Mica

Tess, Echo, and Ryder stood behind Mica while the rest of the team stood behind Hayden. It wasn’t strictly necessary to have a ceremony, certainly not a witnessed one. But it was tradition. Mica faced Hayden, watching as he cupped his hand in the bowl of water between them. He held it toward her, and she drank from his hand.

“The first of my vows, to provide you sustenance,” he rumbled.

Mica took a deep breath and dipped her fingers into the water. She held her hand toward him. Hayden caught her fingers in his mouth, and an unexpected spark shot through her. “The first of my vows. To return back your sustenance.”

“The second of my vows, to protect you by my body,” Hayden said, drawing her nearer.

“The second my vows, to give from my body,” Mica whispered.

Hayden took the ribbon and tied it around her wrist. “To you, I bind myself.”

Mica tied the other end. “To you, I bind myself.”

Was this really happening?

She still remembered the cold look in his eyes. She remembered everything

Elin lowered her hand. “Sorry, Alpha, I was only stretching.”Monroe ignored her as he focused on Mica. “What did you just say, human girl?”Mica shrank into her seat. One of the adults nearby laughed. “She says she’s in love with Hayden.”Laughter erupted all around them. Mica’s face turned hot as she pressed herself into her chair, wishing she could just disappear. When she turned to Hayden, silently pleading to be rescued.“Hayden?” Monroe called, sounding amused. “Do you have something to tell Mica?”Hayden’s jaw clenched. He jumped to his feet and glared at me. “I don’t know why you’d say that. You can never be my mate, Mica. I want a proper mate-bond, and you can’t give that to me. So go be in love with something else. The air left Mica’s lungs. Tears blurred her vision as Elin burst into peals of laughter. When Mica jumped to her feet and raced from the meeting hall, the rest of the pack laughed as well. After that, he never even looked at her without rolling his eyes. He laugh

So much was happening. She needed time to process demons and her mother’s condition. She didn’t need any other complications on top of it.Hayden ran a hand through his sleek black hair. “You should rest. Do you need help getting out of that dress?”Mica glanced down at herself. It wasn’t exactly a glamorous thing. Tess had brought over one of her fancier dresses. Though both of them were curvy, Mica had had to squeeze into it. She could barely breathe without popping the zipper.“Um, I just need five minutes,” she said, feeling oddly shy.“Clothes are in the dresser,” Hayden said, nodding toward it. Then he went to the window and stood facing out, his back to her.Mica went to the dresser and opened the second drawer. Unsurprisingly, her clothes were all there. She just hoped it was Tess who grabbed her underwear. Quickly, she pulled out a t-shirt and a pair of pants, then carefully unzipped the dress. As she did so, Hayden let out a strangled sort of noise.“Are you okay?” Mica aske

HaydenKai pointed to a spot on the map. “We found a nest of beast-demons here. We killed all the adults and destroyed the eggs that we could find, but evidence points to the woods having far more of them than we first thought.”“Mica said that Monroe was having the pack wipe out the animals in the forest. That’s a lot of sacrifices to create new demons,” Hayden replied. His eyebrows furrowed as he considered their conundrum. “We need to concentrate our efforts on taking out Monroe. His demon seems to be the most powerful. Once we have it taken care of, we can teach the pack how to hunt and take out the beasts.”It was only a few hours since Monroe arrived at the house. It unsettled Hayden that the demon hadn’t taken his bait and agreed to the challenge right there. In the past, they were all blowhards whose arrogance had been their undoing.Either this one was wise to them or was simply more cautious. Perhaps it was biding its time, spinning out the challenge to give itself more time

The next day, even more wolves showed up. Hayden was woken by a knock on the door. He rolled out of bed and glanced at where Mica had laid down on the couch the night before. She had already been sleeping there when he came to the room. Now, she peeked through her lashes at him, then quickly closed her eyes and pretended to be asleep.Hayden threw on a shirt—he’d worn his shorts to bed—and slipped out of the room. Derek, who had been on watch the previous night, quietly explained what happened on the way downstairs. Just under two dozen more wolves had come to seek refuge here. He had arranged for them to be fed while he got Hayden.“Good thinking,” Hayden said, nodding approvingly. “With so many newcomers, we’re going to have to put them all to work, and they can’t do that on empty stomachs.”The deciding fight might not have happened yet, but any wolf that came to him to be shielded under him as an Alpha would receive a welcome. The biggest issue here was that the house wasn’t big e

“That’s what I said.”“Why? I’ve seen how cruel she’s been to you over the years.”Mica looked up. Her sea-green eyes were set with determination. “And so were you. If you want me to forgive you for what you’ve done to me, you have to show me why I should do that. I might hate Elin for what she did to me, but nobody deserves that. He won’t show her the patience you’ve given me.”An unexpected pang of guilt hit him square in the chest. Where did it come from? Mica’s accusations of cruelty toward her, or the fact that he hadn’t given Elin a second thought despite goading Monroe into the declaration that he’d take Elin as a mate?“Hayden.” Mica stepped closer and reached out as though she was going to take his hand. She pulled back and twisted her hands together instead. “Please. If I’m going to be your mate, then I can’t just ignore this.”Hayden searched her face. He could see how difficult it was for her to even ask, though he wasn’t sure why. Was itbecause she had no faith in him? Be

