“I was at the temple,” Xavier spoke as Mia stepped into the throne room after being summoned.

Being summoned meant getting reprimanded. That didn’t always happen, not yet. She knew her role and played it out well. She stayed polite and graceful every time she stepped out of her room. And despite wanting to choke the air out of her husband, the alpha king, just for breathing around her most times, she didn’t. She had kept her heart in check and remained in control, even though it seemed impossible. Edward would want her to.

These past few days had been peaceful between them, but she didn’t forget what he did to Edward.

She didn’t know why she was summoned, but it wasn’t for what she had done. He had also dismissed his guards, so whatever he wanted to talk about was between the two of them. She debated what it was about.

“The alpha of alphas has awakened for over a week now, but he will return to the state of reasoning later today

Mia is crossing lines and stepping on wires. How long will Xavier hold out on her? What would his reaction be to her rebellion? Mia is furious that Zara gets to do whatever she wants and she couldn't. I might take a break for now, (I will update as fast as I can, but im very low emotionally and sensitive and over thinking.) I will bounce back. I promise. Thank you for the seven votes. You made me cry. Thank you for your loyalty to this book.

The sound of the trumpet informed Xavier of his father’s arrival and he rose from his throne and down the stairs, towards the wide window, which he could see through. Just as expected, Robb got down from his carriage escorted by a few temple guards and priests towards the Palace. He was adorned in a white long robe with golden stripes, a signature of his title as alpha of alphas. Xavier hated the wrecking feeling that always accompanied the thought of Robb being close by. He had had it since he was a child and he thought he’d outgrow it by now. It was the fear that his father could take away from him in a blink everything he had worked so hard to attain. He feared that from childhood and even till now; the fear lingered. It’s been over three years since Robb Ainsworth stepped foot into the Palace. Three years of not being contradicted, and over three years of not having to prove himself worthy to a good-for-nothing father. Time had gone by so fast, maybe even too fast. He turned to

Mia flipped the book in her hand to page seventeen, and she almost started reading when her door flew open and the devil emerged inside, with a face ripped so red Mia almost feared it’ll explode. The ring was still on his finger, but somehow he looked as furious as ever. Perhaps it wasn’t as powerful as everyone thought, or Xavier’s fury was that intense. He stormed towards her, but Mia remained, unmoved. “What in the name of all mystical creations do you think you’re doing?” he growled at her. “Reading,” she simply replied, her insolent boldness stopping him in his tracks, which was still a few feet away from her. He laughed, but not a merry laugh. It was filled with the rage coursing on the inside, coming to play on the outside. “I should have killed you. I should have asked those guards to kill you and throw your sorry body into the ocean.” He ran his furry shaky hand through his hair, tugging hard on it, an at

“Shall we go now?” he asked grumpily, snapping her out of her thought. She grinned and rose to her feet with grace, walking over to him and falling in line with him. “I’m pretty sure Robb would look down on me for taking too long to present my wife to him.” “You could tell him you were helping your wife out, as any caring husband would.” he turned and glared at her, but she ignored him and continued. “Thanks for the hair. I didn’t think you could handle it.” She admitted. She expected his response to be a silly excuse to brush up his tortured ego, but it was nothing of that sort. “Me too. My mother’s hair was slicker and straight, hence easy to control. Yours was a little different.” Hearing him talk about his mother, the former queen told her he had a healthy relationship with her, unlike his father. “You did it though, better than I would have.” His hand dropped to wrap around her waist, pulling her against his firm body. “Well, good thing you married me.” he joked in a co

  • The Alpha King's Ugly Bride   31: Two opposite sides

Mia and Xavier stepped out together as king and queen today. This wasn’t their first official outing as couples. They have done a few in the past. This, however, was their attempt to present themselves as a happy couple to the rest of the kingdom. They were currently at the sporting arena where over a hundred people sat watching the two men wrestle with each other in the ring. Two men beating the shit out of each other was part of entertainment for the cheering crowd. Entertainment in Wahala could come as art, music, drama and sometimes sweaty wrestling. Mia didn’t really like the gruesome fight just to show off strength. Growing up, her mistress taught her that violence was an inescapable trait of every werewolf. Her father, however, disagreed with it. He was the most peaceful and peace-seeking man Mia ever knew, and it was easy to believe him. “We choose our own fate. We decide who we want to be.” he would always say. People called him weak, but he never paid mind to that. He

She finished reading and glanced up at Xavier who had done little to get out of his pissed off state. “Your father wants to visit the Capital 3, and he wants me to come along with him.” She rolled the letter in her hand and it returned to the way it first was, but for the broken seal. “Yes, I read that.” he told her, his voice still upset. He took her hand, and they silently got into the carriage, which drove them home. Once at the Palace, Xavier offered Mia his hand, and she took it. He helped her out and together they made their way out of the carriage. They were at the last step to the entrance when Mia broke the silence that had dominated for over an hour. She slowly withdrew her hand from his protective hold. “I would like to accept the invitation and go with your father to see the sites of the Capital 3.” she informed him of her decision. His head snaps to her, her answer was the last thing he wanted to hear. It, howe

