The next morning, after breakfast, there was a knock on the door and upon opening it, Merlin found herself face to face with a stunning blonde. She was petite with long legs and beautiful blue eyes while her strawberry blonde hair fell in cascading waves down her back. "Hi, I'm Sandrine, my mate is Zeke’s beta. Can I come in?", she said in a sweet, breathy voice. "I brought you some clothes", she added, almost as an afterthought. Merlin stepped back, wordlessly and opened the door wider to allow her entrance into the room, her gaze falling to the floor. Sandrine breezed into the room and moved to sit down on the bed, gesturing for Merlin to sit beside her. Merlin perched awkwardly beside her, her eyes glued to her hands which lay tightly clenched in her lap.
Feeling her hand on her arm, Merlin looked up to meet Sandrine's eyes on her,"Hey don't look so worried, Zeke won't hurt you, he's just.......temperamental", she laughed, a soft tinkling sound that somewhat put Merlin at ease. Merlin smiled shyly and nodded, her eyes returning to her hands. "Look, why don't you change and I'll show you around? Would that make you feel better?", Sandrine asked, her hand gently squeezing Merlin’s arm. The young witch hesitated, although Sandrine seemed friendly and kind, there was something about the blonde girl that made Merlin uneasy, something that she couldn't quite explain, like her instincts were warning her not to let down her guard.
Merlin could feel Sandrine's eyes on her, studying her and she pushed her doubts from her mind, deciding to try to be nice, at least for now. "I would like that", Merlin replied, still not meeting the blonde girl's eyes as she stood up to take the clothes and headed to the bathroom to change. In the bathroom, Merlin quickly changed into the black top and jeans and the underwear that was discreetly tucked between them before brushing her hair and securing it in a ponytail. Returning to the bedroom, she found Sandrine waiting for her beside the open door, a small smile on her lips, the sight of which only deepened her unease.
Sandrine led her out into a long corridor with doors on either side, eventually coming to a staircase that led to the ground floor and a large foyer. Everywhere, just like her room, the walls and floor were of burnished wood and scattered around were plush rugs with intricate designs while the walls had been decorated with paintings depicting various landscapes and scenes from, what she assumed was werewolf history. As they walked, Sandrine explained that the second floor, where Merlin’s room was, was reserved for guests while Zeke occupied the entire third floor and the ground floor housed his offices and the main kitchen and living areas. They had now reached the front entrance and Sandrine pulled open the door and taking her by the hand, dragged her outside into the sunshine where Merlin stood blinking as she gazed at her surroundings.
The huge mansion that they had just exited stood in the middle of a clearing in the midst of the thick forest and in the distance surrounding it were houses of differing size and design that seemed to stretch away deep into the forest. She noticed that each house was tucked away at a discreet distance from one another to maintain some degree of privacy while also blending into the forest itself. Turning she saw Sandrine staring at her with the same smile from earlier and she quickly averted her eyes just as Sandrine pulled on her hand, forcing her to follow her down a trail that meandered through the forest.
Coming out at the end of the trail, they entered another clearing similar to a field and everywhere she looked, Merlin saw werewolves of every size and color. They were running and fighting, their fierce growls and the sounds of bodies colliding echoing through the forest caused her to flinch and take a step back, as she prepared to run back the way they had come. The thought that Sandrine had deceived her and led her into a trap sent panic coursing through her and she easily slipped her hand from Sandrine's grasp as she turned to run into the forest only to stop, frozen in place at the appearance of a massive, gray wolf that blocked her path.
Instantly recognizing Zeke in his wolf form, she halted and stood waiting for her death, thoroughly convinced now that Sandrine had deliberately brought her here to be slaughtered by the Alpha and his pack. She tried to step back away from him but her body refused to obey her and remained rooted to the spot, trembling with fear. Her lips and mouth were dry and she tried swallowing but found that there was nothing to swallow. The wolf growled menacingly and stalked towards her, his eyes narrowed and glinting with danger. Reaching her, his face so close to hers that she could feel his breath, hot against her skin and his whiskers tickled her nose and cheeks, she closed her eyes and waited for her inevitable demise.