MicaHayden and the special ops team were ready to leave far earlier than Mica thought was possible. Her heart slammed as she saw them heading down the front path from the upper-floor window. A sudden, wild fear seized her that this was the last time she’d ever see Hayden. She couldn’t let him leave like this. Was it a weakness on her part? She didn’t even care. Not right now.She shoved the window. “Wait!”Not waiting to see if they stopped, she raced down the stairs. She burst out the door, relieved to see that the group had come to a stop. As she drew nearer, her stomach clenched. There were so many people looking! How could she know he wouldn’t pull away, proving to everyone that they weren’t true mates? So when she reached them, she ignored Hayden first. Instead, she hugged Ryder tightly. “Be careful. I’m out of my depth with Mom.”Ryder patted her back. “We’ll be back before you know it.”Mica nodded. A whirl of emotions swept through her as she stepped back. Though she intended

But if Hayden knew how to take care of Echo and stop this demon influence, Ryder would have insisted they do it already. In their previous missions, Hayden had never encountered a situation like this, where they wanted to save the person in danger of being possessed.Tess, clearing her throat, brought her attention back to her. “Before we start looking at that stuff, I did a bunch of research online last night and talked to Maverick. Demons apparently can’t cross salt boundaries. So I figured we could get all the salt we have in the house and make a barrier around the edge of the property.”Mica was impressed. “That’s a great idea. Do you know if it needs to be pure salt or can we use, like, pickle juice?”“I don’t. But you can still call the people going to the city and have them pick up as much salt as they can,” Tess suggested.“Good idea.” Mica made her way to the landline phone and called Renee’s cell phone. Few of the wolves in the Bluebell Valley pack used cell phones, but sin

HaydenHayden prided himself on his patience. So, he was patient as he waited for Monroe to leave his house. They had tracked Elin down here and watched from a distance to assess the situation. The town was set up in a circular pattern with the Alpha’s house at the center of it. The houses closest were reserved for the higher-up wolves; the further you got from the center of down, the more run-down things got. Several blocks away from the Alpha’s house was an apartment building for the single wolves who no longer wanted to live with their families. It was on the roof of this building that Hayden and his team camped out.Elin was locked in the attic. Hayden had seen her face several times against the iron bars as she tried to yank them free. Elin’s father had left the house shortly after Hayden and the team arrived, and so far, Monroe had spent that time in his study.“We need to get him out of there,” Hayden told Maverick and Derek. “Go give him a reason to leave. But don’t engage. Th

Mica squeezed her eyes shut tightly. Her stomach churned. It was exactly what she thought—they weren’t even going to try to save Echo, too certain in their own knowledge.“It has to happen soon, Hayden,” Ryder said, his voice low, urgent, and… sorrowful. “I can’t keep holding my tongue. You are my Alpha, and I’ve tried to respect your decisions, but the situation is becoming untenable. This is my mother and my sister we’re talking about. I will tell Mica, if that’s what you would prefer.”“No,” Hayden answered. Why? Why did he not want Ryder to tell her? Tears filled Mica’s eyes and she crept away, not wanting to hear any more. Was Hayden afraid she’d let Echo go? Did he think it was up to him as her mate to tell her that he was going to kill her mother? He doesn’t consider it killing Mom, though. He considers it a mercy, freeing her from the demon. It didn’t make Mica feel any better. She carefully opened the kitchen door, slipped through, and softly closed it. Her heart pounded in h

MicaMica stared at the page. She’d been reading for so long that the words were starting to blur, but if she was right in her interpretations here… She blinked, rubbed her eyes, and focused again. As she reread the section, her heart started to beat faster.“And the demon was taken from its host and trapped in the stone,” she whispered. “Where it was trapped for all eternity.”She scanned the rest of the page. Hope swelled through her, even though she fought against it. It had been so long since this started, she wasn’t sure she could take it if this didn’t work. But there was the ritual all laid out. The way to force an aura-demon from the person it was possessing, and trapping it into an inanimate object. Once in the object, the demon would be trapped until said object was destroyed. Her mind whirled as to what they could use to trap the demon inside of Echo. There was a size limit to work with. A rock would be the best; then she’d put it in a plastic, air-tight box and bury it as

