AXEL

That girl—there was something strange about her. In all my eighteen years, I had never seen anything like it. I was born with special gifts; the ability to read and control minds. But those gifts were as much a curse as they were a blessing because sometimes, I knew things I’d rather not. Yet no matter how much I tried, I couldn’t read her mind. She was a mystery, and I hated mysteries.

She intrigued me, made me curious, made me want to get close to her. No girl had ever rejected me the way she did, and that bruised my ego. Brutally. Every girl wanted me; they all wanted to be in my bed—except her. And that, I decided, would change. I was going to make her want me, even if it meant dumping her afterward.

Standing in front of the mirror in my dorm room, I checked my reflection one last time. My eighteenth birthday party was tonight, and everything needed to be perfect. Tonight, I’d meet my wolf for the first time, and the thought of that made me a little nervous, different scenarios playing in my head. What if I didn’t see my wolf? Just like my uncle, Lucius, who didn’t see his wolf until much later, when he was twenty-nine. The possibility of that happening to me made my stomach churn.

The door suddenly creaked open, shaking me out of my thoughts. My parents appeared before the door, wide smiles spreading on their faces as they cheerfully ventured inside and sandwiched me in a tight hug.

“My boy is a man now!” My mother, the ever-beautiful northern Luna queen, beamed as she pulled away from the hug, stepping back just enough to see my face. “You look as handsome as ever.”

“I am proud of you!” My father, the northern Alpha king, chuckled, patting my back. He raised his brow, his gaze turning serious. “Are you ready for tonight?”

“What?” My brows creased in confusion.

“Your first shift,” he clarified.

I shook my head. “No. I am not ready for that.”

My mother frowned. “Why? We want to be here with you to help you through your first shift.”

“I am not ready,” I said in a dismissive tone as I turned around to grab my phone from the bed. Looking back at them, I muttered, “Shall we?”

They stood there, gazing at me, debating whether to press me further and coerce me into shifting tonight. I knew that because I could read their minds.

“Mom, Dad. Shall we?” I repeated, darting my gaze between them.

“Okay,” my mom breathed, finally deciding against it. “Take your time. Do it whenever you are ready. But be sure to call us, okay?”

“Okay.” I nodded, knowing full well that I wouldn’t. I could handle my first shift on my own.

One of my father’s men entered the room, his arms piled high with neatly wrapped gift boxes. He set them down on my bed and left without a word.

“With love from me and your beautiful mother,” my father said, pressing a soft kiss to my mom’s cheek before gesturing towards the pile of gifts on the bed.

“You can open them after the party,” Mom added, giggling like a school girl.

I nodded with a smile. “Thank you.”

I loved my parents. I loved how deeply in love they were with each other. And when I finally found my mate, I wished for a bond like theirs.

“And, Mom, Dad…” I reached for the bouquet of flowers on the nightstand and handed it to them. “Happy anniversary.”

Mom’s cheeks turned rosy, and Dad’s grin split his face as they collected it and inhaled the scent of the white lilies. “Thank you so much,” they beamed in unison, pulling me in for another hug.

Afterwards, we made our way to the grand hall that had already been decorated beautifully for the birthday. The hall was crowded with students, school staff, and parents, all dressed in their best outfits.

Despite my parents standing beside me, several girls rushed towards me, their movements flirtatious as they handed me gifts. After politely thanking them for the presents, I instructed them to drop the gifts on a table near me before ignoring them afterward. I hated it when girls threw themselves at me. It was pathetic, really. That was one of the reasons the mysterious new girl intrigued me so much. She was just... different.

I glanced around the room, but she was nowhere to be found. Of course, she wouldn’t attend the party, I thought. Unlike other girls, she wasn’t desperate to be mated to me.

“Where are Uncle Lucius and Aunt Amelia?” I asked my parents when I realized they weren’t present.

Uncle Lucius was my father’s older brother, while Aunt Amelia was his wife.

“They had some emergency to take care of,” Mom told me, holding my hand and squeezing gently. “But they send their sincerest apology and promise to make it up to you.”

