JOHN

“Wow! Can you imprint, too?”

‘Pardon?’

“Well, like in the movie. When you see someone, you know, it’s like gravity… Wait, how can I understand you? Does your wolf talk, too?”

OK, now. My sister was outta this planet, right? I just told her I could shift into a wolf. Well, I actually shifted into one in front of her, and the first thing she asked me was if I could have a mate. Is she for real now?

She stood up and came beside me. She placed her hand inches from my fur.

‘I can talk in your mind. Just think of responding to me and I can hear you in mine, I guess.’ Hoping like it could work just like with my mother.

Her head was tilted towards mine, and I saw her concentrating.

‘Can I … touch you?’ I heard her voice in my head.

Bingo! She was a natural. She made it on her first attempt!

‘Of course…!” I was so excited that she took it so well. ‘Annelise?’ I asked while her hand tapped my back, and she started moving it like a caress.

“Oh, your fur is so soft. I like your wolf, John.” S

ARIADNE“Wow, this dress is stunning.” Annelise marveled at the dress on the hanger.Α she-wolf from our territory had a major store with hundreds of formal and wedding gowns and also a smaller shop in the territory. The moment I found out that Annelise was coming, I called her, and she brought a large variety of dresses in Annelise’s proportions in less than two hours. We were in one of the living rooms in the packhouse, and the shop owner was showing us dresses, but Annelise’s eyes were stuck in a stunning emerald-green dress with decorative stones that sparkled in the light.“It must cost a fortune to buy one of these!” She exclaimed, and the she-wolf gave an affirmative nod.“Don’t worry, hun, whatever you choose is already paid for by the Alpha.”Great. Did she really need to say that?Annelise turned her nose up in disdain. David had already paid for my dress and told the she-wolf that he would take care of whatever I needed.“She means your brother, Annelise. John had already bo

ARIADNE“You know where to find everything.” He announced and went out of the closet, and I found myself nodding, unable to utter a word, as I stepped inside and started opening the drawers. He had kept everything: my clothes, my shoes, my sunglasses, my bags, my underwear. Why?I remember the place where we had the jewelry, but an unexplained urge made me open all the drawers and cupboards in order to see my old belongings once more. Finally, I reached the glass cabinet with all the jewels. I inspected them, picked one set for me and one for Annelise, and exited the closet.“Thank you. I’ll return them right after the ceremony.”“You don’t have to. They’re yours anyway.” He said firmly.“You know that I can’t keep them, so I’ll bring them back.” I stated. He didn’t say anything but headed to the round table and grabbed something from there.“Here.” He showed me the two pieces he had in his hands. The first was a beautiful golden round necklace with a moonstone and little diamonds surr

ANNELISEI looked one more time in the mirror, and I couldn’t recognize the woman who was staring back at me.Yeah, it was still me, but a nice hairdo and makeup could really do miracles. This is the most attractive I’ve ever been.I must admit, I’ve never attended such a formal event as tonight’s gathering, so I’ve never had the opportunity to wear something as elegant — not that I could afford it to be honest — or have professionals do my hair and makeup.Remembering all that transpired today, I let out a sigh.I landed in the USA, and I’d totally forgotten that I didn’t have my brother’s address, so when I got into the cab, I was just looking at the driver, embarrassed. Excusing myself and red from the shame that I wouldn’t use his services, I gave him a €10 note, hoping he could somehow use it because I didn’t have any dollars with me, and headed to the first bench I found, dragging my small suitcase behind me.I turned on my mobile phone and called John, my brother. ANNELISEI shivered again at the action, which for sure was weird for a first encounter, but somehow felt so familiar. So right. So, to the point.“I…” I stuttered, lost for words. Who was I kidding? I wasn’t just lost for words. My mind was also wandering. I couldn’t make sense of what had just transpired.I couldn’t even think straight. If you asked me now how much 1+1 is, I’d say, ‘A thousand?’Great Annelise! You just humiliated yourself in front of this gorgeous man whose name I didn’t know, but the more I stared at him, the more familiar he seemed.“Thank you…” I finally said. The cogs in my head worked hard to think of who this sexy stranger might be, and my train of thought seemed to return to me as it finally registered that I was staying in a room in Ian’s apartment. My brother’s best friend and his Beta. John had talked to me about him, and I came to like the guy for his kind personality without even knowing him or having seen his face.Oh, God, his face. JOHNMy feet couldn’t take me fast enough to the ground floor and out of the entrance of the packhouse. Seriously now, the people who were busy preparing everything and our packmates who had started arriving were all giving me intense looks. But as soon as my Mama fixed my tie, and I guaranteed that she would dance with Dad—I tried to make him happy because it was his day as much as it was mine—I rushed out of the apartment, sprinting down the stairs.I was pacing in front of the porch for their car to arrive when Dad joined me.“Nervous?”“You have no idea,” I murmured.“Don’t lose your hopes if she doesn’t come today. We’ll find a way.” He reassured me, tapping my shoulder. Yes, Mama had a great idea to visit and somehow learn where she was attending the boarding school. However…“I feel it in my…” gut I wanted to say, but I stopped as soon as I saw Alpha Augustin’s car and his entourage—two other cars following—take the turn towards the packhouse. Yeah, I had a gut feeling that our

