Lacey and Julien rode the rest of the way in silence. On the way, Lacey wondered what had happened to him to make him so hard and devoid of love. Although she had caught glimpses of his capacity for tenderness, she was sure that a woman had broken his heart, or maybe something else had happened to harden his heart.

But she quickly pushed the thought aside when they turned left onto a narrow road lined with trees and his mansion came into view. Lacey was surprised to see that it wasn't a mansion at all… but a castle. And it was huge! Much bigger than her stepfather's mansion. She wondered how Julien could afford such extravagance. But when you are nearly immortal and invest wisely, you can accumulate a lot of wealth.

"Wow," Lacey said as the limo pulled to a stop in front of the castle. The stone walls were light gray, glistening in the sunlight, and a lush forest surrounded it. "This is gorgeous!" Her wolf itched to explore the surrounding forest, pleased with the amount of land to run and hunt.

Julien nodded, smiling. "Come along and I'll give you a tour."

Lacey was happy that he was now speaking to her in a civil tone, at least. Her positive remarks about the castle must have pleased him. For once, she did something right, not that she cared, but at least it may make her life here easier.

"So, where's our room?" Lacey looked over the castle, clearly intrigued.

Julien squinted and pointed up high. "You see the turret to the left?"

"Yes," she replied, excited.

"And that little window?"

"Yes." Her enthusiasm waned.

"That is your room." Julien smirked, gauging her reaction. It was clear that he found some sick pleasure in tormenting her.

The redheaded woman chuckled.

"I thought that we were to share a room," Lacey said without thinking. Actually, she was glad she wouldn't have to share a room with this overbearing beast.

Julien shook his head. "No. Not until we're married."

The redhead burst out laughing at Lacey. "He's not your mate yet!"

"Scarlett!" Julien growled.

Lacey scrunched up her nose, sick of the antics of this woman. "Who the h*ll do you think you are, talking to me that way?"

Scarlett stepped up to Lacey, nose to nose. "I am his Beta. And you are nothing… yet."

But Lacey wasn't about to back down. "I suggest you take a step back. I am soon to be the Alpha Queen and you will treat me as such."

Scarlett smirked, placing her hands on her hips. "Not if I can help it."

"Scar!" Julien yelled, then he turned to face Lacey. "Actually, you are to respect her," Julien said, stepping between them.

Lacey smirked, shaking her head. "She'll get no respect from me unless she respects me as the future Alpha Queen and your mate first."

Julien pulled her hair back, nearly breaking her neck again as the redhead smirked. "Actually, you will respect her… because I said so."

"Okay...." Lacey said, trying to pull free. "Are you sleeping with her?"

"No, she is my second in command." Julien shook his head and released her, throwing her toward the redhead. "This is Scar, short for Scarlett. She's been with me for a while now and you will give her the respect she deserves." Then he looked at Scar. "And you will accept Lacey as my future mate and Alpha Queen."

One corner of Scar's lip curled into a snarl, but she said nothing.

Lacey's eyes met his as she took a step closer to him. "She will get my respect when she earns it. Not before."

Scar growled, her eyes turning a bright red, and Lacey's wolf seethed for the kill, ready to take her on. But Julien held up a hand, stopping them both.

He stepped up close to Lacey again. "You will respect her, and you will do as I say." He smirked. "She's not going anywhere."

Lacey's eyes narrowed. "Then why didn't you choose her as your mate instead of me?"

Suddenly, a short young woman came out of the castle, obviously having heard the exchange. "Welcome home, sire."

Lacey laughed, shaking her head. So, he fancied himself the Lord of the Manor, huh? Okay... unless he really was that old. But then again, he didn't look a day over twenty-five, twenty-eight tops. But it could be possible.

Julien growled, his eyes flaring a bright gold as he faced Lacey. "Gwen is your maid. She will give you a tour of the castle and will show you to your room. Dress for dinner. We eat promptly at eight."

"I thought you were going to give me a tour," Lacey observed.

