I lived in a small, and up until recently, peaceful town. The town of Delwyn was a nowhere town. You couldn't even find it on a map. There were lots of wooded areas, forests, and two large lakes, each at opposite ends of the town. I guess you could say we had a hunter's paradise. Everyone owned trucks of one model or another built for off-road travel because of the rough terrain areas; whatever could get you through thick mud and rocky roads was your best vehicle of choice.
Five minutes or so was all it had taken for us to get to the main road. There was a green light ahead and we managed to make it through before it changed. "Make a left on Noliden, then go straight until you see Floneve." I said while looking out of the passenger side window. I didn't want to start a conversation, too much on my mind that I didn't want to share. I stayed silent until he asked where to go next. We were almost to Floneve now, driving about twenty-five miles per hour. "Turn right on Floneve; my house is on the corner. There's a white Chevy Equinox parked in front." I said, searching the streets for any suspicious figures as we turned onto Floneve. We parked directly behind my car. I heard Baltasar whistle from the backseat and I almost jumped, almost. "Nice car, nice house, are you rich or something?" He asked a little too enthusiastically. I couldn't help but giggle a little. "No, I wish. My parents owned this house and passed it on to me when they bought a new house." I took my seatbelt off and sat there very still, looking out of the window at the lavender and white house. It wasn't huge but it was a lot of space for just me. It has three bedrooms, a finished basement with laundry facilities, an upstairs with an attic, and two and a half bathrooms; plenty of space. I slowly turned my head to look at Vasilios who was already looking at me. "Is there someone you can call to stay with you tonight?" He asked. I thought about that for a second; the only person willing to get out of bed after midnight who lives near me is my best friend Celeste. She wouldn't be too happy about it, but she'd drop everything to help me when I needed her. I nodded yes to Vasilios. "Good." He said before he got out of the car. I watched him walk around the front of the car to my side and he opened the door. "Come on, I'm going to get you settled before your guest comes." He picked me up off of the leather seat, then stepped back and closed the door with his hip; giving it a firm bump. He carried me up the stairs and onto the porch where he set me down so I could unlock the door. "Do you have your keys on you?" He asked, putting his hands in the pockets of his sweatpants. "I left the door unlocked. I thought I'd be right back, you know?" I said, shrugging my shoulders. He simply nodded but didn’t comment. We went inside. Vasilios closed the door and locked it behind us. I limped over to the wall and turned on the lights. The living room was illuminated with soft light. I lived alone so my decor wasn't extravagant. I liked things simple. There was a beige & cream, microfiber suede sectional that wrapped around the room against the farthest wall. A glass coffee table with a small China vase in the center sat a few inches from the sectional. Across the room was a forty-five inch plasma T.V. kiddy-cornered. There were some potted plants near the window but other than that there was nothing special about it; Just a simple living room. Vasilios was already bringing me my cordless phone before I could walk into the living room completely. I sat down on the couch and dialed Celeste's number. She picked up after the second ring. "Hey chickie, I'm surprised you're still awake. What's up?" She sounded awake enough. "I need you to come over and spend the night. My feet are too swollen for me to do anything." "Really? Are you all right besides the swollen feet?" She asked with her voice becoming increasingly concerned. "Yes, thanks to a certain generous stranger." I said looking up at the man in question. Vasilios flashed me one of his charming smiles before looking away. "I'll be there, give me a few minutes." She sounded a little relieved. "See you soon." I said before hanging up. I sat the phone down beside me and sighed. "Can I get you a cold towel or an ice pack for your feet while we wait?" He asked. "Sure, the kitchen is down the hall to your right. There should be an ice pack in the freezer." Without another word he went to the kitchen. Celeste