George was attending the police school and was staying there, and Mario had his own apartment in Thessaloniki, where he was studying computing.“So, we had a very interesting biology lesson today.” Annelise chirped.“What was it about?” Mama was always curious to learn about our school life, so she never missed the chance to listen to all the details.“Mendel laws of inheritance. We talked about chromosomes.” Annelise explained.“Oh, that indeed sounds interesting.” Baba acknowledged. “So, what did you learn, princess?”“Hmm, I’ll tell you about the genes that are responsible for our eyes. That was the most fascinating!” She announced and then started explaining.“The eye color is determined by two factors. It’s a pair, and we represent them with letters. RAFAELIf a kid could hate his father more than I did, then I’d pass and forgive my father for everything that he did to me and Gabriella. His torture wasn’t physical. No! He’d never raised a hand against us. He was loving and caring. But he had a very wrong way to love his children. He had a way of overprotecting us and dictating what was good and bad for us. What was best. What was a yes, and what was a no.I couldn’t stand that Gabriella was locked up by him. My little white dove didn’t deserve this behavior.I guess both of us were unlucky to have Augustin as a father. My father was a very conservative man and had weird beliefs. He hated all the other species but werewolves. Humans most of all.I’ve heard him accuse Luna Ariadne and her system thousands of times. My mother, on the other hand, was always silent and meek. She was telling him that he was overacting and to stop slandering a woman who was not even living among us.John’s mother had left years ago and wasn’t living in th

RAFAELToday was John’s Alpha ceremony, and I had promised him that I’d take Gabriella there. He had gathered all the warriors to guard the packhouse and wanted to leave Gabriella locked in the bunker while we would be away.An hour before our departure, rogues attacked our borders. The patrols managed to kill them, but Dad was so afraid to leave Gabriella behind, that he took her with us.It was the first and last time in all those years that Gabriella had gone out of the territory.Poor girl!I remember she had so much fun playing with Vanessa, Beta Richard’s daughter. They were about the same age, and they bonded instantly. My little white dove didn’t have any friends. The only companions she had, were me and Mom.Before I left for my Alpha training, I brought her a smartphone and sneaked it into her room. No one knew our little se

I’ve told you a thousand times.” Tony whines.“Yes, but I don’t believe you,” I utter, and I have solid proofs in my hands.“You should.” He glances once again in his sports bag to see if he has all his gear inside.“I called the police station, you know…” I trail, and his head snaps in my direction, his eyes throwing daggers at me. “Your colleague told me that you left when your shift ended, dressed in plain clothes, not in your uniform.” I quip. Well, to be exact, I asked what he was wearing, pretending we had a date, and I didn’t want to miss our reservation at a restaurant.“How dare you?” He fumes, prowling at me menacingly. He grabs my chin, turning me to look into his eyes. “How dare you, Annelise? Calling at my j

JOHNSIX MONTHS LATERI jump up from bed, super excited. Today is the day! It’s finally her birthday! All the waiting, all these days. Oh God, it’s in the past. I don’t have to wait anymore.I’ll call her. Wish her ‘Happiest Birthday.’ Ask her out. Go pick her up for our date. Smell her. Make sure she is my mate. I hope. Fingers crossed. Bring her back home, and we live happily ever after. That easy! But of course, fate always has different plans and if you want to make God laugh, just tell him your plans. Mama’s wise words.I wish it was that easy.I glance at my phone. Argh, it’s still six o’clock in the morning. Damnit! It’s too early to call her, right? I don’t want to wake her up or freak her out. She’d be like: ‘Ehm, what were you doing? Watching me in your sleep?’Well, head-scratching. Obviously… For every night those past six months. There wasn’t a single night I hadn’t dreamed of her, and I don’t plan to spend another night with my bed empty and her not by my side.I waited.