"Change of plans." Then he walked purposefully toward the castle, leaving Lacey alone with Scar.

"Stay out of my way." Scar smirked. "You're not his mate yet."

Lacey took a step closer to her. "And neither are you."

Scar snarled, and then walked purposefully into the castle.

"Ugg!" Lacey balled her fists at her sides. "They are so infuriating!"

"Hello." Gwen cautiously approached her, probably wondering if she was going to be as cruel as her master. "My name's Gwen. I'll be your maid."

Lacey forced herself to stop shaking, making an effort to calm down. After all, Gwen seemed nice enough. It wasn't her fault that her master was a jerk. But then again, the jerk was her future mate.

"Hello." Lacey forced a smile. "My name's Lacey Taregon."

Gwen bobbed a slight curtsy. "Yes, Princess. It's nice to meet you."

Lacey laughed despite herself. "Please. Don't call me princess. You can call me Lacey. In private, at least."

"Yes, Princ... er... Lacey," Gwen replied, appearing to relax a bit. "If you would be so kind as to follow me, I'll give you a tour of the castle."

Lacey nodded. "Thank you. That's very kind of you." As she followed the petite blonde girl into the castle, Lacey wondered what she had gotten herself in to... for the hundredth time.

When Lacey followed Gwen into the castle, the room had a high vaulted ceiling and ornate crown molding along the edge. The walls were painted with a light gold overlay, causing them to sparkle, creating a magical affect. A huge crystal chandelier hung in the foyer and a long, curved staircase wound from the second floor. It was obvious that the interior of the castle had been redone. Every inch of it sparkled but wasn't overly done."This is the foyer...." Gwen stated the obvious, but Lacey said nothing, not wanting to add to Gwen's past cruel treatment. "And to the right is the dining room and the kitchen, and to the left is the parlor. Straight ahead is the Grand Ballroom, and upstairs are the bedrooms." Gwen smiled, obviously proud of the castle."How long have you worked here?" Lacey asked.Gwen shrugged. "For more years than I can count." Obviously, she was a shifter, but she didn't appear to be a day over nineteen. But shifters didn't age, as long as they didn't give up their wol

"Sorry, but I have to do this," Gwen said, giving Lacey a sheepish look. "This is your bedroom. Alpha Grey gave strict instructions that you were to remain in here until he comes for you." She shook her head, letting out a deep breath. "I'm so sorry."Lacey shrugged. "It's not your fault, Gwen. Don't worry about it. I'll use this time to organize my room."Gwen gave her a wholesome smile. "When I heard you were coming, I gave your room a thorough cleaning.""You heard I was coming?" Lacey asked, tilting her head to the side. Gwen nodded happily. "Yes! It was all arranged before Alpha Grey even left."Lacey's eyebrows pulled together in concern. "So, Julien arranged this with my parents before he had even left?"Gwen's eyes grew wide again. "I... I... I don't know. All I know is that he was going to visit your pack and bring back his mate."Lacey chuckled. "Oh, I'd bet Scar wasn't very pleased about that."Gwen giggled and then lowered her voice, pointing toward Lacey's bedroom. "I'll

When Lacey walked in, Julien sat at the head of the long dining table, and Scar was sitting kitty-corner from him to his right. Their heads were together, obviously enjoying a private joke, and she wondered if they were laughing about her. Julien looked up and his mouth nearly fell to the floor when he saw her.Scar looked her over, her lips curling in disgust. "What is she doing here."Suddenly, everyone's eyes were on her."Lacey! I'm glad you could join us!" Julien quickly closed the gap between them, and then looked at the pack filling the room, all dressed in their finest attire. It was clear that they were having a dinner party, and no one came for her. "Everyone, this is my new pledge and your future Alpha Queen, Princess Lacey Taregon."A rumble of welcome resonated throughout the room, but Lacey noticed that few met her gaze. "Lacey, I'm glad you're here. Maybe you can help settle an argument between Scar and me." Julien led her to a seat at the table to his left.Lacey smile

