“Hayden, the demons—” Finn started but fell silent when Hayden lifted his hands.

“After,” Hayden murmured. “Right now, I need to focus on the fight.”

Finn looked troubled but nodded once. He silently finished applying the salve to Hayden’s visual injuries, then put the bottle away.

“Ready to admit defeat?” Monroe taunted from across the challenge grounds. “I’ll be merciful to your followers if you do. I’ll let them stay and earn back my favor. You, though, and your little team will be exiled on pain of death. Your mate, too.”

Hayden ignored him. It was more for the sake of the pack than him, anyway. He closed his eyes, breathing in the scent of the field. There was a curious mix of fresh-turned earth on thebreeze. He’d noticed it before, and from the rest of the pack, he learned that Monroe was doing some sort of construction project on the Alpha’s house.

Not that it mattered. It was just one more distraction.

Sweat trickled down his back. The heat of the sun was starting to become un

Prologue Anna They came without warning. As I glanced out the window, lightning streaked across the dark, furious sky revealing half a dozen silhouettes just a few feet from the window. Before the sky darkened again, they were in the hut. My father grabbed me and hurled me toward them like a bowling ball before shifting into his wolf form and breaking through the back door. Two bodies went down under me. Shock turned to immobilizing fear. Something pulled me back up. “Hold her.” Those were the only two words spoken, but the sound of his voice caught my attention. Confused, I snapped my head around, but he was already a wolf. Melting into the darkness, he was just a blur as he went after my father. They dragged me outside. Rain pelted the ground, and I slipped on the mud. It wasn’t a move to escape, but I was punished for it. Claws pushed me to my back and raked down my shoulder before resting against my neck. I stared into the dark eyes of the wolf and understood that th

Anna Three years later It was the third time in an hour that Danny’s hands accidentally brushed across my ass. There was no point in glaring at him or pushing his hand away. He’d just give me a sleazy grin and mouth sorry. It was just a show for the customers, or at least those customers who didn’t know who I was. When we were alone, he didn’t even bother with the fake apology. He didn’t have to apologize to me. I didn’t deserve it. So I ignored him as I pulled the wine out of the cooler beneath the bar and smiled at the customer in front of me. “Our chicken caprese sliders would go great with this wine,” I said as I pulled the cork. After pouring his glass, I nudge the menu in front of him. “Caprese, huh,” he grunted as he eyed me, the gleam of his wolf front and center. I didn’t need my own wolf to tell me that he was more powerful than me. Everyone was more powerful than me, but he wouldn’t touch me. This wasn’t his territory, and he had no idea who I was. Anna I sank as low as I could against the floor. Had I let my wolf out, she would have clawed through the floorboards, certain she wasn’t worthy of being on the same level as Jax. At his low laugh, my skin flushed with humiliation while my mind raced. For three years, I hadn’t seen him, and it wasn’t like he’d stopped by when I wasn’t at work. I lived above the bar. I was always here. I figured he’d just left me here to rot with the bar. Maybe part of me hoped that by making this bar profitable, I’d gain his attention. Prove that I could be a capable member of the pack. Nothing. Not a peep. It was obvious he couldn’t care less about me. Was he finally here to do what he should have done three years ago? What would happen if he’d decided to marry? It wasn’t common for wolves to marry someone else if they were mated, but it did happen. Would he need to kill me? Or maybe he’d figured out how to remove our mating bond. There was a witch attached to the clan. Maybe it was possi

Anna “You have to learn to trust me at some point.” The whisper in my ear heated my skin, and I tried not to wiggle against the body pressed to mine. I didn’t understand what he wanted. “You. I want you.” And he could always read my thoughts. Damn irritating. His low chuckle filled the darkness as his hand slid over my belly. I was naked. I was always naked, floating in the nothingness, and he was always here. A dream. Just a dream, except I wasn’t asleep. Not always. Not this time. “It’s hard to see you and not touch you. To see you and know that you won’t let me hold you.” Let him? Nobody let Jax do anything. If he wanted to hold me, he would. And that’s how I knew it wasn’t real. This was just the mate I wanted. The hero. The one who would listen and understand. That was not the real Jax Bishop. “Are you wet, baby? Let me see.” I never stopped him. Never wanted to stop him. My body never reacted this way to anyone, and what was the harm? Instead, I turned to

