Chapter 5: Saige

last update Last Updated: 2023-04-29 04:00:29

"I can watch her, Lori. I'm sure you have you hands full with the others."

"Thank you, Lia." Lori disappears into the crowded room.

Lia sets Saige down but keeps her little hand tucked in her own. They make their way over to Jael and Tyler.

"See, like a shadow," Jael whispers to Tyler.

"Hey, kiddo," Jael smiles at Saige.

"Hi Jae," Saige mumbles but she is staring at Tyler. Tyler looks between Jael and Lia.

"I'm not exactly great with kids," he admits, avoiding looking at the small child who is just staring at him.

Lia grins. "Saige, this is Tyler, he is one of your dad's students. He is from another pack."

"You know my dad?" Saige says.

"Uh yeah," Tyler nods. "He's a good trainer."

It is awkwardly quiet for a moment before Saige smiles at him. The small child begins talking the younger alpha's ear off now that she knows he is not a dangerous stranger really.

Tyler isn't sure what to do. So he just nods and listens to the little girl talk. He glances up at Lia when Saige let's go of her hand and takes his. Lia just shrugs.

"I guess she likes you," Lia grins, trying not to laugh.

"Hopefully won't damage your strong alpha image having a pigtailed 4 year old glued to your hand," Jael says.

"Nonsense, would be a difficult job if an alpha can't balance pack dynamics and a warrior."

They look up to see Luna Mira.

"Luna," they all greet her.

"I'm glad to see you all made it here safely," she says. "How has your stay been, Alpha Tyler?"

"It's been great. Made lots of new friends."

"I see that," the Luna smiles at the way Saige has latched onto him. "And your new friends will make for strong allies someday. The council will be pleased to know you are doing well. Your mother and father will be proud."

"Thank you, Luna Mira."

"The attack should be completely handled shortly, and you will be free for the rest of the afternoon while the Warriors assess and repair damages. I must continue my rounds."

"Of courses, Luna Mira." Tyler nods

"Thank you, Luna." Both Jael and Lia say.

Once the attack is ended and everyone begins to go back to their normal responsibilities, Lia is about to head to her house when she is stopped.

"Well done, Dahlia."

She turns to see the pack delta, James. She smiles. Praise from the ranked of the pack would make anyone feel good, but it meant more to her. He was one of her father's best friends. He was even her godfather. So Lia believes every word of his statement, James loves her like family.

"Roger says you got Alpha Tyler and your training group to the pack house, and helped administer aid," he continues.

"Just doing what any pack member should," she repeats what she had been taught to say.

"Your parents would be proud," he added, patting her on the shoulder.

"Thank you, sir," she smiles sadly.

Lia shuts off her alarm as she wakes up like she does every other day, but stops by her desk after getting dressed. There was a good sized box with a ribbon on her desk and a smaller one next to it. She opens the larger of the two and finds a new pair of shoes she had been telling her brother she wanted for training, but they had been a bit pricey and she was going to ask James about getting. Nash had got them for her. She set them aside and opens the small one. It had a set of headbands in it that had various flowers on them. She picked up one that had collarette dahlias. She notices another with waterlily dahlias. "Bit on the nose, but lovely," Nova grins in her mind. "Wear the waterlily one." She redoes her hair with the new headband. "Happy Birthday, Lia," Nova tells her as Lia looks in the mirror."Thanks, Nova," Lia smiles. "We could find our mate any day now," Nova reminds her. "Maybe," Lia nods. "You should head down soon, your family may think they are being stealthy, bu

No one complains when Roger lets them out of training earlier than usual. "Saige is so excited you guys are coming over for dinner," Roger says as they leave the training grounds. "Cam is cooking, so of course, we'll be there," Jael teases. "I should make you run laps for that, but I'll let It slide, this time because it's Lia's birthday." “So kind of you,” Jael grins. Lia and Tyler just watches the back and forth with amusement. Tyler was familiar with the fact by now that Jael will argue with anyone no matter what power or authority they might have. Her friends and family having to rein her in. Or at least that is how she was when it came to defending, and sometimes just interacting with, people she cares about. “Go home,” Roger tells them all as he shakes his head. “Happy birthday, Lia.” “Thanks, Roger.” They all head home to get ready for her birthday dinner. She lets herself into her home. It is quiet, as it usually is this time of day. Her brother is on patrol, but he alw

