“I’m sorry, sir –“ the boy gasps, shrinking away. “We’re told to obey Celestial orders without question –“ his lip starts to tremble in fear and guilt.
Auden just growls and drops the boy’s arm, reaching into his pocket to grab some coins, which he slips into the boy’s hand. “Tell no one that we’ve been here and no one that she left. Share those coins with the boys inside, pass the instructions on to them. If you all stay silent, there will be more.”
“Yes sir!” the boy quips, his face bright now.
“I’m serious, boy,” Auden continues, snapping his fingers in the boy’s face to make him focus. “There will be consequences for all of you if you disobey. As far as anyone knows, you all fell asleep. You know nothing of anyone leaving the stables tonight. Even if they flog you for it. Yes?”
The boy hesitates and then nods.
Auden nods back to the boy, dismissing him as his Betas come forward leading their mounts. When they’ve led the horses outside and climbed into their saddles, Auden signals for both of his men to come close.
“My father’s bride has made a run for it,” Auden informs them, rueful. The men say nothing, but their faces pale. They know precisely what this will mean if she’s not recovered before the King finds out.
“Joshua,” Auden continues, fixing his eyes on his dark-haired Beta. “Of the three of us, you’re most adept at tracking, so you take the lead tonight.” Joshua nods, accepting the duty.
“Any idea where she’s headed, sir?” Richard asks, leaning forward in the saddle, his face serious.
Auden clenches his jaw, thinking. “She’s a de Silva, so it makes sense that she’s going east, towards the sea. My best guess is that she’s running scared and seeking familiar ground. We’ll try that first, look for tracks.”
The Betas nod, agreeing to the plan, and Auden turns his horse, kicking him into a canter. The Betas follow at a swift pace, the pack headed east.
Joshua leads the group down the road, his eyes keen on the dust for any sign of Everleigh. Luckily, the horse she stole wears shoes made by the palace blacksmith, which have a distinctive pattern if you know to look for it, and not many other royal horses left the stables tonight.
The group follows the tracks, Joshua’s eyes close on the dust as he tries to make sense of a path through the well-trafficked roads outside the palace gates. But Auden chose Joshua because he’s the best – and each time Joshua looks back at the others, he simply nods. And so they keep going.
East, ever east. Towards the de Silva pack lands. Towards Everleigh’s home.
As they travel through the dark countryside towards the sea, the track that they’re following becomes clearer and Auden hopes to hell that it’s hers. God – if this turns out to be a mistake and she gets away…
But Auden dismisses the thought. He’ll face that if he has to, not before.
The rural roads by the ocean are less traveled, and when they are, it’s largely by farmers who are now in their beds. It is a fairly simple task, this late, to follow the single horse’s tracks through the dirt.
Auden blinks in surprise, though, when Joshua indicates a southern road instead of the one heading dead east, towards the de Silva pack lands.
“The tracks lead this way, sir,” Joshua says, his voice firm.
“But,” Auden replies, frowning down the eastern road. “Her family estate –“
Joshua just shrugs, his face expressionless. “I don’t know why she did it, sir,” he says, “but whatever the reason, she took this road, not that one.”
Sighing, frustrated that it’s not as simple as he’d like it to be, Auden nods, and the three continue their hard ride along the southern road.
The path soon opens out onto the coast and the team moves along lofty cliffs that dip into sandy beaches. Auden glances at the coastline in the moonlight, passively appreciating its beauty before he notices that Joshua is flashing them a hand signal ahead.
“She slowed down here,” Joshua says as the group comes together at a crossroads, one path leading into a tiny coastal town, the other merely a footpath towards some cottages settled below on the beach. “And I think…”
“She went this way,” Auden says, looking down the little footpath. Joshua looks up at Auden, surprised that he intuited it first, and then nods.
Auden nods to his Betas and, single file, they start to head down the path, Auden in the lead.
It’s not hard to see where they’re going. Only one of the houses ahead has windows lit by candlelight. Inside the house they can see the hurried shadows of figures flitting back and forth.
As they come close to the cottage, Auden signals his men to fall back out of sight. He dismounts and moves forward alone, listening closely for any voices, but the only sounds are the waves crashing close beyond the house’s simple fence. As he approaches, Auden notes that the cottage is a cheerful place. The door is painted a bright blue and a collection of shells neatly decorates the lintel above it.
Close enough to hear voices inside, Auden slips the reins over his horse’s head and ties them neatly to a post near the entrance. Then he flips the latch to the little white gate, pushing it open.
As he does, the door to the house opens as well, as if fate deemed his entry to coincide neatly with her exit.
