My alarm clock is blaring next to me, alerting me to the fact that it is already 7 a.m. I groggily open my eyes, meeting the blackness of my room, a sliver of light peeking in through the gap in the white curtains. I slide my hands out from under the heavy sheets, blindly seeking for the alarm clock on my right. Finally finding it, I swipe my finger across the screen of my phone, turning off the cacophony and giving me some quiet. Staring up at the ceiling, I bring my blanket closer to my body, snuggling into it. I sigh knowing I'd have to get up soon.
I shuffle out of bed, my foot contacting the warm smooth soft carpet of the room, remembering I need to get Matteo ready. I sift through my outfits in my walk-in closet before deciding on a floor-length flowy flowery dress and a little cream cardigan to cover up my arms. Pairing it with just a pair of converse trainers. I've never much liked high heels, or pretty flats. Trainers are always most comfortable anyway, and it's not like anyone would see what I have on my feet, the dress is long enough to cover it.
Moving into the bathroom, I do my business before brushing my teeth and washing my face. Applying a light coating of concealer beneath my eyes and mascara to look more awake. I wore my hair down to my waist in delicate waves, running my fingers through it to add volume. Looking at my watch, I notice that it has just passed 7:30 a.m. Walking over to my door, I open it and glance down the corridor to see if anyone else is awake, but no one is. As I make my way down the corridors, I get closer to Matteo's room. I haven't seen it yet, so this will come as a surprise.
I quietly tap on his door to see if he's awake. But I don't hear anything. I gently open the door, trying to be as quiet as possible. The walls are painted grey, while the carpet is cream. I notice his little frame snuggled beneath his bed's covers. His dark blue covers clung to him tightly. I walk closer to him, smiling, kneeling on the floor so my face is level with his.
I gently caress his cheek with my palm, pushing the black strands of hair out of his face, his breaths coming in and out slowly. I don't want to wake him up, but I know I have too.
"Matteo?" I whisper, trying to get him to wake up gently.
"Matteo. It's time to wake up." This time, I whisper a little louder, caressing his cheek to help him wake up. Matteo whimpers, his little body wriggling against the sheets.
"Five more minutes dad. Please." He sighs, pressing his head further into the pillow. Do I sound like a male?
"But then you'll miss your breakfast with yours truly." I chuckle again, moving his hair out of his face, hoping he'll open his eyes.
Matteo's eyes suddenly open and he looks at me with wide, silver eyes. He quickly launches out of his bed, wrapping his tiny arms around my neck and wedges his head between the crook of my neck and shoulder. I chuckle patting his back, as his hands come down to my back gathering the material of my cardigan and dress in his fist.
"How about we get you changed yeah?" I ask, he doesn't reply just clings to me tighter, his nose tickling the soft skin of my neck. Standing up I wrap my arms around his waist, the other going under his but to make sure he doesn't fall. Matteo seems to know what I'm doing as he wraps his legs around my waist, both of us making our way over to his wardrobe.
I shuffle Matteo onto my hip and open the enormous walk-in wardrobe in Matteo's room with my other arm. The arrangement is same, with the only difference being the size and style of clothing. Walking deeper into the closet, I select some clothing that were already out and neatly folded on a dresser. I pick them up and return to the bathroom, where I attempt to lower Matteo to the floor.
"Do you want me to help or can you do it yourself?" I ask kneeling down to his height with the clothes in my lap.
"No, I can do it myself. I'm a man" Matteo stated this before ushering me out of the bathroom, his little form disappearing behind the bathroom door. I stand there staring at the door, stunned by what Matteo just said before giggling, trying not to let Matteo hear.
Looking around his room again, I move up to his bed, straightening the sheets out to get rid of the creases, while he's changing. When I turn around, I notice a small picture next to his bed. When I pick it up, I discover it has a picture of Alessandro, Matteo, and an unknown woman on it. They all appear to be content. Alessandro, too. He had Matteo in his arms and his other arm is wrapped around the woman's shoulders, keeping her close. When I hear the bathroom door open behind me, my fingers trace over the photo before returning it to its original location.
Turning back, I notice Matteo's shirt is buttoned incorrectly, with one side higher than the other. I stroll over to where he's standing, chuckling, before unbuttoning and buttoning it again, ruffling the hair on top of his head.
"Do you want to brush your teeth now or after we've eaten?" I ask waiting for his response.
"After, or my food will taste weird." Matteo said sticking his tongue out.
"All right, let's head down stairs and get something to eat." Standing up, I say. Matteo grabs my hand in his and leads me down the corridors and stairs to the kitchen. I'm still struggling to remember my way around here because it's so big, but it's starting to click now. Making our way around the corner I fail to notice Alessandro sitting at the counter, sipping what appears to be black coffee. Why is he down here? I mean, he does live here. Stupid Ilaria. Matteo turns to look at me, perplexed as to why I've come to a halt. I take a few steps closer as Matteo lets go of my hand and runs up to embrace his father's leg since he's sitting up on a high counter.