  • The Alpha King's Ugly Bride   33: Whatever it takes

Mia had woken up early this morning and readied herself for the day ahead. She would have to meet Robb Ainsworth at the tenth hour at the site and didn’t want to go later than the time given. When Toni came into her room, it was to ready her bath and after that; she helped make her up. She didn’t want to put too much into her looks. There was nothing to put anything to, but she wanted to look presentable. She had stepped out from behind Xavier’s shadow a few times, especially with her duties at the maidens’ court, but this was different. She would stand before the alpha and alphas alone, and sell him a lie. Xavier had his doubts and fears, as he should. She didn’t expect him to trust her; she didn’t trust herself. The face that stared back at her in the mirror looked bold. It almost looked in control and capable of doing anything. It was the ninth hour, and she was already dressed and ready. She received information about the arrival of the carriage and she arose and made her

Mia took a walk in the Palace garden and a guard stayed by her side because the alpha king was being extra careful. She had gotten closer to Robb in the past couple or weeks and Xavier didn’t like that. This was his way of playing the part of a good husband and keeping an eye on her. She made a promise to stick with their agreement until the end and she hoped to keep it. She wasn’t leaving, but the king didn’t know that and if he did; he didn’t believe it. Xavier’s anxiety didn’t go away, particularly the one towards his father. Mia saw how much it affected him when everyone was away and the charade ended. He had happy days, but those days didn't last long. She didn’t want to pity him, but watching him put so much effort into pleasing his father just to get his approval felt horrible. He didn’t trust her either. He had a hard time trusting anyone because he expected the worse from everybody and believed they were all out against him. Not everyone was his father and c

The event of the night was grand, and king Xavier wanted her to look her best since her natural face wasn’t the best. The king had hired Juliet D’Souza, the kingdom’s greatest make-up artist, for her. Juliet came to do her magic. “What do you think?” the old woman asks, turning to her. She had so many layers of powder touch on her face that made her look strange in Mia’s eyes. “I look okay,” Mia tried her hand at being polite. The wind blew over Mia’s face as she walked through the garden to where she was informed Xavier was waiting for her. She had paid a visit to the temple to offer prayers after Xavier stubbornly refused to come with her. In his defence, he had never been a fan of temple visits, not since he attacked the priests during his first shift. She didn’t push further. She understood him and so she went alone. She was about to leave when Valok, a seer at the temple, took hold of her hand while trapped in a trance. Her heart skipped a little, but she remained in control and watched what he wanted to do or say. After what felt like ages, he opened his eyes and his orbs shone white as crystal. “Hail, queen Mia, mother of Wahala’s greatest ruler. It is an honour to stand in your presence and foretell the little I’ve seen.” He bowed his head. “The moon goddess knows what she did when she made you blue and also queen.” Mia instantly knew he spoke about her fur and she wonders if he had any kno

  • The Alpha King's Ugly Bride   94: Her decision to live

Xavier sat in the courtroom, listening to the report of the supervisors of the Capital 3 in the last few months. According to their report, the project should reach its completion in another four months and in a year’s time, these institutions would become fully functioning. Xavier, however, didn’t listen to their case or take anything they say into consideration. His mind was far away on the ship leaving for the kingdom of Reading, the ship which had the love of his life and mate. It left shores three days ago according to the reports he received and his heart had been bleeding ever since. He made a promise to Mia to carry on in her absence, and that was what he had done so far. Still, it hurt, waking up every day without her beside him. Going about his duties as king without having her laugh and tease him didn’t sit well. He missed her; he missed her laughter, her grace, her rebellion and everything that made her who she was. He couldn’t accept the fact that she had gone, accepting

Weeks later. Xavier’s lashes pulled apart as his consciousness returned. He saw Mia already up and seated on the bed, staring up at the ceiling. He barely saw her like this. Everything was now good. The kingdom was safer than ever, and progress was now a sure thing. After the trial ended, Xavier dismissed Elliott from the capital, because he believed he had a hand in the attack on the queen, even though there was no proof of it. Robb implored him to reconsider his decision, but his queen was okay with the sentence and so was he. All has gone well ever since, and Xavier only hopes it’ll get better. He pulled himself up and drew closer. He placed his lips on her soft, bare back, lathering kisses thereon and feeling her tingle to his touch. She moaned and turned to him. “Good morning.” “Good morning, my love. Why are you up?” “Thinking.” she sighed. She looked to be in a dilemma and that had cast a dark fog over her mi

