Hazel's POV
I couldn't go back to sleep. I thought about how Alpha Xavier almost strangled me earlier. I rubbed my neck again, still feeling the strain of his powerful grip around my neck.
Why did he act that way?
One moment, he was kind and the next moment he was cruel.
I remembered how he caressed my face when I woke up from the nightmare. His eyes were full with concern and his soft and tender touch caused my heart to falter.
Then his eyes went cold and he strangled me almost to death.
Is he eccentric? Or is it something darker in play here?
Did he really plan on killing me?
I shivered at the thought, pulling up the blanket up to my chin.
He had already pronounced me as his mate but I still don't know if he really accepts me or not.
Does he feel the mate bond too like I do or am I the only one who felt it?
Did he pronounce me as his mate just to save my life?
Unable to sleep, I kept thinking about him till dawn break.
*******
In the morning, Marianna knocked the door and entering, she pulled open the curtain. I hid my face from the brightness of the light and groaned.
"It's time to wake up dear" she said, coming to sit at the edge of my bed.
She gasped when she saw my puffy eyes.
“Did you sleep at all? Look at your swollen eyes” she said, a look of concern spreading across her face.
“What happened?” she asked, sitting beside me.
I couldn't tell her how the Alpha almost killed me last night. She might not believe me, even I still find it hard to believe.
“It's nothing” I lied, yawning and stretching my body.
“If there's anything bothering you, know that you can trust me” she said, her eyes warm with kindness.
I battled with whether to tell her or not but I decided not to.
She observed my bruises and the cuts on my knees.
"Your wound is healing fast," she said with an approving smile on her face.
"It's time to take a bath, Hazel,"she said, lifting my greasy hair with a grimace.
"You really need it," she added.
She led me down to the bathroom to get myself cleaned. The warm water feels like heaven. I've not had a chance to take a bath throughout my stay in the dungeon. I relished this moment of water dripping on my thirty skin. My body loves it except that the bruises and cuts in my body stings in protest but I didn't care. I took my time washing my greasy white mane and then washing my dirty white skin.
I felt lighter and much more alive. After a long while, I finished taking my bath and stepped out of the bath. Marianna was waiting for me at the entrance of the bathroom.
"You look more beautiful now, who could say that your hair was actually white." she said, a teasing smile on her face.
I smiled shyly, I haven't smiled for a long time now.
She handed me a warm towel to cover myself and led me back to my room.
I remembered yesterday's dinner and my stomach growled. I wonder what I'll be given as breakfast, I salivated as I remembered the roasted meat and freshly baked bread.
"Let's apply medicine on your wounds. Its healing fast at this rate" Mariana interrupted my thoughts.
I flinched as she took the balm in her hands.
"Don't worry, it won't sting too much this time" she said and I looked at her with disbelief.
She applied the balms on my wounds, it didn't hurt like yesterday but it hurt enough for me to shrink back at the sting.
"It's okay dear," she said soothingly.
She cast a dissatisfied look at my torn dress at the corner of the room.
"I'll get you something to wear "she said, picking up the torn dress and leaving.
After a while, she's back with a pink cotton dress. I was already feeling cold, so I hurried into it and the warm comfort I felt was amazing.
"You can rest for a while, I'll get you something to eat," she said, stroking my silver white hair gently.
The breakfast was as wonderful as yesterday's dinner.
I wanted to get out of bed but Marianna insisted that I should stay in bed and rest till I am fully recovered.
At lunch time, she came in with another tray of food and my stomach growled in excitement. I finished everything, leaving the tray slate clean.
At dinnertime, she brought in another tray of food. After eating the dinner, she tended to my wounds again. Then after tucking me in, she left with the balm and ointment.
She seems so nice and motherly. There's something about her smile that made me remember my mother.
I missed my Mom and dad. As I laid down on the soft bed, I looked for my locket which had my parent's picture but I couldn't find it.
My heart sank.
Oh no! It's the only thing I have left of my parents. Where could it possibly be? I have always kept it with me since I was a child. It had been what had been keeping me going when I was in the dungeon.
I got up and searched everywhere in the room but couldn't find it.
Where else could it be? Maybe I dropped it in the bathroom while taking my bath. I have to go and check. I made my way out of the room to go to the bathroom.
After a few minutes of roaming around the huge mansion, I finally realized that I'm lost. The corridor stretched out before me with all the doors looking identical. I couldn't find my way to the bathroom, nor could I find my way back to my room.
I tried to use my wolf power to retrace back my steps but my wolf is very weak right now and couldn't.
Then I heard voices behind one of the doors. Perhaps I can get someone to help me find my way back. I leaned closely on the door but I couldn't hear what they were saying.
As I strained to hear them, the door opened suddenly, my heart skipped a beat as I found myself facing the deadly Alpha again.