Because he knows instantly that it is Everleigh wrapped in a traveling cloak, pushing the door open with her shoulder, a pack slung over her arm. Her face is still turned towards the house as she steps one foot out, pulling something along after her.
She turns, speaking softly -
And then she sees him.
Everleigh’s face goes pale. Her mouth drops open as her body locks in shock.
Auden feels the same shock pulse through him as his eyes travel downward, taking in the two children – a boy and a girl, obviously twins - standing next to Everleigh, one of each of their hands clasped in her own.
And Auden’s eyes go wide as he realizes that held close to the chest of the little girl is a very tiny, very sleepy blue dragon.
Shit. It’s the only word I can think as I see him standing there, his eyes taking in the picture we make: me, my children, our ridiculous pet dragon, clearly ready to run. And I watch as he focuses solely on them, shock the only thing on his face as he puts together my story, the reason I ran.I’m completely frozen as I watch the man I never, ever intended for my children to meet looking right at them.I gasp, suddenly, my body forcing me to draw breath as I realize that in my panic I’ve completely stopped breathing. My mind begins to whir then, coming up with any excuse, any viable solution –The only thing I can think of is to scream at my children to run – or at least to lie -Unfortunately for me, Vivi acts first.“You stay away!” she yells, dropping Coco on the wooden floor of our porch with a thump as she points a small, angry finger at the Prince. “You get away from our house, stranger!” she shouts. Coco gives an indignant little cry but then he shakes himself and, predictably,
**Midwinter, Five and a Half Years Ago**“Wait wait wait,” Angeline bursts out, laughing so hard she can hardly say the words. “Wait! Evie!” She puts her hands out to grab my wrists, stopping me from again sweeping my hands over my hair, which is currently a bright purple.I’m also laughing so hard that my stomach hurts as I stare at our reflections, baffled and thrilled at how well the little illusion spell is working on us.“No!” I shout, trying to raise my hands again, “I want to turn it green!”“No, the purple is amazing!” Angeline protests, grinning at me in the wide mirror in her bathing chamber. “It goes with your dress! And you have to fix mine – seriously, you have to fix mine!”And then we’re both laughing hysterically again because I really do have to do something about her hair – the last time I touched it and muttered the words to the incantation, I made it look like the ends of her hair had caught on fire and shriveled up into sad, crispy little curls. It’s amazing, real
**Midwinter, Five and a Half Years Ago**“My queen,” Auden says, bowing low to the girl he barely knows standing before him on the dais. He lets out a long breath as he holds the bow, staring at the floor, willing himself to hold himself together and be civil to this woman who took his mother’s place. It wasn’t her fault, after all. When Auden straightens, he sees a warm smile on Angeline’s face, her hands outstretched towards him.“Hey, Auden,” she says, her voice soft. “Welcome home.”And something shifts in the prince as he looks at the girl standing before him, her face open to him and full of empathy. He had thought that he’d have nothing but bitter resentment for Angeline for the rest of his life - had been fully prepared for that, even. But as she stands there in front of him, her arms outstretched, a hesitant smile starting on her face, Auden’s mouth curls upwards at one corner. Damn it, but he can’t help but like her. Just a little bit.Auden takes a few steps forward, raisin
I lean against the threshold of my front door as I watch Auden kneel in front of Vivi, who glares at him, and Niall, who looks at this gigantic Alpha with wide and worried eyes. Niall tucks himself behind Vivi a little, hiding behind her courage. “Are you really a prince,” Vivi asks, narrowing her eyes at Auden and looking him up and down, her little blue dragon sleeping across her shoulder. “Don’t I look like a prince?” Auden asks, cocking his head to look at his daughter curiously. “No,” she replies instantly, making him laugh. “What about me doesn’t seem prince-like?” he asks, and I come into the room, shutting the door behind me. My gaze flashes to Anna in the kitchen while Vivi considers Auden for a moment longer, and I quickly shake my head at Anna, asking her not to say a word. Anna nods a quick assent. “You are too tall,” Vivi decides. “And dirty. And you have no crown.” Auden laughs again, a warm sound that surprises me
My stomach twists with anxiety as our three horses approach the palace. The sun is almost fully risen, which means that soon the palace will wake up - that Mahl will wake up and have the chance to notice that I’m gone. “Can we go any faster?” I murmur, glancing over my shoulder for probably the hundredth time even though I’m fully aware that there’s no one behind me except Auden’s guard, Richard. Richard doesn’t take his eyes off the road ahead of us, but I know he’s watching my every move – that he’s been ordered to, just in case I’m stupid enough to try and run again. “If we go any faster,” Auden replies tightly under his breath, “we’ll draw attention to ourselves.” I know he’s right – and I know he’s frustrated because he’s already explained that to me twice before. Our goal right now is to look like an everyday Alpha and Luna heading to the palace with their guard for the continued festivities. They’ve dressed me for the part, too, in an elegant
