Chapter 1 - Memories

4:55am. Time to get up for another day. Another day, what day of the week was it? What month was it? Mya sat up in bed and looked up to the slit of a window the other side of her room. Definitely summer. The sun was high and the sky a brilliant blue. If only she was free to lie in the grass and bathe in the basking sun. What she wouldn’t give to be free.

Mya looked around her room. A 10ft x 10ft white room containing; a single bed, upright wardrobe, a mirror, sink, shower and toilet in the corner. Her room. . . . this was no room. This was little more than a prison cell. A cold hole tucked away at the back of the manor where nobody goes. Fully soundproof so no one could hear her screams. She’d found that out the first few months she was here. Screamed and screamed until her throat bled. Nobody came. Nobody except Victor. Her tormentor. He’d come in with his baton and beat her unconscious. When she persisted with her screams he brought his knives. She looked at the scars on her arms. Just visible white lines on her tanned arms. Why would a werewolf, second in command, need knives? Because he enjoyed causing pain and mauling people to death wasn’t satisfying enough for him. Mya shivered at the memory of it. Victor was terrifying.

She shook the memories away as she stood and walked to the wardrobe to get her clothes. The standard black tank top, black jeans and matching underwear. No colour here. Everything was either black or white. The only dash of colour you would see is when someone bled. So much blood. Her ears rang with the screams of the victims she had seen. The torture she’d witnessed. This place was hell on earth. She would never have imagined so much horror when she was back at home. Home. A small cottage with a converted barn at the back surrounded by fields and livestock. Her parents sitting in the garden drinking her mother’s favourite pink lemonade from a frozen jug. “If the lemonades not ice cold it’s no good to drink” her mother would say. Every time without fail. Mya would look at her father who would roll his eyes and they’d laugh. Such a calm and happy place.

Mya would wait for her parents while they would go on their weekly hunt with the pack in the evenings. They’d stroll back the next morning. Her father’s wolf was a large black beast that stood to her shoulder and towered above her when on his back legs. A magnificent creature with bright green eyes that could see into your soul. His coat glistened in the sun, so shiny you could almost see yourself reflected in the fur. She used to take fist fulls of his fur and rub her face into his neck breathing in the earthy smell of him. A wolf built for battle and as Alpha of the pack it suited him well. Her mother’s wolf in stark contrast was a sleek, athletic build. Her fur a brilliant white it put snow to shame. With her piercing blue eyes that even in wolf form would show her devotion and love for her husband and daughter. Ying and Yang they were. Mya’s father had always told her how her mother was the calm to his storm. That’s how they worked so well together. They balanced one another perfectly.

One night when her parents were on their weekly hunt with the pack they struck. She saw the fire in the barn from her bedroom window. Mya ran down the stairs in her pyjamas her long golden hair flying wildly behind her as she raced through the house. But who could she phone? The whole pack was on the hunt. All ten members of their small pack were in wolf form with no way of answering a phone. She grabbed the fire extinguisher from the cupboard under the stairs and ran barefoot across the yard to the barn. There was no-one in the barn at present. Its sole purpose being the meeting place of the pack with spare rooms if pack meetings went on too late into the night. The fire had really taken hold quickly. She was just thinking how it was much quicker than she would of expected when an explosion from the front of the barn sent her flying backwards across the cobble yard. An explosion? But there was nothing in the barn that could of caused such a blast! She staggered to her feet just in time to see a figure walking out of the flames. A tall, thin man with dark brown hair and a perfectly kept moustache that curled at the ends.

“Ahhh Mya, there you are! We’ve been looking for you.” his voice slithered through her brain like a snake but his lips never moved to form words.

“Who are you and what are you doing on my father’s property?” She screamed at him.

“Never mind that. Be a pet and come with me quietly and no one need get hurt.” The voice crawled through her mind again.

“Leave now or suffer the consequences when my father returns”.

“Oh I think not Pet”. Pain seared through her skull and she collapsed to the ground once more.

She woke while being carried by a wolf whose scent she didn’t recognise. He was broad and muscular with sandy blonde hair and hazel eyes. You could call him handsome if he hadn’t been carrying her towards a van with blacked out windows while the blaze that took her family home lit up the night sky. He was carrying her almost tenderly with her head resting on his chest. He hadn’t noticed that she had woken. In a move quicker than she had thought she was capable of she grabbed his blonde hair pulled his head to hers and bit down hard on his ear shaking her head. Blood filled her mouth as the bottom half of his ear came off in her mouth and she spat it in his face. He roared in pain and dropped her to the floor. She scrambled to her feet and started running for her family’s woods. A deafening howl filled the night. She could hear a man shouting, “Victor no, I need her alive!” So, the blond wolfs name was Victor. The same blond wolf that was now racing towards her in wolf form. There was no way she could outrun him!

