Ch. 10 Going Under

Peering over the sheer cliffside, I study the way the chalky whites, violets, and deeper purples of the mountain disappear into the inky black lake below. Moonlight dances on the mirror-like surface and my skin prickles with the anticipation of disappearing beneath it.

I can already feel the breath being stolen from my lungs as I tumble over the edge, free-falling with nothing but moonbeams surrounding me. I feel the exhilaration building in my chest, just a glimmer but with a promise to be so much more. I’m about to give in to the urge to leap when someone calls out to me.

“Hey, shortcake!” Aspen is heading my way, Asher half a step behind him. “Whatcha doin’ over here by yourself? Looks like the party is over there.”

He points to where Jake and his bartender boyfriend are busy tapping kegs for the gathering crowd. Someone must have leaked our plans for the evening and now half the pack is here.

“It’s beautiful, isn’t it?” I turn my gaze back to the lake below.