Time seemed to have slowed down and the minutes stretched into an eternity as they stood facing each other, the wolf and the witch. His hot breath continued to fan her face, gently ruffling the loose tendrils of hair that had escaped from her ponytail. With her eyes closed, she could feel every breath and every whisper of the touch of his whiskers and she realized with astonishment that she was becoming aroused. At that precise moment, she felt his snout just barely touching her cheek and shoulder, his fangs just grazing the skin as he sniffed deeply and she shivered. Suddenly he was gone and she felt his absence with a pang of longing as she slowly opened her eyes and found him standing in front of her, completely naked.
His eyes were dark and stormy with a glimmer of something else that she couldn't quite discern but she thought that it was probably hate, judging by the set of his jaw and his tightly clenched fists. But then she caught sight of his massive erection and she stared, wide-eyed with her mouth open, oblivious to the fact that Zeke was watching her reaction. "Quit your gawking! This isn't show and tell!", he growled at her before stalking towards a nearby tree and dragging on a pair of shorts.
Crimson heat flooded her face and Merlin hastily looked away, only to see Sandrine standing beside her with arms folded and a smirk on her face. "Never seen one before?", she asked, amusement clearly visible on her face. "Maybe I can help with that", said a young man, coming to stand beside the blonde. He had brown eyes and hair and was clad only in training shorts and a lopsided grin that looked like it could be permanently plastered on his face. He introduced himself as Logan while laughing along with Sandrine, his eyes roaming lustfully over Merlin. They were taunting her but right now she didn't care so she turned away without answering and began following the trail back through the forest, no longer caring if the werewolves came after her.
She was almost half way to the mansion when a rustling from the foliage made her pause, her pulse quickening as she prepared to run. She heard more rustling and this time the bushes moved as though something was about to burst through the greenery. Merlin gingerly stepped back and looked back towards the trail leading back the way she had come, adrenaline coursing through her body. Hearing a twig snap right beside her, she fully turned and took off running only to slam into a rock hard chest as a pair of hands gripped her arms, locking her in place.
Looking up, she was met with a pair of deep, brown eyes and a lopsided grin. "So you're Merlin. You don't look much like a wizard", his eyes glittered dangerously, unashamedly roaming over her face and body. She realized then how close they were to each other with her body pressed up against him. She tried to step back but his hands held her fast in a vice like grip, keeping her tight against him. "No need to rush off, we're just getting to know each other", his voice had dropped to a menacing whisper and she could feel the panic rising steadily in her chest. "Please let me go", her voice barely a whisper in the silent forest.
"Sure, no problem", his grin widened but there was no amusement in his eyes, "I just want to get to know you better first".
Merlin tried freeing herself from his grip but he was too strong and soon he began dragging her into the foliage beside the trail, her feet scrambling uselessly at the underbrush. She opened her mouth to scream only for a large hand to clamp it tightly shut as the panic swelled inside her, forcing tears to her eyes. Her hands were pressed tightly against his chest preventing her from using them against him. It seemed darker as the sun struggled to penetrate the tree canopy above and she couldn't tell how far into the forest he had dragged her before he threw her, unceremoniously, onto the ground. She flinched away from him, immediately scrambling backwards before her back hit a large tree trunk and she quickly tried to stand. He walked towards her and she saw his claws extend from his fingers just before he leapt forward and pushed her to the ground, his body pinning her beneath him. She tried pushing him and kicking out at him but his strength was overpowering and she only
The pack doctor, Lesley, had arrived shortly after Zeke left, she was kind and funny and immediately put Merlin at ease. After a thorough physical examination, she had dressed the minor cuts and given her some painkillers before leaving her to get dressed and rest. Finally alone, Merlin fell asleep, the day's events having caught up with her. Night had fallen by the time Merlin awoke, blinking slowly as she looked around the room, she realized that someone had turned on the lights. She hurriedly sat up in bed, her eyes scanning the room when she spotted Zeke, asleep in a chair in a corner of the room. She breathed a sigh of relief and leaned back against the pillows, feeling safe now that he was here. She watched him sleep for a while before he seemed to sense she was awake and his eyes snapped open, momentarily startling her. "I'm sorry I didn't mean to wake you", she apologized and surprisingly, she found that she actually meant it. "It's fine, ho
