Jade turned fully and faced Orion, using his body to shield Kalista. He regarded Orion suspiciously and voiced the questions on his mind.

"How is it possible for a werewolf pack to be in the human realm?"

Orion chuckled again, his gray eyes twinkling with amusement. "A typical question every Alpha would ask"

"Still you haven't answered it," Jade cut in.

"Living in the human realm makes it better to exist undetected," Orion finally answered. "We don't have any enemies here, and we are far away from the next human village, Northville"

A dark look appeared on Jade's face when he remembered how he had gone feral, massacring the entire inhabitants of Northville. He didn't want to relive the gory sight so he changed the discussion.

"Why are you away from other packs?" he asked. "I'm sure you are aware of Hayden, the werewolf community. Why cut yourself off from your own kind?"

The smile remained on Orion's face but in his eyes, a strange emotion flashed past. It was so quick that it went

Jade reclined against the single seat close to the window, staring up at the full moon. The glow of the moon illuminated the golden orbs of his iris's, eyes that were slightly unfocused. He was thinking of Hayden, his home. He had been gone for more than a year, and still he hadn't been able to retrieve the Soul Gem.Without the gem, Hayden would crumble. The werewolves would be rendered homeless, becoming an easy target for vicious rogues. His mind strayed to his father, and he wondered how the Alpha King was coping with the absence of the gem. As much as he tried to avoid it, his thoughts brought back the memories of his mother. She had died protecting the gem, and if he didn't find that gem, her death would be in vain."No!" Jade suddenly snapped. He couldn't let his sweet mother's death be in vain. He would find the Soul Gem and unleash his vengeance on the murderers. He would not stop until he had avenged her death.Suddenly becoming restless, he got up from the seat and that wa

The moonlight filtered through the room, casting eerie shadows on the walls as the heavy silence hung in the air. Jade's heart pounded in his chest, a mixture of shock, despair, and fury swirling within him. The news hit him like a physical blow, threatening to shatter his resolve. It couldn't be, be thought. It had to be a dream. Kalista couldn't be dead."No," he whispered, his voice barely audible, as if denying the reality could somehow change it. His eyes remained fixed on Kalista's motionless form on the bed, hoping furiously that she would open her eyes. Orion's face was a mix of sympathy and helplessness. He understood the depths of Jade's pain, having experienced the loss of a mate himself. The Alpha's own memories of grief seemed to resurface, mirroring the torment that Jade now faced. The room seemed to close in around Jade as he stood there, his mind a maelstrom of conflicting emotions. The past year had been a relentless pursuit of the Soul Gem, fueled by the memories of

The room was filled with tense silence as the words left Kalista's lips. All eyes were trained on her, ears strained as they leaned forward, eager to hear who pushed her.But Jade shook his head. "We can talk about this in the morning," he told her softly. "After you're out of these wet clothes and when you feel much better""Yes... I... I think that will be better," Orion added, his voice quivering slightly. Kalista cast a wary glance at him and totally ignored him. She gripped Jade's shirt weakly and stared into his eyes."It can't wait," she said, a strange urgency in her voice. "You need to know"Jade suddenly became suspicious. He had concluded in his mind that it had to be one of the shewolves that did it out of spite and jealousy. But now that Kalista insisted on telling him, coupled with the look of panic in her eyes, he knew it was more serious than he assumed."Fine," he finally agreed. "But first, let's get you out of these wet clothes"Minutes later, Kalista was in a more

HaydenIt was still midnight when the royal horn was blown through out Hayden to announce the death of Alpha Xerxes. After Apollo gave his order for Xerxes not to be disturbed, Xerxes had spent the remaining minutes of his life trying to crawl towards the door. He needed to let his warriors know that Apollo was the enemy, but with each move he made, his heart weakened the more. Finally giving up, he collapsed on the ground with one hand outstretched towards the doors where the warriors stood on the other side. His heart beat decreased and red spots appeared at the edges of his vision. The Alpha felt real fear for the first time. Fear of what would happen to Hayden once he died. And worst of all, fear for his son, Jade. Jade who was still searching for the gem would have no idea that his uncle was the enemy. "Forgive me... Jade...," Xerxes whispered and his eyes closed as he breathed his last.Hours passed and the warriors began to wonder why the Alpha chose to lock himself inside th

