I was dreaming. I was standing in the middle of the forest at night wearing a white, spaghetti strap top with a long cotton skirt that flowed down over my feet like milk. My hair was pulled up into a pile of curls on the top of my head, leaving my neck bare. I was staring up at a full moon, hugging myself. Suddenly, Vasilios was standing behind me nuzzling my neck softly. I turned around and looked up into those silver eyes of his, and they were shining fiercely.
He was smiling at me then, and it was different. His canine teeth were longer than they should have been, yet I still stood there smiling at him with adoration. Vasilios whispered something to me and then the dream changed to show me running through the forest, but I was in slow motion. I never understood why you could never run fast enough in your dreams. Vasilios was chasing me for whatever reason and he lunged forward reaching for me. Before I could see what happened next, the dream was broken by the sound of my phone ringing. I sat up in bed rubbing my eyes and yawning. I picked up the cordless phone from its charger on my night stand and managed to answer it on the fourth ring. My eyes were still half closed. "...Hello?" I said in a voice heavy with sleep. "It's Celeste, wake up lazy bones!" She chimed loudly on the other end. I moved the phone from my ear until she stopped yelling. There was nothing like a loud wake up call. "Celeste, what do you want at," I looked over at the digital clock on my nightstand. "Eight o' clock in the morning?" I didn't hide the irritation in my voice. "We were supposed to be meeting up at the Gardener's Market, did you forget?" She asked, sounding disappointed. The truth was I did actually forget. It's been four days since the incident in the woods and I haven't had much sleep. I kept dreaming about the strangest things, they made me restless. And no, I hadn't called Vasilios. "Sorry Celeste, I'll be down there shortly. Are you already there?" "I'm on my way now. I'll be waiting for you in the parking lot. Don't forget a bag this time." She said teasing me. I never remembered to bring a bag; every time we went, I ended up sharing one with her. Her good mood upset me a little because I wasn't exactly a morning person. Celeste was usually awake before the birds could catch their worms. I had a master bathroom in my room so I didn't have to go too far to get ready. I looked over at the bathroom and noticed that I had left the light on all night. "All right I'm getting up right now, see you soon." I hung up and set my phone back on the charger before I hopped out of the bed and went to the bathroom. I looked at my face in the mirror; I looked puffy. There was a certain degree of roundness to my face that was the signature of sleep. My gray eyes were a dull shadow of Vasilios's startling silver ones. I reached into the shower and turned it on, all hot water. When I got out of the shower, I put on a blue jean baby doll skirt with a waist-length orange tank top that went over the waistline of the skirt. I added a blue jean half jacket over the tank top and threw on some orange, wedge-heel sandals that had a small orange bow at the ankles. I didn't bother styling my hair. I blow dried it to a frothy mass of fly away layers. I grabbed my wallet out of my underwear drawer and my keys from my nightstand, I was ready for the world. The Gardener's Market was downtown at the Colonial Nature Park. Long tables covered with all types of fresh produce were scattered in every part of the park. People were huddled around the tables with bags they had brought from home. I had a reusable grocery bag in my car so I grabbed it before I met Celeste by her car. Celeste and I were walking towards a table full of tropical fruits when she stopped suddenly. I stopped walking too, looking over at her. "What?" I asked confused. She was looking across the park at one of the vendors' tables when she pointed. "Astraia, isn't that the sexy guy who drove you home and played doctor with you a few days ago?" She was whispering as if the person she was pointing at would hear her. I looked in the direction she was pointing to and sure enough, Vasilios was standing with Baltasar and a few others. I put Celeste's arm down and started walking in the opposite direction to another table. I could hear Celeste's heels clicking behind me trying to catch up. I stopped at a table