Descending the staircase, Merlin saw Zeke standing at the front door, talking on his phone. Just as she slowed down to give him time to finish the conversation, he suddenly turned around and looked up, his gaze locked onto her as she came toward him. His eyes seemed to bore into her very soul and she couldn't help but avert her gaze, unable to meet such close scrutiny. She reached the bottom of the stairs when he turned and started walking down a corridor on his left while calling over his shoulder, "Come with me", leaving her with no choice but to follow.Following close behind him, Merlin studied his back, noting how his hair, grown long in the back, hung in haphazard strands against the collar of his shirt while his broad shoulders stretched taut, the crisp, white fabric before tapering down to his waist. The memory of how he had found her yesterday in the forest, rose unbidden in her thoughts, and she inwardly cringed, even though, she had already seen h
His softly whispered question hung heavy in the air while they stood facing each other with barely an inch between them. Her face was flushed, lending her cheeks a rosy glow and her eyes seemed to darken and glimmer in the sunlight that filtered through the open windows. She felt a soft breeze gently caress her face and lift the strands of her hair, stroking it back away from her neck and shoulders. She didn't know how long they stood there, only that she was frozen in place, mesmerized by his hypnotic gray eyes. She didn't see him lean closer until she felt his lips brush lightly against her own, that one touch, sending thousands of tiny sparks of electricity rushing through her every nerve. Then the door to his office burst open and Abel, his Beta, walked in, halting just inside the door when he saw them. "Alpha?", he questioned, not willing to believe the sight before him.Zeke raised his head toward him, taking his time, his hands still on her arm
Suddenly he released her and Merlin stood, her chest heaving and her body trembling from something other than the cold, their eyes locked onto each other while the storm raged unabated around them."Go now Merlin!", he shouted, his voice immediately swallowed by the sounds of the storm.Reluctantly, turning away, she ran through the balcony doors and once inside, she quickly turned around but he was already gone, the balcony empty except for the rain falling in an unbroken sheet of water. Lying alone in bed, later that night, Merlin fell asleep while thinking about his lips and dreamed of his mouth on hers. The next morning, after breakfast, Zeke took her with him to the training grounds, where Sandrine had brought her on her first day at the camp. He made her sit in the shade under a tree, where he was able to keep an eye on her wherever he was on the field. Merlin, unused to seeing werewolves strip naked to shift, had kept her eyes studiously
Catching movement from the corner of his eye, Zeke turned to find Merlin on her knees, her head thrown back and her arms open wide, just as an icy blast of wind howled through the library, ripping books from the shelves and scattering them across the walls and floor. The bookshelves teetered precariously under the force of the wind, only barely remaining upright while the lights flickered, almost going off completely.A cracking sound from beneath him, dragged his attention back to the witch trapped under him, who suddenly screamed, a gut wrenching scream full of pain. Looking down he noticed that her arm was twisted at an impossible angle, the bone obviously broken. Zeke jumped back from her and shifted back, confused and shocked, when her leg contorted at an odd angle followed by another cracking sound eliciting another shriek of pain that echoed throughout the library. His eyes moved back to Merlin and a split second later, he was beside her, pushing her arms down an
Merlin was descending the staircase just as Zeke entered the foyer, their eyes meeting as he held her gaze until she reached the bottom. She walked slowly towards him, her hands clasped nervously in front of her but her eyes never left his face."I.....I'm sorry....I should explain.....", she spoke haltingly as she came to stand in front of him."Let's walk outside, the fresh air might do you some good", he said, gesturing towards the front doors.Quietly, she accepted and together they walked through the doors and out into the forest. They walked for a while in silence, listening to the sounds of the forest, just enjoying the crisp air and warm sunshine. Being a werewolf, Zeke naturally enjoyed the outdoors, preferring it to the indoors and he found that he was not uncomfortable with having her here with him. He could tell that she was also enjoying being outside so he took the opportunity to point out various landmarks and features of th