It's Alpha Xavier
"What the hell are you doing here?" he snarled.
Hazel's POVHe is the last person I wish to see at this moment and here he is standing before me. Talking about being at a tough spot."Answer me, what in the world are you doing stuck to the door?" he asked, looking at me suspiciously.Kael came out from inside the office, a sly grin spreading across his face. I had come to realize that he hated me, even more so that I'm mated to his Alpha."Is there any need to ask her? We all know the reason why she's here. She's here to spy, to complete what her parents couldn't"."No, no, I'm not a spy, I - - I lost my way," I said desperately looking around me. Alpha Xavier's eyes never left my face. I felt anxious and frightened of his intense gaze, his grey eyes expressionless. "I'm telling you the truth, I got lost," I said, looking up at his cold grey eyes.He said nothing. I wriggled nervously, my heart was thumping painfully fast as I recalled how he nearly strangled me to death the previous night. I still feel the strain of his grip on
Hazel's POVSweat broke on my forehead as I paced all over the little room, my mind disturbed. It seemed like forever before I finally heard a delicate knock on my door. I immediately shot towards the door and Marianna beckoned me quietly, holding a little candle in her right hand. The house was grave quiet, I tried as much as I could to walk softly behind her. We got down to the waste burning pit where Marianna disposed of my torn garments and necklace."We must be fast," she murmured, looking carefully behind her. "If anybody catches us here… ""I know, I'll try to be fast" I mumbled, lifting up my long dress with my hands so that I can walk quicker. The place was dark and the air was thick with the smell of ashes."Start searching for it now, be quick," she whispered sharply, when we arrived there.Dropping down on my hands and knees, I filtered through the heap of trash carefully. Then I saw it, my torn dress lay close to the top, I turned it over, tensely looking for the locket.
Xavier's POV I watched as Kael dragged her away. I clenched my fist trying to control myself as her delicious scents filled the air. The candlelight had highlighted her slim figure underneath the nightwear that she had on.When her silver white hair had fallen across her face, I wanted to reach out and --"Control yourself" I growled to myself, resisting my wolf's urges. I hadn't ordered the curfew for nothing. I had gotten information from my most trusted source that a spy was in our midst. I had planned a patrol with Kael to catch the culprit and here she was--the daughter of traitors lurking around in the midnight, holding her parents' locket. I flipped open the locket again and turned it over. It looks old and rusty, except for the pictures of the traitors looking back at me, it seems like an ordinary locket but something tells me otherwise. "Should I ask Kael to post extra guards outside her room?" Beta Marcus said as he emerged out of the shadows. "That won't be necessary.
Hazel's POV I find it hard to sleep, the fear of Alpha Xavier's threat gripped me as I turned it over and over in my mind. My mind swirled with fear and uncertainty of what he plans to do with me tomorrow. Is he going to throw me back into the dungeon? Or is he finally going to execute me? Wild thoughts came popping into my mind, thoughts that made me shiver with fear. What about Marianna?I hope I hadn't gotten her into trouble. She has only been good to me. I wouldn't want her to suffer because of me. I couldn't rest, my mind was troubled with wild imaginations of what might happen. It was already dawn before I finally dozed off. After what seemed like an hour, a faint knock on the door jolted me awake. It's morning already. I yawned as I stretched my sore body. Still feeling sleepy due to lack of enough sleep, I called out, still yawning "Come in."I couldn't wait to see Marianna after what happened last night. My heart beats with anticipation as the door opens. But instead of
Xavier's POV The silence in my study felt unnatural, squeezing against me as I replayed the event of the night in my mind. The rogue wolf's intrusion into my territory was definitely not a coincidence. It had been too determined, his movement was too exact. He hadn't intruded into my territory by some coincidence — somebody had sent him. But why? And most importantly who?I sat in my study, leaning back on my seat as I thought about it, trying to make sense of it. The weak fragrance of debris blood still lingered on the air, an indication of the intruder's short presence and the battle that followed. My wolf stirred restlessly inside me, my senses at its peak. My gaze tumbled to the silver locket lying on the desk before me. It looked like an ordinary locket, however I wasn't tricked. I'd taken it from Hazel last night before the intrusion. She had grasped it firmly, as though it were her life, and the look in her eyes when I'd pulled it from her hold still haunted me. That wasn't
