I woke up that morning, feeling the best I had in quite some time. The nightmares didn't torment me tonight and I was shocked when I had actually slept in until 11 a.m
Sitting up, I stretched and wiped the fogginess from my eyes. I slid off of the bed and nearly screamed when my eyes met Viktor's .
He was sitting on the couch, his elbow on the arm resting as his eyes were locked on my own. How long had he been here and did he really watch me sleep?
I completely forgot that I was in nothing but a thin tanktop and a pair of lace panties, but I didn't feel self-conscious. I certainly should have, after all he was a man while I still felt like a girl.
"That eager to take another look?" I smirked and crossed my arms over my chest. The butterflies bounced around in my stomach at the sight of him.
He was back to wearing his formal long sleeve shirt, black slacks, leather gloves, and a black mask over the lower half of his face. I could feel myself grow more irritated with his stupid mask, and my curiosity threatened to consume me.
He rolled his dark eyes, giving me a chill of excitement and tapped the watch he was wearing.
"Sooner or later we'll get that mask off." Aela smirked. She had her own idea of what we would do when we had access to the lower half of his face, most importantly his lips.
I grumbled, "I don't want it off so I can kiss the man." But even I could hear the falseness of my words.
I put my hands on my hips as I looked at him, "You've never slept in before?"
He shook his head no, and I watched as his untidy dark chocolate hair shifted with the movement.
I scoffed at him and walked over to my dresser, pulling out a blouse and some jean shorts. I glanced once to the splintered bathroom door and smirked.
Without giving him a chance to make a hasty escape, I turned away from him and pulled my tank top over my head.
A jolt of heat caressed my skin as I felt his eyes on me and my bare back erupted in goosebumps. My lips turned up into a smirk at the thought of his eyes roaming my body while I wasn't looking.
I slipped on a matching black bra and turned around to face him. His eyes were once again locked on my own.
"I could feel your eyes on me, y'know." I smirked at his gorgeous face. As much as I hated the mask he wore, it only added to his god-like sexiness.
A strange tingling sensation ran down my body and nestled itself between my legs as I watched him roll his eyes and look away.
I shrugged, "You broke down my bathroom door and I needed to get changed. Besides, you've already seen this before." I smirked.
With more confidence than I thought I possessed I walked towards him slowly. I was wearing nothing but a bra and underwear, yet I felt incredibly warm.
"You must take your job very seriously." I mused, letting my eyes roam the length of his body. "That doesn't sound like much fun, Viktor." I pouted, sticking my lower lip out teasingly.
Viktor made a huffing sound as he turned his head and peeled his eyes away from me. The movement looked forced, which only added to my confidence.
Whether he'd admit it or not, he was definitely tempted. I wondered how many young women he was tasked with watching over and how many had also tried to tempt him. The thought put a sour taste in my mouth.
"Maybe that'll change." I let my words roll slowly from my mouth, and I turned to put my clothes on.
I slipped on my clothes just in time for a light knock on the door.
"Come in." I called out, frustrated at the interruption.
Shannon peeked her head in my room with a surprised expression. Her eyes flitted from Viktor to the shattered bathroom door and finally back to me. I was sure my face was flushed, but I knew Shannon didn't jump to conclusions.
"Girl, I've been waiting forever for you." Shannon huffed and crossed her arms.
I gave her a sheepish smile, "Sorry, I slept in."
"You know Caroline's gonna have a fit. She's out at the gazebo waiting on you." Shannon shook her head disapprovingly.
My mouth popped open, I had completely forgot that Caroline was coming home today.
"Crap, lets go!" I sighed, my gaze flickering to Viktor's , only to lock eyes with him. Did this man spend his entire day just staring at me?
I followed Shannon from my bedroom. I didn't need to glance behind me to know Viktor was following. It was like I had a weird awareness of him.
As much as I wanted to, I didn't take the chance of stealing one of Sheila's muffins. Caroline was already going to be dramatic about my sleeping in.
