The ice-cold water splashed against my knuckles as I scraped the fabric against the washbasin. I watched in satisfaction as the soil of the day washes clean in the river, making me wish I could do the same and wash the filth of my life away. Since the day I was born, of unknown origin, I was taken into a house of horror and abuse with the Emery family.

Magnus Emery, Alpha of the Rafina Pack, is the worst of them all. I was found outside the Alpha house as a newborn, with no note or explanation as to where I had come from. I was given the name Sevika, which I learned later in life was a name that meant ‘slave’. Pretty fitting.

I cooked and cleaned like a slave, even some of the servants were treated better than me. They had their own quarters available, while I was awarded the shed out back. There were rare times I slept in a comfy bed, but I never got any sleep.

Those were the nights that Magnus took me to bed and used me in any way he saw fit. He defiled and traumatized me beyond any man could ever, taking away experiences I wanted to save for only the loveliest in my life, but I was a fool to ever think I would meet a person like that.

Because it is on this day that I learned the last sacrifice I would make for this family.

“Sevika, enough with the laundry! Alpha wants to see you, now,” a voice called from behind. I turned to see Faye Thurlow, the supposed future Luna of the Rafina pack, with rumours circulating that she was discussing marriage to Magnus.

Despite this, it hadn’t stopped him from calling me to his room time and time again.

“I’ll be right there, I’m almost done,” I called back.

Faye stomped over and swatted me in the back of the head.

“Did you not hear me? I said now. Don’t make him wait.”

Why me? I dropped the clothes back in the basket and left them there. If he wanted to see me that badly he could send someone else to finish my job, I assumed.

I followed Faye back to the Alpha House where it looked like every one of the family members had gathered in the living room. A disturbed feeling settled in the pit of my stomach.

“There she is, finally,” I heard Alaira Emery call out. She was pouting on the couch next to her father.

“Welcome, Sevika, have a seat,” he said.

There weren’t any seats available, but Magnus quickly tapped his lap with a grin. I wanted to scoff at him for his actions with his future wife standing right behind me, but nobody objected which forced me to follow order to avoid causing a scene. As Alpha, Magnus could’ve easily commanded me to do whatever he wanted, but he liked it better when I submitted myself.

I sat down on his lap and ignored the glare that Faye gave me.

“We called you here because we have something we wanted to offer you, and as a member of our family, we have taken care of you as well as we can,” Sir Emery started speaking. “We recently received a marriage proposal for Alaira here, but as you may know, we have already made plans for her marriage.”

I hadn’t heard anything about her marriage or who she was betrothed to. It was obvious that they wanted to avoid sending their daughter off to an unknown place and wanted to use me as a backup.

But this was also my chance to get the hell out of here. Is there anywhere else worse than here? If so, maybe I would finally be put out of my misery and have this horrid life end.

“What is it you want me to do?” I asked.

“I want you to take my place.” Alaira snickered, enjoying every moment of this.

“You want me to marry instead of you? Is that allowed?”

“The proposal is only for the daughter of the Emery family, I guess they failed to realize we now have two daughters and didn’t specify which one,” Sir Emery said.

I held my tongue in reminding them that he mentioned mere minutes ago that the proposal had come for Alaira. Regardless of what I said, it seemed they had made up their mind.

“May I ask who it is that I am marrying?” I asked.

Magnus tightened his grip on my waist. “Don’t worry about that, sweetheart. You’ll find out tomorrow when we send you off.”

Despite his words, I felt I needed to be very concerned.

It is Lady Emery who spoke up for me. “She at least deserves to know where she is going, this is a rather large sacrifice she is making, and she won’t be returning. Her service over the years here has been spectacular, it’s best to prepare her.”

Sir Emery waves her off. “Yes, I suppose you’re right.” He turned to me with a sombre look. “The marriage proposal has come from the Alpha King, Caspian Eros.”

The Alpha King? The rumoured tyrant king who has slaughtered every wife before and torments any of those who defy him?

It is clear now what their motive was; I was being sent off to die in place of Alaira.