Anna Bile rose in my throat, but before he could touch me, the glass shattered. He paused, and I scrambled under the nearest metal table and tucked my injured leg beneath me. I gripped the leg like my life depended on it. The alarm stopped. “Fan out,” Jax growled. “Find out what happened.” Great. More people to witness my humiliation. “Alpha,” Danny called out. His voice trembled just a little, and I couldn’t help but scowl. Surely, he wasn’t worried that he’d be in trouble. “We’re back here.” Jax and two other wolves joined him. One was Jenson, and the other was a female that I didn’t recognize. She radiated power, so she was definitely high up in the pack. The alpha’s eyes darted to me and narrowed. “There was a report that she almost reached the river.” “Yes, sir. She ran. I caught her just in time,” Danny said proudly. “What were you doing here so late?” “She’s let this place become a pigsty. I’ve been giving her extra cleaning duties. I came back to make sure th

AnnaIn one swift move, he picked me up and tossed me back on the bed. Wincing at the pain, I dropped my gaze. There was no escape. Choosing a different tactic, I cleared my throat. “I apologize, Alpha. How can I be of service to you?”With a growl, he settled in the chair on the other side. It was almost comical to watch him fit his large body in the small armchair. With a frown, he picked up the crowbar and studied it before letting it fall back to the floor.“I am not here to take what’s mine, so relax,” he growled.Take what was his. I tried not to wince. It was true that I was his mate. That gave him plenty of power over me, power he’d never wielded. If he wanted to bed me, he would have done it before now. That gave me a little bit of peace, so I readjusted myself on the bed so I was more comfortable and tried not to stare at the dresser that was blocking my path.“For three years, I’ve left you alone. Given you a place to live. Let you do whatever you wanted so long as you didn

They were reportedly incredibly powerful.“Being alpha to the biggest pack in the region isn’t good enough for you?” I asked softly.“Greed is an excellent path to death. Just ask my father.”Jax was on his feet and climbing over me in an instant. My back pressed into the mattress, and I stared at him, for the first time, without fear.He needed me.“Snapping my neck isn’t going to get the information that you want.” “True, but there is only so much pain a person can take before they break. Do you know your breaking point?” He whispered.“A lifetime of torture, and no one’s found the breaking point yet.” I held his gaze longer than I’d ever looked any shifter in the eye. AnnaFor two days, I tried frantically to call her back. I needed to know what she knew. I needed to know why she’d wanted me to run.I needed her to know what Jax wanted me to do.My call never went through. It made sense. There were no phones deep in the mountains and definitely no phone service. However she’d made the call, it was clearly one way only.I couldn’t warn her.Other than that, I worried. My knee and ankle were still swollen and bruised, but I was able to put more weight on it. As long as I moved carefully and wore pants, Jax wouldn’t realize that I hadn’t fully healed.Danny never returned. None of the employees did. It occurred to me that this was the last time I’d be here. For three years, Fanged Smile had been my home. If everything went to plan, this would all just be a distant dream. It hadn’t all been bad. HaydenMonroe’s claws raked across Hayden’s flank, ripping out chunks of fur. Hayden twisted, clamping his jaws down on Monroe’s shoulder. They spun in a circle, Monroe seeming to try to rip himself free. The sun beat down on them, baking the smell of sweat and blood into their fur. Hayden’s mouth tasted ashy, but his mind was filled with Mica.Pain shot through his spine as Monroe twisted, flinging Hayden off in the dirt. The Alpha jumped at him, teeth bloodied and snapping. Hayden rolled away and kicked out his back legs at the same time. Monroe easily sidestepped the blow. Growls and howls of encouragement rang in Hayden’s ears. He recognized each of the voices. “Then I’ll do my best to earn your trust, Luna. I swear, whatever it takes.”“Thanks,” Mica said awkwardly. It had been so long since she and Elin had been friends. They’d never go back to the relationship they once had—not that Mica wanted that relationship. Looking back, she could see that they were friends mainly because of happenstance. They were neighbors, so they spent time together because there was nobody else around.Elin had had all the power in their friendship. Mica had been clingy, desperate to keep one friend in the pack. Then, when everyone started to talk about Mica and Hayden getting together, as though it was destined and nobody had a choice in the matter… well, Mica hadn’t realized how much Elin liked Hayden. Her friendship with Tess was built on a much more even footing. They had a better understanding of each other than Mica and Elin ever had. Perhaps, now, she and Elin would be able to navigate the situation and find a way to be friends again.“Can I ask how thin

