories that spread across the pack came rushing back. Alpha Xavier had once sentenced a traitor to a slow, painful death back when he was just the Alpha's son. The wolf has been torn apart, limb from limb. His carcass was left to rot in the forest as a warning to others. As he stood in front of me, I could feel his Alpha energy radiating from his body. It was so strong that it weakened me. I remained on my knees with my head bent to the earth in submission. I squeezed my eyes shut as I expected the worst. I stiffened as I awaited the judgment that he would pass unto me. I pray that he grants me a merciful death that

I hadn't ordered the curfew for nothing. I had gotten information from my most trusted source that a spy was in our midst. I had planned a patrol with Kael to catch the culprit and here she was--the daughter of traitors lurking around in the midnight, holding her parents' locket. I flipped open the locket again and turned it over. It looks old and rusty, except for the pictures of the traitors looking back at me, it seems like an ordinary locket but something tells me otherwise. "Should I ask Kael to post extra guards outside her room?" Beta Marcus said as he emerged out of the shadows. "That won't be necessary.
