Lacey and Julien rode the rest of the way in silence. On the way, Lacey wondered what had happened to him to make him so hard and devoid of love. Although she had caught glimpses of his capacity for tenderness, she was sure that a woman had broken his heart, or maybe something else had happened to harden his heart. But she quickly pushed the thought aside when they turned left onto a narrow road lined with trees and his mansion came into view. Lacey was surprised to see that it wasn't a mansion at all… but a castle. And it was huge! Much bigger than her stepfather's mansion. She wondered how Julien could afford such extravagance. But when you are nearly immortal and invest wisely, you can accumulate a lot of wealth."Wow," Lacey said as the limo pulled to a stop in front of the castle. The stone walls were light gray, glistening in the sunlight, and a lush forest surrounded it. "This is gorgeous!" Her wolf itched to explore the surrounding forest, pleased with the amount of land to run
When Lacey followed Gwen into the castle, the room had a high vaulted ceiling and ornate crown molding along the edge. The walls were painted with a light gold overlay, causing them to sparkle, creating a magical affect. A huge crystal chandelier hung in the foyer and a long, curved staircase wound from the second floor. It was obvious that the interior of the castle had been redone. Every inch of it sparkled but wasn't overly done."This is the foyer...." Gwen stated the obvious, but Lacey said nothing, not wanting to add to Gwen's past cruel treatment. "And to the right is the dining room and the kitchen, and to the left is the parlor. Straight ahead is the Grand Ballroom, and upstairs are the bedrooms." Gwen smiled, obviously proud of the castle."How long have you worked here?" Lacey asked.Gwen shrugged. "For more years than I can count." Obviously, she was a shifter, but she didn't appear to be a day over nineteen. But shifters didn't age, as long as they didn't give up their wol
"Sorry, but I have to do this," Gwen said, giving Lacey a sheepish look. "This is your bedroom. Alpha Grey gave strict instructions that you were to remain in here until he comes for you." She shook her head, letting out a deep breath. "I'm so sorry."Lacey shrugged. "It's not your fault, Gwen. Don't worry about it. I'll use this time to organize my room."Gwen gave her a wholesome smile. "When I heard you were coming, I gave your room a thorough cleaning.""You heard I was coming?" Lacey asked, tilting her head to the side. Gwen nodded happily. "Yes! It was all arranged before Alpha Grey even left."Lacey's eyebrows pulled together in concern. "So, Julien arranged this with my parents before he had even left?"Gwen's eyes grew wide again. "I... I... I don't know. All I know is that he was going to visit your pack and bring back his mate."Lacey chuckled. "Oh, I'd bet Scar wasn't very pleased about that."Gwen giggled and then lowered her voice, pointing toward Lacey's bedroom. "I'll
When Lacey walked in, Julien sat at the head of the long dining table, and Scar was sitting kitty-corner from him to his right. Their heads were together, obviously enjoying a private joke, and she wondered if they were laughing about her. Julien looked up and his mouth nearly fell to the floor when he saw her.Scar looked her over, her lips curling in disgust. "What is she doing here."Suddenly, everyone's eyes were on her."Lacey! I'm glad you could join us!" Julien quickly closed the gap between them, and then looked at the pack filling the room, all dressed in their finest attire. It was clear that they were having a dinner party, and no one came for her. "Everyone, this is my new pledge and your future Alpha Queen, Princess Lacey Taregon."A rumble of welcome resonated throughout the room, but Lacey noticed that few met her gaze. "Lacey, I'm glad you're here. Maybe you can help settle an argument between Scar and me." Julien led her to a seat at the table to his left.Lacey smile
Morning sunshine shone through the window the next morning, bright in Lacey's eyes, nearly blinding her, alerting her to the start of a new day. But when she stretched, everything from the night before came rushing back. After Julien stormed out, she ate the steak, potato, and vegetables he had brought for her. At least he hadn't thrown it on the floor when he saw her with the tablet. She had been so hungry that she practically stuffed herself with the food, feeling nearly like a street urchin wanting to eat everything while she could. At least he had brought her food. Now that they were pledged, this was technically her pack, too. And if she let him run over her, the rest of the pack would think it was allowed. With wolves, dominance must be asserted… or you become an underling. And Lacey Taregan was no underling.Lacey sat up, realizing she was still wearing her sister's hand-me-down red dress from the night before. But first thing's first. She needed a shower. She checked to make s
"Well, thank you for coming." Lacey rose from her seat. Madame Pomeroy didn't budge, not taking the hint. "How do you like my designs?"Lacey turned her attention back to the clothing design sketches. "They look great." Then she turned to one and pointed. "But there's no need to make the wedding dress right now."The strange woman tilted her head to the side. "Why ever not?"Lacey sighed. "Because I don't intend to marry Julien until some things change." She closed the portfolio and handed it back to the woman. "But the rest of the designs are exquisite. Thank you.""Well...." The woman rose from her seat. "Welcome to the Harvest Moon Pack. It was nice to meet you, Princess. I'll have your clothes delivered soon.""Thank you so much." Then Lacey had an idea as she gave the woman a mischievous smile. "I'll walk you out."The woman smirked, obviously knowing what Lacey was up to. "That would be wonderful." Then she looped her arm in Lacey's and whispered, "I think I might start on the w
"So...." The man placed a hand on his chest. "My name is Chef Mastrano, at your service." He gave Lacey a slight bow and smiled. "What can I get for you?"Lacey shrugged. "I'm so hungry I could eat a horse. What do you have?""You're the princess, right?" She nodded.Chef Mastrano sighed. "Well, most of the shifters like steak. How's that with a baked potato?"Lacey's mouth practically started watering at the thought. "Sounds great. Could you cook it medium, please?""You got it!" His face lit up as if she had just asked him for Christmas. "Why don't you go into the dining room to wait and I'll bring it to you in just a bit."Lacey sighed. "Is there another room that's a bit more private where I may dine?"Chef Mastrano smiled. "There's a smaller dining room out the door to the right. It's a bit more private." He shrugged. "You can wait there, if you like, and I'll bring your meal to you momentarily.""That would be perfect." Lacey smiled. "Thank you." Then she headed out the door and
Lacey wasted no time. Even though she had just eaten, she was itching to run. Leaving her plate on the table, she wanted to seize the opportunity before Julien changed his mind. Lacey hurried from the room, through the foyer, and out the huge double doors of the castle.Outside, she stood on the porch and took a deep breath of fresh air, letting it fill her lungs. Then she ran toward the edge of the forest. Alone, she stripped off her clothes and hid them in a tree. Then she ran through the trees and leapt into the air, letting the shimmers run down her arms and over her body, and the red haze with black edges overtake her vision, landing on her huge white paws. Lacey dug into the lichen and pushed harder, propelling herself forward into the deep forest, enjoying the feel of the fresh air rush through her fur, and the feel of her muscles elongating, finally free. As she ran, she suddenly realized that she was nearly to Canada, so she stood at the top of a mountain, watching the view b
