Not for the first time in about ten years, the thirty-year-old Alejandro Hernández, Consigliere of the Hernández family, wished humans could have the opportunity to choose which family they were born into.
At first, he had been proud of the power, wealth and connections that his family held, and was determined to be the next head of the family after his father. His determination had been unshakable until a couple of years back when an event that was going to be impossible for him to ever forget, occurred. It made him question a lot of things and wonder if the future he had always imagined for himself was what he really wanted. There was one thing that he was very certain about though. He didn't want to be in this particular meeting he was currently in. The familiar smell of Cuban cigars mixed with the scent of expensive whiskey, which hung in the air of the room and had not bothered him in the past, had somehow started to irritate the hell out of him. He wished he could be anywhere else but that place at that moment, but as the Consigliere, he couldn't just decide not to accompany his father to such meetings. His grey eyes roamed the dimly lit room as he listened to the low tones of the men gathered around the table. Tension hung in the air. The world he belonged to was always fraught with palpable tension caused by the weight of loyalty and betrayal that never went away. Knowing who to trust was oftentimes difficult in his world. As consigliere to his family, Alejandro had gotten used to the power plays and deception that were normal in his kind of world but tonight, there was something different. "Are you certain we should do this, Alessandro?" one of the men asked, his voice laced with scepticism. Alessandro's voice commanded attention effortlessly as was expected of the head of a powerful family. The Hernàndez family. As he leaned forward with his intelligent grey eyes gleaming in the faintly lit room, his deep voice dripped with authority. “We have no other choice. The Lorca family is already making moves and we can't afford to be caught off guard." Alejandro allowed his eyes to drift across the room and landed on the world outside the window. It was a lovely sunny day, perfect for relaxing on the beach instead of being in a room making plans about retaining the top position of the hierarchy. As much as he hated his family’s business, he still couldn't help but take a little pride in how the family had managed to claw their way to the top. It had taken a whole lot of sacrifice and of course, street smarts. So, it was understandable why the Hernández clan were so bothered by the Lorca family who were trying to push them away from their well-deserved position in the hierarchy. The meeting eventually came to an end much to Alejandro’s relief and he headed straight home afterwards to prepare for the charity event that was being held that night. It wasn't as though he was eager to be anywhere else except his house that night but unfortunately, he had no choice. Even though the Consigliere of the Hernández family hated social gatherings, he knew that they were important for the purpose of making strong connections. About ten minutes before the time the charity event was to begin, Alejandro Hernández was still taking his precious time in front of the full-length mirror. It wasn't that the Consigliere was obsessed with his appearance but it was just one of the small ways that he ensured he got late to every event. He took in his intelligent grey eyes and dark hair which were so much like his father’s. In fact, he was the exact replica of a younger version of his father. It was his late sister, Francesca, who had shared similar physical features with his mother. His eyelids fell shut in pain as he remembered just how she had died. It didn't matter how many years had passed since her death. The memory still hurts. A rival family had killed his sister because one of the Hernández men had murdered one of their own It was after seeing first-hand how the kind of world he lived in could lead to the loss of things that one held dear that he made a vow to himself to renounce the family business. The painful memory still had a way of making him furious. As he forced himself back to the present, he realized that his hands were trembling with rage. He wasn't just mad at the ones responsible for his sister’s death but also mad at his father for not immediately doing away with their crazy world after the death of his daughter. In his opinion, his father was just like the rest of the other insensitive bastards who cared about nothing but their power and position in the hierarchy. He would have confronted his father about it all these years but knew that it was going to change nothing. His plan was to play along with Alessandro Hernández's ambitions like the faithful dog he was until it was safe to leave. After taking a couple of deep breaths, he glanced at the clock and decided that he