In the middle of the forest in our pack's territory was a clearing. It was used for a lot of things; pack ceremonies, initiation rituals, and punishment among others. I had been there a few times for joyous occasions but there was nothing good about what was about to happen.
My eleven year old twin siblings and I were kneeling down, our hands tied up and chained to tree stumps in front of us. My father's hands were tied together and hoisted up with a strong rope. He was barely able to stand on his two feet at the moment, only managing to use his toes. The pack warriors would occasionally raise the rope and leave him hanging every now and then as they questioned him. My mother, on the other hand, was tied onto a long thin tree and had been crying since they took us there. Efforts made by father to stop her were futile.
The pack warriors who were laughing stopped when our alpha and his beta arrived. Alpha Aragon was a big man made of hard, sinewy muscle. Every feature on his body was hard and sharp, especially his piercing black eyes that had the power of intimidating everyone him.
Apparently his insides were just as hard as the outside and that gave him one hell of a reputation. He was a very tough and ruthless man. He was said to be very hard to kill. Many had tried and failed. Why my father thought he'd get away with betraying him was beyond my understanding.
“Has he admitted to it?” the alpha's deep voice pierced the air.
All the warriors nodded. Just a few minutes back they had been acting like they owned the world. Now they were like tiny ants standing near an elephant. The whole werewolf world shuddered at the mention of Alpha Aragon's name.
“He has,” a warrior called Tom said.
Alpha Aragon looked around. “Where are the stupid whips? I knew this bastard betrayed me.” He stalked to my father and grabbed his chin, tilting his head while one of the pack warriors ran to a nearby cabin. “You’re going to face the consequences of your actions before you die. It’ll be the last thing you remember.”
Two burly men entered the clearing.
“Alpha Aragon,” one of them said.
Aragon turned to the pack wolves. “Untie the twins.”
My mother started wailing and Alpha Aragon turned and kicked her stomach. She screamed even more and seemed defiant to not stop it.
The twins were untied within seconds.
“Take them,” the alpha said as my mother yelled.
“Stop, don't take my children. They're all I have. Please I'll do anything you want, alpha Aragon.”
I could only sob as I watched my siblings taken away by two strangers.
The ruthless alpha was deaf to my mother's pleas. Two whips were handed to him. He threw one to the group and looked my way. Our eyes met, mine going wide with realization when he started walking towards me.
I screamed before the whip hit me on the back. Since I was chained to the stump, I could not move at all, and had to endure the hot whips hitting my back while I screamed loudly. My mother was also filling the air with her screams and pleas for the alpha to stop.
Every lash sent searing pain all over my body. My back was burning hot like fire was razing it. The whips continued, growing with intensity every time. I screamed in pain until my throat was hoarse and words could not come out.
Glancing at my father, I noticed his poker face. He just stood there doing nothing even though it was his fault. When the whip finally stopped moving, I started to sob, not only because of the physical pain, but also the emotional pain from my father's indifference to his family's suffering.
When my mother's friend Caroline had advised her to leave my father because he'd never change, my mother had thought she was jealous of our family. Caroline had divorced from her husband and lived with her two daughters, fending for them alone. My mother had thought she was jealous that she had someone who could provide for her. I wished mother had listened to Caroline.
Alpha Aragon left me and ambled towards my mother who was beside herself. “Pathetic woman.”
“Let her go, please.” she begged. “You can kill me.”
Aragon smiled and turned to a pack warrior standing behind him. He motioned for the dagger in the warrior's hand.
“Nooo,” I yelled when the alpha grabbed the dagger, turned and rammed it into my mother's chest. He twisted it while she screamed and writhed in pain.
“Please stop.” I kept yelling as I broke down, energy seeping out my body. All I could do was sob after seeing my mother's head fall limply to the side. She was gone.
I wanted to yell at my father, condemn his to the deepest pits of hell but I had no energy. I lay on top of the stump which had seen more blood than anything in all its existence. I could smell blood but couldn’t do anything about it.
I watched as a noose was placed over my father's head. I didn't feel anything as I saw him being hoisted up by his neck. Numb, I watched him die. He never screamed for help, or showed any weakness. He just let himself go, almost peacefully. When he was dead, his eyes bulged and a warrior cut the rope making father's body fall to the ground like a sack of potatoes.
My parents were dead, my siblings gone. I breathed and waited for my end. It didn't come. Instead a warrior unchained me and pushed my body to the ground. I didn't complain, didn't try to resist. I just waited, staring at alpha Aragon who was smoking calmly as the warriors gathered the bodies of my parents near a fireplace which had been stocked with piles of wood.
