He heard her before he saw her. Her back had gotten caught in a bramble bush and she yanked on it, trying to free it, as other brambles closed in around her. Her face got redder with every pull and Hayden chuckled to himself. No doubt she’d gotten caught up in the thorns because her weak human eyes couldn’t see anything in this darkness.

He took his human form again and pulled his boxers out of the clothing bundle he’d brought with him. Not that it mattered so much, seeing as they would be mates. But women could be strange about nudity.

Besides, if she was feeling particularly vengeful he didn’t want the crown jewels swinging in the wind.

“Mica,” he called, striding forward.

Her head jerked up. The moonlight highlighted the delicate blush in her pale cheeks. Her eyes trailed over his exposed torso, and she craned her neck to get a look lower. Then her gaze snapped back up to his face. She gave another tug on her pack.

“What are you doing out here?” he demanded. “Your friend is worried

MicaHe picked her up as easily as lifting a feather. She wasn’t even sure he’d grunted. The air disappeared around Mica as he dangled over Hayden’s shoulder, her hands clutching her pack reflexively. Her eyes were wide in shock as the vague shadows sped by her.Was he really kidnapping her? Thoughts dashed through Mica’s mind, too fast for her to catch. He reallywaskidnapping her. She thought this sort of caveman behavior only happened to other women. Nobody wanted her so badly that they would literally carry her off to his home. And, for that matter, how could he carry her? Mica was well aware she didn’t have the trimmest figure around. Even in high school, when the boys had to carry the girls, they stagged and stumbled when they picked her up. Yet Hayden acted as though she weighed nothing at all.Wait a minute! She wasn’t supposed to be marveling at his strength—she was supposed to be getting away from this asshole and all his asshole friends!“Let me go,” she cried.Just as somet

There wasn’t enough gauze to cover the cuts completely, so she layered it on carefully and taped it before pulling out her clothes. This was going to ruin them for sure. She didn’t have much to start with, since none of the local stores sold anything in her size, but it was the best she could do.Why am I even doing this for the asshole? She sighed. Because she always hated to see something in pain. She even did her best to avoid eating meat because she didn’t enjoy the idea of anything with a face dying for her.“What was that thing?” she demanded, more to distract herself than anything else.“A beast demon.” Hayden’s voice was perfectly even. “My team and I hunt demons. There’s been an uptick here in the Bluebell Valleys, and we’re here to stop them.”“And that means challenging Monroe?” Mica muttered.“It does because he’s being possessed by one of them.”Her hands faltered. Possessed? Even after what she had seen, Mica wasn’t sure she could believe that. Hayden was just spouting no

HaydenHayden could understand Mica’s reluctance to stick around a place that was rife with demon possession. But the presence of the beast-demons meant he could no longer be gentle with Mica.“We don’t have time for these games,” he told her harshly. “You’re coming home; we’re to be mated, and then if you still want to leave, I’ll arrange for you to get out of Bluebell Valley territory until after we’ve taken out the demons.”Mica shook her head.“Your stubbornness is getting wearisome,” Hayden told her.She backed up a step. For a second, he thought he might see real fear in her eyes. But then her foot brushed against the demon’s claws. It reared up so quickly that Hayden didn’t have time to react before it slammed into Mica, sending her flying.Hayden leaped on the beast. He wrapped his thick arms around its head and twisted sharply first one way, then the other, until it went limp again. He threw down the creature in disgust, then turned to find Mica. She still lay crumpled on the

Hayden waved a hand, scoffing. “Echo always loved me. Her greatest fear was that her human daughter would never have a worthy mate. Now that I’ve decided to take her as a mate, I’m sure Echo will be thrilled.”Derek nodded, lowering his head as he did so. “Then I’m sure it won’t be an issue.”“Just get what we need.”Hayden went back to Mica’s room. By this time, Ryder had cleaned her up, and the bleeding had stopped. He had also given her an IV line with some sort of foul-smelling medicine. Hayden frowned at it and sent Ryder a questioning look. Medication wasn’t used often among shifters.“She regained consciousness and immediately started trying to leave,” Ryder said. “I had to sedate her. Saline fluids, painkillers, and a tranquilizer. The one thing I’m worried about is brain swelling. There’s no sign yet, but it was a pretty hard knock she took.”“Does she need someone to be with her?” Hayden asked, folding his arms. He didn’t look at Mica with her burning red hair knotted around

Mica After Hayden dragged her back to this room and Ryder reattached the IVs, scolding her all the while for messing with her medication, Mica sat on the bed, thinking. Clearly, she wasn’t going to be able to get out through the front door. First things first, though, she needed a clear head. Over the years, Mica had primarily been responsible for her own medications. She knew how IVs worked and turned off the feeds. She didn’t trust whatever Ryder was pumping into her. This time, though, she left them in place. That way, she could pretend to follow his commands until she found a way to escape. Maybe she could go out the window? Mica dragged the IV line with her as she went to gaze outside. As she tested the window, movement caught her eye. This side of the house was close to the forest, facing away from the road. As she watched, several of Hayden’s team came out of the forest, dragging one of the beasts with them. Nope. She wasn’t going back into the forest. And since she