was already late enough. He reached the event centre and was pleased to see that the program was just a couple of minutes from ending. With the little time that was left, he took the opportunity to make small talk with both the elites he knew quite well and the ones he had only heard of. He also made sure to have a light conversation with the host who happened to be a great ally of his family. His father wouldn't be pleased if he didn't. It was just when he had decided that it was time to leave that he saw her and for a moment, time seemed to stop. Alejandro was used to seeing beautiful women all the time and in fact, they usually threw themselves all over him. The woman who was a couple of metres away from him wasn’t the most beautiful woman that he had ever laid eyes upon but there was just something about her that called to the deepest parts of him Before he could even think twice about it, he was already strolling across the room, towards the group she was chatting animatedly with. She suddenly turned her head towards him when he was still a couple of steps away and her golden brown eyes collided with his, leaving him rather breathless. His eyes never left hers even when he finally got close to the group. "Hi," she greeted in a voice that was both sultry and confident. "I'm Gabriela.” It took an embarrassingly long period before he realized that she had her hand stretched out for a handshake. A nervous laughter bubbled from his throat as he took her hand firmly in his. “I'm Alejandro Hernández and it's a pleasure to meet you, Gabriela." He resisted the urge to do something as silly as dropping a kiss right in the middle of her tender palm and instead decided to focus on what the group was discussing. Alejandro fought the urge to skip in excitement when the others departed and it was just both of them conversing. It didn't take too long to discover that aside from being beautiful in an ethereal sort of way, Gabriela was also very intelligent, witty and also a good conversationalist. He couldn't help his eyes from crawling down the Pearl necklace on her chest, as he stared critically at her. Slowly noticing the slight pucker of her nipples underneath the dress she was wearing. He was so entranced by her that he nearly missed the feeling that he was being watched. “Is something wrong?” she queried when he turned to scan the room. Alejandro quickly turned towards her with an apologetic smile on his face. “Forgive me. I just felt someone was watching me and unfortunately, I am a very paranoid person.” “Oh,” she murmured and then gave me an understanding smile. “Trust me, I know exactly what that feels like.” His brows furrowed a little as he wondered what the hell must have happened to her in the past to cause her to be able to relate to his paranoia. “You do?” He thought to himself, watching her lips move. Wishing he could spell out those exact words to her but instead, she changed the topic. “So what is it like in the Clan?” She asked…The silent drive back to her house gave Gabriella the opportunity to reminisce about the events of the rather pleasant night. She had achieved all she intended to at the event, mingling with the guests, making small talk, exchanging a few pleasantries, and donating generously to the cause. All she was looking forward to was getting home, taking a warm bath, diving into bed and calling it a night. She smiled happily and contentedly as the thoughts crossed her mind. Not surprisingly, her thoughts strayed to the engaging conversation she had with Alejandro Hernández. There was something about him that had caught her attention. Maybe it was his piercing eyes or how sinfully handsome he looked; no one should be allowed to look that good; or perhaps it was just the way he carried himself with confidence and poise. Gabriela pushed the thoughts aside, focusing on the cool night air pouring in through the passenger window of the cab. The ride home also gave
Alessandro Hernández stood by the large window of his office, staring at the city below. His thoughts though, were far away from the city view, calculating, as usual. Due to the nature of his position as the head of the Hernández family, he was a man who always had a plan and strategy for everything. He had to run all stages of a plan in his head, considering possible setbacks and proffering solutions to them before acting on anything. His mind wandered back to the early days of the Hernández family's rise to power. Giovanni Hernández, his grandfather, had been an ambitious man. He had built the family's business from scratch. He started out as a small-time smuggler working with some gangs but in time, he had grown, broken out and quickly expanded his operations to real estate, constructions and security, forming alliances with other powerful families and eliminating anyone who stood in his way. Alessandro's father, Leonardo Hernández had taken over from his father, Giovan