MicaMica sat on the edge of the bed, frozen. Her gaze was unfocused, and both of her hands were pressed to her stomach. Her heart was beating so wildly that she wondered if it was going to blow up. If Hayden didn’t come back from this fight, she might hope it did.She should have said so much to him as he walked away. She should have tried harder to explain her thoughts. How could she not be afraid he’d be frightened? It had nothing to do with his skills! Nothing to do with his strength. It was all about the possibilities. Fuck, even a coyote could take down a wolf if it got in a lucky shot.Monroe was an Alpha who had held Bluebell Valley for well over forty years. He kept this territory for a reason. And now he was possessed by a demon, which made him even stronger.I should have told him that I love him. She’d tried, but it somehow got muddled up on the way out.A knock came on the door, and Elin, who was bringing a tray of food, slipped into the room. Her eyes were sympathetic as

She didn’t speak. The door shut behind them with a loud, final click.Hayden sucked in a deep breath, steadying himself. A baby. It changed everything, moving forward. Though he had never allowed himself to think about the ‘what if’ of whether Monroe defeated him, now… His wolf growled with renewed determination while his heart hammered. But was it because of the baby, or because of the way Mica had shown him her doubts? He checked on Ryder, finding him sleeping peacefully. Tess sat with him and Echo, and she got to her feet when he came in. Her long veil of black hair hid her face as she gazed at the floor.“How is he?” Hayden asked, nodding toward Ryder.“He’s developed a mild fever. I gave him some medication and am trying to keep him cool.” Tess’s shoulders slumped forward. “I’ve never seen an injury this bad. Even when Mica got sick, she was never this badly off. Echo hasn’t shown any signs of waking up. I will be giving her a sponge bath soon… but our efforts to keep her hydrate

HaydenBeing his mate proved her cowardice?Hayden tensed. His hands curled into fists as he stared at Mica. Her chin was lifted, her eyes bright with tears. Even though her lip trembled, she held his gaze, every inch of her exuding truth. Mica wasn’t just saying something to hurt him; she truly believed this. Which meant the only reason she agreed to be his mate was through fear.Fear of what exactly? Hayden ground his teeth together, not wanting to hear the answer. He stepped back from her. His wolf whimpered and whined. It wanted him to go to his mate, to pull her into his arms and reassure her of their bond. But Hayden couldn’t make himself do it.If she only agreed to be his mate from fear, everything he thought they had together was a lie. Her strength in solving problems for the pack was just her playing a role. It wasn’t genuine care and concern. And worse, their connection, the moments of passion and tenderness they had shared…Their baby.None of it meant the same to her as

A fresh chill washed over her, causing goosebumps to rise along her arms. Her scalp prickled, and her chest tightened. Now that she considered that possibility, it was swiftly followed by a stark truth staring her in the eye. If someone did come for her, there wasn’t much she could do.As a human in a pack of shifters, she had little recourse for self-defense. She’d have to have a gun in hand at all times, and she didn’t have access to that sort of weapon. Even then, a shifter could easily tear out her throat before she knew what was happening. She was defenseless. And worse, there was nothing she could do to protect her baby, now or in the future.Hayden pulled her close into the fiery heat of his body. “Mica, Mica,” he crooned. “It’s alright. Nothing is going to happen to you.”“You can’t know that.” As much as she wished he was strong enough to keep every threat far from her, Hayden was only one person. He couldn’t be at her side at all times, and he had to take care of his pack re

MicaMica grabbed a washcloth and dumped too much body wash onto it. She focused on the lather of suds, trying to pretend as though she wasn’t shaking all over. This wasn’t right. Hayden should be going into the challenge with full strength. Not healing from injuries like this. It didn’t matter if he was saying that she wasn’t to blame. She was. He knew it. She knew it.“I’ve allowed the demons to delay the challenge too long already,” Hayden said. She glanced at his face. His eyes were closed, face lifted slightly toward the shower head. Was he deliberately not looking at her? Or was it just from how exhausted he was? His muscular body sagged somewhat, as though he was fighting not to lean against the side of the shower.Mica wiped the dampness from her face and started washing his body. She could be strong for him. He was facing death; even though it made her chest ache to think about it, she couldn’t let herself break down. Not yet, at least. He was strong. The strongest person she

The tension that had been making his wolf on edge eased. His shoulders relaxed. It would take time, yes, but so long as Mica was willing to give him a chance, he would prove himself worthy.“How have things been while I was gone?” he asked.Mica shook her head. “We’re going to run out of supplies. Our food is low, and as for everything else… I don’t know what happened, but we’ve lost a quarter of our blankets. Not to mention medical supplies.”Hayden leaned into her touch as she resumed washing his body. “I stopped in to see Ryder. We got a message from Monroe, and I had to order Ryder to be strapped into place to keep him from leaving the medical room.”Mica winced as she glanced up at Hayden’s face. “He’s not happy with me.
