Chapter 21: Council and Reavers

Alaric sat at the head of the long council table. His expression was stoic as he listened to his advisors. The room was filled with the soft murmur of voices, discussing various improvements to the kingdom. The council had been convened to review the progress in agriculture, infrastructure, and military defenses, and for the most part, everything seemed to be falling into place. The roads were being expanded, trade was flourishing, and the people were content—at least, for the moment.

"Your Majesty," began the royal treasurer, a stout man with thinning hair, "The kingdom's coffers have seen a considerable increase in wealth since the new trade routes were established. Our relationship with the eastern provinces has proven profitable, and—"

"That will be enough," Alaric interrupted, waving his hand dismissively. His focus was sharp, but his patience for the minutiae was wearing thin.

"Why am I even doing this?" she muttered under her breath, her arms aching from scrubbing the massive stonework. Back in her world, the only things she ever had to clean were her small apartment and her office desk. That, she could handle. But here? She had to clean entire palaces. She sighed, letting the rag fall limply in her hand as she stared at the endless corridors around her. This place was enormous compared to her world, where life was simple—annoying, but simple. She could almost laugh at the irony. Back in her world, her biggest worries were work deadlines and cleaning up after herself. Now she was stuck polishing royal statues. But then, as she paused in thought, a strange sense of relief washed over her. Somehow, she had managed to survive here. Somehow, she had adapted. What a sight to behold."Amaris gasped, jolting awake as she glanced around, bewildered. "Wh-what happened?" she asked, still caught in a haze of sleepiness."You fell asleep, my dear," Rosalind replied with a light laugh, though her expression shifted to something more serious. "Pray tell, how fare you? How do you feel?"Amaris glanced toward the butterflies flitting above the nearby flowers, lost in thought for a moment."It's been two weeks since Alaric left for war," she said, a pout forming on her lips. "What kind of war lasts that long? It's ridiculous."Rosalind couldn't help but chuckle softly. "It seems to me that you have been missing the king rather dearly. I thought you loathed him.""Wh-what? Chapter 25: The WarAmaris moved swiftly through her room. She began gathering essentials with a nervous expression on her face . She packed food and water first, wrapping the provisions in a cloth and tucking them carefully into a small satchel. Her hands lingered over the map she'd taken from the library—a worn and faded piece with routes marked in elegant, scripted ink. "This'll do," she muttered, folding it carefully. From a hidden corner of her dresser, she retrieved the few coins she'd managed to save over her time here. It wasn't much, but it would have to be enough to get her started. Her fingers brushed over the coins briefly while wishing that it would be enough. The weight of it in her palm was comforting, grounding her resolve. Finally, she placed a few pieces of clothing into the bag, practical garments suited for travel and inconspicuous enough to let her blend in should she encounter anyone on the road. She couldn't afford to look like someone from the castle—too many p

She caught herself on the edge of a dusty old chair, breathing through the ache. "Just great," she muttered under her breath. "Like I don't already have enough going on."It had been two months since she'd left the palace, and she'd somehow stumbled on this worn-down cabin hidden in the forest outside Alaric's kingdom. The place was a mess when she found it. Dust and dirt caked every surface. Whoever used it before must have been passing through and never looked back. She'd spent days scrubbing, sweeping, and patching things up with whatever scraps she could find. After all, she didn't have a lot of options. It was this place or the woods. And now here she was, actually feeling a bit attached to this rickety little cabin. She had added small comforts such as a couple of wildflowers on the windowsill and herbs hanging above the fireplace. Still, every day was a strugg

Chapter 28: The Plan to Return Home"Where are the others?" Alaric's voice was a weary demand. His figure was barely recognizable in the dark, battered and bloodstained from the brutal months of fighting."Sire!" The soldier called out, startled by the king's sudden presence, yet quickly subdued his voice in the stillness of the forest night. Alaric was dragging two unconscious, wounded soldiers across the forest floor with a makeshift banner while his face was devoid of any sign of pain or exhaustion, though his posture betrayed the toll of their arduous battle. "The captain discovered a cottage deeper in the woods. Please, sire—our remaining men are safe and being tended to. Rest yourself," the soldier urged, his own voice laced with concern. But Alaric's expression remained steeled as the bitter remnants of battle reflected in his eyes.
