“Who is responsible for your pregnancy, Laura?” Jerry Phillips shouted for the third time in a minute. His face was red with anger, and his veins were protruding from his neck as he looked at his second daughter with all the hate and disappointment he was feeling.
“I don’t know, dad; I don’t know,” Laura replied again and again, her eyes filled with tears as she begged her father.
“Shut your mouth, Laura, and quit telling us all the lies; we all know you never wanted to be betrothed to Jared,” Anna Phillips, Laura’s stepmother, said, feigning displeasure for her stepdaughter's predicament.
“I am telling the truth; I swear it; please, someone should believe me,” Laura pleaded again.
“Your father offers you a better life, and all you can do is throw it away,” Anna said again, adding more fuel to the fire and making Jerry angry at his mistake of a daughter.
“Do one thing, Laura, just one thing, so that you don’t end up a shame to this family and you can’t do it,” Jerry said as his anger mounted.
“I’m sorry, Dad,” Laura said again. She was as confused as they were; she had no recollection of sleeping with anyone.
“You’re not sorry, you’re just ungrateful,” Anna said, adding, “You are a disgrace to this family; all you have done since your birth is bring shame upon this family. It seems no matter what we do, you just want to end up like your mother.”
Laura’s hands balled into fists at her side at the mention of her mother. She could take all the insults they were going to haul at her, but no one was going to insult the memory of her mother.
Laura looked towards Grace, who was sitting on the sofa beside her mother, Anna, and saw a wicked smile on her face. It was then that it dawned on Laura that there was just one night in her entire life she could not remember, and that was the night of the dinner.
“Grace What did you do to me that night? What did you do?” Laura asked in anger as she rushed over and pulled Grace up by her shirt sleeves.
Anna stepped towards them and pushed Laura away from her daughter. “Don’t you dare touch my daughter like that again, ever,” Anna declared in anger.
“Why would I know? It’s not like you take me wherever you go. I do not know anything about what she is talking about.” Grace replied with fake innocence.
“See, she does not know anything; Grace wouldn’t bring us shame like you have done.” Anna stated, her face expressing her disgust.
Tears streamed down Laura’s face as she moved towards her father. “Dad, Grace knows something; she was there that night,” Laura pleaded.
The sound of a slap echoed through the living room; the sting was felt by Laura, who held her checks in shock. “Dad…dd?” Laura stammered in pain.
“That is for lying against your sister; instead of you telling the truth, you are busy telling lies about your sister.” Jerry shouted at Laura.
“So, you do remember the night you got pregnant, and you have been lying about not remembering anything,” Anna said in mockery.
“I am trying my best so you don’t end up like your mother, so you can marry into a wealthy family, but all you have done is destroy it.” Jerry shouted, his words like hammers, knocking the breath out of Laura with every word.
“I am not my mother." Laura screamed in anger, her voice shaking as she looked straight at her father and added, “You were the one who made the mistake by sleeping with my mother; why do I have to suffer for it?”
Jerry was shocked at the audacity. “You disgrace me, and yet you have the courage to say that,” Jerry said as he moved towards Laura in anger and pushed her to the ground.
“I just knew it; you are just like your mother; after all that your father has done for you, after all that this family has done for you, yet you pay us by disgracing us; you are an ungrateful and selfish soul," Anna said.
A wicked laugh erupted from Laura; she looked possessed as she faced Anna. “Aren’t you the concerned stepmother? Just admit it. Admit that you’re happy I’m pregnant,” Laura shouted.
“She has gone mad, mom, dad. What are we going to do?” Grace asked Jerry, who was looking at Laura in shock too.
“You will not stay here and disgrace me, girl. I am sending you away; you surely have gotten mad,” Jerry said.
A sudden calmness fell on Laura as her eyes welled up with tears, the reality of her predicament becoming real.
"Dad, please don’t send me away; please, dad,” Laura pleaded.
Turning towards her stepmother, Laura begged, “I’m sorry; please don’t let him send me away, Grace; please, I beg of you.”
“That serves you right, Laura; at last we would be rid of you,” Anna replied.