King Mahl stands glaring at us, his whole body tensed with the effort of not transforming into his wolf and leaping at us. I feel my breath come short in my chest, terrified despite Auden’s assurance that he will quickly get this under control.Mahl’s eyes are fixed on me and I can see the threat in the steady flame burning there, the tension in each of his muscles. He immediately suspects betrayal and he’s ready to make me pay for it, no questions asked. That’s how Mahl rules, after all: by making sure that everyone knows that he can rip those who betray him to shreds and that he’s ready to do it at the barest whiff of disloyalty. The threat feels very real to me as we stop our horses a few feet from the King and Auden swings his leg over his horse’s saddle, dropping easily to the ground. Auden turns to Mahl, taking his horse’s bridle in his hand and giving the King a short bow. “Father,”
Mahl walks me steadily to the door of the Queen’s apartments in silence.“I’m afraid I gave your sister a bit of a scare this morning,” he informs me, making me jump even though he keeps his voice low. But then, realizing what he said, I snap my face up to his, surprised. Honestly, I’d forgotten all about poor Calli – my mind was on other problems.“Is – is she all right?” I ask, hesitant.“She is fine,” Mahl replies, nodding and coming to a stop outside the door. “I do not appreciate being lied to though, wife. Or you asking your family members to lie in your stead.”“It was Auden’s idea,” I say quickly, throwing him under the horse’s cart a bit but willing to let him take the blame. “He didn’t want to worry you in the night – if you…if you came to visit me. She was to tell you I was ill.”Auden told me, of
The peaceful silence of the King’s chamber grates on Auden’s nerves as he leans against the windowsill, staring at the door. He knows it’s going to burst open at any moment and he’s not looking forward to it.Still. He wants to get this done so he can move on with his day. Auden clenches his jaw as he lets his mind wander, just a little, to the thousand things he has left to do. There’s so much to organize before this evening’s ridiculous garden party - so much he has to get exactly, precisely right -God, Auden thinks, shaking his head and not taking his eyes off the door in front of him. What the hell was I thinking, getting myself wrapped up in this? Auden scowls, because of course he knows the answer. A woman doesn’t deserve to die, orphaning her children and sparking a feud with her family, just because she had very temporary (and very valid) hesitation about the King’s choice to claim her as his next bride. After all, Auden considers, it’s not like Mahl asked Everleigh what
To my surprise, no summons to dinner and festivities comes from Mahl that evening. Instead, I’m brought a sensible little supper in my rooms alongside a note from the King saying that his war council is running late. I gleefully pack up the little dinner, taking it with me across the rooftop to the children’s suite where I cuddle Niall and Vivi in my lap and hear all about their trials and victories on their first day at school. The same happens the next night, and the night after – to the point where I’m starting to wonder if Mahl has gotten sick of me. I mean, a pleasant turn but…One which I’m not sure I fully believe. Margot has been coming to breakfast, after all, filling me in on her activities. Apparently, Mahl has been calling for her at midnight and beyond after long days in meetings – wanting someone willing in his bed, I suppose, instead of a reluctant bride whom he has to coax and seduce. She told me that their meetings have been consis
I stare up at Auden, because he can’t possibly mean that he wants me to come to him tonight -But he frowns a me, confused, and my wolf slumps to the ground of my soul with a wolfish little moan of mortification. Because yeah! He can’t possibly mean that! It’s just me, with my filthy dream-addled little mind that was thinking that he could have wanted that.I clench my teeth against a groan.“Are you all right?” Auden asks, stepping forward, reaching out a hand to support me.“I’m fine,” I sigh, stepping away and turning towards the center of the children’s room, walking unsteadily over to Vivianna’s little bookshelf and placing the tiara on top. I take the opportunity of my turned back to pull myself together, my wolf regaining her feet and shaking out her fur, newly determined not to be such a mess.“So…” Auden says. I turn to see him watching me, still leaning against the wall, expression bemused. “Are you com
“Mom won’t let me wear my tiara!” Viv shouts, stepping towards her papa, knowing he’s the easier mark. She lifts a hand to her head as she goes, holding the too-large diamond-encrusted headpiece on her blonde hair. I sigh as I watch, thinking that such an incredible piece of jewelry is far too fine for a little girl who is definitely going to drop it on the floor at any moment.Honestly, she should just give it to me. You know. For safekeeping.“Why on earth do you want to wear a tiara, Viv,” Auden murmurs, looking behind him and tossing the hand towel onto the table by his own room. “You’ll be playing and learning –““Because it is pretty!” she snaps. “And mine!”Auden grimaces, looking first at the clock and then at me, opening his mouth. I step forward, my jaw dropping, because I can see the concession on his lips.“Don’t you dare, Auden!” I snap, pointing a finger at him and glaring hard. “She ca
