Anna

“Emerson Triggs,” I repeated as I stared down at him. “Why in the hell would he be coming here?”

Jax leaned back in his chair and stared at me. “Indigo Peak’s witch was taken and killed.

Before he died, he told the alpha about the darkness. She wants to call a meeting of the alphas.”

“A meeting of the alphas,” I repeated. I was starting to sound like a broken record. “And that has to happen here?”

“My land is the biggest, and it’s the furthest away from a human settlement. The territory can be rougher when too many alphas are close together.”

“Great. Let me know when he’s coming. I’ll be taking my vacation then.” I wrapped my arms around my body, suddenly aware of how naked I was. I’d been so furious when I made the plan. There’s a certain amount of confidence that can be born from fury.

It’s funny how quickly that confidence can disappear when fear sets in.

“You’re mated to me. No matter what deal your father made, he can’t have you. You’re mine.”

I wasn’t his. Not really. “How

Jax did what, now? I swung my head and stared at him. “I’m sorry?”“Bridget was half asleep when she gave the orders. One wolf snapped back, and now he’s on the northern patrol for a month. Nobody else complained after that. Apparently northern patrol is cold, isolated, and has shit electricity.”“One more wolf who is going to want me dead. Eh, I guess that’s par for the course.” I pulled out my key. “Well, let’s see how it looks.”Unlocking it, I held my breath and walked in. There was a fresh can of paint on the walls, and the windows gleamed. No new furniture, but that would take more time. “I’m going to go upstairs,” I said softly. “Do you need to go clear it or something?”“I’ll go with you, and if it’s clear, I’ll give you whatever time you need.”He led the way, but I could smell it even before we entered the room. Jax had the walls painted so I didn’t have to see the words whore and killer ever again. At least, not on these walls.“You’re good. I’ll be downstairs.” Finn starte

JaxI knew that nothing was happening here, but just like when we were in that cave, the idea of Finn and Anna made sense to me and drove me mad.Unless I fucked Anna good, and soon, I very well could go mad.“You have got to get a grip,” Anna muttered as she stood. Finn just flashed me a smile and stood as well. “Where do you want my bodyguard to be? Miles away?”Yes.My gaze moved down to the hand flexing by her side. There was a crumpled note in. My note.“What are you doing here?” Anna asked as she shoved the note in her pocket. “Besides apparently spying on your spy.”“Oh, he’s not my spy. Yet. But I do need a word with him.” I glanced around the apartment. I’d done all the clean-up work myself. It was only the second time I’d stepped into her apartment. Both times, I’d hated every second of it. This was not where she belonged. She fucking belonged with me.“Thank you,” Anna said softly. “For the new paint job.”I raised an eyebrow. “Does it hurt to thank me?”“Oh, fuck off. I gu

Anna“Can you describe him to someone? Maybe work up a sketch of what he looks like?”I didn’t like to think of the red wolf, but if he was still a threat, then I would do what I could to help. “He was the only one of my father’s friends who never seemed remotely interested in me. He barely looked at me, and it was one thing I could be grateful for.”Jax got up and walked my way. I didn’t move a muscle when he turned my chair around and knelt at my feet. I swallowed hard. “Good thing I’m not in my panties, or I’d think you were about to take advantage of me,” I whispered.“I don’t need to see you half naked to want you, Anna,” Jax said in a low voice. “I want you when you’re miles away. I’m here now to remind you that you’re my mate, and I will protect you. From everything.”All because he was my mate. “Your wolf chose me, but your human half hates to even touch me,” I whispered. “So forgive me if I don’t swoon when you say things like that.”“Oh, Anna. My human half does not hate to