arrived about twenty or so minutes later. Vasilios let her in for me. When she walked into the living room, her ocean blue eyes went wide. I watched her mouth the words 'He is gorgeous' and it took everything in me not to laugh out loud. Celeste was tall and slender. She was around five feet seven inches with long legs like a model. Her hair came down to her shoulders in golden blonde spirals. Her skin tone reminded me of coffee with too many creams, a milky caramel. Celeste was three years older than me, twenty six years old. She had a degree in bioengineering, super intelligent. She had hoped we would go the same way in college but my passion was art. I loved creating new things; whether it was a new recipe or a drawing, I loved expressing myself through art of all forms. Celeste looked down at my cut up legs and I watched as her eyes filled with horror and concern. She came and sat next to me, her hand on her chest as if it had physically hurt her to see me in this condition. "Astraia, what the hell happened to you?" She asked. "Long story, I'll tell you all about it." I said, taking my slowly melting ice pack off of my left leg and putting it on my right. "I'll leave you ladies to it then. Astraia, I left my number on your refrigerator should you need anything." He said from the archway of the living room. I looked up at him, still curious about so many things. I assumed he wanted to see me again since he left me his number without a second thought. "Thank you Vasilios, for everything." I said. "Not a problem. If we see each other again, call me 'Lio'. I prefer it." He said with a smile. I felt myself blushing again and couldn't stop it. "I'll call you, Lio." I said, looking away from his suddenly intense gaze. "It was nice meeting you Celeste." He gave a nod to both of us before he let himself out. Celeste looked at me with a devious smirk. "What are you looking at?" I asked, sounding overly defensive. "I would've hurt myself on purpose to have a guy that hot take me home and play doctor. I saw how he was looking at you, Astraia. You're crazy if you don't call him." She teased. "Shut up Celeste, he was just being nice." I said, unable to control my grin. I grabbed the T.V. remote from the arm of the couch and turned it on. I flipped through the channels anxiously while Celeste babbled away about how sexy Vasilios was and what she’d love to do to him had she been in my position. I didn't comment but I didn't stop her from talking either. I was having similar if not identical thoughts about him myself.I was dreaming. I was standing in the middle of the forest at night wearing a white, spaghetti strap top with a long cotton skirt that flowed down over my feet like milk. My hair was pulled up into a pile of curls on the top of my head, leaving my neck bare. I was staring up at a full moon, hugging myself. Suddenly, Vasilios was standing behind me nuzzling my neck softly. I turned around and looked up into those silver eyes of his, and they were shining fiercely. He was smiling at me then, and it was different. His canine teeth were longer than they should have been, yet I still stood there smiling at him with adoration. Vasilios whispered something to me and then the dream changed to show me running through the forest, but I was in slow motion. I never understood why you could never run fast enough in your dreams. Vasilios was chasing me for whatever reason and he lunged forward reaching for me. Before I could see what happened next, the dream was broken by the sound of my phone
Later that night, I sat in bed eating popcorn and watching a romance/drama movie. Probably not the best idea considering what happened earlier but whatever. I had pulled my hair up into a ponytail and put on some pajama shorts that stopped just below my buttocks. I wore a sky blue t-shirt with the Mentos logo on it and no socks. It was quiet and peaceful in the house until I heard someone knocking at my door. It was a little after nine o’ clock so I wasn't sure who would be dropping by unannounced right now. I got out of bed and went to the front door. "Who is it?" I asked in a voice loud enough for whoever was on the other side to hear. "It's Vasilios and Baltasar. We need to talk to you." He said with slight urgency. What the hell did he think this was? "There's nothing to talk about Vasilios! Go away!" I shouted back at them. "Astraia, this is serious! You're in danger!" Baltasar said. My eyebrows scrunched and I shook my head. "Ha ha very funny! I'm not openin