I stood in front of the floor-length mirror as the maids fussed around me, making sure my dull blonde hair had some life to it and added light makeup around my eyes to make their amber colour pop more. I almost looked like a different person, someone who hadn’t lived her entire life in filth and servitude. What was going to happen when I got there, and he realized I wasn’t the person he asked for? Only time would tell, the Fira Pack only being a few hours away by carriage. I just hoped that if this was my end, he would make it quick and painless. I’m dressed in a plain white dress that looks more like a nightgown than a wedding dress and sent off.Only one person is waiting at the main gate, Magnus. The rest of the family, I assumed, were already celebrating my departure.“Are you here to see me off?” I asked him.He grinned at me. “I can’t let my precious Sevika be sent off all on her own, can I?” He grabbed strands of my hair delicately before grasping the back of my head. I am escorted to the bedroom by two maids. When we got to the door they tried to follow me inside.“We will help you get prepared for tonight,” one of them said.“Prepared? What for?”They both shared a look. “For your first night with the King, my Lady.”‘Ah, I didn’t think of that.’ “Please just have the clothes I am to wear tonight prepared; I will handle the rest.”They shook their heads. “We cannot do that, my Lady. We were instructed to see to you from start to finish, the King won’t be happy with us otherwise.”I sighed in defeat. I didn’t want them to get in trouble for not doing their job, but I also didn’t want them to discover the scars on my body and the mark on my neck. I didn’t see myself any higher above their status but that didn’t make me feel any less ashamed.I walked into the bathroom and stopped short of the large tub in the middle of the room.“Must you help me bathe? He won’t know if you do or not,” I asked. The maids looked at each other again. “As long as you

Caspian was still missing come the next morning and since I was used to waking up much earlier than everyone else, I was up before a maid was able to wake me up and tell me where I should go. I had no idea where the dining room was or when breakfast was even served.Thankfully a maid knocked on the door soon after.“Excuse me, my lady, is it alright for the doctor to come in now?” she asked.“What doctor? I never sent for one.”“No, but someone very concerned for you did,” a man chuckled and in walked a pack doctor. “I was hauled here in the middle of the night, but I was told to wait until you were awake. The name is Marlyn and there is nothing to fear, my lady, I’m just here for a routine check-up.”“A check-up for what?” I asked. I had never been seen by a doctor, my family always claimed I was healthy for my age and never needed to, though many times I had doubted that who was I to say differently?“Just to make sure everything is working as it should be. Just lay back and I’ll ru

Over the next few days, Caspian was present for every meal I had and tasted a piece of everything on my plate and in my glass before I touched it. He did this without being asked or it seemed without even thinking, and it both touched and tore at my heart. There was no need for him to go to this extent, so why was he? Everyone has always had ulterior motives for the overly nice things they do for someone, those motives in my experience had never been the greatest. So, was he planning anything? Or was he merely treating me nicely?Despite this positive change, things still hadn’t changed drastically between Caspian and I. It was still difficult for us to hold a conversation and it often made our meals together somewhat awkward.“There is something I’ve wanted to ask you,” he said suddenly.I nodded for him to go ahead.“You mentioned to the doctor that you have never shifted, but without a doubt, you are a werewolf. Why is that?”I sighed and got up out of my seat to circle the table t

The ride to the Rafina Pack was relatively smooth with surprisingly good weather the entire way. Caspian had made sure to run easy for me riding on top with nothing to grab but handfuls of fur that frequently slipped out between my fingers. Caspian and Jax easily disguised themselves as guards, and I dressed myself to look like a noble as best I could, hoping most wouldn’t recognize me here. I had to have looked different to some if you considered the condition I was in the last time I was in the Rafina Pack. Most couldn’t tell what my gender was despite my long hair, my face was always so dirty and my body so skinny, you couldn’t tell. I may not have put on any weight since then, but with the proper bath I was given, the hairstyle the maids gave me and my clothes, I looked like an actual person. “Where did the Elf say that gambling den was?” Caspian asked Jax. “He said it was in the marketplace, hidden in plain sight.” “That

Collinsworth met us at the alley again when the sun dipped below the horizon and the market streets became bare. He led us around the back of the empty building and to a small cellar door. He knocked three times and a slit in the door slid open, a single eye appeared.“Password?” he gruffly asked.“Ambrosia,” Collins whispered. The door rattled a couple of times before it was flung open, and a Cyclops orc took up the doorway. He eyed all of us for a few minutes before he nodded for us to get inside. The whole place stretched underground and looked like it had been thrown together recently, the wood beams still shedding from a fresh saw. There were several round tables scattered throughout the room with cards and plastic chips flying from hand to hand, as others slammed the tables and hooted loudly, the entire room filled with chaotic noise.“Where is the auction house?” I asked Collins over the mess.He pointed to the other side of the room next to the bar, where a red curtain divided