When he lowered his head to kiss me, I put a hand on his chest. “No, Jax.” Immediately, he stopped. “You don’t want this?” “I do, but not if you’re going to make it a power play. Do it, Jax. Let me have you. Let me feel you. All of you.” His thumb slipped over the cusps of my bra, teasing my nipples, and I couldn’t help but arch into him. “My body is yours, Anna. All yours tonight.” His body. It wasn’t what I asked for, but he didn’t know that. And it was more than I was expecting. His head lowered again, and I slid my hands through his hair and opened myself to him. His kisses never failed to affect me from head to toe. With one sweep of his tongue, I ached for more. Tonight, I was going to have it. Restless, I tugged at his shirt and peeled it off him. He only broke the kiss for a second before he ravaged my mouth again, pushing me back against the table as my hands streaked over his muscles. His skin was hot beneath my touch, and he was catching me on fire. Insid

AnnaJenson took one look at us and growled disapprovingly, but he didn’t say anything before we climbed into his truck. There was no time for a shower, obviously, and also no time for arguing. I wanted to go alone, but Jax wouldn’t let me.Irene wasn’t surprised when the guard let us in. “Your second can wait outside,” she said stiffly, avoiding Jenson’s gaze.Wasn’t that interesting? The cottage that looked so cute in the afternoon sun was just a little bit creepier at night. All the lights were turned off, and there were candles lit on every surface and in every corner. I wanted to point out that it was a fire hazard, but then I noticed that the flames were dancing. Not even a little bit.“Is that your magic doing that? Has it returned?”“No,” she said mournfully. “It has not, but this isn’t my magic. It’s the natural elements respecting my wishes. Magic is all around us. It affects us even if we can’t wield it. Well, it affects most of us.”Misstep, I froze. “Shit. Is that going t

With a shrug, I turned back around, closed my eyes, and conjured the dream again.“I have you,” Jax whispered. “I will protect you and cherish you. Side-by-side, Anna.Together.”It was a shitty dream. One that was never going to happen, and usually, I tried to ignore it, but this time, I immersed myself in it completely. And then I began to fall.“Join us. Join us, witch, or everything you love will burn.”“No,” Irene said sharply and broke contact. I jumped and opened my eyes. She was pale and trembling. “My apologies. That was a vision from my past, and it has nothing to do with you. Please, try again. For me.”She took my hands, and I blew out my breath and closed my eyes. It took a little bit longer to relax, but when it did, I surfaced somewhere else.“You have to be quiet,” I whispered. “I know you’re in pain, but you have to be quiet, because if you don’t, he’ll hear you. If he hears you, he’ll remember you. Please.”A small dark room. There was a rough rug beneath my bare fee

Jax“You haven’t said a word since we left Irene’s,” Anna said finally as we pulled up to the house. When I didn’t turn to look at her, she let out a frustrated sigh. “Look, I don’t know what you saw. Was it through your eyes? Did you feel yourself kill that woman? I can’t change what happened, but at least tell me what’s going through your head.”Climbing out of the vehicle, I closed the door and finally made eye contact as she did the same. “I already knew that you were a killer.”“Knowing what I did and feeling what I did are two different things.”Taking out my keys, I headed to unlock the door. When I stepped through and Anna didn’t immediately follow me, I turned around to glare at her. She wasn’t even looking at me though. She was staring at her hands, and I saw the mistake that I was making. At her most vulnerable, Anna lashed out. She built walls and isolated herself. Now, here she was trying to reach out, and I was shutting her down. But what the hell was I supposed to say?

She prowled around the edge of the room and glanced at me warily. “You’re hard to read,” she said finally as she stopped at the bed.“All you need to know, going forward, is that everything I do is to protect you.” Pulling the sheet back, I gestured for her to climb in. “I need you.”She hesitated. “And when you don’t need me anymore?”“Our original deal still stands. You can leave.” She acted like she had a choice. Our one ace up the sleeve was that whoever was attacking the witches didn’t know that she was a null.Form her vision, she had to know that was probably no longer true. She was safest with me.“You haven’t been the most trustworthy. I don’t know anything about you. I don’t even know how you became an alpha.” Slipping in the sheets, she turned her back to me.The silence grew between us. “Parker didn’t tell you?” I said finally.“I never asked. It didn’t seem important at the time.”Staring at the ceiling, I grimaced. “Parker was supposed to teach you about pack dynamics an