We jogged up to the Gazebo just as Caroline stood from one of the chairs.
"Oh I see. Gone for a few day's and you've already forgotten about me." Caroline rolled her blue eyes and flicked her sandy blonde hair behind her shoulder.
I gave her a reassuring smile, knowing how dramatic Caroline could be. "Are you kidding? I could never forget you. You wouldn't let me if I tried." I teased her, and I watched her features relax a little.
Caroline was one of those girls who could never manage to put on a significant amount of weight. She was a little bit taller than me, but much more slim. I still had that rounded curviness to my body that refused to go away. No amount of training or exercising began to impact it.
I joined Caroline and Shannon at the table on the gazebo, my stomach rumbling at the sight of the food cart coming our way.
Caroline didn't bother asking as she grabbed a couple of the finger sandwiches, not that I mind. I always had breakfast and sometimes lunch with the two of them. Shannon gave me a small smile and I nodded. I wasn't sure why she still bothered asking when I never minded.
"So, you'd never believe what happened while I was gone." Caroline chirped and I sat back with a patient smile. Caroline took some time to get used to, but I dealt with her my entire childhood.
"What-" I began to ask her but she cut me off. I was waiting for her to notice.
"Here we go." Shannon said quietly, laughter running through her body.
Caroline's mouth opened just a little as her eyes roamed Viktor, "Who is that?" She raised her eyebrow at me, a sly smirk forming on her face.
"Um, he's-" Again, Caroline cut me off.
Her sly smirk deepened, "You went and got yourself a boyfriend while I was gone? Jeez, Arabella! He's massive." Caroline lowered her voice as she whispered to me, completely forgetting that Lycan's have super sensitive hearing.
"Caroline." I gave her a firm look and she held her hands up in defense.
"Let her talk, Caroline." Shannon shook her head.
Her sly smirk was still in place. "What? He is,"
"Caroline, he's not my boyfriend. He's my bodyguard and his name is Viktor." I rolled my eyes, but I couldn't help glancing at Viktor. It seemed like his eyes were always glued to me, and I swore I could see something flickering in their depths at my words.
Caroline's mouth popped open with an audible click, "He's not your boyfriend?"
"Nope." I chuckled, and I knew where this conversation was going.
"Viktor, hm?" Caroline mused, her eyes roaming Viktor's body. I bit back an irritable growl, wondering what the hell was up with me today.
I picked at some fruit on my plate and exchanged knowing looks with Shannon.
"So, is he single?" Caroline looked sideways at Viktor, but his eyes were locked steady on me.
I bit back the strange possessiveness I felt towards Viktor and shrugged, "I have no idea."
"Well, haven't you asked?" Caroline spoke quietly, her eyes still on Viktor.
I rolled my eyes at her poor attempt at whispering, "He doesn't talk much and besides, why would I need to know that?" I scowled, that weird possessiveness came out of nowhere. Even if it wasn't my business, I wanted to know. Was Viktor seeing someone?
"Hey, Viktor?" Caroline giggled, and I glared at my fruit as his eyes flitted over to her for a second.
I sighed, and let my eyes wander back to his face. His full eyebrow twitched at Caroline, and I felt somewhat jealous. Caroline was always like this, and I never took it to heart but something about Viktor had me feeling differently.
"Do you have a girlfriend?" Caroline giggled, leaning forward in her chair as she gazed at him.
I bit back the smug grin that tried to form on my face when Viktor's eyes flicked back to my own.
"No." His obsidian eyes were locked on my own as he said this. His rough voice sent a shiver down me, something I was sure he noticed.
Caroline's voice cut through the silence, but his eyes remained on me. "Aw, that's a shame." Her tone said otherwise.
"What did you do before this, Viktor?" She practically purred his name and I rolled my eyes. I shoved the weird jealousy deep down. After all, Viktor was just my bodyguard. Just because I found it entertaining to tease him didn't mean I had some kind of claim over him.
I couldn't help but chuckle when Viktor ignored her. "I told you. He doesn't really talk." I shrugged, popping a grape in my mouth.
