Back at the realm of the lycans, a long distance away from Hayden where Alpha Xerxes ruled, there was another lycan kingdom that was ruled by a tyrant lycan.

His name was Talon Darkheart, a rogue lycan that ruled a community of rogues. His rogue pack, Darkheart pack, was the only pack that adamantly refused to swear allegiance to Hayden, the Supreme Pack where Alpha Xerxes ruled.

After many failed attempts to make Talon drop his rogue attitude and become part of Hayden, Alpha Xerxes decided to cut him off. But Talon committed a heinous crime years ago, one that ingnited the unbridled rage of Alpha Xerxes.

Talon attacked a human city and slaughtered every single innocent soul, both old and young. This was something Alpha Xerxes couldn't forgive. He ordered his lycan army to murder Talon's wife and son as punishment, and then banished Talon to the ends of the realm, a barren land where there was no sign of life, where Talon would wallow in misery for the rest of his im

At the mention of Orion, Apollo scowled and a dark expression took over his face. Orion was their late brother, the one senior to him, the second son. Years ago, Orion had left Hayden, claiming he wanted a pack of his own. He didn't want to be under the reign of their elder brother, Xerxes. So one morning, he grabbed his things and left Hayden. No one heard from Orion for years. It seemed he had faded into the world. No one knew if he was alive or dead, or if he had succeeded in creating a pack of his own. Until one day, Orion suddenly returned to Hayden. But he didn't return alone. He came with a human girl. His mate. Xerxes had been furious with him. The humans were never meant to know about the existence of the lycans, and were never meant to have a union with one. It was forbidden. But Orion didn't care that his mate was human. He claimed that the moon goddess had given him a human as his mate, and he was ready to mate with her. Xerxes couldn't do anything about it because O

The sun was slowly crawling out from the horizon when Jade finally stopped underneath a large oak tree and lowered Kalista who was still in a deep slumber to the ground. He lowered himself beside her and checked on her wounds, but to his uttermost surprise, there was none. Her wounds were totally healed. Even the spot where she had been shot with the silver bullet was healed while his own wounds were still slowly healing. Jade knew it was because of the gem's power within her that made her wounds heal so quickly. Now that he was sure she was safe and out of danger, he allowed himself to shut his eyes for a while. "Jade," Kalista whispered, finally awake. Jade's eyes snapped open and he quickly knelt beside her, helping her sit against the tree. "Are you alright, my love?" he asked worriedly. "Are you hurt anywhere?"Kalista shook her head. She felt perfectly fine. Her complexion was okay, her wounds were healed and she was clear-headed. Jade was the one who looked terrible and ye

Jade knew instantly that something was wrong. He had scouted the surrounding forest and caught sight of a deer. Just when he was about to stalk the oblivious animal, he felt it. An uneasy feeling within him. His thoughts went straight to Kalista. Totally ignoring the deer, he turned around and raced back to the spot where he left her. As he neared the particular tree, he hoped that it was just a gut feeling and Kalista was fine. Still, his uneasiness persisted. His heart skipped a bit when he got to the spot and discovered that Kalista wasn't where he left her. The first thing he did was to sniff the air and sure enough, he caught her scent. The refreshing smell of the wild forest. Maybe she hadn't returned from gathering the twigs to make a fire. He followed her scent into the forest, calling out her name in case she was closeby. It was when he saw the scattered twigs on the ground that he knew the feeling he felt earlier was not just his gut feeling. Someone had taken Kalista aw

Jade turned fully and faced Orion, using his body to shield Kalista. He regarded Orion suspiciously and voiced the questions on his mind. "How is it possible for a werewolf pack to be in the human realm?"Orion chuckled again, his gray eyes twinkling with amusement. "A typical question every Alpha would ask""Still you haven't answered it," Jade cut in. "Living in the human realm makes it better to exist undetected," Orion finally answered. "We don't have any enemies here, and we are far away from the next human village, Northville"A dark look appeared on Jade's face when he remembered how he had gone feral, massacring the entire inhabitants of Northville. He didn't want to relive the gory sight so he changed the discussion. "Why are you away from other packs?" he asked. "I'm sure you are aware of Hayden, the werewolf community. Why cut yourself off from your own kind?"The smile remained on Orion's face but in his eyes, a strange emotion flashed past. It was so quick that it went

Jade reclined against the single seat close to the window, staring up at the full moon. The glow of the moon illuminated the golden orbs of his iris's, eyes that were slightly unfocused. He was thinking of Hayden, his home. He had been gone for more than a year, and still he hadn't been able to retrieve the Soul Gem.Without the gem, Hayden would crumble. The werewolves would be rendered homeless, becoming an easy target for vicious rogues. His mind strayed to his father, and he wondered how the Alpha King was coping with the absence of the gem. As much as he tried to avoid it, his thoughts brought back the memories of his mother. She had died protecting the gem, and if he didn't find that gem, her death would be in vain."No!" Jade suddenly snapped. He couldn't let his sweet mother's death be in vain. He would find the Soul Gem and unleash his vengeance on the murderers. He would not stop until he had avenged her death.Suddenly becoming restless, he got up from the seat and that wa