JOHNI waved off Mama, Annelise, and Ian with a heavy heart. For the freshly mated couple, I was certain that everything would run smoothly and soon my sister would return as the Beta Female of the Pack.Hmmm, maybe I should buy her a saddle for Herc now that I’m thinking about it. Yes, as a welcoming gift. But my Mama? What happened to her? She was crying, and she was upset. And she lied, yeah, like… right on my face. Mama would always evade the truth with diplomacy instead of lying. But now she didn’t even register that she just uttered a lie because the next moment she came up with another. I didn’t pressure her. I didn’t tell her that I knew she was lying. I just let her go. It seemed that things were already awkward; I shouldn’t meddle in and make them worse.I sighed. I knew that soon we would have to see our guests off, but honestly, now this was the last thought that occupied my mind.First and foremost was Gabriella. Always Gabriella. My dreams yesterday were full of her, twir

ARIADNE«Μαμά; Είσαι καλά; » [“Mama? Are you alright?”]“Mama?”“Mama?”Why did he have to do this to me? Why didn’t he let me go without torturing me anymore? Wasn’t it enough that I still loved him despite everything that had happened between us? Do you know how hard it was to love someone you cannot have? And worst of all, for so many years? How hard was I trying to avoid him when I was here? How hard was I trying to keep him out of my mind? Out of sight, out of mind, they say. My ass!All these years of trying in vain. I still loved him. Every particle of my body was reacting to his presence, and even though I could wear the mask of indifference, I could no longer hold it. This song broke all my resolve. Every brick I built, raising walls to keep my love for him out of the picture, it just crumbled them down, and my heart prevailed. But unfortunately, I couldn’t keep him out of my head. No more. No matter how hard I tried. Twenty-two years didn’t help heal my broken heart. It would

DAVIDThe meeting last night went well. I was confident, and I had faith that Ian would make it through it all unharmed. Before eating breakfast, John and I went to the warrior’s dining room in the packhouse. Because a few guests had already begun their breakfast, it was essential for us to make our presence felt like hospitable hosts. When all the pleasantries ended, we went to the other dining room where we used to eat.I sat in my seat, glancing at Ariadne, who was sitting silently, picking her food. John and Annelise were bantering, and Ian was drooling over her.I didn’t want to speak in case I told something and provoked or annoyed Annelise, so I kept silent. I should think of a way to approach her when she finally comes and claims her post as a Beta Female of this pack. Jessica, Ian’s stepmother, never wanted to take on these duties. She was from the Delta ranks as a doctor, and her career always came before the pack. When my Beta Richard found her, he was ecstatic. He was thril

ALPHA AUGUSTINFinally, we were out of The Golden Moon territory and away from the fiasco they all called Alpha Ceremony.Honestly now?My mind couldn’t conjure how my best friend, my Alpha-Mate, decided to hand in the pack to an abomination of nature.I hated the fact that he was mated to a human. I tried to speak sense into him a million times and make him understand that he shouldn’t degrade his bloodline by accepting a mere human for a mate. But he never listened. He didn’t even want to hear my arguments from some point on. He always stopped me before I could even start talking.I was so relieved when she dumped him and left him. Hoping for a second chance mate for him. A strong Alpha female. That was what David was worthy of.I was mated to a special Alpha female, and he? He was mated to a Nothing. A mere little human!I hated Ariadne with all my being. I argued so many times with Marion about her. Something that made me loathe her even more. But her leaving back then was the best

JOHNI was less than a minute out of the office when I bumped into Agatha. Ian was already heading out for his run, so I was alone.“Oh, just the person I needed. Alpha John…” She waved at me, approaching. Alpha Cornelious was standing by the door just outside Dad’s office.“Mrs. Agatha.” I started and was interrupted by a loud cackle. I swear her laughter was aimed to awaken all our guests! My intention was solely to be polite at that moment.“It’s Agatha.” She instructed when she finally managed to compose herself. “So, I needed your help, because I don’t want to freak out the poor people…”“Just tell me why Annelise isn’t coming to her senses?” Ian snapped, interrupting her, walking toward us in long strides. He might have heard her and returned.“Oh! Just kiss her good morning, Beta Ian. Easy peasy! A true love’s kiss has the power to solve almost anything. A mate’s kiss is even better!” She marveled.Ok! She was a witch. Witches and fairytales go hand in hand, no?“Are you sure? I