Two thin men soon came to the clearing and spoke to the alpha. One pulled out a ward of cash and handed it to the beta who counted the notes before nodding his head and gesturing to me. The men walked towards me, and grabbed my body as I kicked my head trying to put up a futile resistance.
One of them placed a handkerchief over my nose. The smell of a drug hit me and before long, the world morphed into darkness.
It was the screaming that woke me. Opening my eyes, I saw a woman screaming her head off on the bed next to mine. I opened my mouth to tell her to stop and closed it when I saw the rest of her body. Her belly was huge. She was pregnant. There were two other beds in the room, all occupied with girls who were staring silently at the expectant woman. The room had a musky smell and no windows. It was probably why the dim lights had been left on. I tried to get up to help the woman and that was when I realized I couldn't. My legs were chained to the lower frame of the bed.“Hey,” I said. The woman stopped screaming and stared at me for a few seconds before resuming. Now I understood why the other girls were just looking on. I fell back on the pillow and stared at the stained ceiling and walls. What happens in this room, I wondered as I scanned the stains of all colors spread all over the place. The door opened and an elderly woman walked in, followed by two young women in maid's uniform
An hour later, breakfast was served. It was hard for me to enjoy a meal in our dismal surroundings but it seemed my roommates were used to it. They ate up quickly. Even Patricia had to, she needed the strength for her body to physically recover from pregnancy and child birth.“Why do you think you weren't able to conceive?” I asked the girls.Having seen what Patricia went through, I never wanted to ever give birth. From the look of things, I was going to be a slave for a very long time. Giving birth to a child after all that pain and having them ripped away had to be the worst thing to ever happen to a woman. I could not even imagine the extent of the pain in Patricia's heart. She seemed to be holding up on the outside but I was sure her soul was shattering into pieces.“I was on birth control pills for a very long time,” Maryanne said. “I got sexually active very early. The healer in our pack occasionally travelled to the human cities to get some modern medicine. Our alpha has a co
Being alone meant thinking, and thinking brought unhappiness. I couldn't stop thinking about Rose and Ren. Where were they?If there was a thing I was glad about, it was that they had been taken before my parents got killed. I couldn't imagine what watching the murder of their parents would have done to them. They were children who had always been around family and friends. They were having a hard time and it hurt that I could not do anything to save them. I could only hope they were in the pack. That was so much better since they would be around familiar places. Maybe if I appeased my new owner and worked hard enough, he'd grant me my freedom, and I would search for my family. My train of thought was interrupted when the door opened. A woman in maid's uniform walked in and dropped a pile of clothes on the bed. Except the green towels and black underwear, the rest were identical to hers.“I see you're awake,” she said. “Take a shower and get to work. The bathrooms are at the end of
Washing the work men's clothes was the hardest jobs I had ever done. It took hours for all the dirt to get off them. I did my best and left the permanent stains alone. Maryanne was assigned to work with me, but she was a mess so I let her sob and wallow in her misery while I did all the work. I was trying to be strong for the both of us. We had both lost family in such a short amount of time. She may not have been related to Angela and Patricia but after living together for a year, they had become family. When the workmen's clothes were dry and their rooms were clean, I was able to relax.Maryanne and I walked through the trees to the pack palace which was just a few meters away.It was beautiful, magnificent. The tall and white building had five beautiful stories. “So much better than my pack's house,” Maryanne said.“Mine too,” I said.Dad had once told me that Blackmoon was one of the richest pack kingdoms in the werewolf world. Apparently, there were a lot of minerals in their
“We've found our mate,” Ada said, brimming with excitement.“Shut up, Ada.”I had blocked my wolf for a while because I didn't feel like listening to her chatty self, but somehow she'd broken through. I could still smell the alpha's essence from where I was so I decided to move farther away. I crossed the rows of trees and headed to the slave quarters. Maryanne hollered at me from where she was seated but I ignored her and continued to walk away. The workmen who were seated by their house made lewd remarks that made me feel self-conscious but I continued to trudge on, shutting them out.Back in my room, I lay on the bed, facing the bland white ceiling. Growing up, I had fantasized a lot about meeting my mate for the first time. None of those fantasies were identical to the events that had occurred. My fantasies included us bumping into each other, being introduced by friends, among other beautiful scenarios. We would be drawn by our scents and our wolves would scream ‘mate’ as we m