The Don Ricardo Lorca sat behind his large desk as he addressed his followers. "Gentlemen, we have an opportunity to take down the Hernández family once and for all." Ricardo said in a firm voice with a bit of amusement. "Alessandro Hernández thinks he is the law but he is going to meet a befitting and humbling end." The faces of Ricardo’s followers litted up with determination and excitement as they nodded in agreement. One of them spoke up. "We know they are planning to expand into new territory. If we can disrupt their plans, we can gain the upper hand." Ricardo smiled as he said "I like the way you think. Let's make it work. We have been waiting for the perfect moment to strike, and now it's here." His tone was beginning to go higher as the smile was replaced with an angry gaze, and he continued. "For years the Hernández have hindered us, thinking they are above us, but now, we will show them our true strength." Knowing the risks involved in goi
Gabriella dragged herself off the bed as her alarm rang and the morning sun came peeping through her window. She rubbed the weariness from her eyes as she made her way to the bathroom to get herself started for the day.As she sat down to relief herself on the toilet, the weight of her busy week came crashing down on her with full force. The endless meetings, visits to orphanages and office work had left her drained, with barely enough time for a decent meal or a full night's sleep.Yet, despite the exhaustion, her mind still occasionally wandered to the mysterious man she met at the last ball she attended. She could still vividly picture his face, his eyes and how he effortlessly conversed with her though they had only met that evening. Somehow, everything about him just intrigued her and somewhere in the quiet space of her mind, she hoped they met again."Get your act together Gabby", she muttered to herself, a familiar line she had used to chastise herself these days. "You really
Lorenzo's team ran the plate number and got a lead. The vehicle was registered to a shell company but they were able to track it to it's last location. "This could be our cue," Lorenzo said his voice low and in a manner that signified urgency. "Let's get a team over there and see what we can dig up." Alejandro's eyes narrowed as he watched the surveillance footage. He was at least glad they had gotten a lead. In very little time, they would be able to apprehend the master mind if they continued at this pace and if the universe decided to bless them with luck. The team moved in conducting conducting surveillance on the location. They noticed suspicious activity and their instincts told them they were getting close. .................. The day of the event had finally arrived and Gabriella was in a fine mixture of nervous and excitement. She had been working tirelessly to ensure that everything goes smoothly and she was determined to make this night a memorable one for the child
The event had kicked off in full swing. The curtains opened with a solo piano piece by Gabriella to the amazement of everyone. It was the first time a live audience got to see the artistic side of her.She had walked into one of the children's rehearsals as they prepared for the event and got to know that their pianist had an emergency and would not be able to make it for the day. They were still trying to remedy the situation when Gabriella asked the director for the piece they were working on. After a few minutes of trying to find the musical notes on the piano, she started playing and the rehearsals continued.Gabriella had saved the day and the director was both thankful and amazed. He suggested that Gabriella opened the event with a piano piece but she waved it off giving a "I'm not that skilled to perform for an audience" excuse and concluded with "and besides the night is all about the children, I wouldn't want to steal their moment" as she ran off.Somehow, Rachel got wind of
Alejandro knew he was being watched. He knew eyes were on him from the moment he stepped in. During his exchange with Gabriella, he was finally able to pinpoint one of the intels. His team had found out their mastermind was Victor. His exchange with Gabriella was done in a manner to both confirm and disapprove Victor's suspicions that he had some manner of relations with Gabriella. This would build some sort of confusion in their camp.Rachel unknowingly gave his plans headway as the chatterbox that she was. During their brief conversation, there were moments when it was just Rachel and Alejandro that conversed before she had to step away.It was popular information among the Mafia that unlike other members of the Mafia, Alejandro didn't flirt or hang around with women except for business reasons. There was even a time he was rumored to be gay because while other members would get their relief or fun at private sections of high class clubs that gave them license to fool around, Alejan