When I came to, I was laying in a bed that I was sure wasn’t mine. I felt a gentle breeze from a window blowing against my face. Someone was sitting behind me. I felt the soft bristles of a brush going through my hair. It should have felt comforting, and it would have had I not witnessed what I did last night. I started to scramble out of bed and the mysterious person grabbed my shoulder, stopping me. I turned around to see who it was. A woman in her mid-thirties, violet eyes, and reddish orange hair sat smiling at me. She wasn't wearing any clothes at all, which made me look away quickly. “Calm down, I'm not going to hurt you. I just wanted to detangle that pretty hair of yours." She said, still smiling. I turned my back to her and she started brushing my hair again; she obviously did not care if I wanted her to or not. She used long, slow strokes and always ran her fingers through it after the brush reached the ends. "My mother used to brush my hair to relax me. I thou
My house was a disaster. All right so just the kitchen leading to the front door was a disaster. But at least both doors were fixed. The back and front doors had been replaced. Vasilios's friends told me that both doors had been reduced to mulch. There were pieces of wood, mud, and what looked like dried blood on the carpet in the hallway. It wasn't a large pool of blood, but it wasn't small either. There were sprinkles of blood on the walls also but nothing as bad as the carpet. I tried not to think of whose blood it was. It would make last night's events even more real to me. Vasilios's two friends were currently getting rid of the bloody carpet, putting down new carpet, and cleaning the walls. I owed Lio big time. Lio had sent Kyra and Githinji to protect me until he had a chance to meet with the wereleopard's clan leader. When I asked if he thought that would settle things he replied with, 'If things don't go over well, you won’t be the only one who's in danger.' I did not li
I sat in the back seat of their white impala. Kyra sat up front on the passenger side while Githinji drove. The impala was a 2009 model with cream leather seats. It was very clean inside and out. My admiration of the car stopped when we left the city limits. I stared out of the window as we passed the 'Welcome to Delwyn' sign. "They took him out of the city?" I asked. "To the outskirts. Their territory is up in the mountains outside of Delwyn. They have houses built into the surrounding lands at the base of the Abhora Mountains, but they do their clan business inside of the mountain caves." Githinji said. At some point someone had to question why groups of people were living in such secluded areas far away from civilized society, but I was sure those nosey people conveniently went missing. When we got to the Abhora Mountains, Githinji turned onto a narrow, gravel road that led to the back of a mountain side. I'd never been out here so I wasn't sure if this road has alway
We got into the white Impala and sped off into the night. When we arrived at Lio’s house, we sat in the living room in dead silence for a long time. Naremi sat next to me on the couch caressing my thigh trying to comfort me. Normally I’d be uncomfortable with such affections but my mind was clouded with too many things. She was wearing a long sundress that tied around her neck. It had a lot of fall colors like dark reds, yellows, and browns. I looked over at her and she pulled her hand back. “It’ll be all right Astraia. The Iron Claws clan is a clan of warriors. They haven’t lost a battle in decades.” I sighed heavily. “But they’re outnumbered Naremi…” It was her turn to sigh. “I know it looks bad, but trust me they’ll be fine.” She smiled at me then but the smile didn’t reach her eyes. I wasn’t just worried about their safety. If Lolita is still alive, which I had no doubts that she was, we were all in trouble. She wanted me dead; And even more than that she wanted L