The moon hung high in the night sky, casting an eerie silver glow over the courtyard. The air crackled with tension as two powerful werewolves, Orion and Jade, faced each other with grim determination. Their eyes locked in a fierce gaze, their minds focused solely on the battle that was about to unfold. The world seemed to fade away, leaving only the two Alphas and the imminent clash that would determine their fates."Before we begin, just know I never meant for this to happen Jade," Orion's voice drifted over to Jade with the wind."Whatever you have to say, save it!" Jade said coldly, his eyes a terrifying gold. "You made a wrong choice when you tried to kill my mate. You know the laws of the werewolves. This is inevitable"From the other side of the courtyard, Kalista stood with the warriors and the other shifters. The shewolves glared at her as if blaming her for what their Alpha was about to go through, but they knew that this time, Orion was terribly wrong. They could only watc

Talon Darkheart stood at the cliff a craggy hill, his eyes narrowing as he surveyed the tranquil village nestled below. The full moon's silvery light bathed the landscape in an eerie glow, casting long shadows that seemed to dance with a malevolent intent. Behind him, an army of rogue werewolves, their eyes aglow with intense darkness, waited for his orders. He had wanted to bring half a dozen rogue warriors, but at the last minute he changed his mind. Jade was a powerful lycan with Alpha blood in his veins, and same with Apollo, Jade's uncle. He had to be fully prepared to take them both down.As the wind rustled through the tall grass, Talon's lips curled into a chilling smile. A smile devoid of humor. He had failed in killing Xerxes and making him feel the pain he felt years ago. Now was his chance. He would enjoy destroying Jade and his backstabbing uncle."Alpha Talon," a voice hissed from behind him. He turned to find his second-in-command, Klyde, his eyes gleaming like burning

Orion led Jade and Kalista through a series of turns inside his home until they got to a flight of stairs where there was a strange door that led to a secret room underground. As Orion began to descend the stairs, Jade stopped and held Kalista beside him."What games are you playing, Orion?" he demanded.Orion who was halfway through the door poked his head out and realized that Jade wasn't following him. "What do you mean? I'm trying to help you," he explained, climbing out of the room. "My pack will keep those two men from following you, but not for long. We must hurry"Jade's eyes narrowed as suspicion clouded his gaze. The memory of Orion's previous attempt on Kalista's life was a raw wound in his mind. He didn't trust Orion one bit, not after how he almost killed Kalista."Jade," Orion's voice cut through the tension, soft yet urgent. "I know you don't trust me, and you have every reason not to. But I just want to help you"Jade's eyes bore into Orion, his distrust palpable. "Wh

Talon's command echoed through the moonlit forest, his voice dripping with malice. "Destroy her! They charged towards Kalista and Jade, their massive forms shaking the ground beneath them.Only Apollo remained behind, watching the rogues advance towards the blue shield of energy. He had his reasons for staying back; he knew how tremendous the power of the gem was and with Kalista being a halfbreed wielding such power, he knew it would be disastrous.Jade's heart pounded in his chest as he watched the approaching rogue army. He gripped Kalista's hand and pulled her beside him."Are you okay?" he asked worriedly. "Tell me Salem," Jade snapped at her. "What is the curse? What will happen to my mate?"Salem shut her eyes so she wouldn't see the fear in Jade's eyes. If Jade knew what would happen to Kalista, it would break him. "Jade think about this," she tried to discourage him, but Jade was adamant."If you don't tell me, I will find out myself."Salem took a deep breath and let it out shakily. "Taking a unicorn's horn at first will kill it, because the horn is the source of their magic. It is like their life force. When cut off, it unbalances a unicorn's life. And after a while, the creature would die."Salem paused, trying to find ways to soften her words. But there was no other way. No matter how she put it, it would sound terrible."Well?" Jade prodded her when she remained silent."The unicorn would live for a few weeks trying to heal itself with its magic," Salem continued. "But in the end when it dies, whoever took its horn would die with it."It took Jade a moment to understand what

