The door opened and behind it stood a middle aged tan woman in a dark blue and white uniform and June could only assume that the woman was a housemaid. The woman's face lit up with a small smile as she held the door open for June to enter.
"You must be the nanny?" The maid asked June, still standing in the doorway.
"Yes." June nodded with a small smile and the maid moved out of the way for June to enter into the foyer of the mansion.
"Madame is waiting for you in the garden, follow me." The maid offered to which June accepted with a simple nod.
Well this was everything's starting line. She felt nervous but she had to do it, to go in there and betray strangers she never met. Her mother was dying and this was her only hope.
She wiped her palms on the pair of jeans she wore, heart beating a little bit faster as she kept up with the maid in the garden.
June stepped out into the warm bright sun and ahead of her she could see an amicable figure of a woman sitting in a gazebo, her head laid back on a neck pillow, her hands both spread out as two ladies worked on her manicure. The woman wore a long pinkish bathrobe and the garden looked more busy than calming.
"The nanny is here to see you ma'am." The maid announced while the woman didn't even bother to look at June.
"Right, I trust Clara Donovan has evaluated her already so she can start." The woman replied, still stuck in her position.
June couldn't help but feel sorry for this woman who had invested her trust in a venomous snake like Clara, if only she knew of her scheming plan that would bring down his husband's empire he had worked so hard for.
"Lauren?" The woman called and a young woman stepped into the gazebo.
She didn't need to say a word before the woman commanded what to do; "give her the contract to sign and would you be so kind as to get her away from here?" Mrs. White said dismissively.
"Show her to the room and make sure she understands everything about her tasks." Mrs. White added before the two left the busy garden.
The maid that had brought June to the garden has already disappeared and she had to follow Lauren whose walking might have been called jogging instead.
"Chop, chop, I don't have much time." Lauren said, barely looking at June as she led her to the library, her hands firmly clutching a stack of paper she held in her left arm while the other hand held her mobile while June tried to jog behind her to keep up.
Well what had she expected? It was much of a celebrity life in this mansion, Lydia White was a top model and actress and her husband was a business tycoon but she hadn't expected all the fuss.
"Sorry." This time it was a male voice, a blonde man with piercings was pushing a rack of clothes when he bumped into June who'd been gazing at different corners of the house. She has been mostly admiring the chandeliers that hung over the place.
"It's okay. It's my fault I wasn't paying attention." She replied with a smile allowing the man to pull her up from the floor.
"June Easton." Lauren called out before June can even help the man to get the clothes back to the rack.
"That's your call or you're done." The guy whispered in a low voice picking up some clothes from the floor.
"She looks too young to be mean." June whispered back scurrying on her feet, and continued following Lauren to the library.
"Madam doesn't tolerate clumsiness if you aim at staying for long." Lauren scolded opening the library door.
"I'm sorry." June apologized following Lauren into the room.
She sat across Lauren, her hands clamped together in front of her as she yet again studied the place. Surprisingly of all the places she's been into this was the only place with no cameras or maybe it was hidden.
"Sign this and read through this. If you make a single mistake you're gone." Lauren warned
"Okay but I'll have to read before I sign first?" June said which sounded more like a question.
"As you wish, although you can't change a thing. If you don't like it you move out, that's the life here." Lauren said with a smirk.
"What is the main clause of the contract?" June asked before signing the paper. There's no way she was losing the job. She had many reasons.
One, she was practically jobless now that she had resigned from the club and the rest she had were part time jobs that would feed her but barely pay her rent. Two, she wanted money and her mother's treatment. And three she wanted to know the truth.
"Well, you are not to talk about the private life that means the lives of Mr. and Mrs. White and their daughter. That's what's important." Lauren said standing up to leave.
"Working hours?" June asked immediately before Lauren could leave.
"There aren't any. You have to stay here to be of service whenever required. And you start now."
"But what-" before June can ask more questions Lauren had already left the library?
"Wow!" June breathed out as she looked down at the two papers she held.
A contract and something else she hasn't read yet. Placing down the contract on the table she started to read through the other paper.