HaydenHayden checked his appearance in the mirror. Many men chose to sew tuxes for their mating ceremonies, but he didn’t have time for that. So, it was his old suit instead. It was out of style and a little snug across his shoulders, but it still fit him well enough. He’d slicked his black hair back, and his eyes seemed to be brighter than usual. His wolf paced restlessly in his chest. Hayden touched just above his heart, trying to get hold of his emotions.Mica’s words kept turning over in his mind. She had been so emphatic when she said that she’d only consummate the mating for the sake of it being made legitimate. He hadn’t considered before now that she might truly not want him as her mate any longer. Did she really take his rejection so hard all those years ago?A knock came on the door. At Hayden’s call, Ryder entered, bringing with him the red ribbon that Hayden would tie around Mica’s wrist during the ceremony.Good. Ryder was just the wolf he wanted to talk to. “Stay a minu

MicaTess, Echo, and Ryder stood behind Mica while the rest of the team stood behind Hayden. It wasn’t strictly necessary to have a ceremony, certainly not a witnessed one. But it was tradition. Mica faced Hayden, watching as he cupped his hand in the bowl of water between them. He held it toward her, and she drank from his hand.“The first of my vows, to provide you sustenance,” he rumbled.Mica took a deep breath and dipped her fingers into the water. She held her hand toward him. Hayden caught her fingers in his mouth, and an unexpected spark shot through her. “The first of my vows. To return back your sustenance.”“The second of my vows, to protect you by my body,” Hayden said, drawing her nearer.“The second my vows, to give from my body,” Mica whispered.Hayden took the ribbon and tied it around her wrist. “To you, I bind myself.”Mica tied the other end. “To you, I bind myself.”Was this really happening? She still remembered the cold look in his eyes. Mica’s face turned hot as she pressed herself into her chair, wishing she could just disappear. When she turned to Hayden, silently pleading to be rescued.“Hayden?” Monroe called, sounding amused. “Do you have something to tell Mica?”Hayden’s jaw clenched. He jumped to his feet and glared at me. “I don’t know why you’d say that. You can never be my mate, Mica. I want a proper mate-bond, and you can’t give that to me. So go be in love with something else. The air left Mica’s lungs. Tears blurred her vision as Elin burst into peals of laughter. When Mica jumped to her feet and raced from the meeting hall, the rest of the pack laughed as well. After that, he never even looked at her without rolling his eyes. He laugh

Mica squeezed her eyes shut tightly. Her stomach churned. It was exactly what she thought—they weren’t even going to try to save Echo, too certain in their own knowledge.“It has to happen soon, Hayden,” Ryder said, his voice low, urgent, and… sorrowful. “I can’t keep holding my tongue. You are my Alpha, and I’ve tried to respect your decisions, but the situation is becoming untenable. This is my mother and my sister we’re talking about. I will tell Mica, if that’s what you would prefer.”“No,” Hayden answered. Why? Why did he not want Ryder to tell her? Tears filled Mica’s eyes and she crept away, not wanting to hear any more. Was Hayden afraid she’d let Echo go? Did he think it was up to him as her mate to tell her that he was going to kill her mother? He doesn’t consider it killing Mom, though. He considers it a mercy, freeing her from the demon. It didn’t make Mica feel any better. She carefully opened the kitchen door, slipped through, and softly closed it. Her heart pounded in h

MicaMica stared at the page. She’d been reading for so long that the words were starting to blur, but if she was right in her interpretations here… She blinked, rubbed her eyes, and focused again. As she reread the section, her heart started to beat faster.“And the demon was taken from its host and trapped in the stone,” she whispered. “Where it was trapped for all eternity.”She scanned the rest of the page. Hope swelled through her, even though she fought against it. It had been so long since this started, she wasn’t sure she could take it if this didn’t work. But there was the ritual all laid out. The way to force an aura-demon from the person it was possessing, and trapping it into an inanimate object. Once in the object, the demon would be trapped until said object was destroyed. Her mind whirled as to what they could use to trap the demon inside of Echo. There was a size limit to work with. A rock would be the best; then she’d put it in a plastic, air-tight box and bury it as

Monroe laughed. “Spoken like a true female. Completely wrong.”Spencer and the rest of his people burst into laughter as well. They all stalked away, taking their torches with them. A flash of lightning flickered soundlessly in the distance. Hayden turned to his pack. They watched with uncertain gazes.“Two days,” he said loudly. “And then you will know you put your faith in the right Alpha. We will have Bluebell Valley, and things will get better.”He smiled at them reassuringly. As they dispersed, Finn and Blayke sidled over to him. Finn spoke in a low voice.“Spencer is the only one not showing signs of possession,” he said under his voice. “Everyone else is either claimed or at least influenced. It’s spreading.”Hayden nodded once. Finn would prefer they take more decisive, more immediate action. Hayden couldn’t blame him, knowing his history. He had a particular reason to hate demons, seeing how they robbed him of any chance he might have had to have a normal family, a normal lif