Before I could respond, a pair of hands covered my eyes from behind. I immediately recognized who it was.

“Daisy,” I said, grabbing her hands and turning to face her with a chuckle.

“I know I told you over the phone already, but happy birthday, favorite cousin!” she beamed, wrapping her arms around me.

“I am your only cousin,” I laughed as she pulled away from me. She was adorable and indeed my favorite.

She giggled as she handed me a small gift box.

“What’s inside?” I asked as I took it, staring at it.

She rolled her eyes. “When you open it, you’ll see it, duh.”

She turned her attention to my parents, bowing curtly. “Alpha King, Luna Queen.”

“Birthday boy,” a familiar voice chimed. I looked up to see Indie approaching. Indie was like a sister to me. My parents had raised her after her mother, Lauren, died after giving birth to her.

“What do you have for me?” I asked with a grin.

She handed me a gift box before turning to hug my parents.

“Daisy,” I called, mind-linking her. “Where’s your new friend? Who is she, by the way?”

“You should have asked her when you made me leave the other time just so you could talk to her. And you annoyed her! What did you tell her? She was so annoyed that I was ashamed to claim you as my cousin.”

“What did—” I started, but was interrupted by Indie nudging me.

“Who do you think your mate would be?” she asked, wiggling her brows.

“I don’t know. Maybe you?” I joked.

She burst into laughter. “I’d torment you for the rest of your life if that happened.”

I wrapped my arm around her shoulder, pulling her in tightly. “No, it’d be the other way around.”

She groaned loudly, struggling to free herself but was met with resistance. “You bully!” she yelled.

“Behave,” my father cautioned, chuckling. “It’s your birthday. What if your mate sees this and rejects you?”

“No one can reject me. She—” I trailed off, my jaw dropping when I caught sight of the person entering the hall, standing between a man I recognized as the southern Alpha King and his Luna—my father’s sworn enemy. Was she their daughter? Was the strange girl that sparked my curiosity the southern princess?

“Mate!” a strange voice suddenly roared in my head, startling me.

VIOLET My parents picked me up from my dorm room and drove me to the hall where the birthday party was being held—the very last place I wanted to be. “Violet, darling. How is your first day at school so far?” my mother asked on our way, looking at me expectantly. “Good,” I simply replied. She raised her brow. “And your roommate?” “She’s perfect,” I told her, looking away and peering through the window, hoping she’d drop the conversation. I wasn’t interested in small talk at the moment. I still hated that I had to come to this school and was being forced to attend the birthday party of that boy! “I trust you’ll blend in perfectly,” Father added. “Sure.” We arrived at the venue, and they positioned me between them as we entered. The hall was so huge, filled with overdressed students and their equally overdressed parents, all wearing the same plastic smiles as they mingled. I hated going to functions like this, and I specifically hated being at this particular one. As we ventured

But it kept buzzing, frustrating the living hell out of me. I groaned, squirming on the bed in frustration. “Wakie wakie!” Daisy’s voice suddenly screeched in my ears, and the next thing I knew, she yanked the duvet off me, exposing me to the chilly morning air and forcing me to open my eyes. I glared at her, though she seemed entirely unfazed. “It’s time to get ready for your first day in school,” she said with a giggle as she sauntered to the window. She threw open the blinds, allowing the bright morning sunlight to stream in. I winced, quickly averting my gaze from the harsh light. I groaned loudly, stretching lazily. “Do we really have to do this? Classes?” “Hmm-hmm!” she replied with a nod. “We have to. I’m heading out now. There’s something I need to check at the library before class starts. Make sure you ge

VIOLETWhat was I thinking when I agreed to manage the lacrosse team? I shook my head, disappointed in myself. Now I’d have to deal with him for as long as I managed them. Thankfully, he was on suspension and wouldn’t be around until next week. Small mercies.By 4:30 PM, I was already at the stadium, navigating its maze-like halls in search of the team’s locker room. Once I found it, I cautiously stepped inside, announcing my entrance loud enough to avoid any unwanted surprises. The last thing I wanted was to stumble upon a half-naked player on this sweltering afternoon.“You made it!” Ms. Zara greeted me with a wide smile, pulling me into a warm hug. “Welcome to the team. Fair warning, these boys can be a handful.”Shrugging, I said. “I’ll figure out how to manage them.”She burst out laughing. “That’s what the last manager said. She didn’t even last a day.”Before I could respond, one of the players suddenly appeared in front of us, wearing only briefs.“Who’s the new girl?” he aske