where a vendor was selling artichokes, spinach and avocados. I pretended to browse and at the same time hoped that Vasilios didn't notice us. After the dream I had this morning I was reluctant to speak to him. Silly I know, immature even. He had saved my life and here I was too scared to talk to him after a weird dream. That’s like having a dream that your boyfriend cheated on you and then waking up pissed off at him. Celeste stood next to me and picked up a bundle of spinach that still had a few beads of water clinging to the leaves. "Why are you avoiding him like this? You’re acting like he has a deadly virus or something." She said, setting the spinach back on the table. "Cute Celeste, very cute. Look, I'm grateful that he helped me. Really. But I know nothing about him." I said, still not meeting her eyes. "It's because you haven't tried to get to know him, Astraia. You're afraid of getting hurt again because of Julian." She said, looking deeply into my eyes. I frowned and looked over at her. Julian is an ex I hated to talk about more than any other. We dated for three years, and he mega-cheated. I found him in bed with not one, but three women. One of whom was my cousin. I never spoke to him or her again. "He-who-shall-not-be-named has a lot to do with it, but I have other reasons too." "Oh yeah? Like what?" She said, crossing her arms. "I have this strong attraction to him when I'm around him. I feel frozen, compelled to touch him, I can't explain it. Not just him, his friends too. It's too weird Celeste." I said, looking away from her again. "Did you just say “friends”? Can you introduce me to the cute ones?" She said suddenly excited. I rolled my eyes, coming to the realization that she wasn't listening to a word I had been saying. I felt a light poke on my shoulder and Celeste was stepping away from me with a huge, cheesy grin on her face. I turned around and looked ever so slowly up the length of a well toned body. Vasilios was standing in front of me, smiling that devastating smile. His curly black hair was free and flowing around his face. He was wearing a red and white plaid, long sleeve shirt with four of the buttons undone. I could see a triangular peek of his muscular chest. I allowed my eyes to linger a little lower down towards his stomach which appeared to be the start of a six pack. He wore khaki pants with the same white Nike Airs I had seen him in before. Baltasar, Kyra, and two other people I didn't recognize were standing off to the side conversing with each other. One of them was a woman with chocolate brown hair and pink highlights that was cut short. She was staring at me; and even though I was sure I'd never met her before, she was giving me a very unfriendly look. "You haven't called. I can assume you're doing well then?" He said, putting his hands into his pockets. I nodded yes before I spoke. "I'm fine, great actually. H-how are you?" My voice sounded nervous and shaky, what was wrong with me? "I'm good. I've been busy with work lately. I finally got a chance to take my vacation so I decided to visit the Gardener's Market today. I'm glad that I did." He said, raising his dark eyebrows. I shied away from him, smiling. It was nice to know that he was happy to see me again. Admittedly, I was glad to see him again as well despite my cowardice. "Listen, I was wondering if you would allow me to cook for you sometime. Maybe we could have dinner at your place this weekend?" He asked with an undertone of hope in his voice. I forced myself to look up at him again. I was NOT going to chicken out damn it. "I think I would like that very much, Lio." Phew, see? I can be brave. "Great, what day is best for you?" Before I had the chance to answer, the woman of the chocolate brown hair and pink highlights came up behind him and hopped onto Vasilios's back. She wrapped her slender, pale arms around his waists and looked around his shoulder at me. Both of our smiles faded and I looked away from them. Awkward didn’t come close to describing this situation. "Lio come on, I'm tired of waiting in this heat. Can't this wait?" The girl said in a sensual, flirty, purr of a voice to him. I assumed she was his woman or 'special friend', you know the kind. "Lisette, go back to the others please." He said, sounding suddenly tired. Lisette pouted with her full glossy lips. "But aren't you going to introduce me to your little friend, love?" She said with a certain chime in her voice. ‘Little friend?’ I was taller than her by at least two inches without heels and I was five foot four. She was putting on quite a show for me, protecting what was hers I guess. Vasilios took her hands from around his waist and stood next to her. This Lisette chick was staring at me; I could feel the weight of her gaze and it was almost too much. I gave her a blank stare. I wouldn't let her see how uncomfortable I really was. Celeste had left me to talk to Baltasar and the others long ago. Some friend. Lisette's big green eyes stared at me with a look that bluntly said, 'if you touch him, I'll kill you'. "Astraia, this is Lisette. Lisette, this is Astraia." Lio finally said. She offered her hand to me but something told me not to take it, I listened to that something. "It's nice to meet you, Lisette." I said. Lisette let her hand fall back to her side but continued smiling at me. "Charmed, I'm sure. I heard about your…Encounter, so sorry. It's a good thing my Lio is the heroic type." She said, smiling up at him. I wanted to knock the smile right off of her face. Her little possessive display was completely unnecessary and quite honestly wasted on me. Instead of losing my cool, I ignored her little comment and walked past her to go and get Celeste. It was past time to go at this point. "Astraia wait!" Lio's voice called behind me. I ignored him and walked up to Celeste who was still chatting away with Baltasar and his friends. I was too pissed to turn around and look at him. "Celeste we have to go, now." "Why? What's the matter?" She asked. Vasilios came over to me with the saddest expression on his face. "Astraia I apologize for her rudeness, she's a sourpuss to everyone. We're not an item and I'm sorry if you got that impression." He said. I shook my head. "It looked like you two were an item to me Lio. Actually, I think you two make a fine couple." I said bitterly as I started to walk away. Celeste didn't say anything but followed me towards the parking lot. Vasilios grabbed my hand and I snatched away from him. "Don't touch me! Don't ever touch me again Lio..." I said walking off for the last time. I'll never forget the pained expression on his face when I said those words. But so what? People will say anything when they get caught in a lie and I refuse to be lied to again.Later that night, I sat in bed eating popcorn and watching a romance/drama movie. Probably not the best idea considering what happened earlier but whatever. I had pulled my hair up into a ponytail and put on some pajama shorts that stopped just below my buttocks. I wore a sky blue t-shirt with the Mentos logo on it and no socks. It was quiet and peaceful in the house until I heard someone knocking at my door. It was a little after nine o’ clock so I wasn't sure who would be dropping by unannounced right now. I got out of bed and went to the front door. "Who is it?" I asked in a voice loud enough for whoever was on the other side to hear. "It's Vasilios and Baltasar. We need to talk to you." He said with slight urgency. What the hell did he think this was? "There's nothing to talk about Vasilios! Go away!" I shouted back at them. "Astraia, this is serious! You're in danger!" Baltasar said. My eyebrows scrunched and I shook my head. "Ha ha very funny! I'm not openin
When I came to, I was laying in a bed that I was sure wasn’t mine. I felt a gentle breeze from a window blowing against my face. Someone was sitting behind me. I felt the soft bristles of a brush going through my hair. It should have felt comforting, and it would have had I not witnessed what I did last night. I started to scramble out of bed and the mysterious person grabbed my shoulder, stopping me. I turned around to see who it was. A woman in her mid-thirties, violet eyes, and reddish orange hair sat smiling at me. She wasn't wearing any clothes at all, which made me look away quickly. “Calm down, I'm not going to hurt you. I just wanted to detangle that pretty hair of yours." She said, still smiling. I turned my back to her and she started brushing my hair again; she obviously did not care if I wanted her to or not. She used long, slow strokes and always ran her fingers through it after the brush reached the ends. "My mother used to brush my hair to relax me. I thou