"Morning daddy!" He shouts excitedly, Alessandro picking up Matteo so he's sitting on his lap.
"Oh good morning Matteo. Ilaria. Would you like some breakfast honey?" Maia said turning towards me with a smile, her body holding an apron tightly around her, a spatula in her hand.
"T-that would be wonderful, thank you." I say my day going down the drain when I hear my stutter come back out. I walk over to the counter opposite Matteo and Alessandro. I can feel his gaze on me, but I won't look up. Maia lays a dish of pancakes and fruit in front of me, along with a tiny pot of chocolate sauce and syrup.
"G-good m-morning." I speak quietly to Alessandro, who looks up at me before returning his gaze to the papers in front of him while sipping his coffee. I've barely been here a day, and all I've seen him do is work. Does he ever stop? Out of the corner of my eye, I notice Matteo sitting in his own chair, near to where Alessandro is seated. I've never seen a child shovel food into his mouth so quickly. I frown at Alessandro before turning to my food and dipping a couple of strawberries in the chocolate. The juicy taste of te strawberies hitting my tongue, making me moan in satisfaction. Alessandro's shuffling comes to a halt as he looks at me with a dark expression that causes my cheeks to flush.
"Ignoring people is impolite, Dad." Matteo replied, glaring at his father, his pancakes vanished from his plate. I watch Alessandro look at Matteo before taking a long breath and looking back at me with an unhappy expression, as if he'd rather do anything but talk to me.
"Good morning. Ilaria." He gritted out, I give him a small nod as he turns back to look at the papers in front of him.
"Dad will you be having dinner with us later?" Matteo asks with chocolate sauce all round his mouth. I take a napkin reaching over to wipe it from his face, both of us chuckling.
"I'll try filgio. I know I have a lot of work to do, but I promise I'll try to eat with you whenever possible. Maybe when I get everything figured out, we can spend more time together. More than we are already doing." To express his regret, Alessandro ruffled his hair. Matteo simply shakes his head in understanding, wrapping his arms around his father. Alessandro kisses him on the forehead while holding him close to his chest.
I turn around in confusion as a long ringing noise fills the entire home.
"I'll get it son, don't worry." Maia said walking towards where I know is the front door.
After eating the last of my fruit and pancakes, I check the area around my mouth to make sure there is nothing there. I then take up Matteo's and my plates and head to the sink to wash them.
"Alessandro! Baby!" A high pitched feminine voice screeches as I hear the clicking of heels making it's way into the kitchen.
Turning around, I notice a tall blonde woman enter the room. Her beautiful waves cascading over her shoulders and down her back. Her gorgeous form was clinging to a tight red dress, with some gold heels. She rushes up to Alessandro and pulls him into a strong kiss, her arms wrapping around his form.
Who is this?
Who is this?I take my gaze away from Alessandro and this blonde-haired woman kissing near the counter. We certainly don't need to witness you two smacking lips together, especially Matteo. He'll be traumatized for the rest of his life. As I approach Matteo, I notice the disgust on his face, as well as the hard glare he's casting at the blonde woman in her skimpy red dress.I mean really her boobs look like they're about to spill out at any moment.Matteo extends his arms to me, making small grabby hands. I pick him up and place him on my hip before stepping around the counter away from them and onto the floor. His little hand clutching mine, a look still directed their way."Ah Matteo... aren't you a cutie." The blonde woman says this while bending down in front of Matteo, with what looks like a forced smile. Matteo takes a step back closer to me, his hand tightening around mine as her arms spread for a hug. This causes her smile to fade, and she turns to glance at me with a glare bef
It's now evening, and I'm sitting at the dining table with Matteo, who appears to be chatting nonstop about what he's learnt today. I believe he is one of those persons that simply enjoys learning. If he were to be assigned to a Hogwarts house, it would be Ravenclaw.I stare down at my lap, my right hand covered with the bandage from earlier, zoning out from what he's saying. I recall Alessandro's irritation and anger in his eyes, but his hands were so gentle against mine, a sharp contrast."Ilaria?" Matteo's voice snaps me out of my trance, and I withdraw my fingers away from where Alessandro's hand was on mine. Looking up, I notice Matteo asking me a question."Yes?" I inquire, turning my body to face him."What do you think? The chicken or the egg?" He asked with wide eyes, as though he's fascinated by the topic he's asking. I come to a halt while I mull over the question. No one, not even professional scientists, knows the answer to that question."Um.. I don't know that's a hard