Monroe laughed. “Spoken like a true female. Completely wrong.”Spencer and the rest of his people burst into laughter as well. They all stalked away, taking their torches with them. A flash of lightning flickered soundlessly in the distance. Hayden turned to his pack. They watched with uncertain gazes.“Two days,” he said loudly. “And then you will know you put your faith in the right Alpha. We will have Bluebell Valley, and things will get better.”He smiled at them reassuringly. As they dispersed, Finn and Blayke sidled over to him. Finn spoke in a low voice.“Spencer is the only one not showing signs of possession,” he said under his voice. “Everyone else is either claimed or at least influenced. It’s spreading.”Hayden nodded once. Finn would prefer they take more decisive, more immediate action. Hayden couldn’t blame him, knowing his history. He had a particular reason to hate demons, seeing how they robbed him of any chance he might have had to have a normal family, a normal lif

I’ll stand with you,” she said shortly.Hayden shook his head. “You’ll stay within the property bounds.”Mica huffed at him but didn’t respond. The two of them were ready quickly. Mica swept her hair into a bun as they headed downstairs. Torches lit the night, dozens of Monroe’s pack carrying them as the flames flickered and glowed. Hayden’s wolf snarled at the sight of Monroe, standing with his toes against the PCP piping at the gate.“Ah, decided to join us, did you?” Monroe drawled. “I was starting to think that your little challenge was all talk and no action.”His people laughed. Hayden ignored the low-hanging fruit and stopped just inside the protective barrier. “Are you finally going to accept my challenge, or will you continue to be a coward?”Monroe smirked. “What do you think I’m here for? “Brother coming through,” Ryder called from outside, then he stepped into the entrance. He grabbed a pair of shorts and yanked them on, carefully not watching Mica and Hayden. Mica kissed Hayden’s cheek. “I’ll be up in a bit.” He nodded, and Mica slipped back outside. It was utterly dark now, and she had to use a flashlight to navigate the camp. Everyone else could simply see in the dark but with her weak human eyes… But nobody brought it up, not like they wouldhave in other circumstances. She headed upstairs once she was satisfied everyone was set for the night. Hayden waited for her in bed, scrolling through the most recent demon research on the laptop. He closed it and set the laptop on the nightstand as he grinned at her. His hair was damp from the shower, the smell of soap mingling with his manly scent. Mica grabbed a nightgown from her dresser and changed. “I don’t like that nightgown,” Hayden told her. “It’s old and worn.” “And comfortable,” Mica snarked. “Yes. Whi

MicaThe beast-demon stalked along the boundary's edge, snorting as it tested the protections. With Hayden and the rest of the special ops in the forest, Mica had ordered that they let the demon wander and not engage. Hayden had taken all the best fighters with him, meaning her order was gladly obeyed. Nobody wanted to tangle with the beast.Unfortunately, such a sight was getting more common. Even the children who used to scream and hide now ignored it, snuffling around the edges of the property. Its twisted horns glowed in the rapidly oncoming darkness. Clouds shrouded the sky, making it even darker.“Hayden will be back soon,” Mica told Tess as she nervously looked at the beast.“I know.” She shook her head. “Let’s go back into the house. I don’t trust the sources that say the beast-demons are dumb. I don’t want it to report back to Monroe about what we talk about.”Mica nodded. That was the smarter idea. The two headed into the house and went up to Mica and Hayden’s room. With all

HaydenThe scent of tilled earth met Hayden’s nostrils as he drove through the town. The team was spread through a handful of vehicles, each one keeping watch. They had just escorted the cargo van to and from the city for the latest shopping trip. Last time, Spencer had attempted to stop them from leaving. This time, they had barely seen a sign of any other wolf in the town. It seemed as though Monroe was keeping them busy elsewhere. This was why, along with food, Hayden bought a handful of camera drones from the city. Patience was a virtue, but sitting idly by without finding any additional information was a flaw that could easily prove fatal. He pulled to a stop in front of Monroe’s house and got out of the car, leaving the engine idling. The team all hopped out of their vehicles and gathered in formation around him.“Monroe,” Hayden bellowed. “Quit hiding and face me!”The door slammed open, but it wasn’t the possessed Alpha who came out. Instead, it was Spencer. He walked with a s

She sleepily buried her face into Hayden’s chest, unwilling to get up just yet. Their naked bodies pressed together, soft and warm in the cool morning. MicaThe pack took the news of Monroe's possession by a demon reasonably well. At least, none of them went running around flailing their hands in the air, proclaiming they were all doomed. What they whispered to each other was another thing altogether, but Mica didn’t spare the worry about that possibility. For the time being, she focused on taking care of injuries.Once she was done, Mica sought Hayden out. He was with his team, plotting out their next course of action. Mica found a spot at the side of the room to sit and wait until they were done.Maverick shot her an uneasy glance but focused back on Hayden. It seemed to Mica he didn’t want her there, but until his Alpha was going to say something, he’d accept it. Hayden hadn’t paid much attention to her entrance into the room except to briefly glance at her. “That’s enough for tonight,” he said finally. “Tomorrow, we’ll start training the pack on how to fight the beast-demons.