“I’ll look after Jared for you, okay? Don’t worry, I won’t tell him you were chased out of town,” Grace said mockingly.
They were not concerned for her. Laura turned towards her father, who had called in one of the housekeepers.
“Lucy, go up to Laura’s room, pack every item that is important, and bring them down here,” Jerry instructed.
Lucy looked towards Laura with pity before replying, "Okay, sir.”
Turning in Laura’s direction, Jerry said, “I am sending you to a distant relative; she has been requesting that you visit; well, I guess, now’s the best time for you to.” He paused for a minute before adding, “The only difference is that you would not be coming back.”
Laura’s heart stopped when she heard that; her father’s face was set in stone as he said it. Anna and Grace looked so pleased, they didn’t bother to hide it.
Lucy brought down the bags, and they were picked up by the driver, who carried them to the car.
"Dad, please,” Laura pleaded one last time, but Jerry looked away in anger, Anna looked relieved, and Grace looked at her with triumph as Laura was led out to another life.
“I can’t believe what you are saying, doctor, can you repeat that?” Agnes Emerson asked again in surprise.“Is something wrong?” Laura asked when she joined them.Looking from the doctor to Agnes, whom she called aunt now. The pregnancy was a constant reminder of how she had left home.“It’s nothing, my dear; can you excuse us for a minute?” Agnes asked.“Sure, I’ll be by the car,” Laura replied with a smile.Laura rested her back on the car, her eyes taking in the buildings across the road. It looked pretty much the same as it did the first day she got to town.“That’s the Prof. Emerson girl, the one who moved into town a while ago,” Laura heard a woman say behind her.Laura shook her head; she was sure they knew she could hear them, but they continued none the less.“Yes, you ever wonder who knocked her up?” a second person asked.Frustrated, Laura turned in the direction of their voice and said, “I’m as clueless as you are.”The two ladies quickly walked past her and hurried down t
Laura opened her eyes to see two identical faces staring at her. This does not look like the hospital, she thought.“Mom, are you alright? Who were you talking to in the dream?” Lisa asked, whispering as she moved closer to observe her mother’s face.Laura’s eyes snapped open as she realized where she was—in the airplane on her way back to New York.“Mom, your eyes are red,” Liam said as he also observed his mother’s face. They had boarded on a first-class ticket, so they had the whole section to themselves. Laura didn’t have to worry about them disturbing the other passengers.“I’m okay, baby girl." Laura said to Lisa, and she turned to Liam and said, “It’s because I was sleeping.”“Liam, are my eyes red too?” Lisa turned to her brother so he could observe her eyes too.Liam bent towards Lisa, peering into her eyes to observe. “No, they are too tiny to be red, I guess,” Liam said.“Is that true, mom?” Lisa asked her mother, who was smiling at them, glad that she had distracted them f
“He went over there,” Lisa replied, pointing towards the restroom on the far end of the hall.Handing Lisa over to Audrey, Laura headed in the direction Lisa had pointed.“Liam!” Laura muttered through gritted teeth in frustration.Behind her, Audrey watched Laura match off in anger.“I think we should go after her,” Audrey said.“I think so too, Aunt Audrey,” Lisa replied. She didn’t want her mom to catch on to what they were trying to do. Liam had told her he had seen candidate number two before he headed in the direction of the restroom.“Okay, let’s go; we can get your bags later,” Audrey said, and they went after Laura.******In the rest room, standing beside Liam was a cool, tall, and handsome young man, and Liam thought, I think I’ve found my candidate number two.“What are you looking at, kid?” the man asked."Nothing; I just noticed how funny your shoe looks with that on it,” Liam replied as he cleaned his hand with the tissue in his hands. The man looked at his shoe and smi