While Gabriella played the piano, her eyes searched for Alejandro in the midst of the audience. In his gaze was a mixture of emotions. She smiled as she played trying to focus on her rendition but the more she stared at his direction, his gaze was moving from shock to cold and it was beginning to get unsettling. She noticed he was so lost in his thoughts that his attention was jolted back to the event by the cheers and applause of the audience. Immediately he joined the audience standing, he left shortly afterwards accompanied by a pretty looking lady she later learned was Sofia Winston, the famous museum curator."He did say he was leaving early but I never thought it would be so soon" Gabriella reasoned to herself. "Well, he also did say he had an engagement planned for the evening, maybe it had something to do with the lady he left locking arms with" Gabriella unconsciously sighedAt this time, she gave herself one of her famous call to order and she was able to drag her mind back
Rachel burst into Gabriella's office, a look of utter despair on her face. "Gabriella, my world is crumbling around me! Gabriella rolled her eyes as she watched Rachel. "What is it this time?" She asked looking at her uninterested."My cousin's birthday party is tonight, and I've completely forgotten to get her a gift. I'll never forgive myself if I don't make it up to her." Rachel went on not minding Gabriella's look.Gabriella raised an eyebrow, skeptical. "Rach, you're being dramatic again. The last time you were this way, I performed on a stage surrounded by a large audience."Rachel fired back in her mind. "I also remember you enjoying it." She mentally shook herself as she returned to character. She clutched her heart. "I'm not being dramatic, I'm being desperate! I need your help to save my reputation as a good cousin. Please, Gabriella, help me find a gift and drop it off at her place.""Rachel, I don't think you need me to do this. I don't sell gifts neither do I render cour
Victor was released after one week of his supposed vacation. He took two weeks to refresh himself until he started looking human again, with his bandages removed, and his bruises less of a eye sore. He had been behind closed doors for almost three weeks and he decided to step out this evening to get fresh air.His subordinates had not seen him since he came back so, he decided not to visit the club he manages under the Lorca group. His driver made a final turn as he arrived one of the most popular clubs in the city. As he alighted from his car, he adjusted his cane to carry his weight before he started moving. The cane has been his third leg since he returned, helping him to support his movement until he could walk fine without an external aid. He looked up at the club's sign, the neon lights reflecting off his face: "Club Eclipse". His gaze lingered for a moment before his cane slipped as he was about to move forward. He bent over to pick it up when he winced. As he stood up after
Sofia sat at her desk, staring at the business card Alejandro had handed her that evening. It was a simple, elegant design, with his name and contact information engraved on it. She turned the card over in her hand, her mind wandering back to their brief conversation.Alejandro had seemed polite, but distant, and Sofia couldn't help but wonder if she had misread the situation entirely. He was in haste as he tried to leave the event but he still found time to exchange business cards with her. That could mean something right? She smiled sheepishly as she reasoned. It had been almost three weeks since the charity event, and Sofia had yet to hear from Alejandro. She had tried to brush it off, telling herself she was being silly, but a part of her couldn't shake the feeling that she had been dismissed.Sofia's eyes narrowed slightly as she thought about Alejandro's behavior. There was something about him that didn't quite add up, something that made her curious, and she intended to get to
Gabriella's eyes remained fastened on the black SUV. Her mind was racing endlessly with worst-case scenarios. She tried to shake off the feeling of unease, telling herself it was just her imagination playing tricks on her but, the memory of the attack at the charity event was still fresh in her mind, and she couldn't help but wonder if she was in danger again. She took a deep breath and tried to focus on her work, but her eyes kept drifting back to the window. The SUV was still there, parked across the street. Finally, Gabriella couldn't take it anymore. She picked up the phone and dialed the number of the police station, asking to speak to the detective who was handling her case. When her call was answered, she was told that the detective in charge of her case had just stepped out, and was asked to call back in ten minutes. As Gabriella waited for Detective James to respond, she kept glancing out the window at the black SUV. As she watched, a well-dressed woman stepped out of the bui
