Your whole life flashes in front of your eyes when you take your last breaths, they say, but all I could see was the red lights from the headlamp of my brand new Maserati.
I was always used to the cold because I was the most powerful woman in the pack's army but this time, laying on the cold concrete ground, I couldn't help but shiver.
Something felt different about this cold. It was a bad kind of cold.
Something harsh kicked my sides, making me lay on my back harshly and it took me a moment to realize I had been hit by heavy boots.
A small smile played on my lips because this person, whoever it was had done me the favor of letting me see the starry sky.
If I was going to die, I should see the sky one last time, right?
The person crouched down and looked me dead in the eye.
All I could see was his red glowing eyes because the rest of his face was masked.
Coward.
"Beg for your life and I might just spare you," he said in a sickly sweet voice.
"Fuck you," I bit back and spat on his face.
The anger that radiated off him from my action made me smile for a second but that didn't last long because my face fell to the side and a stinging pain on my cheeks followed.
"Stupid bitch," he said angrily.
I was weak.
I could feel the wolfsbane they had injected in me seep into every vein in my body.
My face was bloodied and the knife on my ankle was twisted painfully, eating at every bit of flesh.
Every fiber of my body begged me, protested, but I had to do it.
I couldn't go down without a fight.
I wasn't the most powerful person in the pack for nothing, so with the last strength I could muster and with the speed of light, I lifted myself to a sitting position and head-butted him square on the face.
He staggered for a while and muttered a string of curses under his breath before he regained his composure.
"Still have that fire in you, I see," he said with a chuckle.
He pulled out another injection from his pocket and stabbed the wolfsbane into my thigh.
I was blinded with the pain but I didn't dare make a sound.
I couldn't give him the satisfaction he wanted, so instead, I maintained the firm smile on my lips.
"Let's see. I should probably have a little fun with you before you leave this world," he said and traced his fingers from my face down to the swell of my breasts to my stomach.
I was paralyzed with pain that I couldn't move.
I just lay there, waiting for death as my mind played back to earlier that evening.
"Andrea, do you really have to go? You only just got back," my father said as I searched for my car keys.
"Dad, we talked about this already," I rolled my eyes.
"She has it deep," my younger sister, Galia chuckled and I sent her a glare.
I had just come back from an eight months training.
I was the leader of the pack army, hence, it was my responsibility to train new recruits.
My plan to have a nice, warm dinner with my dad and sister after eight months of surviving on roasted fish and wild fruits was thrown out the window the moment I got his text message.
"Don't you want to spend time with your old man? Don't you love me anymore?" My dad asked, pulling the emotional blackmail card.
"Not working," I said in a flat tone. "I'll be back after dinner. Don't wait up for me," I said and placed a kiss on his balding head. "Bye, stink," I called out to my younger sister.
"Use protection," she yelled and from my peripheral vision, I saw my dad sending a throw pillow her way, hitting her square on the face.
Well-deserved.
I got to the parking lot and entered my Maserati that had cost me an arm and I turned on the engine and it purred to life.
"I missed you too, baby," I cooed and looked at my reflection in the rearview mirror.
My jet black hair was in a high ponytail and some loose strands framed my soft features.
My baby blue eyes shone brightly and I sighed in contentment as I pulled out of the parking lot of my father's mansion.
My father didn't hold any prestigious position in the pack but he was well-respected because of his wealth and my position as the leader of the pack's army.
My mother had died few years after giving birth to Galia and even though we were two years apart, we had very different personalities.
While I was strict and uptight, she was more easygoing and even though I didn't show it, I loved her to the ends of the earth and would do anything for her.
My phone in the passenger seat pinged, pulling me out of memory lane and I felt around for it.
"Can't wait to see you tonight, baby," the text message read and a wide grin covered my face.
Today was our fifth year anniversary and my boyfriend, the pack's beta had planned something special.
At 23, I hadn't found my mate and Jason and I had planned to mark each other when I come back and I couldn't be any happier.
"What if he wants to propose?" I asked my wolf excitedly.
"I don't know, Andrea. Something isn't right," she muttered.
I noticed she had been feeling down all day but I narrowed it down to the fact that she was worn out from all the rigorous trainings.
Ignoring her, I put a smile on my face. I wasn't about to let any negative energy ruin what was probably going to be the best night of my life.
Just as I was about to make a turn to the venue, my car was hit harshly and thrown to the side of the road and just as I stepped out to inspect the damage done on my car, wolfsbane was injected into my back.
The person was as fast as lightning so I wasn't quick enough to give a counter attack, which led to my current position.
The last thing I remembered before a sharp claw dug into my chest, pulling my heart out of ribcage was hearing an oddly familiar voice and it wasn't the man I was interacting with earlier.
It was someone else.
Someone I was certain I knew.
"Goodbye Andrea."