Mica squeezed her eyes shut tightly. Her stomach churned. It was exactly what she thought—they weren’t even going to try to save Echo, too certain in their own knowledge.“It has to happen soon, Hayden,” Ryder said, his voice low, urgent, and… sorrowful. “I can’t keep holding my tongue. You are my Alpha, and I’ve tried to respect your decisions, but the situation is becoming untenable. This is my mother and my sister we’re talking about. I will tell Mica, if that’s what you would prefer.”“No,” Hayden answered. Why? Why did he not want Ryder to tell her? Tears filled Mica’s eyes and she crept away, not wanting to hear any more. Was Hayden afraid she’d let Echo go? Did he think it was up to him as her mate to tell her that he was going to kill her mother? He doesn’t consider it killing Mom, though. He considers it a mercy, freeing her from the demon. It didn’t make Mica feel any better. She carefully opened the kitchen door, slipped through, and softly closed it. Her heart pounded in h

MicaMica stared at the page. She’d been reading for so long that the words were starting to blur, but if she was right in her interpretations here… She blinked, rubbed her eyes, and focused again. As she reread the section, her heart started to beat faster.“And the demon was taken from its host and trapped in the stone,” she whispered. “Where it was trapped for all eternity.”She scanned the rest of the page. Hope swelled through her, even though she fought against it. It had been so long since this started, she wasn’t sure she could take it if this didn’t work. But there was the ritual all laid out. The way to force an aura-demon from the person it was possessing, and trapping it into an inanimate object. Once in the object, the demon would be trapped until said object was destroyed. Her mind whirled as to what they could use to trap the demon inside of Echo. There was a size limit to work with. A rock would be the best; then she’d put it in a plastic, air-tight box and bury it as

Monroe laughed. “Spoken like a true female. Completely wrong.”Spencer and the rest of his people burst into laughter as well. They all stalked away, taking their torches with them. A flash of lightning flickered soundlessly in the distance. Hayden turned to his pack. They watched with uncertain gazes.“Two days,” he said loudly. “And then you will know you put your faith in the right Alpha. We will have Bluebell Valley, and things will get better.”He smiled at them reassuringly. As they dispersed, Finn and Blayke sidled over to him. Finn spoke in a low voice.“Spencer is the only one not showing signs of possession,” he said under his voice. “Everyone else is either claimed or at least influenced. It’s spreading.”Hayden nodded once. Finn would prefer they take more decisive, more immediate action. Hayden couldn’t blame him, knowing his history. He had a particular reason to hate demons, seeing how they robbed him of any chance he might have had to have a normal family, a normal lif

Hayden“Stay here. I’ll be back shortly,” Hayden ordered as he stalked back to the bedroom. As he threw on his clothes, he frowned. Mica was dressing as well. “I said—”“I’m your mate. I’ll stand with you,” she said shortly.Hayden shook his head. “You’ll stay within the property bounds.”Mica huffed at him but didn’t respond. The two of them were ready quickly. Mica swept her hair into a bun as they headed downstairs. Torches lit the night, dozens of Monroe’s pack carrying them as the flames flickered and glowed. Hayden’s wolf snarled at the sight of Monroe, standing with his toes against the PCP piping at the gate.“Ah, decided to join us, did you?” Monroe drawled. “I was starting to think that your little challenge was all talk and no action.”His people laughed. Hayden ignored the low-hanging fruit and stopped just inside the protective barrier. “Are you finally going to accept my challenge, or will you continue to be a coward?”Monroe smirked. “What do you think I’m here for? It’

