Freya's P.O.V The woman dropped to the floor mid-jump, right after the shot reverberated inside the room. Both Alex and I turned to face the cell door, to find out who had fired the shot…to find Cameron standing with a gun in his hand, followed closely by Sarah. My heart hammered against my ribcage and I desperately wanted to run into the arms of my mate, to be surrounded by his embrace, but my head turned towards the woman instead. "Wh…what?" I swallowed hard, hoping and praying that I didn't see blood gushing out of her body. Alex had gone unnaturally still next to me and I feared that he might snap if I touched him. "She's alive." Cameron's voice was hard, angry, as he stepped inside the cell and grabbed a hold of my hand. "Get to the Alpha's chambers, Alex. We need to talk." With that, he began dragging me out of the cell and out of the dungeons…err, holding rooms. I glanced back to find Alex still standing lik
Alex's P.O.V I don't know how long I stood there, looking down at my mate's fallen form, but it wasn't until Sarah placed a hand on my shoulders that I was finally able to snap out of my trance. "You should go back up," I told her quietly, my voice sounding hoarse to my own ears. "I'll follow soon." "I'll wait, Alex." Sarah came to stand beside me. "I know just how difficult this is for you, even though I can't even begin to understand your pain." "Why did it have to be like this, Sarah?" I tried but failed to hide the tremor in my voice as I knelt down next to her and lifted my mate up carefully into a sitting position. "Why did it have to be like this?" But Sarah didn't have any answers for me as I unlodged the tranquilizer from her shoulder. Blood oozed out of the wound that had been caused by the tranq bullet hitting her at too close proximity. Placing her more comfortably so that
Alex's P.O.V "You called me, Alpha?" I bowed my head, knowing what was about to come, but still, it hurt to listen to the words that I had been dreading. "You have disappointed me, Alex." Alpha Charles's voice wasn't harsh; it was just soft and calm…like he really was disappointed in me. And that was what hurt even more. If only he yelled and got angry… "I'll resign from my duties, if that helps the pack." I kept my head lowered as I spoke. "I know I've disappointed everyone. But that rogue is my mate. I couldn't have abandoned her, Alpha, not even for the pack." "Our mates are our world; I know that more than you ever would." Alpha Charles told me now, rising from his seat to come to stand in front of me. "There is a cellar at the outskirts of the pack for this very reason. To keep prisoners or wolves who we are yet to determine if they are friends or foes. You could have taken her there." His voice w
Alex's P.O.V Silence, long silence. No one would know what to say after Freya finished retelling my mate's dream. A bloody horrible dream. If it was not just a dream, I could not imagine how she got through it-watching her dearest family die cruelly in front of her. Just hearing it could make my heart clenched. Her pale face emerged in my mind again, I should have found her sooner. Soon before she experienced all these miserable things. My wolf also felt bad for her. "I'm sorry," Freya apologized, holding a hand in front of her mouth as she shuddered, "Every time I-" "You don't have to anymore." I promised her, I was grateful for what she did for us, "You shouldn't have had to this time either. Cameron could've told me in your stead." "I know, but I was the one who saw her nightmares," she removed her hand and took a deep breath as Cameron rubbed her back comfortingly. "When she's…able to u
Alex's P.O.V I knocked on the doors to the healer's private quarters later that night, guilt filling every cell in my body until it was difficult to breathe. What had I done? "Your wolf got overwhelmed," Alpha Charles had told me right after the incident this evening, in a futile attempt to make me feel better. "And since Daisy had been the bearer of bad news, you went for her. Luckily, Cameron worked quickly and got her out before you could do too much damage." Too much damage? I had seen the blood splattered all over the place…on the table, the walls and even the couch. That wasn't just a mere scratch. It was worse than I had expected and the fact that she was now taking her sweet time in opening her door…it told me that Daisy wasn't in a very nice condition. A good five minutes later, Daisy's mate Ethan opened the door, a weary expression on his face. I remembered seeing him in the field this morning. He was one of the soldiers who h
Alex's P.O.V The next morning, I stood in one of the darkest corners of the conference room, blended with the shadows as Alpha Charles and Cameron sat in front of the huge plasma screen, connecting a call to Alpha Krimson. Alpha Charles had already sent word to him last night and the answer had come immediately after. Alpha Krimson was interested in talking to us. But even as my heart raced with hope, my palms sweating from nervousness, there was still this lingering fear at the back of my mind about the outcome of this meeting. What if he asked for something that was too much for us to provide? What if he asked for land? Or more of our soldiers? We weren't a humongous pack and to lose more soldiers at this point of time? It'll be a catastrophe. Yes, we had the help of the witch clan that was now a part of Freya's extended family. And the Council of Witches was also on our side. But we couldn't utilize outside resources in our day to day lives. It would gi
Rogue Wolf's P.O.V "This is the last time we'll need to move, okay?" Our mother leaned down so she was eye level with my sister. "Do you understand, sweetheart?" "You promise?" Wet amethyst eyes met my mother's and she hesitated. I saw her swallow hard before she pressed a kiss to my little sister's forehead and closed the door of the car. "Be good, okay girls." She told us as she made her way to the passenger's seat while my dad started the car. "Okay." The pout on her lips made her look even more adorable, but I knew my baby sister was sad to leave behind her new friends. She was only six, so she didn't understand. But I was ten; I knew that mom's promises were false. Because we never stop moving. "It'll be fun, you know," our dad turned to look behind at us, his smile radiant. "Think of it as an adventure. Some people spend their entire life in only one place. But not us! We are not boring
Alex's P.O.V The antidote arrived the next morning, along with the contract. It was sealed in a vial, to be injected into one of the main arteries that would lead directly to the heart. Cameron, Freya and I gathered around the Alpha's desk, along with Darcia and Sarah, as the Alpha opened the seal on the box using the code that Alpha Krimson had sent specifically to the Alpha and one that none of us were made aware of. It was like opening the Holy Grail. A burst of hope and fear. My emotions threatened to overwhelm me, but I held on with teeth gritting strength. My heart thundered inside my chest as the Alpha took out the transparent vial. The liquid inside the vial was colorless as well and for a second, I was anxious if we had been cheated. But thankfully, Alpha Charles had thought about that possibility as well and Daisy and the pack doctor Damien Shaw, who usually looked after the human mates of the pack, stood outside the office, ready to take the sample fo