Dane led the way, Maryanne followed. I trudged along from the back. After what that young man had said about Dane, I was worried he would suddenly brandish his whip and hit whatever was next to him. From the back, he did not look scary. He looked like a regular rock music-loving tall guy with lean muscles and beautiful long hair. If I didn’t know any better, I would feel like getting to know him better.Maryanne, on the other hand seemed confident as if she was not a bit scared. I was starting to realize that Maryanne was not what I initially thought her to be. She was a not weak and whiny damsel in distress. She was a strong young woman willing to take on the world and defend herself. It appeared she was only a mess at the time because Angella, the person she loved most in the world, had been taken away from her.In the women’s building, Dane opened a door to reveal a staircase at the foot of which was another door. Opening that door, he ushered us into the red room. The hairs on my
The trees behind the fence swayed, moving in tune with the wind. Warm fresh air wafted into the courtyard, making the clean pink dresses sway as they dried. The dresses were beautiful and immaculate like the owners.I couldn't help but wonder if their jobs as pack seamstresses were better than the cleaning Maryanne and I were taxed with. Sure, it looked beautiful and aesthetic but using traditional sewing machines was hard work. Besides, they had to hand sew some things like buttons, embroidery which left their hands with a variety of sores from needle accidents. Cleaning and washing was hard for me since I had not done much of it before, but it couldn't be worse than sitting by a machine all day. I had a lot of rest time where I could sit outside and enjoy nature. My wolf was restless and needed a good run, but I could not break the rules. I was not supposed to turn in the property except during the full moon which made it almost impossible not to turn. The concrete slab which had f
When my mother complained about father's involvement in activities that would destroy our pack, I had got concerned. I spoke to him about it and he told him to trust him. He had a way of ensuring no one would find out it was him until we were all millions of miles away from the pack.I trusted him. Look where that got me and my family. Maybe the rest of us would have been spared if I had reported him.It seemed I had not learnt my lesson. I had gone and trusted a woman I knew nothing about. Now I was trapped.Grace was not going to choose me over her granddaughter.“If she's your granddaughter, why are you working like a slave?”“Because I did something terrible. Jane convinced alpha Ridian to be lenient to me. She defended me when no one would, and that's why I'll fight anyone in the world for her. You are not going to come between Jane and what she loves most.”“What does Jane love most?”“Being the queen,” she said. “The Luna of the greatest pack in this region. Now you see why hav
Cilla. One week later, we assembled the whole of Moonshine pack. We had speeches from both sides and the last speech was Ridian’s. When he made the announcement that Sasha Miller would lead the pack, the crowd erupted in cheers. “Please come forward,” Ridian asked Sasha who seemed so shocked by the announcement she couldn’t move for a while. Eventually, she strode forward in a responsible fashion and the crowd roared once me. I scanned the gathering and found alpha Aragon in tears. He seemed to be very happy that his daughter was going to be in charge. “We have been observing this brilliant young woman for a while since she returned and we have decided that she is the best person to replace her father in the leadership of this pack,” Ridian continued. “We shall talk with the elders so we can have a coronation ceremony as soon as possible. Although your new luna will have to report to me, you’ll have more autonomy over yourselves. We believe she’s the best person to steer this pack to
CillaWaking up next to my lovelies was the best thing ever. I had slept through the morning. I woke up at 11 am and found Rose and Ren still asleep, their heads on each of my arms. My arms were hurting. When I tried to push them away so I could get up, they opened their eyes and tried to snuggle closer. I chuckled before speaking.“My hands hurt,” I said. They both moved away from them and sat up so I could bring my arms together. The action was painful but it was worth it. I had had the best sleep in a while and would do it a hundred times over. Knowing that Jane was dead and couldn’t hurt us was the icing on the cake.“How did you know where we were?” Rose asked.“I’m your big sister. I know everything.”“No, you don’t.” Rose said.“Seriously,” Ren said.I had noticed that Ren was growing faster, developing the snarky attitude of a teenager before his sister. Since I was now a parent, I had to learn patience and find a way of dealing with him without causing more problems.I told t
Ridian.“Rose! Ren!” Cilla yelled, while running around the forest with tears streaming down her face. I followed her, begging her to stop for a moment but she couldn’t. She continued running further and further from me. When she finally stopped, she dropped to the ground.“I can’t believe we did everything for nothing,” she said. “You were right. We shouldn’t have wasted time going to the prison. Why did I have to think of such a stupid plan? Now, Jane is dead and I’m the one suffering. What kind of stupid revenge is this? I messed up, Ridian. I’m so stupid.”“No, you’re not.” I told her. “We’re going to find them. I’m sure they’ve run off somewhere. Suddenly, I felt something hit me from the back. “Run, Cilla. I’ve been shot.”Cilla Rose and came behind me, pulling out the arrow quickly. We both turned instantly and started running. We ran until we were out of the forest. George and his human friend were also nowhere to be seen. “What is happening?” Cilla asked. When we got into a