  • The Alpha King's Ugly Bride   92: When it all falls into place

Xavier stepped into the inner courts where the now seven elders, Elliott and Robb, sat waiting for him. Behind him were Mia and Edward, and together they made their way up. While Edward and Mia stayed back, Xavier continued towards the stand to face the alpha of alphas. Unlike the last time they were here, they had one less person in the courtroom, Chike. The council of alphas in unison placed a curse on Alpha Chike as punishment for the betrayal of his duties to the throne a few days ago. The curse left the mark of betrayal, an engraved red scar on his forehead, which would tell everyone who he was and what he had done. And after that, they banished him from the kingdom of Wahala. He was told never to return or will die at the hands of the elders and his soul would end up in Inferno, every living being’s nightmare. Heeding Mia’s advice, the king spared Chike’s family from his fate after discovering that they had no hand in it. Alpha Chike’s act of betrayal a

“Queen Mia, your presence is needed in the throne room. The elders are assembled and waiting for you.” Mia slammed shut the book in her hand abruptly and rose to her feet, following the guard out of her study. She walked as fast as her legs could take her to stay on track with Sir Valerio. Summoning the eight elders together usually took three to five days, because they weren’t always in the capital. But since they’ve all stayed at the capital in the last three weeks of the king’s trial, their arrival at the palace took a few hours after the message went out to them. She arrived at the throne room and the eight elders stood before the king, all adorned with white robes having golden stripes. Over a dozen guards stood behind them and Edward stood on the first stair that led up the throne seat where Xavier sat. All eyes travelled to her at her arrival and she immediately shivered in response, knowing her attacker was also here, staring at her. Xav

  • The Alpha King's Ugly Bride   90: Consequences

When Mia woke up the next day, she didn’t find Xavier in bed. He had left, and her eyes strained. She wondered how long she had been asleep while she turned around in his bed. The smell of Xavier lingered on the sheets and in the room and last night her senses were foggy, but now she could take in his manly smell along with his scent. She missed this, and it was just two days of being apart. She wanted to stay all day here, but she knew reality wouldn’t let her have that. She sighed and pulled herself up to sit down, the memories of the night before slipping into her head and she remembered why she came back to Xavier’s room. There was an intruder last night, an alpha, who tried to kill her. The images flashed back into her head and fear gripped her heart. She wrapped her arms around her body. She had held her own, yet she was scared. Xavier asked her into his room so he could keep her safe and she was grateful he did because she felt safe wrapped in his bed and arms

Xavier couldn’t stand the thought of any harm coming to Mia. He had made provision for more security since his trial began, so no harm came to her when she stepped out of the Palace but failed to consider the harm that could happen within the palace. He failed to protect her tonight. He didn’t see the attack coming, but he should have. He would have lost her tonight, and it would have been his fault. The thought of losing her haunted him and shrunk his heart terribly. He needed to keep her safe at all times. “You can’t stay here. Come stay with me tonight,” he suggested. She hesitated because she felt unsure about his suggestion. “I haven’t slept in your bed in the last two days.” He nodded. “And I’m sorry about that. You were right, I was selfish, but it was because I didn’t want you going down with me. I love you too much to want that.” She nodded, no longer wanting to fight after everything. “I understand.” He exhaled in relief. “Good, then come with me to my room and stay ther

Mia had returned to her room after the incident with her husband two days ago and hadn’t gone back since. This morning, unlike yesterday, when she went for breakfast, she didn’t see him at the table. She didn’t ask Edward, who sat at the table with her where he was. She was still mad at Xavier as she should be. But she didn’t hate him. She couldn’t hate him because she loved him. He only did what he thought was best, what he thought she wanted. Yet, it hurt her. He was ready to give up on everything. On the kingdom, his throne, and on her. That made her mad. She stripped out of her clothes, picked up the towel and wrapped it around herself. Then she made her way to the bathroom to get a hot bath. Toni already set her white nightgown on a hanger close to the door, so she could change before leaving the bathroom. She stayed in the tub, easing her body and mind of the events of the day. She missed Xavier’s hands on her. They were good at washing and making her feel relaxed. She no lo

Xavier stood beside the door of the court, holding a smile on his face as he watch her speak with the maidens. Not for once did he take his eyes off her majesty. She was the walking, breathing definition of perfection. He didn’t care how the trial would end; he didn’t put his mind to it. He was only interested in cherishing his queen for the rest of the time he had. As the maidens took their leave, Mia’s gaze finally turned to him, and his heart skipped a beat. She smiled and made her way over to him. Every step made his heart beat faster. The smile didn’t leave her face as she approached, and he took a few steps forward to meet up with her. “My king.” “My queen.” “We will win this.” Yes, that was very important, but somehow, having her with him for the rest of time felt even much more important. Staying with him, however, might not make her as happy as it would make him, and if he truly love