“HAPPY BIRTHDAY!” Saige shouts as loud as her little lungs can when Roger opens the door to let them in.“Thanks, Saige,” Lia laughs as she accepts the hug from the little girl. She waved at Nix and Tyler, who were talking in the living room. Lia was surprised to see Nix there. She knew he was Cameron’s half-brother, but she figured he’d be on patrol. She looked at Roger.“He managed to swap his shift with Harris for the night. Harris says ‘Happy Birthday’.”“That’s nice of him,” she gives a sad smile. She wished the same could have happened for her brother. She knows Nash was bothered by the fact that he couldn’t get out of his duties for one night. James had tried, but Beta Oliver was not having it. Oliver had insisted their best Warriors couldn’t be caught slacking. Everyone was putting in overtime. Birthdays happen every day in a pack their size. If every Warrior took it off, they would have a weaker defense. And that was not acceptable. “You okay?” Roger asks through a mind link

I'm sure when you find your mate., You'll have the best Luna.""You never know. It could be you. And a lot of alphas choose a mate. One they know will be a strong Luna."She looks at him and can tell he is absolutely serious. "Tyler…""Just…you know, think about it.""You would be a great Luna," Nova tells her. "But our mate will love us. It is worth the wait.""You don't think it could be him?" "You will always have your friends. A bond is a bond, mate or not. Forged in time or by the goddess, it is still a gift." "I hope you're right.""Anyone that cannot see the value in those bonds is not worth keeping. Respect is for more than just the Alpha

Over the next few weeks, Lia kept catching an amazing scent, but when she did, it was usually fading, and she could never find the source. Nova was getting frustrated. She knew it was their mate. Lia kept this between them. The thought of her conversation with Tyler was ever-present in her mind. It was disappointing knowing that this meant there was no chance Tyler was their mate. He wasn’t 18 yet. The scent couldn’t be his. She was even more crestfallen when Tyler’s stay came to an end. He had to return home to his pack and his future duties."You'll have to come to visit me soon," Tyler says, trying to hide the disappointment of leaving people he had grown to care about. A car waits behind him."Invite us to your birthday," Jael says. "Our alpha would be foolish not to let us go.""He would be." Tyler looks at an alpha's 18th is a big deal.""Only second to his alpha ceremony," Lia states."And his mating ceremony," he says, his eyes never leaving Lia's. She looks away. She hadn’t t

She goes on to tell him what happened with George and how James and Gunnar stepped in. Roger is less than happy about the whole thing. "It just doesn't make sense to me, or Nova. Like, Nova agrees, he's our mate, but…I don't even know him, and his sister hates me. James seemed unsettled by it.""Tell that beta kid you barely know him and that you want to go slow. This is not going anywhere near as well as she was told finding her mate would be. She nods. "Right," George says.“But Delta James is my godfather. Between him, Roger, and Cameron, they raised me until Nash was old enough to do it. They’re my family, really.”“Hmm, okay.” It is quiet as they finish eating. Luna Colette watched with pride as not only was her son being declared Alpha of the Valom Moon Pack, but the love of his life was by his side and being declared the pack Luna. They had been married in a small ceremony made up of members of Valor Moon and Haven River packs. Dahlia had been a beautiful bride who had happily given her hand to Tyler but sworn herself to the Valor Moon Pack in the process. Colette had never seen her son exude so much love and happiness. But today was a close second. She watches as the new Alpha swears his officers. Nix was being sworn in as his delta. Sam and Wendall had already sworn their oath of fealty and taken their place beside the new Alpha and Luna as Beta and Gamma. The new Gamma’s father had been one of Maxwell's most trusted advisors in the pack. Wendall had been chosen when Nash had turned down the role. The new Luna’s brother had wanted to stay to take Lia's spot alongside James as pack liason. The ceremony was officially wrapping up. "Did we

She had wanted to just run to him, again."Missed you too," he smiles. "And not that I'm complaining, but what are you doing here?" He sets her back on her feet as he asks. He hadn't expected her to visit so soon. They both had to finish school and she'd already missed days."I've been thinking about it and…I pick you."Tyler had not expected anything like that. He studies her face for any hint of doubt. "Really? You'll give up everything you worked for in your pack, to be