My brain felt fuzzy as I heard muffled voices. I didn't know where I was because my eyes were still closed but I could tell wherever I was was very cold, probably zero degrees because I was literally freezing. The sound of happy chatter and laughter got even louder and I tightened my eyes closed because I could already feel the headache forming in the bridge of my nose. Was the afterlife this noisy? I slowly opened my eyes and I wish I didn't because the acrid smell of the place hit me square in the face. "Fuck," I groaned as I scrunched up my nose. I slowly got up from the fetal position I was on the floor and sat up, taking in my surroundings. I was in a small, cramped bathroom and there were white pills all over the ground and an empty bottle on the side. "What's going on?" I muttered as I tried to remember anything from the last 24 hours and it all came back rushing to me. Coming back from the camp, driving to meet my boyfriend, having an accident, brutally beaten and
A voice in the corner spoke up just as blood trickled down my skin. "Let her go, Soph."It was a male voice. I looked at the direction where it had come from but no matter how much I squinted my eyes to see this person, it was near impossible due to how dark the area he sat was. I couldn't see him but I knew I got a very weird vibe off him. "I really think it's time to get rid of this bitch," the woman, who still had her hands wrapped around me but not as tightly as before, spoke. That can be arranged," the man's cold voice spoke and my jaw tightened. From where he sat, he clapped his hands together and everyone turned to face him, myself included. "Get ready, everyone. He'll be here soon," he announced and walked away but not before sending one last look my way. "Count yourself lucky," the woman spat before shoving me softly to the side and I fell on my butt. Perfect. "Get up," someone said and before I could look up, a gasp escaped my lips as a glass of cold water was empt
Ares' pov"Let them begin," I said into the receiver and tossed the phone to the side. I growled at the pile of work that stared back at me on the table. Watching a stupid maid inspection was the least of my worries. But it's the job I need to do in person. My maid should be someone I could trust with. I ran my fingers through my hair as I picked up the first file. "What's this rubbish?" I growled and tossed the first presentation into the wastebasket next to me. After going through a couple more files and thrashing them like the first, I threw my head back on the chair and my eyes landed on the large screen in front of me. Just before I could look away, my eyes caught a redhead. Well. I'd say she was beautiful but that wasn't what had caught my attention because I'd seen a lot of beautiful women in my long life. What caught my attention was her bold stance and the way she stared at Jason while he briefed them about the inspection. She was easily the smallest amongst all the
"What?" I gawked at him. "What?" Jason turned to me. "Do you have a problem with this as well? Because you seem to have a problem with everything," he said. I squared my shoulders and pulled my best fake smile. "There's no problem," I said. "Good," he nodded once and looked away. I muttered a string of curses under my breath. Cooking? Why?! I managed to do the laundry because I did a lot of that when I was away at camp and didn't have access to the washing machine and the cleaning because I helped clean the house most times when I wasn't so busy with work, but cooking? That was where I drew the line. I didn't know the first thing about that. Why didn't they give us tasks like shooting targets on a moving horse or something? I groaned inwardly as I watched Jason speak. I'd never felt the urge to slap someone across the face like I felt like doing Jason. He had been picking on me all day. Was he always this annoying and I didn't notice because I was blinded with love? Ye
“Me?” I pointed at my chest.Don't blame me, but this came as a surprise because I knew I hadn't done as much as so many other people. How was it possible that I had been chosen?Jason gave me a pointed look that said he thought I was an idiot before looking away.“Get your things and meet me outside in five,” he said without sparing me another glance and walked out with the lady who had previously introduced herself as Clara.I rolled my eyes at his snobbish behavior and vaguely wondered if he had always been that way.Well, I didn't mind his behavior as long as I would be getting out of here.Speaking of which, I turned around to meet scornful glares and some girls had their hands over their mouths as they giggled behind them.“What's funny?” I snapped. My reaction must have surprised them because more than a couple of gasps were heard.“She really back-talks now,” one girl whispered to the other girl beside her.Well, duh.“Oh, nothing,” one of the girls, out of the abundant kindne
“Shut up and sit like the pretty maid that you are. Know your place and remain there,” he growled. He didn't let me finish. Fine. Jason. Fine.I stared at him for a few seconds before rolling my eyes and looking out the window.Surprisingly, we were already pulling into the Alpha's castle. The car soon rolled to a stop in front of the house and I hopped out of the car, wanting to get away from Jason as soon as possible before my anger hit the ceiling, but the elegance I had imagined while exiting the car wasn't exactly how it happened and from how I overstepped, the next thing I knew the world was tilting to the side and I fell face first on the ground.“Oww,” I groaned and rubbed my palm flat on my nose to ease the pain.Jason chuckled and Clara snorted as they walked past me.“Competence indeed,” Jason said under his breath but clear enough for me to hear.He was mocking me.“Yeah, thanks for your help,” I said sarcastically and rolled my eyes before helping myself up.I dusted my
Ares' pov“Good night….I mean…good day, Alpha,” the voice of whoever had picked the intercom stuttered and I rolled my eyes.“Send the new maid up,” I said firmly.“Wha…wha…”The long beep followed as I ended the call, not having any time to mince words.I knew the effect I had on people and I loved it. I loved to exercise control and power while instilling fear in people. I loved it that way. That was who I was and I wasn't changing.I didn't even know why I requested to see the new maid. Maybe it was her confidence during the tests or just my wolf sending signals to the rest of my body and messing up with my logical thinking.I turned back to the screen of my laptop and scrolled aimlessly.I couldn't concentrate.I hadn't been able to since…“Fuck!” I groaned and hit my fist on the table, not enough to break it.I'd had my table changed more than five times this month and we're barely on the sixteenth day.“This won't do,” I shook my head and stood up, walking straight to the bathr
I stared at him like he had grown a second head.Maybe he has.“Mate,” he repeated, more surely this time.I frowned and my hands fell on my sides. I tried to feel it.Yes, there was a stir somewhere deep inside me but nothing else.I'd heard tales of how mates felt when they found each other but I felt almost nothing. Was this a joke?I wanted to laugh in his face but the look he gave me made even me hold my tongue.Different emotions crossed his eyes at once from anger to sadness to pain and was that….regret?“No,” I said inwardly. This was the last thing I needed.I didn't need a mate. Not now.And especially not one that was looking at me like he wanted to rain fire and brimstone over my head.“Mate,” he said and this time, every emotion in his voice and eyes were replaced with just two.Hate and disgust.Right at that moment, I knew it.I didn't need to be told.I knew what was running through his mind.It was as clear as day.“I….”That was my cue.I cut him off and beat him to