"Maybe I can change that." Caroline giggled, glancing back at Viktor.
I shrugged, "Hey if it works, let me know your secret."
"What were you going to say before you got distracted by Arabella's bodyguard?" Shannon smirked at the sheepish look on Caroline's face.
Caroline sputtered for a moment, "Well, just that I ran into an ex of mine and we really hit it off. We may have even kissed." She giggled, but her gaze always wandered back to Viktor.
"But, I think were both just better off as friends." Caroline added, a well placed look towards Viktor gave me all of the information I needed.
Shannon snickered, obviously seeing the same thing.
"Well, I have to get going. I have a long shift today." Shannon sighed. The two of us hugged her goodbye and continued chatting.
Caroline leaned forward in her seat, "So, there's this party tomorrow night and I want you to come." She was practically bouncing.
I frowned, "I'm not sure if Dad will say yes."
"Oh it's just a little party, nothing too serious. He's fine with you drinking alcohol, he shouldn't have an issue with a little party." She shrugged, flipping her hair behind her shoulder.
I rolled my eyes, "He's fine with me drinking alcohol because I'm a Lycan. You know it takes a lot for Lycan's to get drunk."
She shrugged, "Just ask him. Tell him it's a little gathering, and that Viktor will be there." She added with a little giggle.
"Alright, I'll ask him." I smirked.
"Arabella, could you come to my office?" My Uncle's voice ran through my head.
"Sure, be there in a few." I replied and ended the mind-link.
"I gotta go Caroline, my Uncle's calling me." I sighed.
Caroline laughed, "I love that mind-link thing you wolves have going on. It's like a cellphone in your head."
I chuckled, "Yeah, a cellphone you can never ignore or turn off."
"Don't forget to text me after you ask your Dad!" Caroline patted my arm as I stood from the chair.
I smirked down at her, "I won't forget. I'll try and catch up with you later!"
My Uncle's mind-link reminded me of what happened yesterday at dinner. I was sure my Dad and Uncle were hiding things from me. I knew some of the basics. We were on the brink of war at the moment with another Kingdom. I wasn't sure which Kingdom it was, as I hadn't met any of the other rulers.
Dad always tried to spare the gory details of what was happening in the world, despite my pleas. If I was going to take his place someday, I needed to know the full extent of everything. Uncle seemed more inclined to give me bits of truth, so I decided to start with him.
Now, let's see what I can get from my Uncle.
I made the trek from the gazebo to my Uncle's office. Over the years, I slowly memorized the entire house and all of it's maze-like corridors. As a child, I would often sneak to my Uncle or Dad's office to listen in on some of the meetings they had. While I couldn't understand most of their conversations, it made me feel like a spy.I knocked a couple times on the large oak door and waited. After a few moment's it swung open and someone stepped out. A strange looking man with an even stranger expression on his face."Princess Arabella." The man nodded, and I looked at him curiously. His light blue eyes trailed over my face slowly, and I felt like an exhibit on display. There was something in his gaze that made me uncomfortable. He had light colored hair that swooped over his head in a single directon. His matching colored beard hung down to his adam's apple. I couldn't recall ever meeting him before."Hello, sir." I nodded my head and gave him a small s
The rest of the evening went horrifically slow. My Uncle's words replayed in my head on a constant loop along with Viktor's two powerful words."Fuck power." His deep and rough voice combatted my Uncle's words with fury.I found it strange for someone like him to say "fuck power". Someone so huge and much faster than a normal Lycan. He seemed to be swimming in power."Shouldn't we put ourselves first for a change?" Aela frowned.I sighed, wishing it were that simple. "Aela, we're going to have an entire Kingdom to look after. Sometimes it's much bigger than that.""It's not as hard as you're making it out to be. Our mate was paired with us for a reason, they'll help us." Aela was confident."If we ever meet him." I sighed.I could only imagine how Aela was feeling. Humans and wolves were vastly different when it came to dealing with things. Being the daughter of the Alpha King, Aela's instincts are to protect her