Hayden“Stay here. I’ll be back shortly,” Hayden ordered as he stalked back to the bedroom. As he threw on his clothes, he frowned. Mica was dressing as well. “I said—”“I’m your mate. I’ll stand with you,” she said shortly.Hayden shook his head. “You’ll stay within the property bounds.”Mica huffed at him but didn’t respond. The two of them were ready quickly. Mica swept her hair into a bun as they headed downstairs. Torches lit the night, dozens of Monroe’s pack carrying them as the flames flickered and glowed. Hayden’s wolf snarled at the sight of Monroe, standing with his toes against the PCP piping at the gate.“Ah, decided to join us, did you?” Monroe drawled. “I was starting to think that your little challenge was all talk and no action.”His people laughed. Hayden ignored the low-hanging fruit and stopped just inside the protective barrier. “Are you finally going to accept my challenge, or will you continue to be a coward?”Monroe smirked. “What do you think I’m here for? “Brother coming through,” Ryder called from outside, then he stepped into the entrance. He grabbed a pair of shorts and yanked them on, carefully not watching Mica and Hayden.Mica kissed Hayden’s cheek. “I’ll be up in a bit.”He nodded, and Mica slipped back outside. It was utterly dark now, and she had to use a flashlight to navigate the camp. Everyone else could simply see in the dark but with her weak human eyes… But nobody brought it up, not like they wouldhave in other circumstances. She headed upstairs once she was satisfied everyone was set for the night.Hayden waited for her in bed, scrolling through the most recent demon research on the laptop. He closed it and set the laptop on the nightstand as he grinned at her.His hair was damp from the shower, the smell of soap mingling with his manly scent. Mica grabbed a nightgown from her dresser and changed.“I don’t like that nightgown,” Hayden told her. “It’s old and worn.”“And comfortable,” Mica snarked.“Yes. Which means you’

MicaThe beast-demon stalked along the boundary's edge, snorting as it tested the protections. With Hayden and the rest of the special ops in the forest, Mica had ordered that they let the demon wander and not engage. Hayden had taken all the best fighters with him, meaning her order was gladly obeyed. Nobody wanted to tangle with the beast.Unfortunately, such a sight was getting more common. Even the children who used to scream and hide now ignored it, snuffling around the edges of the property. Its twisted horns glowed in the rapidly oncoming darkness. Clouds shrouded the sky, making it even darker.“Hayden will be back soon,” Mica told Tess as she nervously looked at the beast.“I know.” She shook her head. “Let’s go back into the house. I don’t trust the sources that say the beast-demons are dumb. I don’t want it to report back to Monroe about what we talk about.”Mica nodded. That was the smarter idea. The two headed into the house and went up to Mica and Hayden’s room. With all

HaydenThe scent of tilled earth met Hayden’s nostrils as he drove through the town. The team was spread through a handful of vehicles, each one keeping watch. They had just escorted the cargo van to and from the city for the latest shopping trip. Last time, Spencer had attempted to stop them from leaving. This time, they had barely seen a sign of any other wolf in the town. It seemed as though Monroe was keeping them busy elsewhere. This was why, along with food, Hayden bought a handful of camera drones from the city. Patience was a virtue, but sitting idly by without finding any additional information was a flaw that could easily prove fatal. He pulled to a stop in front of Monroe’s house and got out of the car, leaving the engine idling. The team all hopped out of their vehicles and gathered in formation around him.“Monroe,” Hayden bellowed. “Quit hiding and face me!”The door slammed open, but it wasn’t the possessed Alpha who came out. Instead, it was Spencer. He walked with a s

Mica didn’t want this to end. She never wanted it to end. And if that meant holding her questions inside and refusing to let any of them out? That’s just what it would have to be.She wasn’t going to give Hayden up. Now that she had him, she wanted to keep him. So she held him tighter, fighting against the pressure building through her. Instead, she kissed him, the way he wanted. And their eyes remained locked open on each other as they continued the dance as old as time.***Chirping birds just outside of the window woke Mica in the early morning. She sleepily buried her face into Hayden’s chest, unwilling to get up just yet. Their naked bodies pressed together, soft and warm in the cool morning. Being in Hayden’s arms always made her feel safe and secure. MicaThe pack took the news of Monroe's possession by a demon reasonably well. At least, none of them went running around flailing their hands in the air, proclaiming they were all doomed. What they whispered to each other was another thing altogether, but Mica didn’t spare the worry about that possibility. For the time being, she focused on taking care of injuries.Once she was done, Mica sought Hayden out. He was with his team, plotting out their next course of action. Mica found a spot at the side of the room to sit and wait until they were done.Maverick shot her an uneasy glance but focused back on Hayden. It seemed to Mica he didn’t want her there, but until his Alpha was going to say something, he’d accept it. Hayden hadn’t paid much attention to her entrance into the room except to briefly glance at her. “That’s enough for tonight,” he said finally. “Tomorrow, we’ll start training the pack on how to fight the beast-demons. Until they’re ready to fight, we’ll have to keep the