For about four hours we sat in the bed talking. I told him about myself and answered some questions that he had, then he did the same. I learned that he actually was quite the hermit and preferred to be alone whenever he got the chance. He’s an avid reader; he’ll read anything no matter how long the book is. In high school he was on the football team, as well as track. He still goes for a run a few times out of the week but in this case he runs through the woods in his wolf form. I was the most surprised to learn what he does for a living. He has his own architecture company called Tri Build Architecture; it is one of the top five companies that is invested in most in the stock market. Tri Build shot up to the number two spot earlier this year, so he was financially secure. He was born in Aiea, Hawaii on October 27th, 1981 making him a Scorpio. There was a ten year age gap between us which wasn’t too bad; I didn’t mind it at all. The small details weren’t much but knowing a li
I was awakened by the sound of running water from the sink. I sat up in the bed and looked over to see Lio standing at the kitchen sink with a cup of water in his hand. He looked over at me and smiled; that smile a man gives a woman when he’s happy she’s the first one he sees in the morning. “Good morning.” I said not sounding quite like myself. “Actually, it would be ‘Good Afternoon’ sleepy head. It's fifteen minutes past noon.” The embarrassment must have shown on my face because he laughed. “It’s alright Astraia. I didn’t wake you up because I knew how tired you were. You don’t have to work today do you?” I shook my head no. “Good, you need a break. Would your boss agree to giving you a few days off?” He asked before taking a few sips of water. I almost never took any days off; this would be the first time in a year actually. “I’m sure he won’t mind. Why?” I said as I rubbed the little bits of eye crust from the corners of my eyes. Lio set his now empty
There was a highway coming up along with the fields and farms on either side. We’d been running faster than I realized. The wereleopards were still behind us and catching up fast. Some of the other wolves were ahead of us and only a few were at our sides. Every now and then we had met up with the Shifter Task Forces but they weren’t half as much trouble as the wereleopards were going to be. I raised my head enough to look over Naremi’s head and saw a large number of wereleopards heading towards us. It didn’t look like Naremi or Lio planned on stopping so I put my head back down and braced myself. I heard and felt Naremi growl beneath me as we got closer to the wereleopards. Naremi suddenly stopped, making me jerk forward a little. I raised my head again to see what had happened and found that we were surrounded. The leopards stalked towards us snarling. Lio stood in front of Naremi and I baring his fangs at them but they were unmoved. My heart was beating faster than I thought po
Two weeks later, we were still staying at the cabin and everything had collapsed into chaos. It was a war between man and beast with no end in sight. I’d found some comfort in having Celeste around. She and I were able to have conversations without her taking emotional shots at me now, so I was pretty sure that she was trying to forgive me. I unfortunately couldn’t say the same for my parents. I’d told them the truth last week over the phone and they haven’t answered my calls since. I wasn’t too surprised honestly, that’s exactly how normal people should have reacted. On a lighter note, Byana and her people left a few days ago. We’d rescued everyone from one of the containment facilities, but not without heavy losses. Some of the wolves questioned whether or not we should have left them there or not, which had a lot of them fighting amongst each other. The mood in the house was morbid; I could still feel a lot of tension and anger between everyone. We were tired, mourning our los
After a full report from Githinji, everyone did their best to unwind. There wasn’t much anyone could do at the moment, especially me. Celeste and I were lying on a blanket in the backyard close to the tree line. It was night time now and the stars weren’t out tonight. I had never seen the night sky so clear and blue before. We were on our backs looking over at each other, talking. I had gotten Celeste up to speed on everything, but I could tell that she wouldn’t be cozy around the wolves anytime soon. Baltasar was sporting a pretty red handprint on the right side of his face, compliments of Celeste. “How do you deal with all of this Astraia? All by yourself?” She asked. I sighed before I answered. “To be honest I don’t know if I’m dealing at all. There are a lot of things that I have to accept about their world. Even now, I feel like going back to my parent’s house and forgetting about everything I know. Unfortunately, I can’t.” Celeste turned onto her side, facing me.