I spent the rest of the day lounging about, horrifically bored. I gave Viktor a break with the teasing, fully planning on resuming once I dressed for the party.I wasn't dressing to impress anyone else, just Viktor. I wanted to see if he could keep his emotionless gaze when he saw what I was planning to wear.Caroline knocked on my bedroom door around 8:30 p.m. Viktor stepped inside my room as Caroline entered and leaned against the wall."Um, is he going to stay in here?" Caroline glanced at me, a confused look on her face.I chuckled and shook my head, "As long as you're here, he is.""I'm no threat to Arabella, but you on the other hand." Caroline smirked at Viktor, whose gaze was solely focused on me.I rolled my eyes. Once we got to the party she'd set her sights on some other poor victim and leave my bodyguard alone. "Come on Caroline, pick out a dress."We walked into the giant walk-in closet I rarely used and I pulled my dress
My stomach dropped when each of the men came forward, and I could see the gleam of gunmetal in their hands.I felt like time slowed just for a moment and I wondered what my Dad was doing. I wondered what he would think when I never came home that night.A small scream left my lips when the backdoor to the club slammed open with a loud bang. The metal door crashed against the bricks of the building at the force.Viktor ran out of the club, his golden eyes searching his surroundings rapidly."Just in time." Aela sounded relieved. He locked eyes with me and the aura radiating from him made me shrink closer to the chain link fence. He was beyond furious."That's not normal." Aela was stunned, even she could feel the power rolling from him.He leaped forward and grabbed me by the wrist, his leather gloves scorched my ice cold skin. I stumbled as he yanked me behind him and faced the men coming our way.I was sure they
I got ready for bed that night feeling more emotions than I thought humanly possible. Most of those emotions revolved around my god-like body guard and not the attempt on my life. What was so important about his identity that he couldn't just tell me? Was he worried I'd be scared? I had already seen him brutally murder four men. I wasn't sure he could get worse than that. And yet I couldn't shake the way I felt about him. He was alluring, comforting, and distant all at the same time. Most of my emotions stemmed from the massive guilt I was feeling. I had a mate somewhere out in the world, and here I was teasing and pursuing my deadly body guard.I couldn't help it though. The minute I chose to tease Viktor, it had been like jumping on a roller coaster at full speed. It was dangerous and I may not survive it, but I couldn't get off the ride no matter how much I wanted to.My attraction towards Viktor was intoxicating, but I felt like I was cheating
I woke up in the morning, the exhaustion from last nights events clung to me along with the chill the morning brought. While I wasn't drunk enough to forget last nights events, I knew I hadn't fallen asleep in my own bed. And yet, in my own bed is where I woke up.The blanket Viktor had placed around me was still curled around my fingers, the strangely intoxicating scent lingered on the blanket and gave me a sense of security.Viktor must have brought me back to my bed. The thought of him carrying me sent a shiver down my spine. I wished I had stayed awake long enough to enjoy the feeling of his arms around me.I felt like I was becoming more attached to him, but there was nothing I could do to stop it. My feelings were already ever so present in my mind, and there was no way of stuffing them back down.I hastily threw on some clothes and went into the bathroom to brush out my hair. By
My mind was reeling as I left Dad's office.I wasn't sure what to do with the information I had just found out.Viktor came to my Dad, offering his services as my bodyguard."Viktor knew about us?" Aela sounded confused and unsure."It sounds like it.." Even I was at a loss for words.I was more pressed than ever to find out the identity of Viktor, and the reason behind his mask and gloves.I went to the only person I could think of, my Uncle. He was the only person I knew who was also curious about Viktor's identity.I did my best to hide what I had learned from Viktor, but I wondered if he could feel she shift that had taken place within me.As I walked down the quiet corridor to my Uncle's office, I came up with my stupidest plan to date.I had little hope that it would be successful,