Ridian. The children’s shelter was surrounded by a wall fence which we easily jumped over. The car remained outside the fence while Cilla and I went in, dressed in our ski masks, the driver waiting for our exit. The shelter had an office building and a boarding house where the children and youth resided in. from our online stalking, we had found out that it was one large hall divided in the middle. One side was for very young children and preteens while the other was for older teens. It was amazing how foolish humans were. How do you claim to be protecting children yet give out all the details about where they lived? It didn’t make sense at all.Ross and Ren were twelve, and that meant they were in the teens section. The website had stated that 11 and below were in the younger children section. This made things easy for us since the younger children had matrons sleeping in their side. The side with older teens had no adults. The guard at the gate was easily taken care of. Cilla had k
Ridian. The city was called Everdeen City. It took us about three hours to get there by car. When we reached, Cilla and I paid for a suite in a hotel while the warriors went to search for the location of the shelter and prison with the help of Google maps. Science and technology was making things really easy. We waited in out room anxiously for more information while watching the television for more updates. As expected, the police did not give out much information about the investigation. That was annoying. I felt like visiting her but I knew it would alert her on what we were planning to do. I wanted it to be a surprise to her. A few hours later, the men arrived and we were also taken to the place. We drove by the shelter and then the prison where Jane was being held as the police searched for information about the children. We decided we would carry out both operations at night. I found it hard to believe that Jane had been arrested by a human policeman and had failed to defend he
Ridian. It had been two days since Cilla started training with Brody and it was not sitting well with me. I knew that she wasn’t going to do anything with him. I think I was more annoyed by the fact that she had opted to ask him to train her and not me. I was so much better than Brody in everything. It hurt me that she opted to ask him, as if she trusted him more than me. I tried to distract myself with other things but it was hard to stop thinking about the fact that they were both training together. When we were together, everything was mechanical. We did almost everything together and even slept on the same bed but we failed to connect like before. Cilla spent most of her attention on her phone and I ended up doing the same. We were like two strangers living in the same house. Cilla was so depressed that I barely knew what to do with her. I tried to help her but she never seemed receptive or interested in fixing the issues that were bothering us.The only good thing happening was
Jane.Tom was a lanky young man. He was very tall but quite thin. He had a beautiful sweet face and a very nice smile. The first time he smiled at me, I felt my insides warm up. His house was quite messy as it looked like a party of druggies had just ended. The house reeked of smoke and alcohol. It was no place for children but I had nowhere else to take them. While the kids were still unconscious, I quickly tried to clean the house, not for their sake but for mine as well. I didn’t think I’d feel comfortable staying in such a dirty place. If Rody had told me Tom was a mess, I’d have found another place. Tom was watching me as I worked and since I was wearing very short shorts, I decided to give him a good view. I needed him on my side. People are fickle about kids, even bad people. Anyone who wants kids to suffer is a monster that’s beyond saving. There are not many people like that. There was a chance that tom was not like that. I had noted his reaction when he saw me getting them
RidianWhen Cilla settled into bed next to me, I felt tempted to reach over and pull her close but was somehow able to resist the temptation. I was tired of fixing things. If she wanted the silent treatment, I would give it to her. After all, she was the one who barely showed any happiness after knowing that I was back home. I was beginning to think that she wanted me gone. But hell, that was my pack. There was no way I would abandon it for long. If she didn’t want to see my face, she could leave. I could survive without her, after all. Before she came into the room, I had been about to sleep but now that she was lying right next to me, it was almost impossible to get any sleep, especially since a certain part of my body had decided not to listen to the rational thoughts coming from my mind. It wanted what it wanted and not even my stubbornness was going to stop it. I decided to wait it out since I didn’t want to cave and be the one to make the first move. I was pretty sure Cilla wasn
Cilla.Defeating the rogues made me feel pretty good about myself. I realized the need for me to train more after that attack. Having realized that Ridian would not always be there to protect me and the pack, it was time for me to better my skills incase stronger enemies decided to attack us. I was very happy with what I had achieved but knew there was need for me to do more.Kenny tried to punch my arm but I expertly dodged it and punched him in the chest instead. I had realized that he was trying to go easy on me and was trying to …him so he could fight back and we’d have a better training. As much as I tried he never budged so I started thinking of getting a new trainer. “Call Brody,” I told Kenny as I went to sit under a tree and drank some water. Kenny concentrated and linked to Brody. I didn’t hear what he was seeing since he was speaking through his mind. Eventually, he came up to where I was.“Are you sure about this?” he asked. “Mr. Jamison is said to be pretty rough on the