As I had this inner battle with myself, my consciousness started to shift from where I was now to some unknown location. Whatever I was seeing was sort of blurry so I couldn’t make out the surroundings very clearly. I could see people walking through a wooded area and some were being carried by the others. It looked like some of them were severely injured too. The way I saw them was as if I were walking behind them, so I couldn’t see any faces. The faint sounds of their voices were whispers all jumbled together and nothing made much sense. I was able to look around so I tried to find anything that could give me a hint as to where I was. On the ground there was nothing too distinctive except some orange flowers that seemed to only grow at the bases of the trees. My vision started to clear up a bit more and I could see more clearly, I could even hear the voices better. I looked up at the people walking ahead of me and they began to slow down. There was a red headed woman support
I awakened the next morning feeling fully rested for once. Lio was lying on his stomach next to me sleeping soundly. His jet black curls were half way covering his face, the rest were fanned out on the pillow. I propped myself up on one elbow, my chin resting in the palm of my hand. With my other hand I started softly gliding my fingertips along his spine. The memories of last night started playing back in my head. The ritual was complete; I was his mate for life now. A lazy smile was fixed upon my lips as my fingers slid back up towards his shoulder blades and into his thick mass of black curls. There were many times I would lay in bed admiring him like this; if I were the first to wake up. This time was different, my thoughts and feelings were different. The current situation we were in didn’t fill me with as much anxiety as it did before. For once my uncertainty, worry, and doubts were not present to ruin my happiness. While I continued to watch Lio sleep peacefully, he began
Some might look at me and think, ‘that poor woman’. I thought that I was the luckiest woman alive to have found a man who loves me as much as Lio does. As we entered the cabin, Lio kept one hand on my waist while he held my other hand in his. I was a little unstable on my feet still but at least I could stand now. Githinji opened the door for us before stepping aside and letting us pass. He came in behind us and closed the door. We walked down a dimly lit hallway that led into the kitchen. There were a couple of people eating at a booth style table but I didn’t recognize them. “Where is everyone?” Lio asked no one in particular. A woman with long, dark blue curly locks, deep dimples, blue eyes, and caramel skin answered him. “Some are in the den, others in the basement. Lady Byana requests your presence upon arrival…” She spoke with her head lowered, not meeting his eyes. I took the behavior as fear at first, but I realized that it was something more; respect. Lio simply
I was lying in bed in the spare room of Adel’s house. There were two windows open halfway to let the gentle summer breeze inside. Adel had given me a cool bath to keep my body temperature from rising too high, which helped me relax a bit more. There was a thirty-four inch LG TV on a wall mount ahead of me. The soap opera channel was on but I wasn’t really paying attention to it. I looked over to the right side of the room to see Adel and Githinji sitting on chairs that appear to have been brought up from the dining room table. They were conversing quietly amongst themselves but I noticed them glancing over at me every now and then. I had not even an ounce of energy left in me, I felt so drained and tired. My eyes started to slowly close as I lay there. Before I could let myself slip into a dream state, Adel came to me and shook me. I opened my eyes startled. “Adel? Why would you do that!? You scared me…” I asked, sounding agitated and frightened at the same time. “I’m sorry
This room was different from what the throne room had looked like. Cotton, peach colored drapes covered the bland stone walls and lanterns burned brightly throughout the room. There was only a king sized, onyx platform bed. It was covered with peach, white, gold, and tan throw pillows of all shapes and sizes. A door was open to the right which looked like a huge master bathroom. This kind of custom living must’ve cost a fortune. Teris tossed me onto the bed like a person would a coat before sitting on the edge of the bed. I managed to sit up using one of my hands to keep me steady. I wasn’t sure how I was slowly regaining my strength but I was happy nonetheless. “Oh this is one of the best days of my existence, Astraia. Do you know why?” He asked, looking straight at me. I just shrugged my shoulders. “Today I will finally have my revenge and tear my enemy down to nothing. I will have the wolves as my slaves and their territory will be mine. Your pathetic brother is mer
I was lying on Petros’s lap in the back seat; against my will of course. Petros had been ready to fight anyone who offered to ride in the back with me unless it was my brother. One of the women at Iericho’s place had lent me a dress and a pair of underwear. I respectfully declined the underwear offer. There was no way I was going to wear another woman’s underwear, even in an emergency. Iericho was driving while one other man from his sloth sat in the passenger side. We were on our way to Teris’s mountain chateau. Most of Iericho’s people were there and the rest were following us in their own cars. I knew the wolves would come to my rescue, but I was still worried about what kind of state Lio was in. If I felt this weak and drained, he must feel the same if not worse. For once I wanted Lio and I to live a peaceful life together. Going into this relationship I knew the risks very well. Regardless, Lio had made me happier than I had ever been in my life. “Why are we going to T