“Brother coming through,” Ryder called from outside, then he stepped into the entrance. He grabbed a pair of shorts and yanked them on, carefully not watching Mica and Hayden. Mica kissed Hayden’s cheek. “I’ll be up in a bit.” He nodded, and Mica slipped back outside. It was utterly dark now, and she had to use a flashlight to navigate the camp. Everyone else could simply see in the dark but with her weak human eyes… But nobody brought it up, not like they wouldhave in other circumstances. She headed upstairs once she was satisfied everyone was set for the night. Hayden waited for her in bed, scrolling through the most recent demon research on the laptop. He closed it and set the laptop on the nightstand as he grinned at her. His hair was damp from the shower, the smell of soap mingling with his manly scent. Mica grabbed a nightgown from her dresser and changed. “I don’t like that nightgown,” Hayden told her. “It’s old and worn.” “And comfortable,” Mica snarked. “Yes. Whi

MicaThe beast-demon stalked along the boundary's edge, snorting as it tested the protections. With Hayden and the rest of the special ops in the forest, Mica had ordered that they let the demon wander and not engage. Hayden had taken all the best fighters with him, meaning her order was gladly obeyed. Nobody wanted to tangle with the beast.Unfortunately, such a sight was getting more common. Even the children who used to scream and hide now ignored it, snuffling around the edges of the property. Its twisted horns glowed in the rapidly oncoming darkness. Clouds shrouded the sky, making it even darker.“Hayden will be back soon,” Mica told Tess as she nervously looked at the beast.“I know.” She shook her head. “Let’s go back into the house. I don’t trust the sources that say the beast-demons are dumb. I don’t want it to report back to Monroe about what we talk about.”Mica nodded. That was the smarter idea. The two headed into the house and went up to Mica and Hayden’s room. With all

HaydenThe scent of tilled earth met Hayden’s nostrils as he drove through the town. The team was spread through a handful of vehicles, each one keeping watch. They had just escorted the cargo van to and from the city for the latest shopping trip. Last time, Spencer had attempted to stop them from leaving. This time, they had barely seen a sign of any other wolf in the town. It seemed as though Monroe was keeping them busy elsewhere. This was why, along with food, Hayden bought a handful of camera drones from the city. Patience was a virtue, but sitting idly by without finding any additional information was a flaw that could easily prove fatal. He pulled to a stop in front of Monroe’s house and got out of the car, leaving the engine idling. The team all hopped out of their vehicles and gathered in formation around him.“Monroe,” Hayden bellowed. “Quit hiding and face me!”The door slammed open, but it wasn’t the possessed Alpha who came out. Instead, it was Spencer. He walked with a s

Mica didn’t want this to end. She never wanted it to end. And if that meant holding her questions inside and refusing to let any of them out? That’s just what it would have to be.She wasn’t going to give Hayden up. Now that she had him, she wanted to keep him. So she held him tighter, fighting against the pressure building through her. Instead, she kissed him, the way he wanted. And their eyes remained locked open on each other as they continued the dance as old as time.***Chirping birds just outside of the window woke Mica in the early morning. She sleepily buried her face into Hayden’s chest, unwilling to get up just yet. Their naked bodies pressed together, soft and warm in the cool morning. Being in Hayden’s arms always made her feel safe and secure. His strength seemed to seep into her, giving her everything she needed to face their situation. The previous night’s activities had kept them up quite late. Mica hoped she wouldn’t be too tired to perform her duties today. Not that

MicaThe pack took the news of Monroe's possession by a demon reasonably well. At least, none of them went running around flailing their hands in the air, proclaiming they were all doomed. What they whispered to each other was another thing altogether, but Mica didn’t spare the worry about that possibility. For the time being, she focused on taking care of injuries.Once she was done, Mica sought Hayden out. He was with his team, plotting out their next course of action. Mica found a spot at the side of the room to sit and wait until they were done.Maverick shot her an uneasy glance but focused back on Hayden. It seemed to Mica he didn’t want her there, but until his Alpha was going to say something, he’d accept it. Hayden hadn’t paid much attention to her entrance into the room except to briefly glance at her. “That’s enough for tonight,” he said finally. “Tomorrow, we’ll start training the pack on how to fight the beast-demons. Until they’re ready to fight, we’ll have to keep the