Lisa’s eyes widened in surprise. “That’s a cool name, Liam,” she said in a small voice, careful not to alert her mom to their little discussion.“Lisa, Liam, quit talking and let’s go,” Laura said to them as she recovered herself.“Audrey, please make sure the bell boy gets all our luggage,” Laura said to Audrey, giving her a warm smile.“Oh, no, not that smile,” Audrey muttered as she watched Laura head towards the entrance. She turned towards the bellboy, who had come to get the luggage; she missed the drama that was unfolding at the entrance.Jason saw them walking towards him—the annoying lady from the airport—and this time there were two kids latching on her arm."I see you followed me all the way here," Jason said, stopping in front of Laura.Laura stared at him blankly for a few seconds. Lisa looked at Liam and whispered, "Oh no, Mummy is in the mood."Liam placed his left hand on his face and shook his head in disappointment.Instantly, Laura's face spread with a sweet smile,
“What the hell is that? Was that a whistle?” Jason said, his face filled with irritation.Tim quickly went out to the balcony, and as soon as he stepped out, he caught a glimpse of the back of a lady. Before he could say a word about who had made the noise, he heard the door to the other suite balcony close.“I didn't get the chance to ask. I didn't know someone was in the other suite now," Tim said as he returned to the bedroom."Yeah, I was told someone booked it indefinitely," Jason replied."Really? It must be someone important for you to agree to the reservation," Tim replied.Jason stood up and went to the wine counter in the living room. He poured himself a glass of champagne."Whoever it was offered to pay extra to keep the space, so I allowed it." Jason said this after taking a swing at his champagne."Jason, what was that about? I mean before the scream," Tim asked."How's my father?" Jason asked instead, not answering Tim's question."Mr. Cade North is yet to regain conscio
Laura paused and turned back toward the living room to see Audrey holding something out to her."Your phone—you forgot it on the couch," Audrey said."Oh, thank you," Laura replied, closing the door behind her as she stepped back into the living room.In the hallway, Jason and Tim were heading to the elevator when they saw the door to the next suite close as soon as they got to it. Jason caught a glimpse of a woman just before the door closed."Jason, do you want me to knock and ask about the noise earlier?" Tim asked."No, the hotel staff should take care of that. Get someone to send whoever is in there the guidelines for the suite," Jason replied in a haughty voice."Okay, I'll do that. Gift is already at the restaurant," Tim replied.Jason's personal bodyguard, Charlie, pushed the button to open the elevator. As they walked in, Jason said, "While I speak with grace, get a non-disclosure agreement drafted," to Tim.Laura stepped out of the suite and realized the elevator door was cl
Jason took the contract Tim had drafted and placed it before Gift as he stretched out a pen towards her. "Sign it, Gift; that's all you have to do," Jason said grimly. Gift Hatcher was a popular celebrity; she was gorgeous and well known in the movie industry. She had known Jason for quite a while; their families moved in the same circle, although the North family was on another level of influence. "If I am going to be your girlfriend to keep this secret, it's going to be on one condition, Jason," Gift said, her voice filled with determination. "And what is that?" Jason asked, looking impatient. Gift smiled sweetly as she said, "I want you to put in a few words for me in the industry, especially some big projects." Gift's statement intrigued Jason. "Why would I agree to that?" he told her. Despite needing her help, he would never recommend someone solely based on being an acquaintance. Gift smirked, her eyebrows raised innocently, as she said, "Well, you can't be the only one
A security guard, a cleaner, and Audrey were standing around them."I'm sorry, Aunt Audrey," Lisa pleaded, her eyes filled with tears.Laura was amazed. Standing in the midst of the group were Lisa and Liam, with a scatted cake at their center."What's going on here?" Laura asked as soon as she walked up to them."Mom!" The twins cried out and rushed over to her."Laura, it is just a small misunderstanding. Lisa and Liam insisted on carrying the cake, and the cake fell off while they were struggling for it." Audrey replied.Laura raised her brows in question at the twins, who were looking up at her with round eyes of pity."No, don't try that with me," Laura told them as she looked at their pitiful faces."What did I tell you guys?" Laura asked them sternly."We should behave ourselves." Liam and Lisa replied."It was an honest mistake, ma'am; we'll just get this cleaned up, and all is fine," the security guard told Laura."Thank you," Laura replied to the guard and turned to the twin