"Excuse me?", she asked, her eyes wide.He sighed impatiently, "You're soaked, you need to get out of those clothes before you catch a cold""But I have nothing else to wear", she protested."There's some blankets here that we can use", he replied, gesturing to a large wooden trunk beside him.She looked at him, uncertainty in her eyes, as a draft blew through the cave making her shiver."Just change out of your clothes over there while I start a fire", he said, waving his hand in the general direction of the trunk as he crouched down and began lighting a fire. The cold was seeping into her bones and she grit her teeth to stop them chattering as she rushed to the trunk behind him and began taking off her clothes before quickly pulling a blanket around her. She stood behind him, quietly watching as he started a fire and patiently tended it, leaving her wondering how he could stand the cold."Could you pass me a
As they walked together through the endless fog that seemed, to Merlin, to be alive with movement and the soft sounds of whispering and sighs, Merlin gradually began to feel at ease and she relaxed in the other woman’s company. Their arms were still firmly linked together and the weight of the singer’s arm through her own was comforting and reassuring and allowed Merlin to feel lightness that she hadn’t felt for quite some time. She could no longer hear the voices of the Ancestors, the sound having faded away as they walked further into the dense and roiling fog. Although she had no idea where they were going she didn’t feel either tense or apprehensive but rather she enjoyed the feeling of being free from the responsibilities that had just been thrust upon her.“You are as enchanting as any Cottard witch but perhaps more so…….we have waited a long time for you Merlin Cottard”, the older woman spoke, finally breaking the companionable silence.“What is your name?” Merlin responded.“I
Merlin and Zeke made their way through the cemetery with the moon hanging high in the sky, its pale light reflected off the stark white and grey of the tombstones while casting shadows under the overhanging branches of the trees. A slight breeze stirred and soughed softly through the trees, the sound almost like a breathless sigh that seemed to follow them as they weaved amongst the graves, making their way towards the tomb from their previous visit. The tomb loomed high above them, its white marble walls starkly visible in the darkened cemetery as the stone gargoyles peered down menacingly at them from the gabled roof. The temperature seemed to drop as they entered the tomb and Merlin shivered, glancing around at the smooth walls as Zeke moved assuredly ahead of her, his heightened senses enabling him to easily see in the semi-darkness inside the tomb. The walls gradually gave way to the ante chamber from earlier which was once again lit with burning torches that filled the chamber w
When Merlin eventually came to she found Zeke asleep beside her and faint moonlight spilling in through the open windows. Night had fallen while she had been passed out and she shuddered remembering what had occurred in the garden earlier that day. The images and voices from her head continued to swirl and dance filling her with dreaded anticipation for what was to come. Quietly getting out of bed so as not to wake him, she made her way to the bathroom and took a long, hot shower before returning to the bedroom. She was dressed and sitting at her dresser brushing her long, red hair when she saw in the mirror Zeke stirring and slowly open his eyes. He blinked and looked around before catching sight of her as a slow grin spread across his face. She knew that look and what it meant but right now she needed him to focus on something else but as he lifted the covers to reveal his throbbing desire for her, she couldn’t help but falter in her resolve.“Come back to bed babe”, his voice was w
When Merlin woke up the next morning she found the bed empty, Zeke had already gone downstairs to his office. She lay in bed and stretched lazily, snuggling back down under the covers as a faint memory began to stir in the back of her mind. The smell of cigarette smoke seemed to hang around her like an invisible fog and the acrid stench of stale beer and spilt alcohol reminiscent of a smoky backroom bar. Her eyes closed and her brows furrowed in concentration as she tried to focus on the mental image buried somewhere in her subconscious. A strange feeling of disquiet crept stealthily into her heart and she struggled to find the haunting memory that seemed to float just out of her reach.Minutes passed but still nothing and she groaned loudly and throwing back the covers, climbed out of the warm, soft bed and padded barefoot across the floor to the bathroom. Once inside she stripped off her clothes and stood under the shower, allowing the hot water to cascade over her in the hope that