My house was a disaster. All right so just the kitchen leading to the front door was a disaster. But at least both doors were fixed. The back and front doors had been replaced. Vasilios's friends told me that both doors had been reduced to mulch. There were pieces of wood, mud, and what looked like dried blood on the carpet in the hallway. It wasn't a large pool of blood, but it wasn't small either. There were sprinkles of blood on the walls also but nothing as bad as the carpet. I tried not to think of whose blood it was. It would make last night's events even more real to me. Vasilios's two friends were currently getting rid of the bloody carpet, putting down new carpet, and cleaning the walls. I owed Lio big time. Lio had sent Kyra and Githinji to protect me until he had a chance to meet with the wereleopard's clan leader. When I asked if he thought that would settle things he replied with, 'If things don't go over well, you won’t be the only one who's in danger.' I did not li
I sat in the back seat of their white impala. Kyra sat up front on the passenger side while Githinji drove. The impala was a 2009 model with cream leather seats. It was very clean inside and out. My admiration of the car stopped when we left the city limits. I stared out of the window as we passed the 'Welcome to Delwyn' sign. "They took him out of the city?" I asked. "To the outskirts. Their territory is up in the mountains outside of Delwyn. They have houses built into the surrounding lands at the base of the Abhora Mountains, but they do their clan business inside of the mountain caves." Githinji said. At some point someone had to question why groups of people were living in such secluded areas far away from civilized society, but I was sure those nosey people conveniently went missing. When we got to the Abhora Mountains, Githinji turned onto a narrow, gravel road that led to the back of a mountain side. I'd never been out here so I wasn't sure if this road has alway
We got into the white Impala and sped off into the night. When we arrived at Lio’s house, we sat in the living room in dead silence for a long time. Naremi sat next to me on the couch caressing my thigh trying to comfort me. Normally I’d be uncomfortable with such affections but my mind was clouded with too many things. She was wearing a long sundress that tied around her neck. It had a lot of fall colors like dark reds, yellows, and browns. I looked over at her and she pulled her hand back. “It’ll be all right Astraia. The Iron Claws clan is a clan of warriors. They haven’t lost a battle in decades.” I sighed heavily. “But they’re outnumbered Naremi…” It was her turn to sigh. “I know it looks bad, but trust me they’ll be fine.” She smiled at me then but the smile didn’t reach her eyes. I wasn’t just worried about their safety. If Lolita is still alive, which I had no doubts that she was, we were all in trouble. She wanted me dead; And even more than that she wanted L
For about four hours we sat in the bed talking. I told him about myself and answered some questions that he had, then he did the same. I learned that he actually was quite the hermit and preferred to be alone whenever he got the chance. He’s an avid reader; he’ll read anything no matter how long the book is. In high school he was on the football team, as well as track. He still goes for a run a few times out of the week but in this case he runs through the woods in his wolf form. I was the most surprised to learn what he does for a living. He has his own architecture company called Tri Build Architecture; it is one of the top five companies that is invested in most in the stock market. Tri Build shot up to the number two spot earlier this year, so he was financially secure. He was born in Aiea, Hawaii on October 27th, 1981 making him a Scorpio. There was a ten year age gap between us which wasn’t too bad; I didn’t mind it at all. The small details weren’t much but knowing a li
I was awakened by the sound of running water from the sink. I sat up in the bed and looked over to see Lio standing at the kitchen sink with a cup of water in his hand. He looked over at me and smiled; that smile a man gives a woman when he’s happy she’s the first one he sees in the morning. “Good morning.” I said not sounding quite like myself. “Actually, it would be ‘Good Afternoon’ sleepy head. It's fifteen minutes past noon.” The embarrassment must have shown on my face because he laughed. “It’s alright Astraia. I didn’t wake you up because I knew how tired you were. You don’t have to work today do you?” I shook my head no. “Good, you need a break. Would your boss agree to giving you a few days off?” He asked before taking a few sips of water. I almost never took any days off; this would be the first time in a year actually. “I’m sure he won’t mind. Why?” I said as I rubbed the little bits of eye crust from the corners of my eyes. Lio set his now empty