Alejandro stood outside his father's office, taking a deep breath to prepare himself for the conversation that was about to ensue. He had been summoned by Don Alessandro, and he knew that it couldn't be good. Especially with his father's awareness of his involvement with Gabriella. He pushed open the door and stepped inside, his eyes locking onto his father's imposing figure behind the desk. Don Alessandro's expression was stern, his eyes narrowing as he gestured for Alejandro to take a seat.He couldn't remember the last time he or anyone else was asked to sit when summoned by the Don. Somehow, he father liked to assert dominance in weird ways. He preferred his subordinates not being at eye level distance when they were summoned. Except they were in a meeting, they stood. So, the Don asking him to sit, sent a feedback that he needed to be alert for whatever was to come."Alejandro, I've been hearing some disturbing reports," Don Alessandro began, his voice low and menacing. "Reports
Don Alessandro Hernandez sat behind his massive desk, his eyes fixed on the file in front of him. The file contained information on Gabriella Maria Lorca, the charity event organizer who had somehow managed to capture his son's attention. "Lorca" He didn't like the fact that she shared names with their longest standing revival. He really hoped she was nothing like them. He dismissed the thought of her last name casually. He had first heard about Gabriella from Rafael, one of his most trusted associates. Rafael had been tasked with keeping an eye on Alejandro, making sure he didn't stray too far from the family's interests. Fascinatingly, Victor had reported back to him about Alejandro's encounter with Gabriella at the charity event. At first, Don Alessandro hadn't thought much of it. His son was known to have a string of fleeting relationships with women from all walks of life. Despite this, Alejandro had never glanced at a lady twice except it was for business communication. Alejan
Alejandro Hernandez stood at the window of his high-rise office, gazing out at the city below. His mind, however, was elsewhere, lost in the tangled web of his family's past.Growing up as the son of Don Alessandro Hernandez, the notorious Mafia Lord, had been a double-edged sword. On one hand, Alejandro had been afforded every luxury and opportunity imaginable, treated as a king from a very young age. On the other, he had been conditioned to prioritize the family's business above all else, including his own happiness.Alejandro's thoughts drifted back to his childhood, remembering the countless times his father had lectured him on the importance of loyalty and duty. Don Alessandro had been a hard man to please, always pushing him to be more ruthless, more cunning, and more calculating. Somehow, his father always wanted him to be more. He wanted no stain on the family's reputation. In his much younger years, his father considered him too weak, and had gone extreme measures to toughen
Gabriella's eyes widened as she took in Alejandro's features. His broad chest, handsome face and his eyes, oh! that gaze that drew her in so well always making her wonder what was running through his mind made her froze for a moment. His eyes were piercing right through her soul making her feel like he could read her mind. She quivered as she tried to process her emotions. He was the one person she wasn't expecting to run into, at least, not yet.For a moment, they just stood that way, his eyes boring holes in her, his expression unreadable. Gabriella's hands were still brushing against Alejandro's chest, and she could feel the warmth of his body through his clothes. Her chest fluttered, and her face grew warm. She jolted as her senses came back and she removed her hands from his chest in a manner that an onlooker would think something pricked her.Gabriella's eyes dropped to the ground, and she took a step back, trying to create some distance between them. She felt like she was drow
As Gabriella slept, Rachel kept watch, making sure her friend was comfortable and safe. The next morning, Gabriella woke up feeling a bit sore but relieved that the night had passed without any further incidents. Rachel was already up, making breakfast in the kitchen."Good morning sunshine!" Rachel chimed, as Gabriella entered the kitchen. "How are you feeling today?"Gabriella smiled, taking a seat at the table. "I'm doing alright. Thanks for taking care of me last night."Rachel smiled, serving Gabriella a plate of scrambled eggs and toast. "Anytime, Gab. That's why you have me."As they ate, Gabriella filled Rachel in on the details of the attack, and Rachel listened intently with a look of concern etched on her face."For the first time in my life, I was grateful to my mom for forcing me to take those Taekwondo classes. I was able to hold my ground before the event's security arrived" Gabriella chuckled as she tried to make light of the situation to calm her friend down."I'm so