I couldn’t possibly tell her that Axel had cornered me in the locker room to announce, once again, that he was my mate.“I had to take a pee,” I decided to lie.She raised a skeptical brow and stared at me for a few seconds before nodding. “Okay.”It was clear she didn’t believe me, but I was glad she respected boundaries and didn’t push further.Together, we continued observing the players, and when they were done warming up, Zara clapped her hands to

VIOLETMy whole being was consumed by fear. Fear of losing my father to that battle, fear of losing my wolf, fear of being trapped in here forever with no way of getting out. I had long since stopped trying to find an exit since it seemed like I was running through the same path over and over again. “Onyx,” I called my wolf again, hoping that miraculously, she would respond this time. But I was met with the same silence. I lay on my back, shutting my eyes as I tried to sleep my devastating reality away. I did sleep, but I didn’t know for how long before I suddenly felt the scorching heat of the sun hitting my face. I snapped my eyes open to see that the white walls surrounding me had been replaced by a garden of beautiful flowers. I quickly sat up, scanning my surroundings. And then I saw a white door at the far end of the garden. Without thinking twice, I picked myself up and ran with everything in me toward the white door and yanked it open. I woke up in a hospital. My eyes fluttered open, and I found myself lying in a narrow passage, surrounded by tall white walls stretching endlessly in both directions. My breath hitched as I took in what I was wearing—a flowing white maxi dress. Where was I? Panic set in as I tried to reach out to my wolf, Onyx, but she wasn’t responding. Not because she didn’t want to, but because she just wasn’t there. My heart began to beat rapidly against my chest as I quickly picked myself up. The last thing I remembered, I was swimming in the lake when I was attacked by a wolf. A sickening thought crossed my mind, and my stomach tightened. Was I dead? Without hesitation, I began to run down the passageway, desperate to find an exit. But as I reached the end, I turned a corner, only to find another identical hallway stretching before me. Staring into her eyes made my body burn with desire, and I wanted nothing more than to kiss her and every part of her body at that moment. Without thinking twice, I caged my arm around her and leaned in for a rough, desperate kiss. She hesitated at first, but she eventually gave in, kissing me in return. “I want to mark you. Do you trust him not to know her whereabouts?” I asked. “Yes. Your aunt Amelia confirmed that. And she also plans to perform a location spell for Lila together with her father, the witches’ clan elder,” he said. “The girls are cloaked, so I’m sure she’s cloaked herself too,” I pointed out. “We know that. Amelia plans to break through that cloak.” “What?!” I exclaimed, shocked. “She could lose control of her magic if she attempts a spell that powerful!” “I am also worried about her, but she insists on doing it before more girls get abducted,” he told me. Orion wouldn’t stop rumbling excitedly after realizing we had completely misunderstood our mate and that she wasn’t with Emmett. Once the students had settled, Alpha Richard stepped behind the podium, his sharp gaze sweeping across the room. “Good evening, everyone,” he began. “I have called you all here to discuss something important. I’m sure you’ve heard about the recent disappearances of several girls. Because of this, we have tightened security within the school to ensure the safety of our students, especially our girls. They attacked in their cloaked forms, making it incredibly difficult to fight back. But despite the challenges, we always triumphed. However, no matter how many of them we killed in each attack, more would appear the next time. Though we managed to fend them off, I was losing my men, and I knew I had to find a way to stop the attacks once and for all. That was when Silas offered to help, claiming he had a powerful witch under his wing, one who could foresee both the past and future of a person simply by touching them. Her name was Lila. At first, I was skeptical, but desperation drove me to agree to have my past and future read. The visions she provided led us to clues that helped us catch the one behind the Invisibles.