I could sense the tension from Caspian the entire way home and it makes me concerned for what awaits me when we get back to the manor. Jax stayed with us until we reached the front door but bowed his head slightly before he took off running, leaving me with the gut-wrenching feeling that I was about to face the wrath of the Alpha King.It was my first time being with a man in this way at all, I wasn’t used to such things as jealousy or knew when I was overstepping a line and being offensive. I was merely concerned about Collinsworth, who risked his life to get us in there just for something to heal my scars.Caspian waited at the front door for me to get off, then nodded with his head for me to go inside ahead of him. I gave him a hesitant look, but he nodded again and turned around to take off around the other side of the manor.“Where is he going?” I asked myself quietly.“He is going to visit his mother; he should be back later tonight.”I jumped at the sound of Carlak’s voice and

I covered my mouth in utter shock, unable to believe what I just heard.“How could they do that?” I asked.“There are many reasons, the biggest being they believed the rumours and would’ve rather die at their own hands than be tortured at mine.”“What were the other reasons?” I asked hesitantly. This seemed to be something he didn’t want to answer, but there was no going back, he had already revealed this much, and I had so many more questions.“If possible, I’d like for you to make me a promise first,” he said.I nodded.“Promise me that no matter what I say, you will listen until the end.”“Of course, I promise,” I said and sat up straight on the bed to show I was all ears.Caspian got comfortable as well at the edge of the bed and surprised me when he grabbed my hand to hold as he prepared himself.“I was born with two older siblings, a sister and a brother. I was born the weakest of the two, but since I was the youngest, there was no chance I would be next in line for the throne.

By the time I was woken up by Caspian, we had reached a small town called Pretrinos Toichos, which translated to Rock Wall, as the entire town was surrounded by a large naturally formed canyon that protected them from the outside world. It was a small town but seemed to flourish with many different types of creatures, all bustling and running about as we entered what looked to be a marketplace. “Let’s see if there is an inn we can stay at. Stay here, I’ll look around,” Rosalyn said. We seated ourselves on a bench outside a small flower shop, the aromatic smell overpowering. Caspian kept sniffling and sneezing around them. “Come on, let’s go over there, she can still see us,” I said and walked him over to the blacksmith where there was another bench. “You folks clearly aren’t from around here. What brings you to Petrinos?” the gruff and burly man asked as he beat an axe with a hammer, straightening out the piping-hot han

“What in the world is a Draknol?” I shrieked.“Well, it would be that thing. A hard armoured beetle with 10 legs and razor-sharp teeth that carry some of the realm's deadliest poison. These things are so massive, the common folk here hunt them to make homes out of.”I stared at her in shock. “They hunt them for homes?”“We will probably be passing through one of the towns, you’ll get to see for yourself. Now, Caspian, can you handle that thing?” she cried out.“Are you crazy? Even if I shifted, I’d barely be half the size of it!”“Don’t be a coward! Its teeth are too small to penetrate through your fur if you shift, so come on! Fight for your wife,” she cackled almost, and it worried me the slightest.“That thing is twice his size,” I said. She scoffed. “I’ve seen him fight bigger.”“What, when?”“During the Alpha Trials, how do you think he became King?”I always assumed it was because it ran in the family. Was that not how it usually worked?“It usually runs in the family, if the fa