Soren began."You damn well do," Salem snapped. "You leave this village without a word to anyone, not even me, and you think you can just waltz back in and everyone will receive you with open arms?"Soren sighed. "Hear me out first," he pleaded. "And if you still feel I'm not welcomed here, I'll leave peacefully."His words silenced Salem and she folded her arms before her."Start talking," she said....Jade stared at his mate as she lay asleep in his arms. How he had missed those sparks. He buried his nose in the crook of her neck, inhaling her sweet scent. He had missed her.Orion moved closer to Salem and lightly touched her hand."Let's give them some privacy," he whispered to her.Salem nodded and quietly left the temple, with Orion and Mathius behind her. Seeing how Jade held Kalista like his life depended on it made her remember memories with her late husband. It had been so long since she felt a man's sincere touch. Everywhere had gone dark when the mist surrounded Kalista and Roland. It was just like that moment when she and Jade arrived at the village of the mist for the first time. They were in the village. It was when she finally allowed herself to relax that she noticed Roland's arm wrapped around her waist.Instantly feeling uncomfortable, she pushed out of his embrace and stared at him suspiciously."What?" Roland shrugged innocently."Don't you dare give me that helpless look," Kalista snapped, hands planted on her hips. "You have a lot of explaining to do. What are you? I know you're not human. How did you know about this village? How did you know about the rune? How did you make the rune glow so brightly..."Roland just stood back and watched her with a small smile. He had fallen. So hard. It took him just two days to be with her and he realized

Kalista tore through the forest like her life depended on it, which in a way, it did. As she ran, her eyes darted all around her. The moon was hidden behind thick blankets of clouds and there were no stars in the sky so the entire forest was plunged in darkness. But Kalista could see clearly. Her vision had been enhanced and so she ran without stopping. Occasionally she would look behind her, terrified that the humans were catching up with her but each time she turned, all she saw was darkness. Soon she got to the river, just as Roland had explained. Then she turned north and continued running. Roland had told her not to wait for him and she wouldn't. For a moment, she forgot about Roland and how strange he suddenly became. All she wanted was to return to the village of the mist and save Jade. He was all that mattered at that point.Soon she began to recognize where she was. That particular part of the forest looked so familiar and that was when she realized that she was on the pat

"Drop the dagger! With inhumane speed, she brandished the dagger and slashed off the horn of the unicorn."NO!" Percival yelled and charged towards her, sword gleaming in his hand.Kalista turned and faced him, dagger in one hand and the unicorn's horn in the other. Her eyes fell on the sharp tip of Percival's sword and she panicked. In that swift moment of panic, her eyes shifted, glowing bright gold. Her wolf surfaced she accidentally shifted. Wicked looking claws and pure white fur emerged from her hands and sharp pointed canines tore out of her mouth.Percival stopped halfway, his eyes opened in horror. Percival had just changed into his knight amour and was about to step outside when his eyes fell on the empty tray of food he had just consumed.A thought formed in his head. Maybe he could see Kalista before he began his night shift. He wanted her to get used to his presence around her. Also, though he tried to deny it, he also wanted to make sure she was in her room. He still had his suspicions about her and he felt she was connected to the beast somehow.Maybe it was all in his head. But it wouldn't hurt to be sure.He grabbed his sword and stepped outside the room.On his way to the inn, he met the other knights and he issued out orders to each of them, reminding them of the perimeters they were to guard. As the other knights hurried off to stand guard in their respective spots, Percival continued towards the inn.A second later, he halted and a frown settled on his face. "What's on your mind?" Roland asked as he strolled beside Kalista. They were on the path that led to the royal stables. Kalista had been lost in thoughts. The memories of the previous night played repeatedly in her mind amd she couldn't believe she had shifted uncontrollably again and killed people. It reminded her of what occurred in Northville before Jade took her away, how she had shifted uncontrollably and hurt people. "Are you worried about the murder of last night?" Roland asked again when Kalista remained quiet."Yes," Kalista lied, which was not really a lie. She was worried about someone discovering what she was. "Who knows when this beast would show up again. How can one be safe?""You don't have to worry about any of that," Roland assured her. "If the beast shows itself a second time, we will destroy it."Kalista said nothing else and just nodded. If only Roland knew the beast was walking beside him.