Morning sunshine shone through the window the next morning, bright in Lacey's eyes, nearly blinding her, alerting her to the start of a new day. But when she stretched, everything from the night before came rushing back. After Julien stormed out, she ate the steak, potato, and vegetables he had brought for her. At least he hadn't thrown it on the floor when he saw her with the tablet. She had been so hungry that she practically stuffed herself with the food, feeling nearly like a street urchin wanting to eat everything while she could. At least he had brought her food. Now that they were pledged, this was technically her pack, too. And if she let him run over her, the rest of the pack would think it was allowed. With wolves, dominance must be asserted… or you become an underling. And Lacey Taregan was no underling.Lacey sat up, realizing she was still wearing her sister's hand-me-down red dress from the night before. But first thing's first. She needed a shower. "But there's no need to make the wedding dress right now."The strange woman tilted her head to the side. "Why ever not?"Lacey sighed. "Because I don't intend to marry Julien until some things change." She closed the portfolio and handed it back to the woman. "But the rest of the designs are exquisite. Thank you.""Well...." The woman rose from her seat. "Welcome to the Harvest Moon Pack. It was nice to meet you, Princess. I'll have your clothes delivered soon.""Thank you so much." Then Lacey had an idea as she gave the woman a mischievous smile. "I'll walk you out."The woman smirked, obviously knowing what Lacey was up to. "That would be wonderful." Lacey wasted no time. Even though she had just eaten, she was itching to run. Leaving her plate on the table, she wanted to seize the opportunity before Julien changed his mind. Lacey hurried from the room, through the foyer, and out the huge double doors of the castle.Outside, she stood on the porch and took a deep breath of fresh air, letting it fill her lungs. Then she ran toward the edge of the forest. Alone, she stripped off her clothes and hid them in a tree. Then she ran through the trees and leapt into the air, letting the shimmers run down her arms and over her body, and the red haze with black edges overtake her vision, landing on her huge white paws. Lacey dug into the lichen and pushed harder, propelling herself forward into the deep forest, enjoying the feel of the fresh air rush through her fur, and the feel of her muscles elongating, finally free. As she ran, she suddenly realized that she was nearly to Canada, so she stood at the top of a mountain, watching the view b

One Year Later...."Ready?" Lacey's mother asked, smiling proudly as she looked into Lacey's eyes. After the war Between the Packs, Lacey had offered to let her mother stay with her, but now that Camari was truly free to do as she pleased, she had decided to become a member of The Shadow Pack, Arkin's pack. Lacey was glad that her mother and Arkin had found one another again... after all these years. And it was strange. Thorn and Camari had been worried about the other dying if one left, but standing before her now, Camari was no worse for wear. Lacey guessed that it was because the Mating Bond between them had already faded years ago. There had been too much water under the bridge between them before he had passed. But Lacey pushed the thought aside, determined not to let anyone ruin this day. Lacey nodded. "Yes. I'm ready."One corner of Camari's lips curled into a smile. "Well, then. You shouldn't keep your Mate waiting."Lacey headed through the living room, dressed in a full-leng

