Chapter 357

Irena sat in the small wheelchair waiting impatiently for the therapist to come and get her. One more day in this place before she would be able to go home where she would not have someone coming in to check on her every fifteen minutes to see if she was alright. God, what she wouldn’t give for a burger and a good night’s sleep, she thought, tapping her fingers on the side of the chair.

The sounds of phones ringing in the hall echoed through the quiet room making the wait seem that much longer. The squeaking sound of rubber soled shoes on the tiled floors was like nails on a chalkboard. The cart that brought the patients their meals had a horrible rubbing sound as it limped its way down the corridors. With a disgruntled sigh she reached for her cane next to the bedside table and pushed the door closed. Perhaps a few moments of peace would help calm her irritation.

Slowly, she closed her eyes, trying not to surrender to the quiet. The last thing she needed right now was to fall asleep.