Three days passed at my house like a fading dream. We spent most of our time cooking for each other, going out to the movies, and laying around in my room watching TV. It might not sound very exciting but we both enjoyed ourselves, it’s something we had both needed badly. It’s now day four; Saturday night, and unfortunately all good things must come to an end. Lio used some of his vacation time to be with me and he only had two days left. He’d told me he needed to use the last two to finish up some floor plans needed for an upcoming project at work. He was doing well for himself, very well. I appreciated that ambition and drive in a man. I had just finished a nice hot shower and I was thankful my bathroom was in my bedroom. I didn’t have to take that freezing walk back, which was nice. When I opened the bathroom door, all of the trapped steam flowed out into the bedroom like a foggy phantom. The only light in the room was coming from my TV. Lio was laying in my bed in all of his n
There was a highway coming up along with the fields and farms on either side. We’d been running faster than I realized. The wereleopards were still behind us and catching up fast. Some of the other wolves were ahead of us and only a few were at our sides. Every now and then we had met up with the Shifter Task Forces but they weren’t half as much trouble as the wereleopards were going to be. I raised my head enough to look over Naremi’s head and saw a large number of wereleopards heading towards us. It didn’t look like Naremi or Lio planned on stopping so I put my head back down and braced myself. I heard and felt Naremi growl beneath me as we got closer to the wereleopards. Naremi suddenly stopped, making me jerk forward a little. I raised my head again to see what had happened and found that we were surrounded. The leopards stalked towards us snarling. Lio stood in front of Naremi and I baring his fangs at them but they were unmoved. My heart was beating faster than I thought po
Two weeks later, we were still staying at the cabin and everything had collapsed into chaos. It was a war between man and beast with no end in sight. I’d found some comfort in having Celeste around. She and I were able to have conversations without her taking emotional shots at me now, so I was pretty sure that she was trying to forgive me. I unfortunately couldn’t say the same for my parents. I’d told them the truth last week over the phone and they haven’t answered my calls since. I wasn’t too surprised honestly, that’s exactly how normal people should have reacted. On a lighter note, Byana and her people left a few days ago. We’d rescued everyone from one of the containment facilities, but not without heavy losses. Some of the wolves questioned whether or not we should have left them there or not, which had a lot of them fighting amongst each other. The mood in the house was morbid; I could still feel a lot of tension and anger between everyone. We were tired, mourning our los
After a full report from Githinji, everyone did their best to unwind. There wasn’t much anyone could do at the moment, especially me. Celeste and I were lying on a blanket in the backyard close to the tree line. It was night time now and the stars weren’t out tonight. I had never seen the night sky so clear and blue before. We were on our backs looking over at each other, talking. I had gotten Celeste up to speed on everything, but I could tell that she wouldn’t be cozy around the wolves anytime soon. Baltasar was sporting a pretty red handprint on the right side of his face, compliments of Celeste. “How do you deal with all of this Astraia? All by yourself?” She asked. I sighed before I answered. “To be honest I don’t know if I’m dealing at all. There are a lot of things that I have to accept about their world. Even now, I feel like going back to my parent’s house and forgetting about everything I know. Unfortunately, I can’t.” Celeste turned onto her side, facing me.