"Pleeeeease Ilaria. Please?" Matteo begs, his small hands clutching my arms and straining on the thin fabric of my long shirt. He's been pleading with me for a few minutes now. He wants to go to the park today because he doesn't have home school. The only problem is that Alessandro told we couldn't leave the house without his permission."Matteo we've talked about this with your dad-""My dad is in a work meeting all day in town, he'll never know Ilaria. Pleeease" Matteo begs again cutting me off. I take a deep breath, trying not to give in as I look down at his big pleading silver eyes. "How about this? I'll phone your dad and I'll ask him ok?" I inquire, watching his head nod fast. I'm surprised he hasn't dizzy. I take my phone from my back pocket, looking through the contacts Alessandro has added on my phone. I find his phone number and push it with a shaking palm. Bringing the phone up to my ear I wait a second for the familiar ringing to reach my ears. My hands shake as I wait
"Ilaria." "Where. are, you?" Alessandro's stern voice reaches me through the phone, making my freeze. My eyes widen with surprise, and my muscles tense. Oh my goodness. Oh, no, no, no... no way. Taking a big breath in, I adjust my phone to my ear to avoid dropping it. Matteo's body is leaning against mine, his small arms wrapped around my hips, little sniffes escaping his chest. "A-Alessandro" I whisper out my hands shaking. "I'm going to ask you once more Ilaria. Where. are. you?" He gritted out once more leaving me in silence. "I-I um... I'm i-in the l-library." I stutter, hoping he'll believe my lie. If he finds out that I took Matteo out I'm dead. Literally. "Really? ...so why did I go in earlier and you weren't there? You were also not in your room... nor was Matteo. And one of my guards... informed me that you left earlier today... with my approval." Oh noooo. The guard snitched on us what the hell."So this is your last chance Ilaria. Where. Are. You". He asked one last t
"Can we watch this please papa." Matteo whines pointing at the ginormous plasma TV screen where he's stopped on Iron man. Since Alessandro and I talked earlier, Alessandro has suggested that Matteo watch a movie with him. I suppose it was to allow them to spend time together. Then Matteo invited me to join them, which Alessandro doesn't look happy with. We're all currently lounging on the massive sofa in the middle of the room, with a few odd lights on here and there to keep it from being too dark or too bright. It appeared... homely.I went to Matteo's room after our earlier conversation to find him sitting on his bed, worried. He said he was worried what his dad would do to me, since he looked angry. I assured him that everything was fine. We then had some dinner, which Maia had requested. The fettuccini alfredo was delicious. But Alessandro didn't show up until Matteo knocked on my door and said he wanted to watch a movie with Alessandro and me. And now here we are."We've watch
This morning, I awoke to a warm weight on top of me. I shuffle slightly as a result of the cramp in my leg, which causes the weight to snuggle into my neck and confuse me. I squint as the sun slithers through the gap in the curtain, stinging my eyes. When I turn my head to the left, I see Matteo's head snuggled into my neck, his body under my covers, his arms around my stomach clinging tightly to my shirt.I smile, caressing Matteo's soft black hair, and he smiles back, snuggling even closer to me, his nose tickling my neck. I try not to laugh out loud because I don't want to wake him up. I was shocked by the fact that Alessandro wanted to put Matteo to bed last night, he hasn't done that at all over the past few days I've been here. I guess he wants to try again. At least he's trying. I'd rather someone try and fail than to never try at all. "ILARIA!" I hear a familiar voice scream, followed by loud banging footsteps speeding up the stairs. My heart rate increases as I hear him appr
"I swear Ilaria I will kill a man, if you need me to." Lucas sternly says through the phone, after I told both Lucas and Abbey what Alessandro did. I needed some answer's. I am so confused. I haven't left my room since Alessandro took Matteo from my arms. I don't have the guts to meet his eyes after what he said. "Ilaria. What is it that you always tell me to do when I have rude customers in the bakery?" Abbey asks hrough the phone calmly, making me settle down slightly. "Ignore the people who's always talking behind your back, that's where they belong... behind your back." I whisper out through the phone hearing them hum in agreement. "Say your strong Ilaria." Lucas say's in a serious voice, leaving silence following after when I don't say anything. "But I'm not Lucas..." I whisper, tears appearing in my eyes. "I cry over the smallest things... All those years ago....I let... let him walk all over me... I let him talk to me like I was dirt underneath his shoe.... I didn't do any
"I never liked Allison." Lucas said this while slouching against the bed and munching on a slice of pepperoni pizza. Abbey just nods, her gaze fixed on the TV; I doubt she understands what Lucas just said, but she agrees anyway."Oh no." Lucas says it with sadness this time. Looking to see what he's upset about, I notice him staring at the last slice of pizza in the box, as Abbey does. I watch as they both turn to look at each other before shouting about why they should have the last slice."I saved you from babysitting your sister!" Abbey screams pulling the box towards her. "Yeah... well I ordered the pizza!" Lucas screams back tugging the pizza box towards himself now. As they fight over the pizza box, they begin tugging it between themselves. My stomach rumbles as I gaze at the pizza in the box. They wouldn't know if like you know.... I stole a small slice of pizza? Right? Deciding to go for it since you know it's pizza. I reach forward and take the slice. Abbey and Lucas both ob