I laid awake until one or two in the morning wrestling with my own nerves.I was in a battle with myself on what I was about to do. My mind had been made up, but that didn't stop my conscience from arguing with me.My idea was downright stupid, and if Viktor wasn't my bodyguard I was sure he'd end my life the second he found out what I did."Are you sure you wanna do this?" Aela asked me.I rolled my eyes at her, "You were all for it hours ago.""I'm still all for it. However, I'm not interested in dying yet. I refuse to let you die a virgin." Aela shook her head and I scoffed."I'm going through with this. Hopefully we live to tell the tale." I shrugged.I slipped out of bed as quietly as possible, knowing his hearing could definitely extend to my room as well.I tiptoed across my floor like my life depended
One Month LaterI stood in front of my floor length mirror, my eyes narrowing suspiciously at the dress that flowed down my body. A nearly endless sea of deep green silk rolled down my body, my hair rippled down my back in dark waves. Dad wanted to call the stylists for today’s events, but I refused. My stomach was a cocoon of nerves and knots. The last thing I wanted was a team of people fluttering around me. I had Shannon do my make-up, her steady hands putting my eyeliner on effortlessly.“The dress looks amazing.” Shannon nodded, giving it a long look as I stood in front of the mirror.“You’re only saying that because you picked it out.” I chuckled, giving her a playful eyeroll.“And I did a damn good job.” Shannon huffed, fixing the straps of her own dress.A wave of calming energy washed over me as Viktor stepped out of the bathroom. His chocolate hair was tousled, begging to have
Two Days LaterNikolai Aslanov had been true to his word. Even though I knew he was responsible for the attack at my Birthday Gala, he found evidence against Elena Halifax. This evidence cleared Viktor’s name, letting him finally come back to me.I was unsure why Nikolai wanted to give Viktor and I a chance, but I didn’t argue with it. It was clear Nikolai expected Viktor and I to fail, hoping I would come to him after the fact. Nikolai Aslanov wanted a chance with me, yet he had a funny way of showing it. Trying to have me killed on my birthday wasn’t the best gesture.Viktor was able to return with August in two days. Viktor had turned around the minute I gave the news. He was naturally suspicious of Nikolai Aslanov’s motives, not that I could blame him. I could feel Viktor’s jealousy for his younger brother as I told him that Nikolai wanted a chance with me. I told Viktor what Nikolai had told me, that they were brothers. I asked
“I never told you about that.” I scoffed, “How did you know?”Caroline’s eyes widened, her lips fumbling over words. She knew she had been caught, with what I was unsure of. Everything ran much deeper than I had anticipated.I felt like a child, trying to play a game clearly designed for adults. Just when I thought I was finally gaining the upper hand, something happened. A new twist was thrown into the mix.Instead of backtracking, Caroline’s face contorted in anger. Any friendliness or companionship had faded from her face. Her light eyes were dull and lacked warmth, her lips turned up in a sneer.“Princess Arabella.” Caroline sneered, flipping her hair behind her shoulder. “Born the luckiest girl alive and doesn’t even know it.”“I don’t see what that has to do with anything, Caroline.” My voice conveyed the confusion and hurt I felt. Caroline looked nothing like
“Big brother?” My jaw dropped. The mask I had precariously placed on my face was shattered, long forgotten. I couldn’t tell if Nikolai was lying or not. There wasn’t an ounce of deceit on his face, nor was there any other emotion.“It seems you know little about your mate.” Nikolai shook his head regretfully, “What a shame. If you were mine, nothing would be kept from you. You would never be left in the dark.”“If Viktor’s your brother, why isn’t he in line for the throne?” My eyes narrowed at Nikolai, ignoring his last comment.“Viktor—as you know him by, hate’s being in charge of others.” Nikolai smiled grimly, “Viktor’s skill is ending lives. He never possessed the tasks necessary to rule.”“There are plenty of Royal’s skilled at ending lives.” I murmured; my eyes locked on Nikolai’s. “They use others to do the