"No. I just want to get this over with."Julien pulled her to a stop at the top of their stairwell and placed his hands on her shoulders, looking into her eyes. "Lacey, it couldn't be helped. They attacked you. Remember that." Then he let out a deep breath. "If you hadn't fought them, then they would have killed you. It was self-defense."Lacey nodded. "Yes, I know. But it doesn't make it any easier."Julien nodded, understanding. "Let me know if you need me."But then she pulled him close. "Julien, I'm proud of you tonight. You are a wonderful Alpha Supreme. Lacey sighed, thinking. "Julien, I'll be honest with you."He rubbed his thumb across the top of her hand. "Yes, please do."Lacey nodded, and then looked into his eyes. "A year would be plenty of time to show his allegiance and his loyalty. Then after a year, if he proves unworthy, then you can strip him of his title." Lacey patted his hand, looking into his eyes. "Give him a chance. I think he'll make a strong, loyal Alpha if given the chance to do so. Especially now that Thorn is gone."Julien nodded and then kissed her hand, too. Then he looked over at Roth. "Roth, I know that you didn't make the decision to stand with the rogue wolves and Rex against me." Clearly, Julien was giving him the benefit of the doubt. "Thorn did that. But now you have the chance to do the right thing."Roth leaned forward, folding his hands on the table. About a week later, after everything had settled down, Julien called the very first council meeting of all the packs in the area. And it was mandatory that all Alphas attend. Julien hosted it in the smaller dining area adorned with Julien's paintings. Although it was much smaller than the grand dining hall, it would be big enough for this meeting. Lacey had ensured that a meal was properly prepared for the meeting and all packs were given a room if they chose to stay overnight. When Eric and Seth walked in with Arkin, they both shook Julien's hand as he and Lacey greeted the Alphas and pack leaders at the door."Julien, I'm so glad you did this," Arkin said, looking around at all the different factions. "It's about time we all start working together.""Precisely," Julien agreed. "I truly appreciate you coming. There's some things I'd like to discuss with you.""Sounds good," Arkin said. "Whatever you need."Julien nodded and then turned to greet the other Alphas coming in behind them

Lacey waited inside the compound along with the rest of The Harvest Moon Pack, all weary from the battle. "Anyone in need of medical attention, go immediately to the infirmary!" Misty stood at the door and checked a shifter's arm as he came in. "You. Go to the infirmary." Then she stopped three young shifters. "You three look exhausted. Are you hurt?""No, ma'am," the three said in unison. Misty nodded. "Good. Then go upstairs to take a bath and get some rest. Food will be served in the dining hall soon.""Yes, Ma'am." Then the three of them headed up the stairs.Misty spent her time directing the others instead of taking care of herself. "Julien!" Lacey yelled when he came walking through the door. Rex paced like a caged animal, ready to strike. At first, Julien wished he could talk to Rex in their wolf forms. But they couldn't, since they were no longer from the same pack. But it was just as well. Long ago, they had already everything that needed to be said. And it had done no good. This fight was inevitable and a long time coming.Julien waited for Rex to make the first move. But he had gone through too much, sacrificed too much to lose to Rex. He wanted everything… power, money, his pack… even his wife. And Lacey was the one thing that Julien would never give up. The war was won and the Wildclaws and The Silver Pack subdued, but this battle was far from over. Julien knew that a war had been raging in Rex for a long time and wouldn't be quelled.Suddenly, Rex jumped at Julien, but he ducked, flipping him over his back. He landed hard on the cold stairs, crumbling under his weight.Julien stepped on his throat, holding him down, hesitating. Julien didn't want to have to kill Rex

Although Lacey couldn't hear Rex, she didn't need to. She knew exactly what he had come for. Exactly what he wanted. "Julien!" Lacey yelled in the Pack Mind. "I need you over here! Now!" "I'm a little busy at the moment, but I'm on my way!" In the background, she heard the keening of a wolf and then a crunch as the scream cut off abruptly.Lacey sighed as Rex took a step closer. "It's Rex.""On my way!" She could hear Julien's footfalls in the background of the Pack Mind. Lacey stood her ground just outside of the glass double doors of the castle. "Young warriors, stand tall! Steady! Do not let them breach… no matter what!""Aye!" They all took their fighting stances, willing to fight to the death if it was asked of them. Lacey hoped she didn't have to. Rex took a purposeful step onto the bottom stair, his eyes trained on Lacey, licking his lips as one side of his mouth curled into a sinister smile.Lacey took her fighting stance, a low, guttural growl erupting from deep within her

In a short time, Lacey ran onto the grounds of The Harvest Moon Pack, along with Julien and The Shadow Pack. As wolves fought viciously in the clearing, it was clear they were under attack. Lacey hated to have to fight her family, but if they knowingly stood against her and her pack, then she couldn't just stand by and let it happen.