She dropped to the ground just in time as Victor soared over her head. His wolf was the same colour as his hair. A sandy blonde, almost dirty looking. Where was her family? She spun on the spot and started to run back towards the burning house, but Victor caught up. His claws sliced through her back like a knife through butter. She screamed in agony. A fire spread through her body from the wounds on her back. NO! This was not supposed to be how she was turned. She was supposed to be turned by mate once she had found in and born him children. At home with her pack there to keep her safe. She could die without them being there to look after her during her turning. She rolled onto her side. Her back arching with the pain searing through it. Victor prowled towards her, saliva dripping from his mouth. This was it. She was going to die in her front garden. Victor launched himself at her. Just as he was about to strike a man flew from the left and threw Victor across the front yard. Victor hit the garden wall and slid down it with a satisfying thump. “I told you I want her alive!” The man turned towards her and the world went black.

Mya looked in the mirror in front of her. Her tanned skin was just starting to show a few freckles across her nose and cheeks. Her long golden hair was braided and hung down the left side of her body nearly to her waist. Her piercing blue eyes staring back. Just like her mothers. Where was her mother now? Her father? Her pack? Why had they never come for her? Did they know where she was? Were they alive? So many questions unanswered. A tear rolled down her cheek. She swiped it away angrily. There was no place for tears here. They would only use it against her. A knock at the door, 5am on the dot as usual. She heard the latch unbolting from the outside. She turned to face the door.

Chapter 2 - The arena
“Breakfast is ready Mya. Don’t dally or you’ll go hungry again”. Beth stuck her head round the door. The cook for the manor. Her round face was topped by greying hair in a tight bun. Mya had grown very fond of Beth. She guessed Beth was in her late sixties. Her plump body clothed in a black chef’s uniform and white apron had often held her while she cried for her family. What such a lovely woman was doing in such an evil place she just could not work out.“You could of at least let me have a bit of a lie in” she said as she walked towards the open door, flinging her braid over her shoulder to hang down her back.“A lie in! HA! You’ll be lucky in this place you cheeky devil now get on with you or Darren will have both of our heads”. Beth chivvied her off in the direction of the kitchens. After breakfast the first training session of the day was in the outside arena. Tall stately stone bench’s encir

Chapter 3 - Knowledge
Mya fell in and out of consciousness. She lost track of time in her never ending world of pain. The fire swirled within her, eating at her bones. It felt almost like the pain of her turning after Victors attack but worse. So much worse! The flames roared inside her, bending her limbs, bowing her spine. She tore at her skin hoping to relieve the agony that she felt inside but to no avail. The fire burned on. It remoulded her very being, the very essence of who she was, who she could be. And then it was gone just as quickly as it had arrived. Peace. She slept for what felt like an eternity. She would hear voices in her dreams;“How long will the transformation take?”“Will she remember what happened?”“Was the experiment successful?”Were they talking about her? Who was it? What experiment did they perform? Ahh who cares anyway. This was bliss! She was floating in ecstasy. The world could wait a little longer. Her body fe

Chapter 4 - Lesson two
Mya slept surprisingly well given the amount of knowledge that Remus had given her to think over. She had so many questions. One of them being; why had Darren ordered the other shifters to attack her? It made no sense to keep her here this long to then try and kill her off one day. But was he trying to kill her now? Surely an attack from that many shifters would have killed her off for sure. Unless he had ordered them to stop. But what was the purpose of that? She sat up in bed and waited. There didn’t seem to be any rush for her to get out of bed so why should she. She started to get impatient. He had said he would be back for her next lesson. She looked at the clock, 5am. There was a knock at the door and with that in came Beth, her hair curled on top of her head in a tight bun as usual. “Good morning deary, now haven’t you been in the wars!” she looked Mya over from head to toe. She tutted “I have something for you” She turned and pulled from outside of the room a trolley