I blink awake, staring at the ceiling of my castle room in the dark, grief rushing through me alongside awe.Because that dream…it was so vivid. Like I was…there, feeling everything in the moment like it had been real. The feel of his skin against mine, god damn it, I felt it. It was like…a memory relived, more than a dream.I sigh, turning my face to the side, looking over at Margot’s good-dream cakes, wondering if the name is a lie. Because while the events of that dream were fairly fantastic and I have woken all limp and languid as if I really did just have the best sex of my life…God, but that’s cruel. To give me an experience that was so real, to which my actual life will never, ever live up. My wolf howls, wanting me to close my eyes so I can go back to that dream – but I shake my head, knowing that I can’t.How had the little cake
He snarls, pleased, a predator now as he thrusts himself hard into me, claiming me with every stroke. My entire body shakes as I gasp again and again, what’s left of my mind ringing with the truth of it – with how fucking good and right it feels to make myself his, to give myself completely to him, to his pleasure –I feel it, somehow, building in him as it builds in me. My breath is nothing but fervid little gasps as he pounds me harder, his hand wrapped in my hair, pain mingling with pleasure as I dig my nails into the flesh of his back, begging him for more. I curl against him, my entire body tensing with every stroke, and I feel him watching me – taking pleasure in my helpless gasps as he strokes again and again –He growls, a command as I come to the end of it and I moan – heavy and true, my eyes pressed shut, my teeth finding his shoulder as that tension winds so tight –His fingers press
**Midwinter, Five and a Half Years Ago**I move my hand slowly up and down Auden’s cock, reveling a little at the feel of it thick and heavy against my palm even has half of my attention is on his mouth, moving fervidly over mine. I moan – just a soft, throaty noise - completely overwhelmed by him. The size and sheer power of this Alpha –God damn it but I want him. Heat builds low in my body, a fluttering tension growing in my core.Auden’s hips flex, pressing himself tighter against my palm, stroking the length of that fantastic cock against my hand as he leverages himself above me, his weight held up on his forearms as he finishes kicking his pants off, leaving them in a heap at the other end of the couch. He pulls his mouth away from me for a moment, panting, looking down into my face. And I see him hesitate, even as I continue to stroke him. His eyes flutter shut for a moment as I move
Auden kiss Everleigh fiercely, intent as his hand moves over the bodice of her dress, feeling the shape of her beneath the fabric. His hand slips around to her back, fumbling with the laces there as Evie kisses him back, their tongues pressing against each other in a way that makes him…absolutely insane. All the thoughts slip from Auden mind as Everleigh shifts in his lap, sliding her thigh over his so that she’s again straddling his hips, her face leveled slightly above Auden’s so that his head tilts back just as she kisses him. Somehow his fingers fumble with the strings, pulling at them, feeling them loosen –But he’s not sure how his hands manage that – because all of his thoughts are entirely overwhelmed by the scent of her filling his nostrils, the need he has to touch her skin, to get these stupid clothes off her, to see her – his mate – bare for him –Naked, entire
**Midwinter, Five-and-a-Half Years Ago**Auden just stares at her for a long, long moment. The most beautiful girl he’s ever seen, without a doubt. Here, in his arms, looking up at him with her clear blue eyes. Then, to his shock, her hands keep moving. He looks around for the mask – where did she toss it? But it’s nowhere. He’s distracted by the thought as her hands move over her hair, his eyes going wide as –As the color leeches out of it –Auden’s jaw is hanging open by the time she lowers her hands to her lap, grimacing a little. “Blonde,” she says, glancing upwards like she can see it – all the lovely sunshine hair tumbling from her head, landing halfway down her back.“What…the hell…” Auden whispers, completely rigid with shock. She grimaces. “You don’t like blondes?&
He shakes his head. “I don’t even know Angeline. She seems very nice – and fun. I think I will like her, I just…I can’t believe they’re having a kid.” He exhales, running a hand through his hair, staring off into the distance as he processes it.“Your first sibling,” I murmur, my brows rising as I sip the last of my whiskey and put the cup on the floor. “Do you want a brother or a sister?”He smirks and turns his eyes back to me. “I want you to stop distracting me.”I grin, caught. “But it’s such a fun distraction.”He laughs, leaning towards me and reaching out, wrapping his wide hand around one of my ankles. “Fun for you. I’m still tortured.”“Oh, come on,” I say, shaking my head and letting my red hair fall around my face. “We can discuss baby names. They could name your new sibling after