"Shit!" she cursed, realizing that the paper was about her tasks and that she was running late already on her first day.
The paper said 10 o'clock dental appointment and now was the moment she realized she didn't know who she'd be babysitting and neither did she know where to look in this huge mansion where everyone was busy moving endless racks of clothes or make ups or shoes.
June hurried out of the library forgetting all about the contract, unfortunately the rest of the house was eerily silent and going back in the garden to her madam to tell her that she was already late for her first task and getting fired was out of the picture.
She'd rather find her own way like she always did, "oh God help me." She prayed as she looked around the house as if she would then figure out which look she had to look into.
'Obviously she wouldn't stay on the ground floor.' June thought before climbing the stairs but found herself stuck in a living room.
"She wouldn't be here either." She concluded before climbing another set of stairs.
"Jeez June you're probably getting fired." She groaned when this time she found herself caught in a long corridor with many doors on either side.
"I think I should open them and check?" she thought out loud already opening the first one.
'Nope' she thought as she looked at the pitch dark room.
She turned on her flashlight to look into the room, she took small steps into the room but before she could move further into the room a pair of hands gripped her waist.
"Ahhh!" she screamed, her phone falling to the ground.
"Someone will hear you Lauren; I thought I told you my office, not the theater room." A warm voice spoke behind her as she felt stubble brush her earlobe then her neck.
"What? Who the hell are you?" June asked, puzzled trying to free herself from the grip and instantly the grip loosened as the man was confused himself.
"You're not Lauren?" he asked as June bent to pick up her phone, her screen broken a little but she knew it was going to cost her a fortune according to her income.
"NO!" June spat angrily at the supposedly man who had her break her phone screen and the moment she gazed up her face paled in horror. From the light illuminated by her flashlight she could see the person standing in front of her.
"Mr. White?" she whispered out disbelievingly.
"Ye...yeah and who are you?" he stuttered a little bit, heart pounding in the chest but at the same time relieved it wasn't Lydia who'd caught him.
"Uh... nanny?" she voiced out in question
Her head was swirling with countless thoughts, the main one being if Mr. White was cheating on his wife with Lauren? The young mean girl? Why was every celebrity's life scandalous?
"Am I fired?" June hesitantly asked as Mr. White sighed before asking her to follow him.
June's feet carried her behind Mr. White who kept a steady pace as he led her down the corridor and took another turn to a long corridor with a single room at the end. Reaching the door he paused and looked at June as if considering his thoughts before pushing the door open and walking inside while leaving it open for June to follow him in.She had to admit that whatever she expected was in no way anything similar to what she encountered. She had anticipated love like a magical fairy roller-coaster tale like Lydia and Miles always looked like in the magazines or interviews. She hadn't fantasized about the idea of a cheating boss. That was out of her imagination since she never sympathized with dishonesty or cheaters and right now she was on the verge of talking her piece of mind out loud to Mr. White if he hadn't pre
The whole afternoon was slightly uncomfortable for June since Mr. White had insisted on keeping company with his daughter, Kiah. the sweet little one that June had met when she went to see Clara.Upon seeing her, she was happy and relieved that the child was sweet unlike many of the other kids she had babysat. she had tried to avoid his gaze or any communication. He didn't want to talk to her after the theater but he only wanted to look at her."Daddy?" Kiah broke the silence over the table. After the dentist appointment, she wanted a day out with her daddy since he was never really around most of the time. Now they were sitting in one of the expensive comfiest restaurants in town while outside his bodyguards were loaded with weapons hidden and on display as if there was