I snuggle myself into the warmth beneath me, my pillow firm but soft and comfortable. Wait, what? Pillows aren't supposed to be hard. "No they're not Ilaria." A familiar chuckle and laugh says from next to me, making me even more confused. Did I just say that out loud? "Yes you did Ilaria." He laughs once more making me hide my face into the pillow with a groan. Pillow. No wait? I slowly open my eyes, blinking a few times to wake myself up. I notice I'm lying on a chest by turning my head slightly. As I inhale his manly scent, I notice his white buttoned shirt is slightly undone, giving me a view of his sculpted tanned chest and a few tattoos. Looking up slightly, I meet Alessandro's amused grey eyes and a small smile. As he chuckles again, this time louder, I feel my cheeks warm up and move so my face is hidden from his view. "Come on Ilaria, get up. You've been asleep for a few hours now." He said as he starts to nudge me off his chest gently, which just makes me bury myself into
"W-well it s-started a f-few years a-ago." I managed to get out. Alessandro's hands are holding mine as he caresses the soft skin, comforting and grounding me. I take a deep breath before continuing. "You can't catch me!" Matteo yells at me, his little giggles echoing down the corridors as I run after him, shaking my head in amusement. I chase after him, my breath coming out unevenly as I try to figure out where he's gone. I should have asked Alessandro for a map of this place. Walking down the corridor, I try to keep my steps quiet so he doesn't notice if I'm approaching him."Matteo." I sing, when I find that I can't see him anywhere. I notice the curtain moving in front of one of the large windows. I turn the corner and enter what appears to be another sitting room. I quickly open the curtain, expecting to see Matteo, but he isn't there. Looking up, I notice a small window open at the top, causing the curtain to sway slowly. Sighing I turn around to see Matteo standing by the door with a sly grin on his face. "Oh your in for it now." I laugh as I run after him again, his little giggles filling my ears and making my heart skip a beat. How does this little guy run faster than me
"Huh. So you're the babysitter that's changed our Matteo and Alessandro." I turn to my right and see the same amused brown-haired, brown-eyed man staring at me, his large frame sitting on the arm of the chair, his arms crossed. Taking a look behind him, Tio and a few strangers I've never seen before catch my eye. They were all massive, not as built or as tall as Alessandro. Each of them wearing fancy black suits, all of them matching one another. Tio's sitting next to the brown haired stranger on the chair, his leg lounged open. Two strangers standing behind the chair, one with dirty blonde hair, and the other one with black."Yeah no shit Enzo. Who else would that be?" The dirty blonde haired guy said, hitting the back of the brown haired guy who I now know is called Enzo. He winces and rubs the back of my head, making me concerned for him. What is with people in this house hitting one another like its the normal thing to do?"A-are you o-okay?" I ask, wide-eyed, as Enzo looks at me
"Ilaira.... I'll ask again. What are these?"Alessandro inquires sternly and softly at the same time. I can't say anything as my body freezes and tears flow once more from my eyes. Little sniffles escaping from my chest. I feel his hand reach for my arm. I flinch at the memory of him dragging me to the car earlier, but he doesn't. He traces over the pink scars on my arms, the lightest touch I've ever felt on my skin. His breath is coming out in quick, uneven bursts compared to my now slower breathing. I feel his hands move to my other arm rolling up the other sleeve revealing the rest of my scars, his breathing coming to a halt.I close my eyes, not wanting to see his disgusted expression. My scars are unsightly and stand out against my pale skin. I try to hold back my sobs as they try to escape my chest. But one seems to escape, my sniffles intrrupting the silence in the room. This time, I feel his hands come up, unbuttoning the chunky cardigan and lightly removing it from my should
Alessandro. His grey eyes meet mine, and let me tell you he is angry. No furious. His jaw is clenched tightly, as if it could snap at any moment. I'm surprised he hasn't broken through skin with his hands clenched at his sides. he doesn't move just stands there staring at me. It's as if he's staring into my soul. My hands shake at my sides, I don't dare move scared that Alessandro will just snap at any moment."Where. Is. Your. Phone?" Alessandro asks, his words coming out gritted teeth and quickening my heart rate. I take my phone from my back pocket and show it to him, watching his eyes move to it before quickly snatching it, forcing me to bite back my words. I observe him as he scrolls through my phone. I really need to put a password on my phone. He aggressively turns my phone towards me, displaying the messages he sent me."And why prey tell. Did you ignore me?" He asks once more, holding my phone in front of my face. I don't say anything too scared when he's like this. A tense