The moonlight filtered through the room, casting eerie shadows on the walls as the heavy silence hung in the air. Jade's heart pounded in his chest, a mixture of shock, despair, and fury swirling within him. The news hit him like a physical blow, threatening to shatter his resolve. It couldn't be, be thought. It had to be a dream. Kalista couldn't be dead."No," he whispered, his voice barely audible, as if denying the reality could somehow change it. His eyes remained fixed on Kalista's motionless form on the bed, hoping furiously that she would open her eyes. Orion's face was a mix of sympathy and helplessness. He understood the depths of Jade's pain, having experienced the loss of a mate himself. The Alpha's own memories of grief seemed to resurface, mirroring the torment that Jade now faced. The room seemed to close in around Jade as he stood there, his mind a maelstrom of conflicting emotions. The past year had been a relentless pursuit of the Soul Gem, fueled by the memories of

"We can talk about this in the morning," he told her softly. "After you're out of these wet clothes and when you feel much better""Yes... I... I think that will be better," Orion added, his voice quivering slightly. Kalista cast a wary glance at him and totally ignored him. She gripped Jade's shirt weakly and stared into his eyes."It can't wait," she said, a strange urgency in her voice. "You need to know"Jade suddenly became suspicious. He had concluded in his mind that it had to be one of the shewolves that did it out of spite and jealousy. But now that Kalista insisted on telling him, coupled with the look of panic in her eyes, he knew it was more serious than he assumed."Fine," he finally agreed. He needed to let his warriors know that Apollo was the enemy, but with each move he made, his heart weakened the more. Finally giving up, he collapsed on the ground with one hand outstretched towards the doors where the warriors stood on the other side. His heart beat decreased and red spots appeared at the edges of his vision. The Alpha felt real fear for the first time. Fear of what would happen to Hayden once he died. And worst of all, fear for his son, Jade. Jade who was still searching for the gem would have no idea that his uncle was the enemy. "Forgive me... "Tell me Salem," Jade snapped at her. "What is the curse? What will happen to my mate?"Salem shut her eyes so she wouldn't see the fear in Jade's eyes. If Jade knew what would happen to Kalista, it would break him. "Jade think about this," she tried to discourage him, but Jade was adamant."If you don't tell me, I will find out myself."Salem took a deep breath and let it out shakily. "Taking a unicorn's horn at first will kill it, because the horn is the source of their magic. It is like their life force. When cut off, it unbalances a unicorn's life. And after a while, the creature would die."Salem paused, trying to find ways to soften her words. But there was no other way. No matter how she put it, it would sound terrible."Well?" Jade prodded her when she remained silent."The unicorn would live for a few weeks trying to heal itself with its magic," Salem continued. "But in the end when it dies, whoever took its horn would die with it."It took Jade a moment to understand what

Everywhere had gone dark when the mist surrounded Kalista and Roland. It was just like that moment when she and Jade arrived at the village of the mist for the first time. They were in the village. It was when she finally allowed herself to relax that she noticed Roland's arm wrapped around her waist.Instantly feeling uncomfortable, she pushed out of his embrace and stared at him suspiciously."What?" Roland shrugged innocently."Don't you dare give me that helpless look," Kalista snapped, hands planted on her hips. "You have a lot of explaining to do. What are you? I know you're not human. Kalista tore through the forest like her life depended on it, which in a way, it did. As she ran, her eyes darted all around her. The moon was hidden behind thick blankets of clouds and there were no stars in the sky so the entire forest was plunged in darkness. But Kalista could see clearly. Her vision had been enhanced and so she ran without stopping. Occasionally she would look behind her, terrified that the humans were catching up with her but each time she turned, all she saw was darkness. Soon she got to the river, just as Roland had explained. Then she turned north and continued running. Roland had told her not to wait for him and she wouldn't. For a moment, she forgot about Roland and how strange he suddenly became. All she wanted was to return to the village of the mist and save Jade. He was all that mattered at that point.Soon she began to recognize where she was. That particular part of the forest looked so familiar and that was when she realized that she was on the pat

"Drop the dagger! Now!"Percival's voice was both hard and harsh, and when Kalista saw the look in his eyes, she knew he was serious."I didn't want it to come to this," she said out loud and whirled around. With inhumane speed, she brandished the dagger and slashed off the horn of the unicorn."NO!" Percival yelled and charged towards her, sword gleaming in his hand.Kalista turned and faced him, dagger in one hand and the unicorn's horn in the other. Her eyes fell on the sharp tip of Percival's sword and she panicked. In that swift moment of panic, her eyes shifted, glowing bright gold. Her wolf surfaced she accidentally shifted. Wicked looking claws and pure white fur emerged from her hands and sharp pointed canines tore out of her mouth.Percival stopped halfway, his eyes opened in horror. Percival had just changed into his knight amour and was about to step outside when his eyes fell on the empty tray of food he had just consumed.A thought formed in his head. "What's on your mind?" Roland asked as he strolled beside Kalista. They were on the path that led to the royal stables. Kalista had been lost in thoughts. The memories of the previous night played repeatedly in her mind amd she couldn't believe she had shifted uncontrollably again and killed people. It reminded her of what occurred in Northville before Jade took her away, how she had shifted uncontrollably and hurt people. "Are you worried about the murder of last night?" Roland asked again when Kalista remained quiet."Yes," Kalista lied, which was not really a lie. She was worried about someone discovering what she was. "Who knows when this beast would show up again. How can one be safe?""You don't have to worry about any of that," Roland assured her. "If the beast shows itself a second time, we will destroy it."Kalista said nothing else and just nodded. If only Roland knew the beast was walking beside him.