The ride back home was tense and I barely breathed.I lied to White when he asked if I had touched the laptop, and now I was praying so hard that the man Clara has said would take care of the footages already did.Kiah sat snuggled next to me in her father's expensive Mercedes. She would steal glances at me every now and then and throw me innocent, cute smiles, which I'd return. She looked like she now liked me already. The car slowly pulled up in front of the front door and White immediately sprinted out of the car without saying a word.Meanwhile I stayed behind waiting up for Kiah to decide whether she wanted to go inside or not."Do you think I should play outside?" Kiah's voice snapped me out of my trance.I had my fingers crossed that I wouldn't get caught."Well, it depends on what you'd like to play," I said gently, bending to her level my hands now on my knees. She scrunched her nose then started humming as if she was trying to think of she wanted."What games do you play?" I opened my eyes to search for my phone which kept ringing non stop."Why didn't I turn it off?" i muttered to myself in a groan.Normally, I would turn off my phone or put it in a do not disturb mode before I went to sleep.I lazily reached across the bed to the night stand and grabbed it and decided that this time I'll answer it."Hello?" I lazily picked up the phone."Are you sleeping?" My mother's voice immediately jolts me awake.Panic starts to kick in, my heart thrashing wildly in my chest."Are you okay mom? Do you need anything? Are you sick?" I ask immediately getting on my feet in alarm."Good morning to you too." She answers instead with a sweet chuckle.I check my phone to see I have ten missed calls from her already."How are you?" "Damn it I'm late." June cursed swinging her handbag over her shoulder and continued running through the busy streets of New York whilst her messy pony tail kept brushing her neck. She hated how crowded it always got around the dusk while many folks were rushing about for a family dinner, a handsome sleep at night and everything else. She rushed about for her third shift. It was almost weekend so she had gotten plenty of time to close her eyelids, since Mrs. Smith didn't work on Fridays June didn't have to babysit the Smith twins which was so relieving but that meant little cash too much to June's dismay. She took a sharp turn around the corner down the road where large and lighted letters came to life.MARS.Just like the planet or just like the month itself in French.Music was buzzing throughout the entire place by the time she entered through the back door. Meaning she was late and they've opened."Just about damn time." A voice snapped and June flinched as she prayed that today wo
“I have a deal.” Clara announced as soon as the devilishly handsome rich man had left which reminded June that she had a woman before her asking for her. She didn’t even know if that was the right term.Maybe want was a perfect fit.‘What could she possibly want? She looked happy and married.' She thought. If anything any employee was less interested in at this club was the word you. Of course unless you were some sick weirdo, the offers were always crazy with even crazy prices. June has always believed that God only preferred crazy people to be richer so that they'd spend it on nonsense while other people like her mother were rotting in the hospital, ready to die of cancer due to insufficient funds."I'm sorry but I'm afraid I'm not on the menu." she replied carefully, her eyes lingering on the woman's ring long enough."Oh, of course not. I'm not here for that or whatever your dirty mind thought." the woman says raising her fingers in the air so that June can look at the big diamond

June sat on the bench holding her mother's pale hand. She looked like a beautiful flower whose nectar was sucked off along with its life. But she never failed to smile whenever she saw her daughter. She wore a red beanie and a scarf around her neck. Her fragile figure sat in a wheelchair covered by a turtleneck sweater and a pair of pants, feet covered in white socks."You look so lost today." She commented in her small voice giving her daughter a small pat on her shoulder."What?" June asked, looking shocked for a while recovering from her thoughts."Is there any problem? Perhaps work?" Her mother asked but June had to shake her head in denial."Nothing much. Just shifting to a new job." she added to her mother's slightly raised brows."It's not like your first day in kindergarten. You'll do fine because you're my flesh." Her mother said, holding her daughter's face in her hands with a warm bright smile."Please don't mention it already." June replied with chuckles at the memory of h
The very next day June was to meet Clara Donovan at the address she had sent her via text and when she stood in front of the building.'oh boy this was not a meet up place, it is a freaking large company.' she had thought amused. The building was so tall, around eight stories high. June walked in slowly feeling sensitive as people gazed at her. she had tried her best to look presentable to meet Clara. Clara was wealthy obviously so June didn't want to embarrass herself by looking like a little garbage. She wore a black skirt hugging her curves which stopped just above her knees with a pink peplum top tucked in and a simple pair of black stilettos. Her hair was let down in a long neat ponytail making her face features seem exposed.June walked to the lobby attendant and asked if she could see Clara Donovan. The lady at the desk looked kind and had smiled at her the entire time, and after a minute she told her that Clara would be on the seventh floor.June thanked the lady and headed fo
