Ashes to Ashes

*Ella*

I open my eyes, blinking into the eerie green light of the cramped room I was thrown into a few hours ago. The walls are made of stone and drip with condensation. I look up at the wooden ceiling where streaks of light filter down and cause the floor to dance with pockets of pale gray. The ceiling is a trap door; the room I’m in is an outdoor cellar. A set of slimy stairs lead up to the ceiling, the slime now covered with muddy footprints.

There’s nothing down here but me. No chair, bed, bathroom bucket, or food. The bastards who dragged me here stripped me of the coat I’d been wearing, and the chilly fall air bites into my skin. My hands, bound by iron shackles behind my back, are numb from the cold.

It’s raining now. Water has been dripping through the ceiling, but now rain pelts the wooden boards above my head so violently it rattles.

I close my eyes and imagine my studio, my paintings, mentally going through stacks of canvases and my inventory of paint. I’m just trying to

  • The Alpha King's Breeder   The Champion

LexaDays pass in a blur of pain, hunger, and little sleep. From the moment the stars begin to fade in the sky to the second the moon rises over the Glade, I’m in the sparring ring. Kaleb is always there, always watching, always discerning every movement in a cutting silence that I believe made it possible for me to dissociate my feelings, worries, and outright concern over my situation and the welfare of my friends and the task at hand. I can’t get out of this. There is nothing I can do to change my circumstances. “Again,” Kaleb says with no emotion, his tone dry and heavy as it bounces through the ring, off every curve of rusted metal. I throw the spear. Again and again, until my shoulder aches, and I have to switch sides. I’m right handed, but he has me practicing on the left side as well, just as often, in the event I… lose my arm. “Again,” he bellows. I send the spear tearing through the hot, sticky air. It pierces through the abdomen of the practice dummy in the center of t

  • The Alpha King's Breeder   Brother of Mine

LexaThe pack house of the Glade is remarkably similar to the ones in Silverhide and Endova. It’s a single wide, airy room with multiple entrances to the outside world but no windows. Long tables stretch in its center, but smaller tables and wobbly stools meant for moving around are scattered throughout the space. There’s a kitchen in the back–crude, however, with not much more than a few work tables and a wood-fired stove for cooking. But it’s the storeroom off the kitchen that takes my breath away, and not for the reason it should have. It’s nearly empty. Bags of flour, oats, and rice are depleted to near critical levels–barely enough to feed a single family. Dried, smoked meat hangs from hooks on the ceiling, scrapped down to the bone. I step out of the way as another set of fae–servants, I believe–step past me carrying bags of what smells like grain. They keep stacking and stacking but barely make a dent in what’s needed, and some of the ice guarding my heart melts at the sight o

  • The Alpha King's Breeder   Word From a Friend

KalebThe night sky melts into shades of orange and red as the first pyres are lit. Small crowds gather to throw flowers, coins, and other personal tokens into the crackling flames and smoke, which paint the sky a deep, rolling black, swallowing the stars. I stand in the shadow of the space between two buildings, my arms crossed, my skin already prickling with the heat fanning off the funeral fires. The flames will burn all night. It’ll take a massive amount of energy to burn through four-hundred bodies, but by morning, only ashes and flickering embers will remain, and the souls of those we lost to the fae and their twisted games will have been released into the world that waits for all mortals. I’m not sure I’m going there, to be honest. I’ll meet every fae king, their lords, and their warriors who allow this to happen at the gates of hell, and that’s a promise. A smooth, graceful shadow melds with mine as robes carrying the perfumed scent of roses and camphor swish to a stop besi

  • The Alpha King's Breeder   Secrets of the Glade

LexaMy heart skips a beat, then another, as Kaleb releases his grip on my arm. His dark, wavy hair is tied back, but rogue strands fall around his chiseled face. Everything about Kaleb is masculine. His height–several inches taller than me–tall enough that he has to look down at me–catches me off guard, as well as the way he moves with a predators grace–light on his feet but with determination in every step, muscles flexed, the fabric of his torn shirt rippling down his middle. I think he’s about to cage me against the rough metal wall of the sparring ring, but he steps past me, reaching for a long, wooden spear, and fists it, turning gracefully with the weapon in his hand, like it’s his toy of choice. “You’re going to learn to use these.”“Why?”“Because you won’t just be fighting men in the Trials.” He whips the spear around and pins the point in the dirt with practiced grace, leaning his weight against it. “You’ll be up against much worse than men.”“There’s nothing worse than m

  • The Alpha King's Breeder   Don't Say That Word

LexaI duck under his punch and twirl around him, sending my fist into his side. My knuckles meet rock-hard flesh and bounce back. He doesn’t so much as grunt in pain. He whirls, catching me by the arm in a grip like iron and yanks me toward him before I can find my bearings. It takes an instant. My life flashes before my eyes as he flips me into the air and slams me down on my back so hard the air rushes from my lungs, my body tingling with shock. He straddles me, pressing his forearm against my chest like a dead weight. I break past the pain and darkening vision and snatch his shirt with my free hand, my other twisted painfully behind my back. I catch the fabric. It tears over his shoulder, but his other hand grips my wrist and flattens my arm to the ground above my head, my muscles strained to their tearing point. Mere seconds have passed. That’s all it took. Seconds for a man to finally beat me in a fight. I gasp for breath but smile around the taste of blood. “Fucking prick!”

  • The Alpha King's Breeder   Child's Play

LexaI’m woken up by Lis in the late hours of morning. She barely says a word to me–tiptoes around me, in fact, keeping a wide distance between us as she shows me the bathroom located on the second floor, just down the hall from my room, and leaves a set of clothes and a small plate with bread, fresh butter, and a glass of milk on the table beneath the window in my room. My body feels leaden when I run a shower. There’s not much to be had in terms of hot water, but honestly, the cool spray feels nice given this place has little in the way of air conditioning, either. My mind is locked in a haze I have a hard time breaking free of, but after my shower, I change into the clothing Lis laid out for me. Men’s clothing, at least the pants. I tighten them with a belt. The shirt, however, is probably one of hers, given that it barely covers my belly button. After I eat, I tame my hair into a tight bun and start to move downstairs in search of anyone who can tell me where to find my friends,