“What a special human you must be.” Nikolai Aslanov gave Shannon a friendly grin, one I could tell was fake. Shannon must have been able to tell too, as her eyes hardened at his words. “Is the Halifax family not attending dinner? I was under the impression they were residing here for the time being, same goes for the other young Royal.”“Erik.” I pointed out, pressing my lips together gently.“Yes, Erik.” Nikolai smiled at me, as though the two of us were old friends.“Geoff and Elena Halifax are in mourning.” Dad grunted; his voice laced with sympathy. “Their son recently passed.”“Is that so?” Nikolai’s eyes widened in false surprise; his voice laced with the emotion. He was an expert alright, yet I could still see the curiosity in his gaze. “And how did that happen in a house with the Alpha King?”“He took his own life.” I pressed my
Arabella’s P.o.vI let Viktor’s voice lull me to sleep, staying connected to him until the darkness had taken me over.‘Goodnight, little Princess.’ Viktor murmured, the last thing I heard before sleep claimed me.I shot up in bed as my Dad’s voice flooded through my mind.‘Bella, are you awake?’ Dad’s voice rang out.‘I am now.’ I grumbled, wiping the sleep from my eyes. Shannon was still curled up on the couch, only her mess of curls visible from underneath the blanket.‘Geoff Halifax has decided to hold a funeral pyre for his son.’ My Dad informed me, ‘This should be easy enough to complete. We will be holding it tomorrow night. The Royal’s will stay leave after its completion.’‘And are we prepared for our dinner tonight.’ I winced at the harsh light streaming through my curtains.‘Everything is prepared.’ Dad n
Viktor’s P.o.vThe mark on my neck stung against the itchy fabric of my shirt. The pain reminded me that what happened wasn’t born from my imagination.I could have never anticipated someone like Princess Arabella, or her decision to accept me. Guilt swirled in my stomach, an emotion I had experienced little. The small Princess was making me feel things I had only heard about, but never experienced.I felt true fear for the first time in her presence. Fear had been a distant memory, present in the mind of child-like Viktor. My name had been different back then, but I had also been a different person. Fear was a constant companion as a child, but it was beaten and torn from my body until nothing remained. I had felt fear in its rawest forms at the Princess’s Birthday Gala. Her life had been hanging by a thread, threatened in her need to save my life. She knew nothing of my past, nothing of the things I’ve done and yet she still acce
I wasn’t surprised that Elena couldn’t smell my change in scent when she walked into my bedroom. My room had smelled like Viktor ever since he left. The smell had begun to fade, its intensity rising as I used Viktor’s body wash in my baths. My Dad had called everyone into the living room, Shannon and I included. Each Royal was present followed by, Uncle Jaspar, Dad, Shannon and me.Bryton Duboi gave me a hard look, one that held just a fraction of sympathy. Geoff Halifax looked haunted, like a Father who had lost his only son. Elena was playing the part of grieving Mother, not daring to show her real face in front of my Dad. Even Annalise Halifax had her own mask of sadness, though not nearly as convincing as her Mother. My heart hammered in my chest. I stood off to the side with Shannon, hoping my scent wouldn’t waft around the room. There were already many scents lingering to begin with, hopefully masking my own for the time being.
The decision I made hit me like a ton of bricks once Viktor and I were finished. I had thrown another kink into our plans, but I couldn’t bring myself to regret anything.Viktor and I were mates, why shouldn’t I complete the process with him? I refused to let Uncle Jaspar, Nikolai Aslanov or anyone else scare me away from being with my mate. Sooner or later the truth would have surfaced. Those who knew my scent would be able to smell I had completed the mating process. Only those familiar with Viktor’s scent would know who my mate was.“Little Princess.” Viktor frowned; his dark eyes were burning into my face.I realized I had gone silent, lost in my own thoughts as I slipped the clothes onto my body. The mate bond between Viktor and I was much stronger now. I couldn’t hear his thoughts or see his memories, but I picked up more emotion from him than I had in the past.Viktor was worried, worried I regrette