As I had this inner battle with myself, my consciousness started to shift from where I was now to some unknown location. Whatever I was seeing was sort of blurry so I couldn’t make out the surroundings very clearly. I could see people walking through a wooded area and some were being carried by the others. It looked like some of them were severely injured too. The way I saw them was as if I were walking behind them, so I couldn’t see any faces. The faint sounds of their voices were whispers all jumbled together and nothing made much sense. I was able to look around so I tried to find anything that could give me a hint as to where I was. On the ground there was nothing too distinctive except some orange flowers that seemed to only grow at the bases of the trees. My vision started to clear up a bit more and I could see more clearly, I could even hear the voices better. I looked up at the people walking ahead of me and they began to slow down. There was a red headed woman support
I awakened the next morning feeling fully rested for once. Lio was lying on his stomach next to me sleeping soundly. His jet black curls were half way covering his face, the rest were fanned out on the pillow. I propped myself up on one elbow, my chin resting in the palm of my hand. With my other hand I started softly gliding my fingertips along his spine. The memories of last night started playing back in my head. The ritual was complete; I was his mate for life now. A lazy smile was fixed upon my lips as my fingers slid back up towards his shoulder blades and into his thick mass of black curls. There were many times I would lay in bed admiring him like this; if I were the first to wake up. This time was different, my thoughts and feelings were different. The current situation we were in didn’t fill me with as much anxiety as it did before. For once my uncertainty, worry, and doubts were not present to ruin my happiness. While I continued to watch Lio sleep peacefully, he began
Some might look at me and think, ‘that poor woman’. I thought that I was the luckiest woman alive to have found a man who loves me as much as Lio does. As we entered the cabin, Lio kept one hand on my waist while he held my other hand in his. I was a little unstable on my feet still but at least I could stand now. Githinji opened the door for us before stepping aside and letting us pass. He came in behind us and closed the door. We walked down a dimly lit hallway that led into the kitchen. There were a couple of people eating at a booth style table but I didn’t recognize them. “Where is everyone?” Lio asked no one in particular. A woman with long, dark blue curly locks, deep dimples, blue eyes, and caramel skin answered him. “Some are in the den, others in the basement. Lady Byana requests your presence upon arrival…” She spoke with her head lowered, not meeting his eyes. I took the behavior as fear at first, but I realized that it was something more; respect. Lio simply
I was lying in bed in the spare room of Adel’s house. There were two windows open halfway to let the gentle summer breeze inside. Adel had given me a cool bath to keep my body temperature from rising too high, which helped me relax a bit more. There was a thirty-four inch LG TV on a wall mount ahead of me. The soap opera channel was on but I wasn’t really paying attention to it. I looked over to the right side of the room to see Adel and Githinji sitting on chairs that appear to have been brought up from the dining room table. They were conversing quietly amongst themselves but I noticed them glancing over at me every now and then. I had not even an ounce of energy left in me, I felt so drained and tired. My eyes started to slowly close as I lay there. Before I could let myself slip into a dream state, Adel came to me and shook me. I opened my eyes startled. “Adel? Why would you do that!? You scared me…” I asked, sounding agitated and frightened at the same time. “I’m sorry
This room was different from what the throne room had looked like. Cotton, peach colored drapes covered the bland stone walls and lanterns burned brightly throughout the room. There was only a king sized, onyx platform bed. It was covered with peach, white, gold, and tan throw pillows of all shapes and sizes. A door was open to the right which looked like a huge master bathroom. This kind of custom living must’ve cost a fortune. Teris tossed me onto the bed like a person would a coat before sitting on the edge of the bed. I managed to sit up using one of my hands to keep me steady. I wasn’t sure how I was slowly regaining my strength but I was happy nonetheless. “Oh this is one of the best days of my existence, Astraia. Do you know why?” He asked, looking straight at me. I just shrugged my shoulders. “Today I will finally have my revenge and tear my enemy down to nothing. I will have the wolves as my slaves and their territory will be mine. Your pathetic brother is mer
I was lying on Petros’s lap in the back seat; against my will of course. Petros had been ready to fight anyone who offered to ride in the back with me unless it was my brother. One of the women at Iericho’s place had lent me a dress and a pair of underwear. I respectfully declined the underwear offer. There was no way I was going to wear another woman’s underwear, even in an emergency. Iericho was driving while one other man from his sloth sat in the passenger side. We were on our way to Teris’s mountain chateau. Most of Iericho’s people were there and the rest were following us in their own cars. I knew the wolves would come to my rescue, but I was still worried about what kind of state Lio was in. If I felt this weak and drained, he must feel the same if not worse. For once I wanted Lio and I to live a peaceful life together. Going into this relationship I knew the risks very well. Regardless, Lio had made me happier than I had ever been in my life. “Why are we going to T