It was late by the time they got to the mansion and everyone was already asleep. Most of the lights inside had been turned off, leaving the mansion cloaked in shadow. They entered through the front door and quietly made their way upstairs to the third floor. After a quick shower together, they were soon in bed, both of them falling into a deep sleep. As the night wore on, giving way to the early hours of the morning, Merlin began to dream. ******************************She found herself back in the bar that they had visited earlier that night but this time it was empty except for the singer from the jazz band. Instead of the crimson sheath that she had been wearing, she was dressed in a sequined, black dress and feathered boa, reminiscent of the 1920s. Sitting alone at a table, smoking through a slender cigarette holder while humming to herself, she watched Merlin through the cigarette smoke with lazy interest. Merlin walked cautiously toward her, as she scanned the rest of bar, c
Merlin was quiet as she thought about this, Zeke’s question had caught her off guard but it was hardly surprising. Although she was a directly descended from Angeline, there was something that disturbed her about the woman but she couldn't quite put her finger on it. Aunt May had been adamant that she trust no one and Merlin took her advice seriously. But the question still remained, unanswered though it was. "What are you thinking?", Zeke’s voice broke through her thoughts. "I can't trust her.....I just don't know why", Merlin sighed and shook her head. "Trust your instincts, they've never been wrong"Merlin glanced at him and smiled, he was the only constant in her life right now and he could always make her feel better even in the worst situations. "I feel like there's something I'm missing, like a connection that I can't see and if I could only find it I'll have all the answers even without the grimoire""It'll come to you Merlin. Don't force it, you just need to relax and let
They searched everywhere in the library for the grimoire but found nothing. It was as if it had simply vanished. Merlin was distraught and in a panic, before Zeke eventually calmed her down. It had been her only chance to find out Angeline's real motives and help her decide what to do about the Ancestors. It seemed too much of a coincidence that the grimoire went missing right after they had left the library to investigate the noise outside. Something or someone didn't want them to discover the book's contents and had caused a diversion in order to take it. There was a lot more going on than either of them had initially thought. The next day, Merlin had returned to the library to check again for the grimoire, but still there was no sign of it. Remembering the connection that she had felt with the book, she had tried searching for it using this, but she wasn't able to sense its presence in the library or anywhere else in the mansion. Whoever had taken it, had taken it far enough away
Although she had been upset at first, Merlin soon accepted that Juliette would be safer with Sébastien than with her and Zeke. She only wished that she had been here to see her leave. Nevertheless, it now meant that she could focus on Angeline and the Ancestors and the decision that she had to make. Two days had already passed and she was running out of time but she just didn't know where to start. She had decided to search for something that might help her in the library but so far she had come up empty. Grabbing another armload of books, she headed back to the table and set them down before spreading them out in front of her. She immediately noticed that one of them was pretty old and was bound in an expensive, brown leather cover with a clasp on the side. Placing the palm of her hand on it's smooth and worn surface, she felt a pleasant warmth radiating from the book and up her arm. It carried with it a sense of peace and deep down she felt it calling to her, beckoning her to open
After throwing up an illusion spell to give them a chance to escape, Merlin turned back to face Angeline, who had made her way into the outer chamber. Preparing herself for a confrontation, Merlin was taken aback when Angeline rushed toward her, wringing her hands with a worried look about her. "Merlin listen! We don't have much time", she whispered, her eyes darting furtively around the chamber. Merlin shook her head in confusion, wondering what was going on and why Angeline was acting so strangely. "I have put up a temporary barrier to hide my thoughts but it won't last long so I need you to listen carefully", Angeline was practically pleading with her. Merlin gave a small nod in agreement and the ancient witch continued. "The Ancestors plan to use you to absorb the powers of all the most powerful living witches into one single entity""Why?""To finally defeat the werewolves""But why now? We've coexisted peacefully for almost a century"Angeline hesitated, her hands fidgeting