Chapter 5 - The mess hall
Mya felt good, like really good. It must have been a week now since the attack, but she felt stronger, fitter, she had more energy. Maybe it was all the fry ups Beth had been bringing her every morning? She was bored of being in this room now. Normally she was out and training every day. Training, training for what? Before she had time to continue her train of thought Remus walked through the door.“Have you never heard of knocking?” she sneered at him.He smiled at her. God he was creepy. “Come” he turned and walked back out of the room without another word, leaving the door open behind him. What was she, a dog? Come, who did he think he was? She stood there for a moment arms folded across her chest. She thought about being stubborn and staying put but her curiosity got the better of her. She ran down the hall to catch up with him her braided hair flying wildly behind her. They walked out into the gardens. Formal hedges planted in swirling desi

Chapter 6 - Training
Mya stood in the centre of the matts dripping with sweat and breathing heavily. Her black tank top and shorts were saturated, sweat sliding down her back. Lisa prowled around her, her huge paws making barely a sound on the padded floor. Her lioness was huge, golden fur with a white belly and a black tipped tail. Large yellow eyes that gave Mya a disapproving gaze as she circled her. The other shifters sat around the edge of the matts watching.“Come on Mya!” Quinn shouted from one of the chairs to the side of the matts. “You’re never going to get this if you keep trying to force the change! You don’t force the change to wolf so why do it to your other animals? You need to relax! Focus on Lisa’s form, how her shoulders roll with ease the gate of her step, the flick of her tail. Everything is effortless. Now, calm your breathing, relax your stance and think of your lion. This is all new to you so the first change to each animal will always be

Chapter 7 - Touchy
After lunch they were straight back to the matts. Mya was exhausted. She looked up at the clock at the end of the barn. 2pm; she’d been at this since 5am. This was insane. “Quinn I really don’t feel like doing more, I’m so tired. Can we have a break and do something else?” She moaned while stretching her arms.“You’ve just had lunch, that’s break enough. You’re going to stay here until you have all six animals turned correctly and that’s the end of it”. He almost sounded angry with her.“What’s the issue Quinn? It’s not like there’s a rush. I shan’t be going anywhere anytime soon” She rolled her eyes. With that Quinn leapt across the matts surprising her and pinned her to the floor. She didn’t even struggle she was so shocked. She thought Quinn to be a friend, what had she done wrong?Quinn snarled in her face, his eyes flashing to the yellow of his leopar

Chapter 8 - Visiting day
The next day Mya was sat up in bed in her little cottage. Storm was bustling about cleaning the bloody bandages and clothes they had used to wrap her up in yesterday once she had fallen unconscious. She looked down at her leg which was almost fully healed already. Just an angry red line showing from ankle to knee. The wounds on her shoulders and arms could barely be seen now. “How is Quinn?” Mya called through to the small sitting area.“Mmmm, he’ll be ok I guess” Storm said as she walked back into the bedroom. She sat on the end of the bed looking out of the small window that looked over the lawns.“Just ok? What in the hell brought that on?” Mya needed some answers. The way Quinn had acted was so out of character and irrational.Storm sighed. She looked down at her clasped hands. “Quinn’s mate is dying” she said quietly.Mya gasped “Dying? How? Of what?”“Old age Mya. S

Chapter 9 - Knowledge is power
Remus glided across the lawn beside her “So, your training is going well I hear. Three new animals to your repertoire, I am impressed!”“There is nothing impressive about it!” Mya turned spitting at him, rage boiling through her. “You’ve turned me into a damned circus freak show!”Remus seemed unperturbed by her rage. “A freak show, I think not my Pet. You are magnificent! My greatest achievement so far! I am very proud of what you have become. So much potential, so much strength, so much uncertainty! Darren is excited to have you here as part of his pack. You will make a great asset to him”.Mya was gobsmacked “I will never be a part of his pack!”“Why of course you are my Pet, what other pack would accept you now? No werewolf pack will have you now. Too uncertain of what you are and how you could affect them. No shifter clan will take you in either for the same reason. You are alrea

Chapter 10 - Lily
They walked through the corridors in silence as she mulled over this latest revelation. She stared at the back of his head as he walked in front of her. Although he creeped her out to no end, he was proving to be very useful with information. So as long as she stayed interesting to him, he would continue to be useful to her. They turned a corner and the smell of disinfectant filled her nose. Remus opened a door on their right and walked in. Mya followed but stayed in the doorway. Remus walked over to the bed that was in the middle of the room. There lay an aging woman, her silver hair tousled around her shoulders in thick curls. Her wrinkled skin looked thin and delicate. She had a small frame that looked as though it had been athletic at one stage in her life. She was hooked up to several monitors and a drip line protruded from her left hand. Her eyes closed she looked almost peaceful except for a slight tension that filled the air. Remus lent over as if to whisper to her, her hand