Come the next morning, we were ready to set off again. Rosalyn was saying goodbye to her daughter before she left, while Caspian and I loaded up the carriage with her things, though he wouldn’t let me lift a finger.“Ready to go? It’s going to be a long journey where we’re going,” Rosalyn said.“How come? Won’t we arrive there once we cross the portal?”She shook her head. “We will only land in Elven territory, but to get to Silvershire, it will take about 2 days journey by carriage.”2 days even by carriage. This realm had to be massive. I was even more excited now to see it. I was seeing so many amazing things I never thought I’d get the chance to see.All because I agreed to be sold off to the Alpha King. Who would’ve thought a supposed death sentence would be the best thing to happen to me? As we had expected, the Queen Mother seemed delighted by the idea of us going away for a few days, despite her having already revealed that she knows who and what I really am. You would think someone like that would want to keep her enemies close, but since she is also being monitored by her subjects and staff, she can only do underhanded tricks in the meantime.Without Caspian being there, she could have had more influence over the staff and plot a bigger attempt on my life for when we got back. But we would expect that much, and I was going to be on high alert until this situation was dealt with entirely. She must’ve figured out already that poison wouldn’t do much against me, which could only mean she was going to up her game.Carlak would be our eyes and ears while we were away, but that only made me concerned for his wellbeing. The Queen Mother didn’t strike me as the kind of person who forgave easily, especially to a member of staff. Carlak is Caspian’s most entrusted servant, s

Caspian wasn’t kidding. Warlocks had magical powers that they often embedded into physical items, like crystals. Each crystal acted as a conduit of some sort, and they all performed different things. What we needed was one that recorded real-time moments with the ability for it to be stored and played back. If we caught his mother in the act of trying to kill me, we could prove her wicked ways and have her title and power removed at the very least. Then, she would no longer be a threat to me or Caspian. He could finally be the King I knew he could be, without the oppression of his mother. The only problem was the relationship between Warlocks and Werewolves, or the non-existent thereof. There was no chance they would allow us anywhere near their territory, let alone a favour as big as that.“If there is no way they would lend us a stone, why are we entertaining the idea?” I asked Caspian over dinner that night.“We may have someone of use, it is said that there are trade alliances bet

Caspian was shocked and pulled back. “Are you sure?”“We are married, it is only natural.”He sighed. “I want you to want this, Aurora.”“I wouldn’t be capable of touching you if this wasn’t what I wanted,” I pointed out.“Fair enough, but I am being too rash. You are still recovering; I can wait until you are feeling better.”I almost wanted to argue back that I was feeling perfectly fine, but with the combined heat from his body and the soothing calmness of his presence, I soon fell asleep again. When I awoke, Caspian was still there as promised and was still fast asleep. I no longer felt like lying down and had somewhat of an appetite now, but with how dark it was outside, I assumed Carlak wouldn’t be up right now, and I didn’t want to wake Caspian. So instead, I lay there and took the opportunity to admire him while he slept. He looked so peaceful and gentle, it was a stark comparison to the cold look he usually carried in his eyes, but I bet even if he were to open his eyes at th

When I opened my eyes I was back in bed, no doubt Caspian succeeded in getting to me in time, which meant I had a lot of explaining to do. I blinked my eyes a couple of times and looked around the room before I locked eye contact with Caspian next to me. I nearly screamed when I saw his haggard appearance. The shadows under his eyes were large enough to make their own shadow. “You have a lot to explain for,” he muttered, his voice hoarse. I immediately got up and bowed my head on the bed. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to deceive you with your mother’s request. I couldn’t say no.” He growled. “You could have come to inform me; I would’ve gone with you, and this could have all been avoided!” “The madam wouldn’t have allowed it, I’m afraid.” Carlak walked into the room with a tray of food and water. Caspian growled and turned around. “Why are you stopping me? He deserves death.” “He deserves far worse than that, but there isn’t anything that can be done. Please, do not do this, it isn’t what I want.” “Of course, it is what I want.” “Your Highness…” Carlak muttered. Caspian closed his eyes and composed himself. “What would you have me do about it, my dear?” I held his hand again. “I want you to help me get over it if you will.” His face softened and he squeezed my hand. Caspian was out the door before I had the chance to stop him. I knew exactly where he was headed but I was much too slow to keep up with him. He stormed out the front door just as Magnus and the family were getting in the carriage, and he hurled himself at Magnus, shifting before he touched the ground. “What is the meaning of this?” my mother cried out. “Why don’t we ask your son?” I heard Caspian’s voice rumble deep in my mind. My mother gasped and suddenly knelt. “W-we don’t k-know what you m-mean,” she struggled to even breath. “Caspian, stop it, please.” To my utter surprise, he had instantly let go of Magnus and backed away. “Sevi – Aurora, what is going on here?” I gazed at my mother. “I believe this is better discussed at home.” “Let this be a warning.