Hazel's POV"Hazel! Hazel! Run!" the distressed voice of my mother rang in my ears. I opened my eyes to see mom's face pale white; a restless expression spread across her face. "What's going on, mom?" She hurriedly put my clothes into a small bag. Why are we packing? “We have to go?“ She didn’t bother responding to my questions. “What about Dad?“ I asked, but no answer followed; she was so focused on packing our things as quickly as possible. I still found it difficult to process what was happening but joined her regardless. I have never seen her panic this way before, so it has to be urgent. Just as we were about to leave, a knock was heard from the front door. Mom’s face immediately went dead at the sound. “I know you’re in there, Rose; do yourself a favor and surrender,” the voice spoke.Mom’s face searched the room before finally landing on the basement door. “Go in there, Hazel,” she said, pushing me. “Don’t open the door no matter what, okay?”“What’s going on, mom?” I co
Hazel's POV"Francis?" I called, my voice trembling as I crawled closer. His eyes were empty, yet I could see a trace of pain, longing to say something. This couldn't be happening.I stumbled backward as Francis's lifeless body fell. I reached out to call or at least check if he still had any life but nothing; his skin was ice cold, sending shivers down my spine. I frantically checked for a pulse, my fingers shaking against his wrist."No, no, no," I cried. I was so confused why everything was happening this way.First Mom, Dad, and now him.Suddenly, there were footsteps.Where are they going? I thought they had left. My heart raced at the thought of them coming back. Was it possible that they had also done this to Francis?"Hazel Myelin, you're under arrest for hereditary crimes of treason and the murder of your fated mate," the head guard growled, his club at the ready. "You'll face the council of elders and accept your judgment."What? My eyes widened.“I didn't kill Francis! By t
Xavier's POVI slowly opened my eyes, feeling tired after a long period of inactivity in hibernation. A joint cracking sound echoed as I stretched my muscles, shaking off lingering sleep and tiredness. I stood up, conducting a general check on my body. My tall, masculine physique commanded respect, striking fear into less confident males and captivating ladies. My gray eyes sparkled as I stroked my hair, thoughts flooding my mind. The Alpha crowning ceremony, scheduled for tomorrow, dominated my thoughts.I surveyed my surroundings, stepping out of my chair. The scent of damp earth and wildflowers filled my nostrils, stirring my senses. Power and dominance coursed through my veins.Too much of a ritual for six months... I wonder how the pack is doing now; in any case, we were still in safe hands prior to hibernation. "Kael!” I growled, my voice still husky from the long sleep. A young man appeared, his tall frame, blonde hair, and golden-brown eyes radiating charm.“Feel me in on w

Xavier's POVShe trembled as my fingers closed around her throat. Her eyes were wide and scared as tears began gushing down her cheeks. She battled defenselessly against my powerful grip."Ple- - ease" I heard her murmur weakly.I came to my senses and abruptly released her. Her hands flew to her neck, rubbing the red marks that my agonizing grip left on her. She gasped and panted for air as she crawled as far from me as she could. Her delicate body shaking with fear."Why..." she croaked, her voice broken. "Why did you...?" she wheezed, gasping for air.I turned my back to her, unable to look at her as guilt crept over me. My wolf snarled inside me, fuming with rage."Why did you hurt her? What's wrong with you?" He snarled.Without a word, I left her room.As I made my way to my study, I thought of what might have happened if I didn't control myself. I might have killed her.I entered my study and banged the door shut with enough force to shake the windows. I settled down heavily i
Hazel's POVThe soft bed was strange to my body, which was used to the chilly, rugged stone of the prison floor. The warm solace of the bed soothes my sore muscles as I lay down on the bed. With a frown on her face, Marianna checked the cuts on both my knees."You've been through a lot" she said shaking her head, a look of compassion in her eyes. That's an understatement, I thought. "This will sting, but you have to hold tight" she said as she opened the balm that the doctor gave me to speed my healing process.I bit my lips to muffle a scream; tears streamed unhindered from my eyes as she applied the balm to the deep cut on my knees, the sting cutting through my body. "Please, please, stop" I whimpered, holding her hand to prevent her from applying the balm on the other knee. She's a lot stronger than she looks as she keeps both my hands away."Keep still, dear," she said, in a firm but kind voice."Please, let me do it myself," I murmured, my words lacking conviction. I knew that
Xavier’s POVI looked at the frail woman in my arms. Her pale face was ghost-white, and sweat dripped all over her face. She looked delicate, extremely delicate for someone accused of murder.I couldn't have cared less about the shocked gasps coming from the pack members as I carried her in my arms from the Moonstone ground back to my mansion. They can murmur all they want, but they dare not challenge me openly, not unless they are ready to suffer the consequences. Kael followed closely behind, his face showing a mixture of confusion and dissatisfaction. I stopped at the entrance to my mansion, turning to him."Bring the doctor right now," I ordered, my tone ruling out any form of argument."Yes, Alpha," Kael said, bowing as he hurried to do as he was told.Once getting inside, I laid her on the sofa in the grand living room. She was lighter than I expected, her frame alarmingly slim. I stepped back to look at her pale face.Marianna, the head maid of the house, came in, a look of c
